New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

Part Two

#15 – PG Kevin Epps (South Carolina), 6’3”, 173lbs
Drafted - #3 by Portland Trailblazers in 2022
Teams – Portland, Brooklyn, San Diego
Career Stats – 13.8 points, 9.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.0 blocks

After all of these players who are phenomenal shooters it’s a little strange to see someone who has shot 39.3% from the field for his career in the top 15. What makes Kevin Epps so special in this shooter’s league? He’s the guy that gives them the looks. He’s an amazing passer and loves nothing more than for others to get their points. He’s also a fantastic rebounder for a skinny point guard. He’s the nearly the complete package, tallying the most triple doubles of anyone in the last 25 years. He is Jason Kidd reincarnated, not the best scorer but everything else he does better than most, and when he averaged 16 points, 12 assists and 7 rebounds for a season with the Riders, he deserves to be here.

#14 – PG Michael Harmon (Creighton), 6’4”, 157lbs
Drafted - #2 by Indiana Pacers in 2033
Teams – Indiana
Career Stats – 22.0 points, 8.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 0.5 blocks

Many might be surprised that someone who is only 23 years old is up so high but that is how enamored most people (this writer included) are with this kid. He’s a beanstalk at only 157lbs but the way he plays the game is just effortless. The odds on favourite to win this season’s MVP award, Harmon is the player that many thought that Camah Williams would be, a spectacular scorer that is a threat anywhere on the court. His defence is top notch while the loves passing the ball. In short, unstoppable. It will be amazing to watch this kid grow from the best point guard in the league (check), the best player in the league (arguably check) to the best point guard ever. Loads of pressure but if anyone can fulfill the promise it’s Michael Harmon.

#13 – SG Oskar Carlsson (Sweden), 6’7”, 220lbs
Drafted - #2 by Cleveland Cavaliers in 2030
Teams – Cleveland, Golden State
Career Stats – 2.5 points, 6.5 assists, 7.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 2.4 blocks

Oskar Carlsson might be the smartest player going around. Coming over with his brother, Magnus, they both made a huge splash in the league when they were 33 years old. Magnus, the offensive machine. Oskar, the defensive magician. He is the only player in the last 25 years to have double digits in all five major statistical categories as he always knew what to do to win games. He was loved by anyone you could think of and was always chatting with other players to get on their good side. The story as to why he was such a terrible scorer (2.5ppg career) is that when he was young he broke both his hands and they never fully healed, so he can pass and rebound but his shooting just wasn’t the same. Shame because he has won every Defensive Player of the Year award since he came into the league and to add even an average shooting form would put him right up the top of this list.

#12 – SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), 6’10”, 221lbs
Drafted - #1 by Boston Celtics in 2019
Teams – Boston, Memphis, Brooklyn, Orlando, Atlanta
Career Stats – 20.1 points, 1.2 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.5 blocks

There were superstars in the league before Raul Lopez but when he got drafted by the Celtics there was no doubt that he was something special. At 6’10” he had the length to do what he wanted with teams but also the quickness to play SG. Forget his career average as he has been played sparingly in his old age for the last three years which has skewed things, he even made Varlam Chavchavadze look like a bit player. Raul Lopez was a real superstar in every sense of the term, with jersey sales going through the roof and basketball blowing up in his home country of Costa Rica.

#11 – SG Mike Bickerstaf (Illinois), 6’6”, 186lbs
Drafted - #1 by Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025
Teams – Oklahoma City
Career Stats – 26.1 points, 5.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.0 blocks

It seems that Mike Bickerstaf has some kind of longevity serum that he isn’t sharing with anyone. First, he has played every single game ten out of the twelve seasons he has been in the league. Second, he has averaged less than 20 points a game twice, and that was in his first two seasons. If he keeps this progress up he should be close to the top 10 in points by the time he ends it. He’s also a great passer and rebounder, and a strong, vocal leader. He yearns for a championship after tasting the NBA Finals this season and will be itching to get back to it next season.

#10 – PG Cort Majishun (Washington), 6’3”, 187lbs
Drafted - #4 by Memphis Grizzlies in 2025
Teams – Memphis, Brooklyn
Career Stats – 19.9 points, 9.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.3 blocks

If anyone knows the highs and lows of NBA basketball, it’s Cort Majishun. Formerly Marius White, Majishun toiled away for nine years with the Memphis Grizzlies, trying to get a title with them. However they only went to the playoffs twice while Majishun was in charge and were bounced in the first round both times. He was still the best point guard in the league but he wanted more. Jumping to Brooklyn, he has captained the Nets to three straight titles and has cemented his place in the top ten. His court vision is magical (groan) while he is loved by his fans the world over. Many thought that he would be too arrogant to really be something special in the league but it seems that he has matured and is the guy people knew he could be.

#9 – PF Ishmael Faye (Virginia Tech), 6’10”, 252lbs
Drafted - #4 by Indiana Pacers in 2030
Teams – Indiana
Career Stats – 23.0 points, 1.2 assists, 8.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 2.3 blocks

If anyone needs to know why the Pacers are so good at the moment need not look any further, as Ish Faye is an all around superstar. He has missed a few games due to various injuries but none are career threatening which is good, because everyone needs to watch Faye play at some stage in his career. Not only has he been the premier shot blocker for the past five or so years, his quick hands also pick up plenty of steals. Oh, did I mention that he’s a great shooter and rebounder? And a great guy, who once bought tickets for the whole cinema when he went to see a move? Should I keep going? OK I will. He makes he’s teammates better, he’s only 25 years old and has already taken the Pacers to a title and Orlando are kicking themselves for taking Darryl Abrams at #3 in the draft instead of Faye.

#8 – PG Michael Taylor (Georgia), 6’2”, 155lbs
Drafted - #8 by Los Angeles Lakers in 2024
Teams – Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Milwaukee
Career Stats – 24.1 points, 7.0 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.5 blocks

For the last two years Michael Taylor has been the best player in the league, shown by his two Most Valuable Player awards. But let’s back track, starting at the start. Taylor was thought to be too small and too ball hungry to be a superstar in the league, and that was shown by his first seven years where he was great, All Star great, but not best of the last 25 years. Then he turned a corner, where he started passing the ball to his teammates who in turn passed the ball back to him in better positions to score so his point averages went up with his assists. He then moved from LA to Brooklyn for half a season before being traded to Milwaukee where he exploded. In his four years at the Bucks he has become a wrecking ball, winning two MVP awards and taking his team to the NBA Finals. He’s in the mold of the scoring guard who can put up a lot of numbers but the way Taylor has separated himself from the pack is to pick up his assists numbers to really be known as a true point guard. A super amazing point guard.

#7 – PF Michael McQuay (Providence), 6’11”, 251lbs
Drafted - #1 by Atlanta Hawks in 2027
Teams – Atlanta
Career Stats – 26.5 points, 1.3 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 0.9 blocks

Michael McQuay has been the best power forward drafted in the last 25 years. It’s not really even a contest, as he has been consistently above and beyond any other four men. He’s averaged 25 points or more in nine of his ten years of service and the only reason he isn’t higher really isn’t his fault. It’s Atlanta’s management, who have consistently failed to put a decent team behind him as McQuay has had to shoulder all of the load. He’s done it fantastically and has stayed loyal to the team that drafted him which is commendable but he needs to win a title or two to really be the best.

#6 – SF Tiburcio Tommasini (Italy), 6’5”, 228lbs
Drafted - #7 by Portland Trailblazers in 2023
Teams – Portland, Brooklyn, Milwaukee
Career Stats – 27.4 points, 1.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 0.3 blocks

Interesting fact: Tiburcio Tommasini has averaged 24 points or more for twelve straight seasons. That’s just insane that he has had that kind of consistency. Couple that with very good defence and a desire to get in with the tall trees and grab rebounds it’s not surprising to see him so high. Not so long ago there were heated discussions over the holonet about who was the best small forward in the game as there were three players who were so good and around the same age. It was exciting stuff to watch those three guys go at it, but I guess we know now that Tommasini was the third of the three. It might sound defeatist, but I wouldn’t be upset with being the sixth best player in the NBA for the last 25 years.

Part Three

#5 – SG John Johnson
Drafted - #10 by Detroit Pistons in 2013
Teams – Detroit
Career Stats – 21.8 points, 3.0 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.6 blocks

The first player to be drafted in the last 25 years to be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame, John Johnson was as good a leader as you can find. Not only was a dynamite scorer, he always seemed to be able to get his team the bucket or stop needed to win. He lead the Pistons to three titles in 2014, 2017 and 2019 but working the hardest and putting all of his body on the line. A worthy adversary to anyone around and sits at #11 on the all time points list.

#4 – SF Jack Dawkins (Fairfield), 6’9”, 245lbs
Drafted - #13 by Indiana Pacers in 2025
Teams – Indiana, Dallas
Career Stats – 22.0 points, 6.0 assists, 6.2 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 0.3 blocks

Do you remember Lebron James? Not the assistant coach at Brooklyn, the guy who was the best player on the planet at Miami and Utah? Well Jack Dawkins is so very similar to what Lebron could do it’s scary. Affectionately known as “Captain Jack” because he was named captain of the Mavericks when he was 22 years old and has held that title ever since, he is Dallas’ favourite son. He can score with the best but at 6’9” and 245lbs his passing, rebounding and discipline is what makes him so special. It’s strange to think that Dawkins wasn’t drafted by Dallas as he seems to be the most famous person in the city as he played exactly one game for Indiana before being traded. Those career stats are amazing and at only 31 years old he still has quite a few more productive years in him still.

#3 – SF Enrique Mendez (Argentina), 6’10”, 208lbs
Drafted – #6 by Minnesota Timberwolves in 2022
Teams – Minnesota
Career Stats – 25.3 points, 4.0 assists, 6.2 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 1.5 blocks

Enrique Mendez is 33 years old and currently in 13th spot on the all time scoring list. If he continues his fine form he will breeze into the top ten and be the highest scoring player drafted in the last 25 years. But he’s so much more than that, as he loves getting rebounds and he is a shot blocking machine which is weird because the rest of his defensive skills are pretty lacking. He won a title in 2023 with the Timberwolves, their first ever. This list also puts to bed the debate about who was better out of TIburcio Tommasini, Jack Dawkins and Enrique Mendez as Mendez has come out on top. He will almost certainly be inducted into the Hall of Fame which cap off an amazing career being drafted as a 19 year old straight out of Argentina.

#2 – PG Ledaryl McMillian (Fresno State), 6’0”, 179lbs
Drafted - #2 by Golden State Warriors in 2022
Teams – Golden State, Dallas
Career Stats – 24.4 points, 6.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 0.5 blocks

The Buzzsaw. The nickname that was given to McMillian early on in his career because he cut through everyone. And he did just that, averaging at least 18 points a game for every season except for the one just gone and at 35 years old you can probably forgive him. His ability to hit shots when there really shouldn’t have been a shot there is legendary and his four MVP awards and three championship rings attest to his interstellar game. It’s weird that when McMillian was scouted in college no-one expected him to amount to anything, especially coming from a small college like Fresno State. It wasn’t until the last month before the draft people took notice of him, getting nabbed at #2 by the Warriors. He was fantastic at Golden State, winning two MVPs but when he got traded to Dallas for Jeff Cunningham (#25 on this list) he really took his game to another level. Winning another two MVP awards and then taking his three titles, he cemented his place as the second best player to be drafted in the last 25 years.

#1 – C Mark Lewis (North Carolina State), 6’11”, 252lbs
Drafted - #1 by Utah Jazz in 2016
Teams – Utah, New Orleans, San Antonio
Career Stats – 18.4 points, 1.0 assist, 9.0 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 1.9 blocks

You might be asking why someone who never won a MVP award or won a title is the number one player on this list. To put things simply: Mark Lewis is the most dominant player drafted in the last 25 years. No doubt about it, there is no debate. Don’t look at his career stats because his last five or so years have been as a bench guy who only plays around 20 minutes a game. Look at his 14 years at the Utah Jazz, where he teamed up with Lebron James and Derrick Favors to form one of the best (if not THE best) front courts of all time. Mark Lewis was simply unstoppable and as close to Shaquille O’Neal as possible as no-one could slow him down on any night. Actually, there was one person, and that was Lewis himself as he was an atrocious free throw shooter. This is a problem because Lewis used to go to the foul line a lot, on average for his career 10 times a night. Unfortunately his shooting let him down, going 38.9% from the gimme line compared to his 51.4% from the field. Just think, if he could have shot at even 50% he would be up there with the best players of all time but he’ll just have to be happy with being the best of the last 25 years. At 39 years old it’s pretty certain he’ll retire and be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In what felt like an age, I’m finally back in the seat but as well all know, not for very much longer. But at least I can give Brooklyn a nice going away present with a #1 pick courtesy of Charlotte.

16 – Denver (0)
15 – Nevada (0)
14 – Orlando (0)
13 – Los Angeles (0)
12 – Golden State (0)
11 – Seattle (0)
10 – Memphis (0)
9 – New Orleans (-1)

Phoenix and their 3.2% chance have jumped.

8 – Toronto (-1)
7 – Portland (-1)
6 – Atlanta (-1)
5 – Philadelphia (-1)
4 – Brooklyn (-3)

Whoops.

3 – San Antonio (0)
2 – Phoenix (+7)
1 – Philadelphia (+1)

Awards time and I can definitely see either Marshod or Cort getting an All NBA selection.

Most Valuable Player:
Michael Harmon, Indiana Pacers – 25.2 points, 10.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 0.6 blocks

Very well deserved and don’t be surprised if he doesn’t back it up next season. At 23 years old the sky is the limit for this kid.

Defensive Player of the Year:
Michael Harmon, Indiana Pacers

Snaps Oskar Carlsson’s seven year reign of this award.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Randy Canal, Minnesota Timberwolves – 11.3 points, 5.0 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 0.3 blocks

Those are some great numbers off the bench and it’ll be great to see him get some more minutes next season.

Rookie of the Year:
LaZelle Milsap, Golden State Warriors – 11.7 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.2 blocks

Either Milsap or Steve Respert would be good picks here so it’s a good pick.

Coach of the Year:
Chris Duhon, Oklahoma City Thunder – 68-14 (.829)

I guess he took his team to the best record and made it to the NBA Finals, but I still think that Jeff Lane should have got it.

All NBA First Team:
Michael Harmon, Indiana Pacers
Mike Bickerstaf, Oklahoma City Thunder
Tiburcio Tommasini, Milwaukee Bucks
Michael McQuay, Atlanta Hawks
Jamie McMillian, Detroit Pistons

All NBA Second Team:
Lou Beck, Miami Heat
Tobe Slaughter, Dallas Mavericks
Jack Dawkins, Dallas Mavericks
Nathaniel Jackson, Utah Jazz
Schuyler Vanderwerken, Miami Heat

All NBA Third Team:
Joe Adras, Sacramento Kings
Jason London, Seattle Supersonics
Marshod Anderson, Brooklyn Nets
Reggie Smith, Memphis Grizzlies
Art Stevenson, Cleveland Cavaliers

All Defence First Team:
Michael Harmon, Indiana Pacers
Williams Shine, Detroit Pistons
Jamaal Lewis, Philadelphia 76ers
Keith Chapman, Seattle Supersonics
Schuyler Vanderwerken, Miami Heat

All Defence Second Team:
Camah Williams, Minnesota Timberwolves
Fletcher Sears, Milwaukee Bucks
Tiburcio Tommasini, Milwaukee Bucks
Ish Faye, Indiana Pacers
Brian Benton, Washington Wizards

All Rookie First Team:
LaZelle Milsap, Golden State Warriors
Kevin Tice, Minnesota Timberwolves
James Carroll, Houston Rockets
Steve Respert, Nevada Neon
Shaheen Mason, San Antonio Spurs

All Rookie Second Team:
Ryan Cornell, New York Knicks
Jon Childs, Brooklyn Nets
Mark Harmon, Minnesota Timberwolves
Dan Wilks, Charlotte Bobcats
BJ Watson, Toronto Raptors

I don’t even give Mr Hill a chance, I’m out of Brooklyn in a flash. It’s sad because I loved it here but it’s time to move on. Unfortunately there is only one suitor for my services, the Portland Trailblazers so I accept straight away. Also unfortunately, they suck and they have some pretty terrible contracts on the squad so it’s going to take a lot of my magic to turn this team around. At least we have the number seven pick this draft.

No wonder the Blazers had an opening at general manager because the owner, Abdul Jones who has just taken over the team this season, is worse than Mr Hill. Yes, seriously. He wants to spend as little as possible (which doesn’t work as we are already $7.7 million over the cap) and to make matters worse he has no interest in winning, at all. This might be a very quick stay.

My first meeting with Mr Jones doesn’t go well either.

“Hi Yaxley, I’ve got so many things to do today so let’s make this quick, how do you think this team will do this season?”

Great, another owner who doesn’t care about basketball.

“Looking over the squad unless there is a miracle we probably won’t be in the playoffs this season. I’ll try to rebuild as bes-“

“Oh well,” he interrupted, “what will this team cost?”

Are you serious? Why didn’t you just ask that to start with and I can be out of this meeting.

“We’re at $7.7 million now and I don’t see us going over that this coming season.”

“Fine, fine. Sounds good and good luck with the team.” With that he stood up and let me out. This may have been a mistake to sign with Portland.

Onto the team and it’s not pretty.

SG John Kelly – He’s 34 years old and owed $19 million over two years. He’s a bench player at best but he can still defend so he’ll get some court time. The second year is a team option which I won’t be taking.

SG Reggie Blake – Another 34 year old SG who is even worse than Kelly. Blake won’t get much burn at all but at least he’s only owed $3.5 million over two years.

PF Courtney Willis – Who in their right mind would give Willis, who sucks and is only 31 years old a $5 million contract. There is only one year on the contract left but it’s a player option so we’ll be stuck with him. Great.

PF Jason Sanders – I can now see why the last GM got sacked. Jason Sanders is another old player who got paid a while ago and is still getting paid, regardless of his play. He’s owed $14.5 million over two years which is ridiculous for someone who won’t play much this season. Sigh.

PF Mark Lyday – Our ‘superstar’. I put that in quotation marks because even though he’s good he really isn’t worth the $58 million he’s still owed. A jump shooting big who isn’t the best rebounder is not one for my team so I’ll look to trade him but I don’t expect much.

C Kevin Coley – Moving on from the rookie contract guy who will be gone after it finishes.

C Matt Piatowski – I’m seeing a trend here, old dudes with bad contracts that won’t play much. Piatowski is 35 years old and owed $10.6 million over two years which is about $1 million for every minute he’ll play a game.

C Calvin Ash – I’m not quite sure what to do with Ash. On one hand he’s a hyper efficient shooter (66% over four years), he’s an elite shot blocker (2.2bpg), he’s solid as a rock and he’s great with the fans and teammates. On the other hand he’s owed $48 million over four years which is just too much for someone who is a solid but not great starter. I’ll look to trade him but if I can’t get anything good I won’t mind keeping him for another year.

Coaches aren’t anything to write home about with Glenn Watkins being our head coach. He’s alright all around but with two years left (and if I’m still here) I’ll be looking elsewhere.

The official mock draft has been released and I’m really interested in what they think as we have the #7 pick.

1 – Philadelphia – C Chad DeWitt
2 – Phoenix – C John Meliet
3 – San Antonio – PG Mack Haston
4 – Brooklyn – C Kevin Morrison
5 – Philadelphia – PG Jermaine Floyd
6 – Atlanta – C Jeffrey Johnson
7 – Portland – SF Andy Bowman
8 – Toronto – SG Daniel Brazzle
9 – New Orleans – PF DJ Brown
10 – Memphis – SF Erdem Sancakli
11 – Seattle – PG Dean Willis
12 – Golden State – PF OJ Brown
13 – Los Angeles – SG Nathan Gordon
14 – Orlando – PG Andre Davenport
15 – Nevada – SF Ben LaLane
16 – Denver – SG Kelvin Cooper

Even though we have Calvin Ash I would love to be able to snag one of the centres in this draft, otherwise a PG or SF would be great. Mack Haston would be a steal but he won’t get to #7.

I want a few things from this draft: one of the excellent centres, a trade for some cap space, any will do and preferably if I can snag it a dynamite point guard. We’ll see.

2037 NBA Draft

1 – Philadelphia – C Chad DeWitt
No surprises here.

2 – Phoenix – C John Meliet
Hmm, not sure about this one. Kevin Morrison is much better while Meliet has been known to be a touch lazy.

San Diego offer me Chad Gaines for John Kelly and I accept without thinking. Kelly has two years left while Gaines has a team option THIS YEAR so I can renounce him for cap now. No brainer.

I try and trade for Jason Collins at OKC because he’s getting left to rot behind Axel Rancik but they wouldn’t have any of it. “Sorry, we like our chances of making a run this season and aren’t willing to give up a key player without getting a better one back”. Seriously? Collins averaged 10 minutes a game while Calvin Ash is the centre you have been looking for to put you over the edge! Stupid people. I then up the ante, throwing Mark Lyday to Chicago to see if I could snatch DJ Forbes but they rightfully said that he wasn’t good enough. I do find a deal though for an old friend.

Portland trade:
PF Mark Lyday
PF Jason Sanders
2037 1st round pick (#26)
2038 1st round pick
2039 1st round pick

Miami trade:
PG Lou Beck

Winner – Portland, just. They sent over too many first rounders as Lyday and Beck aren’t that far away in talent stocks but the major kicker here is that the Blazers got rid of Sanders’ $14 million, 2 year contract, freeing up more space.

I like it, Beck is a great floor general and at only 28 years old he’s still got plenty of life left.

3 – San Antonio – PG Mack Haston
The best point guard by far, Haston averaged a triple double in high school this year. His overall talent is fantastic as he can do most things. Still would have had Morrison over him though.

4 – Brooklyn – PG Jermaine Floyd
A bit of a blunder by my successor as Floyd is not the right man for this spot. They must have thought that Haston would be Cort Majishun’s protégé and panicked. There is still Kevin Morrison and Jeffrey Johnson on board with two more picks until ours. The Sixers won’t pick two centres in a row, will they?

5 – Philadelphia – PF DJ Brown
They don’t! They pick the very talented and very nice Brown to compliment Chad DeWitt. Brown wasn’t pegged to go this high but it’s not that big of a gap for him to jump a little.

I throw the remainder of our picks to Atlanta so we can move up one measly spot and they accept! I can’t believe that Kevin Morrison is now mine!

6 – Portland – C Kevin Morrison
I’m so giddy I almost fell over. If I was picking first I still would have picked DeWitt but I would have taken a good, long look at Morrison before I did. It shocks me that four other guys didn’t pick him and they will rue the day. Woo!

7 – Atlanta – C Jeffrey Johnson
They were looking at Johnson over Morrison even with the sixth pick but when I came knocking they were happy to take some second rounders off my hands. He’s Marlin Bain-esque. He can rebound, block shots and defender like a terrier and they should be happy with this pick.

8 – Toronto – SG Daniel Brazzle
He’s a good scorer and a great rebounder for his position, Brazzle is the best SG in this draft and has the best name so far. Say it with me, “Brazzle”.

One more trade and I’m out of assets.

Portland trade:
C Calvin Ash

Phoenix trade:
SF Danny Perez

Winner – Draw. This is a good trade all round as Ash is a hyper efficient scorer who can rebound and block shots and is only 26 years old. Perez on the other hand is a lanky SF who can fill up the bucket and keep in front of his man. Both are talented players and both fill a need. Win/win.

9 – New Orleans – PF Andy Bowman
I like this pick. He’s not a huge potential guy but he can come in and play both forward positions well and will be a great teammate as well. Exactly what you want from a number nine pick.

10 – Memphis – PG Dean Willis
Another high schooler who averaged a triple double, Willis has the eyes of a hawk when dealing out passes. Not the best scorer and picked a little too high but the Grizzlies will stop and nothing to get their Cort Majishun replacement.

11 – Seattle – PG Drew Martin
Meh is what can be said about Martin. He’s a decent shooter but will never be a good one. He can stay in front of his man but will never be known as elite. He can make a pass but he’ll never give you 10+. He's also really inconsistent and most likely not a lottery pick.

12 – Golden State – SG Andre Davenport
Good first step and one of the leaders in the quickness categories at the combine but he’s that one player who gets drafted much higher than he should because of his athleticism, not his actually game.

13 – Los Angeles – SG Nathan Gordon
Automatic when he gets his feet set and at 6’8” is a tall SG. Great to help out Lars Ray because Gordon is that kind of shooter you don’t want to leave open. Good pick.

There’s still some decent talent out there like OJ Brown, James Hansen, Axel Aspe, Edmund Johnson and Chri Morrison to bolster the bench/fringe starter positions.

14 – Orlando – SF Erdem Sancakli
I was almost going to put Sancakli on that list but his lazy attitude dropped him a little. He has great potential so if he can get off his butt he will be a steal.

15 – Nevada – SF Cory Shivers
Nope, bad pick. Nope nope nope.

16 – Denver – PF OJ Brown
Finally! This kid is top 10 talent at least. I know he’s a senior but seriously, this is a crazy good steal.

17 – Chicago – SG Kelvin Cooper
18 – San Diego – SF James Hansen
19 – Detroit – SF Ben LaLane
20 – Cleveland – C Edmund Johnson
21 – Houston – C Joe Robertson
22 – Boston – PF Josh Jones
23 – Sacramento – PF Malachi Felton
24 – Indiana – SG Jimmy Stallworth
25 – New York – PF Tony Brown
26 – Miami – PG Devin Coffee
27 – Minnesota – C Axel Aspe
28 – Washington – SF Alvin Fife
29 – Milwaukee – PG Ryan Dye
30 – Dallas – PG Quentin Young
31 – New Orleans – PF Buck Mason
He finally goes just near the end of the first round. Let’s see if he proves us wrong.

32 – Oklahoma City – PF Chri Morrison

To go along with a crazy draft we had some crazy trades. This is the most upside down draft in some time.

Detroit trade:
PF Ipolitas Margolis

Golden State trade:
PG LaZelle Milsap

Winner – Detroit. Margolis is a good player no doubt but he’s stuck behind a logjam of good big men. Milsap is the reigning rookie of the year and will fit in seamlessly with the Pistons.

Memphis trade:
Reggie Smith

New Orleans trade:
C Jerry Benton
2037 2nd round pick

Winner – Memphis. Just like on his other five teams, getting rid of Smith means a win. It doesn’t hurt when you get a fantastic centre in Jerry Benton either. Good luck NOLA, you’ll need it.

Detroit trade:
PG Detric Jones

Toronto trade:
PF Chris Barber

Winner – Draw. Both players are 33 years old, both are on their last year of their contract and both will start for their respective teams. That’s pretty even in my books.

New York trade:
PG Ryan Cornell

Utah trade:
C Sterling Adams
2037 2nd round pick

Winner – Utah. It's weird to see the Knicks give up on the #2 pick from last season but it's the Jazz's gain here. Adams is woefully average while at least Cornell has a chance for a brighter future.

New York trade:
C Antonio Henderson
2037 2nd round pick

Orlando trade:
PF Matt Reid

Winner – Orlando. Even though Reid is a good starter type player, Henderson is better and has one less year on his contract. Good deal by the Magic.

New Orleans trade:
SG Vlado Prazina

Minnesota trade:
PF Jesse Rucker
2037 2nd round pick

Winner – Minnesota. Prazina might be 32 years old but he can still bring the noise game in, game out. I have no idea what the Hornets are doing as they have just traded away their two best players for two PFs who will steal minutes off each other. Strange.

Brooklyn trade:
C Salvador Rios

Orlando trade:
C Eddie Walcutt

Winner - Orlando. Why? If they wanted to cut down on the big man glut they should have traded Rios for someone other than a centre! It seems that new general manager Magnus Carlsson is trying to make a team in his honour, all offense with no defense whatsoever. Groan.

I forgot about our free agents in my write up but there is only one that I want to keep. Tim Martin was our starting PG last season and I would love to keep him around as Beck’s back up but I renounce Brad Largent, Billy Manley, Chad Gaines, Marcus Parquet, Dan Oliver and Ryan Shipley as they all seem like dead weight.

And to my surprise, we have around $10 million in cap space, even with guys like Courtney Willis and Matt Piatowski but we only have seven players under contract so a lot of that will get eaten up by Tim Martin (hopefully) and filling out the roster.

Summer league is up next and our first game against the Nuggets is not pretty. Scott Dwiggins for Denver went 10/11 for 27 points as we lose easily 110-89. Kevin Morrison had a shocker, going 4/11 for 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 turnovers.

Next up is a little better as Morrison had 16 points and 8 rebounds but we still lose very easily, this time to Indiana 107-96. Jerald Perry had 18 points for the winners while Craig Alexander had 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bunch for us.

I’m glad we aren’t relying on these guys as we wouldn’t get far as we lose again, this time to Toronto 13-87. Kevin Morrison had his worst game yet, going 1/4 for 5 points and 5 turnovers as our other young centre, Kevin Coley, was good with 18 points. Maybe this is the reason Morrison dropped to sixth. The Raptors had seven players in double figures with Daniel Brazzle leading with 14 points.

Oh dear, we’re getting worse and worse. Outside of Kevin's 10/15 for 27 points (and 6 turnovers) we shot 35% to lose 112-77 to Nevada. Nick Harris had 25 points for the Neon while we had nothing as three of our players laid goose eggs while attempting at least five shots. Yuck.

Hey! Our last game of the summer league was actually a win! Kevin pulled it together again with 17 points as we won 95-86 over Houston. It might not have been pretty but it was a win.

Kevin might have had a roller coaster ride in his first five games as a Blazer but the best thing was his aggressiveness. He went to the line an average of eleven times over the five games which bodes well for the future.

With $10 million in cap space I’m going to look for a SG or a PF that is a bonafide starter while filling in the rest of the roster around our core of Beck/SG or PF/Perez/Morrison.

The top ten free agents are legit but most of them are restricted so I don’t see them going very far.

PG Michael Harmon*
PG Joe Adras*
PF Nathaniel Jackson
SF Tiburcio Tommasini
SF Juia Henchoz*
PF Zan Tepavac*
SF Darnell Kimbrough*
PG Michael Taylor
PF Julius Hobbs
C Ben Jensen*

I would love to get Tepavac but there have been numerous reports that OKC will match every off thrown at him so I offer Shaun Tebbs our cap space to the tune of $43.6 million over four years.

In two moves that surprised exactly zero people, Michael Harmon and Joe Adras re-sign with Indiana and Sacramento for maximum deals. Juia Henchoz joins them by re-upping two days later.

Yep, just as I suspected (and everyone else), Zan Tepavac re-signed with OKC for about $5 million less than the max. It’s good to see the Mavericks show some loyalty by re-signing a steeply declining Ledaryl McMillian for another year.

Woo! Shaun Tebbs decides that he likes the look of Portland and signs on the dotted line. Now to get back Tim Martin and somehow get someone who might look like a starting PF with the MLE. That will be a stretch.

I offer Tim Martin a 5 year, $20 million contract while my Hail Mary pass is sending a four year MLE contract to Apolinary Demowski which will need a miracle to succeed.

Tim Martin comes back two days later and signs back with us, so it seems that he was sitting by the phone waiting for us to call. Nathaniel Jackson goes back to Utah and Tiburcio Tommasini goes to Milwaukee for a hell of a lot of money.

Finally there is some movement as Darnell Kimbrough signs an offer sheet with Utah for a lot of money which seems to be overkill as there are better SFs out there.

It’s tender offer sheet signing day as most of the best free agents go back to their respective teams which is bad news for us as Apolinary Dembowski goes one more time around with Golden State. I contemplate going after Julius Hobbs but he is just too much of a bad shooter as no PF should average 43% for their career. And he’s 30 years od which is too old for our other players. Instead I offer a four year, $19 million contract to the much maligned former number one pick Derrick Culuko, because if anyone can get him good looks it’s Lou Beck.

Phoenix match the offer on Darnell Kimbrough which was to be expected and it’s really hard trying to find guys who have a good attitude and are willing to come off the bench but I’ll keep looking.

Derrick Culuko signs here, as does Jeffrey Womack, Andrew Brown, Fletcher Sears, Chris Waters and Traves Parker and at 15 players and $6 million over the cap I’m done.

Training camp comes and goes and the only player that has any real give or take here is Kevin Morrison and I’m happy to say that he’s coming along nicely. He won’t set the world on fire from day one like Chad DeWitt will but give him two/three years and he’ll be right there in the mix.

How the hell are we ranked ninth in the West? This team has had a major overhaul and I would say that we would make the playoffs at least. Grr, at least it’s more fuel for our hate fire.

Western Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1 – Utah Jazz
2 – Dallas Mavericks
3 – Seattle Supersonics
4 – Oklahoma City Thunder
5 – Houston Rockets
Last – San Antonio Spurs

I like Milwaukee, Minnesota or even Sacramento over the Rockets while putting OKC at #5 is a major disservice. I wonder how long the Spurs will be down the bottom.

Eastern Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1 – Brooklyn Nets
2 – Indiana Pacers
3 – Orlando Magic
4 – Atlanta Hawks
5 – Chicago Bulls
Last – Detroit Pistons

There is no way in hell that Detroit and Washington will be the two worst teams in the conference this season. No way. This conference is Brooklyn and Indiana and then a huge gap and then everyone else. Let me illustrate –

1 – Brooklyn Nets
2 – Indiana Pacers

3 – Everyone else.

Pre-Season All NBA First Team:
Michael Harmon, Indiana Pacers
Cameron Brown, Houston Rockets
Jack Dawkins, Dallas Mavericks
Michael McQuay, Atlanta Hawks
Jason Harriman, Denver Nuggets

Pre-Season All NBA Second Team:
Joe Adras, Sacramento Kings
Kenneth Long, Brooklyn Nets
Tiburcio Tommasini, Milwaukee Bucks
Ishmael Faye, Indiana Pacers
Schuyler Vanderwerken, Miami Heat

Pre-Season All NBA Third Team:
Axel Rancik, Oklahoma City Thunder
Cliff Havens, San Diego Riders
Marshod Anderson, Brooklyn Nets
Reggie Smith, New Orleans Hornets
Jerry Benton, Memphis Grizzlies

In my first and maybe last year of Portland Trailblazer basketball, here is your 2037-2038 Rip City players –

PG – Lou Beck
SG – Shaun Tebbs
SF – Danny Perez
PF – Kevin Morrison
C – Derrick Culuko
6th – Fletcher Sears
7th – Chris Waters
8th – Tim Martin
9th – Andrew Brown
10th – Traves Parker
11th – Kevin Coley
12th – Jeffrey Womack
13th – Reggie Blake
14th – Courtney Willis
15th – Matt Piatowski

Let’s get this season started! It’s a good start as we take care of the Wizards at home (it’s weird calling Portland home) with a 101-89 wire to wire win. Shaun Tebbs was fantastic with 25 points and 8 rebounds while Danny Perez kicked in 17 points. Kevin will come off the bench as coach doesn’t think he there yet but still had 10 points and 6 rebounds. Brian Benton led Washington with 22 points and 14 rebounds but Rowan Taylor only had 14 points and 7 turnovers.

Portland Trailblazers 1-0

One of our biggest tests is already upon us as we head to Texas to play the Mavericks. What followed was insane as our biggest lead was 36 points as we humiliate the Mavs 128-92. Shaun led us again with 24 points while Lou added 11 points and 17 assists. In fact, everyone on the active roster had at least three points with ten players with at least eight points. We shot 56% to their 38% with Tobe Slaughter, Jack Dawkins and Terry McKenzie combining for only 31 points.

Portland Trailblazers 2-0

I didn’t think that this team would gel as quickly as it has, and our teamwork was on show in our 110-86 win over Philly. Shaun was again our high man with 24 points and 9 rebounds while Lou was so close to a triple double with 9 points, 14 assists and 9 rebounds. It seems that he likes not having to score all the time. Kevin Morrison had a blinder off the bench with 14 points and 7 rebounds on 7/7 shooting. Padorin Ivelitsch is starting at C for some reason as he is only 6’9”, 210lbs but his quickness bamboozled Derrick for 29 points.

Portland Trailblazers 3-0

We withstand a 31 points outburst from Juia Henchoz to keep our streak rolling with a 125-108 win. It was Derrick who was the star, going 9/12 from the field for 28 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks as Shaun had his first bad night, going 5/15 for only 14 points but he did add 9 assists. Salvador Rios is starting at PF and had 8 points and 5 rebounds while going 1/7 from the field and 6/14 from the line.

Portland Trailblazers 4-0

Charlotte are always terrible it seems and we don’t give them any mercy, shooting 62% to win 136-90. That’s not the worst of it as our biggest lead was 56 points. Yikes, maybe I’ll go there after here. Shaun went 11/15 for 27 points while Andrew Brown had 17 points in 12 minutes off the bench. Everyone played well which explains the scoreline.

Portland Trailblazers 5-0

The Wizards try and get revenge but not against this steam roller as Shaun put up 34 points and Lou found his shooting stroke with 20 points, 13 assists and 7 rebounds as we wreck them 129-103. Traves Parker had his best game with 21 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. Rowan Taylor had another four turnovers to go with his 17 points.

Portland Trailblazers 6-0

Danny Perez pokes his head up with 30 points while holding Enrique Mendez to only 12 points as we win again. We didn’t just win, we dominated, winning the last 28-8 for a 117-73 demolishing. Shaun added 22 points but this is a team, not just a group of guys as everyone scored at least once. Camah Williams tried his best with 22 points but the way we are rolling it’s going to take a lot to stop us.

Portland Trailblazers 7-0

Shaun leads four Blazers with 20 points or more as we keep the ball rolling with a 128-110 away win over Seattle. He had 23 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals while Lou (25 points, 12 assists), Danny (21 points) and Derrick (20 points, 3 blocks) helped him out. Coach Watkins seems to be playing the starters a lot which is fine but in a few games if he doesn’t get more minutes I’m going to have to send Kevin down to the D-League for some burn. Off season pick up Julius Hobbs led the Sonics with 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Portland Trailblazers 8-0

The very good Bucks come to town and surprisingly we smash them, holding Michael Taylor and Tiburcio Tommasini to only 27 points on 7/29 shooting to win 105-85. Chris Waters was our star with 20 points and 13 rebounds which made up for Lou and Shaun’s rough nights. Derrick has a sore hip so Traves Parker filled in for him and he did well with 17 points and 9 rebounds. It seems that I’ve built a pretty good bench already.

Portland Trailblazers 9-0

If you were to tell me that in my first month running a new team, especially a team that was as bad as Portland was last season that we would start 10-0 I would have slapped you and called you a nancy. Well I’m the nancy now as we beat up the Suns 122-105 to go to 10-0. Shaun and Lou worked well off each other with 33 points, 21 assists and 14 rebounds between them while Traves is making the most of his starting role with 23 points before fouling out. New addition Darnell Kimbrough led Phoenix with 26 points and 10 rebounds but he needed 28 shots to get them.

Portland Trailblazers 10-0

My mistake, Kimbrough’s contract was matched by the Suns so he stayed in the desert instead of moving on to Utah.

The Kings just never got the Jaymes Kincaid/Joe Adras combo working properly as they are just too similar, and now they are trying Kincaid off the bench which is a waste of his talents. It didn’t matter where they played those two guys as we decimated them in the first quarter 39-21 to win comfortably 121-103. Shaun got back to his best with 26 points while Danny chipped in 20 points. Derrick is back in the starting line-up but that didn’t make Traves sulk as he added 16 points on 8/8 shooting off the bench.

Portland Trailblazers 11-0

I want to send Kevin down to the D-League but I’m fairly superstitious so I don’t want to change anything in this winning streak. With two games left in the month, both against the Sonics, it’s not worth it. Shaun had 22 points, 11 assists, 7 steals, 5 rebounds and a strained calf in our 135-114 dozen win game. Lou helped out on the scoring end with 31 points while Danny matched Shaun with 22 points. Jarrad Prewitt had 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 steals for the Sonics but the major point of emphasis is that Shaun will be down for nearly two weeks with this calf injury. Fletcher Sears will fill in at SG.

Portland Trailblazers 12-0

I can’t remember the last time I had a team go undefeated in a month, even with the stellar squad that I’ve put together over the years. Unfortunately, this isn’t going to be one of them as we just couldn’t get it together against the Sonics who shot 56% from the field and hit 36 free throws to give us some of our own medicine with a 137-124 win. Jason London had 28 points and 9 assists on 16/20 free throw attempts, while Alfons Dietz, Jarrad Prewitt and Julius Hobbs all topped 20 points. Chris was our best with 28 points but we missed Shaun badly as Lou had 8 turnovers.

Portland Trailblazers 12-1

With that I send Kevin down to the D-League.

Never in my wildest dreams would we start the season at 12-1, only losing our last game. I’m sure we will fall eventually but right now I’m on cloud nine. Houston are right on our tails at 13-4 while OKC just haven’t played enough games at 9-3. Golden State are currently last at 5-14 but there are a lot of teams huddled around there for warmth.

As expected, the Nets and Pacers are leading the way with Brooklyn at 16-2 (I should be getting a thank you basket any day now) while Indiana are at 15-5 then Detroit a ways back. New York for some reason are at 2-10 and planted at the bottom.

Thanks Emark, great to see another fan on the loose. There is plenty of dynasty before the Nets so if you ever need something to read there is always that.
