Part Two
#15 – PG Kevin Epps (South Carolina), 6’3”, 173lbs
Drafted - #3 by Portland Trailblazers in 2022
Teams – Portland, Brooklyn, San Diego
Career Stats – 13.8 points, 9.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.0 blocks
After all of these players who are phenomenal shooters it’s a little strange to see someone who has shot 39.3% from the field for his career in the top 15. What makes Kevin Epps so special in this shooter’s league? He’s the guy that gives them the looks. He’s an amazing passer and loves nothing more than for others to get their points. He’s also a fantastic rebounder for a skinny point guard. He’s the nearly the complete package, tallying the most triple doubles of anyone in the last 25 years. He is Jason Kidd reincarnated, not the best scorer but everything else he does better than most, and when he averaged 16 points, 12 assists and 7 rebounds for a season with the Riders, he deserves to be here.
#14 – PG Michael Harmon (Creighton), 6’4”, 157lbs
Drafted - #2 by Indiana Pacers in 2033
Teams – Indiana
Career Stats – 22.0 points, 8.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 0.5 blocks
Many might be surprised that someone who is only 23 years old is up so high but that is how enamored most people (this writer included) are with this kid. He’s a beanstalk at only 157lbs but the way he plays the game is just effortless. The odds on favourite to win this season’s MVP award, Harmon is the player that many thought that Camah Williams would be, a spectacular scorer that is a threat anywhere on the court. His defence is top notch while the loves passing the ball. In short, unstoppable. It will be amazing to watch this kid grow from the best point guard in the league (check), the best player in the league (arguably check) to the best point guard ever. Loads of pressure but if anyone can fulfill the promise it’s Michael Harmon.
#13 – SG Oskar Carlsson (Sweden), 6’7”, 220lbs
Drafted - #2 by Cleveland Cavaliers in 2030
Teams – Cleveland, Golden State
Career Stats – 2.5 points, 6.5 assists, 7.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 2.4 blocks
Oskar Carlsson might be the smartest player going around. Coming over with his brother, Magnus, they both made a huge splash in the league when they were 33 years old. Magnus, the offensive machine. Oskar, the defensive magician. He is the only player in the last 25 years to have double digits in all five major statistical categories as he always knew what to do to win games. He was loved by anyone you could think of and was always chatting with other players to get on their good side. The story as to why he was such a terrible scorer (2.5ppg career) is that when he was young he broke both his hands and they never fully healed, so he can pass and rebound but his shooting just wasn’t the same. Shame because he has won every Defensive Player of the Year award since he came into the league and to add even an average shooting form would put him right up the top of this list.
#12 – SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), 6’10”, 221lbs
Drafted - #1 by Boston Celtics in 2019
Teams – Boston, Memphis, Brooklyn, Orlando, Atlanta
Career Stats – 20.1 points, 1.2 assists, 6.6 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.5 blocks
There were superstars in the league before Raul Lopez but when he got drafted by the Celtics there was no doubt that he was something special. At 6’10” he had the length to do what he wanted with teams but also the quickness to play SG. Forget his career average as he has been played sparingly in his old age for the last three years which has skewed things, he even made Varlam Chavchavadze look like a bit player. Raul Lopez was a real superstar in every sense of the term, with jersey sales going through the roof and basketball blowing up in his home country of Costa Rica.
#11 – SG Mike Bickerstaf (Illinois), 6’6”, 186lbs
Drafted - #1 by Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025
Teams – Oklahoma City
Career Stats – 26.1 points, 5.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.0 blocks
It seems that Mike Bickerstaf has some kind of longevity serum that he isn’t sharing with anyone. First, he has played every single game ten out of the twelve seasons he has been in the league. Second, he has averaged less than 20 points a game twice, and that was in his first two seasons. If he keeps this progress up he should be close to the top 10 in points by the time he ends it. He’s also a great passer and rebounder, and a strong, vocal leader. He yearns for a championship after tasting the NBA Finals this season and will be itching to get back to it next season.
#10 – PG Cort Majishun (Washington), 6’3”, 187lbs
Drafted - #4 by Memphis Grizzlies in 2025
Teams – Memphis, Brooklyn
Career Stats – 19.9 points, 9.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.3 blocks
If anyone knows the highs and lows of NBA basketball, it’s Cort Majishun. Formerly Marius White, Majishun toiled away for nine years with the Memphis Grizzlies, trying to get a title with them. However they only went to the playoffs twice while Majishun was in charge and were bounced in the first round both times. He was still the best point guard in the league but he wanted more. Jumping to Brooklyn, he has captained the Nets to three straight titles and has cemented his place in the top ten. His court vision is magical (groan) while he is loved by his fans the world over. Many thought that he would be too arrogant to really be something special in the league but it seems that he has matured and is the guy people knew he could be.
#9 – PF Ishmael Faye (Virginia Tech), 6’10”, 252lbs
Drafted - #4 by Indiana Pacers in 2030
Teams – Indiana
Career Stats – 23.0 points, 1.2 assists, 8.2 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 2.3 blocks
If anyone needs to know why the Pacers are so good at the moment need not look any further, as Ish Faye is an all around superstar. He has missed a few games due to various injuries but none are career threatening which is good, because everyone needs to watch Faye play at some stage in his career. Not only has he been the premier shot blocker for the past five or so years, his quick hands also pick up plenty of steals. Oh, did I mention that he’s a great shooter and rebounder? And a great guy, who once bought tickets for the whole cinema when he went to see a move? Should I keep going? OK I will. He makes he’s teammates better, he’s only 25 years old and has already taken the Pacers to a title and Orlando are kicking themselves for taking Darryl Abrams at #3 in the draft instead of Faye.
#8 – PG Michael Taylor (Georgia), 6’2”, 155lbs
Drafted - #8 by Los Angeles Lakers in 2024
Teams – Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Milwaukee
Career Stats – 24.1 points, 7.0 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.5 blocks
For the last two years Michael Taylor has been the best player in the league, shown by his two Most Valuable Player awards. But let’s back track, starting at the start. Taylor was thought to be too small and too ball hungry to be a superstar in the league, and that was shown by his first seven years where he was great, All Star great, but not best of the last 25 years. Then he turned a corner, where he started passing the ball to his teammates who in turn passed the ball back to him in better positions to score so his point averages went up with his assists. He then moved from LA to Brooklyn for half a season before being traded to Milwaukee where he exploded. In his four years at the Bucks he has become a wrecking ball, winning two MVP awards and taking his team to the NBA Finals. He’s in the mold of the scoring guard who can put up a lot of numbers but the way Taylor has separated himself from the pack is to pick up his assists numbers to really be known as a true point guard. A super amazing point guard.
#7 – PF Michael McQuay (Providence), 6’11”, 251lbs
Drafted - #1 by Atlanta Hawks in 2027
Teams – Atlanta
Career Stats – 26.5 points, 1.3 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 0.9 blocks
Michael McQuay has been the best power forward drafted in the last 25 years. It’s not really even a contest, as he has been consistently above and beyond any other four men. He’s averaged 25 points or more in nine of his ten years of service and the only reason he isn’t higher really isn’t his fault. It’s Atlanta’s management, who have consistently failed to put a decent team behind him as McQuay has had to shoulder all of the load. He’s done it fantastically and has stayed loyal to the team that drafted him which is commendable but he needs to win a title or two to really be the best.
#6 – SF Tiburcio Tommasini (Italy), 6’5”, 228lbs
Drafted - #7 by Portland Trailblazers in 2023
Teams – Portland, Brooklyn, Milwaukee
Career Stats – 27.4 points, 1.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 0.3 blocks
Interesting fact: Tiburcio Tommasini has averaged 24 points or more for twelve straight seasons. That’s just insane that he has had that kind of consistency. Couple that with very good defence and a desire to get in with the tall trees and grab rebounds it’s not surprising to see him so high. Not so long ago there were heated discussions over the holonet about who was the best small forward in the game as there were three players who were so good and around the same age. It was exciting stuff to watch those three guys go at it, but I guess we know now that Tommasini was the third of the three. It might sound defeatist, but I wouldn’t be upset with being the sixth best player in the NBA for the last 25 years.
