New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

February Player of the Month – Nathan Gordon, Los Angeles Lakers – 29.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.0 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Ryan Holcomb, San Diego Riders – 18.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.3 blocks per game.

There were quite a few trades at the deadline but nothing wow worthy like previous years.

Cleveland trade:
PF Brian Holmes
SG Joe Mickens

Toronto trade:
SF Danny Perez
2041 2nd round pick

Winner – Toronto. Even though Perez used to be a great player, he’s just an average one now. He’s also 32 years old, seventh man at the Cavs and still owed over $11 million per for three more years. Yikes. Holmes and Mickens are both expirings and nothing more.

Charlotte trade:
C Charles Dubbs

Boston trade:
PG Tony Solverson
2041 2nd round pick

Winner – Both
. For Charlotte, they get an outstanding point guard that will definitely take the pressure of RT Adams and Tim King in the distributing sense. The Celtics get a massive expiring for someone that probably wasn’t in their long term plans.

Chicago trade:
2041 1st round pick

Portland trade:
PF Chris Waters

Winner – Chicago. This is a horrible trade by the Blazers. Not only was Waters their starting power forward and playing well, they get a measly first rounder from a team that will be top four in the East. The Blazers are imploding after two straight NBA Finals appearances (with one win).

Our first game of March was a comfortable 109-97 win over the Nuggets. Harms was the star with 28 points while Darryl and Sam combined for 25 points and 20 rebounds. Just think, with Sam, Darryl and Pin next year we are sitting pretty in the big man stakes. Scott Dwiggins led six Nuggets in double figures with 18 points but we shot 55% from the field.

Phoenix Suns 45-13

The train just keeps rolling as we dismantle the Magic 133-80 as Harms shows his full force with 44 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Cam had 21 points but it was Russell Haymon who won over the fans, hitting three threes in six minutes for 9 points at the end. Pete Edgerson had 20 points for the losers but Juia Henchoz was just flat out shut down, going 3/21 for 9 points.

Phoenix Suns 46-13

The Knicks aren’t horrible this year but without the injured Lou Beck they aren’t going anywhere against us as we ride 52 points from Cam and Harms to win 115-84. Sam is enjoying himself in the starting line-up with 10 points and 13 rebounds but we need to cut the turnovers down, beating the Knicks in that category 22-10. Reggie Smith hates it in New York and his 2/12 night won’t improve his attitude.

Phoenix Suns 47-13

In one of the strangest games of the season, we outlast the Kings where someone put a covering on the rings to win 78-67. Yep, 145 points combined is less than some teams have scored themselves. Cam led with 26 points and Darryl ripped 19 rebounds as neither team shot above 36%. To makes matters worse, we shot 2/23 from three with Cam going 0/12 from deep. He went 0/12 from out side the arc and 12/14 from inside it. Spooky. David Baxley, Gerald Howard, Chris Horvath and Joe Adras combined to shoot 18/67 from the field. Let’s just move along from here, shall we?

And just like that, Chicago puts up 151 points in their win over Houston to beat last game’s total score.

Phoenix Suns 48-13

We were never going to let the 15-53 Sixers beat us, but it was good to see us pummel them for good measure, winning 118-92. Darryl joined our scoring duo of Cam and Harms with 21 points, which was matched by Cam and bested by Harms by two points. Keith Chapman made an appearance off the bench with 11 points and 12 rebounds as Sam fouled out early. Chad DeWitt isn’t living up to his #1 pick status but did well with 23 points and 6 rebounds.

Phoenix Suns 49-13

Marshod has been cleared to play after his broken finger injury which is great news. He’s not 100% fit but he’ll slot into the starting line-up and we’ll see from there. He nabs 14 points in his limited minutes but it doesn’t matter as we win again, this time 113-105 against Memphis. Harms was the destroyer with 33 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds while Josh Mayes had 19 points in 23 minutes off the bench. The Grizz had six players in double figures with Kennedy Bracey leading them with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Phoenix Suns 50-13

Ugh, I hate Hell Weeks. Stupid expansion teams. I guess they aren’t expansion teams any more as they’ve been in the league 21 years already. Anyway, we beat the Riders 115-96 as Marshod gets into his groove for 27 points and 11 rebounds. He was nearly beaten for player of the game by Harms’ 22 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds but Marshod had a much better shooting night. Brian Stackhouse put up 28 points and 8 assists on Harms but was undone by Cliff Havens’ 7/22 shooting night.

Phoenix Suns 51-13

Forgot to say, yay 50 wins!

Damn, the Grizz just monster us in the last term, turning a 20 point deficit into a 122-116 win as they blast 48 points in the last term to steal the win. Kennedy Bracey was the hero with 34 points and 10 rebounds, most in the final term while Adam Bell had 12 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks. Marshod was our best with 29 points but Cam and Harms both fouled out late in the third term, right when their run started.

Phoenix Suns 51-14

Well that’s annoying, we led Devan Gross (who?) take us to school, as the bench guy had 23 points in 24 minutes as the Bucks beat us 116-108 for a losing streak. Another Milwaukee bench guy, Jarvis Pringle (excellent name btw) had a blinder with 13 points, 12 assists and 7 steals filling in for Mike Bickerstaf. Harms had 26 points for us but when Cam and Marshod shoot 12/40 it’s going to be a rough night.

Phoenix Suns 51-15

It really feels like back in Dallas when we had a crazy good scoring point guard and won a lot of titles. That second part hasn’t happened yet but we have a crazy good scoring point guard in Michael Harmon who had 33 points and 8 assists in our 120-91 demolition of Chicago. Marshod added 22 points while Cam had 21 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. Chris Waters should not have been traded from Portland and is showing why with 27 points for the Bulls.

Phoenix Suns 52-15

Marshod is fully fit now and showed his skill with 35 points as we rampage through the Heat 121-83. Du Yip made an appearance with 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench as we had this wrapped up after quarter time. Mark Lyday is loving it in Miami being the man and had 17 points and 8 rebounds tonight.

Phoeinx Suns 53-15

It was good to see #1 pick Tip Rice again and this time he didn’t disappoint, going for 26 points and 9 rebounds and really showing what his potential can be. The Warriors lost 132-109 but that doesn’t matter when they have some a good building block. We’re smack bang in win-now mode as Cam brought out the big guns with 31 points while Keith had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Phoenix Suns 54-15

Jaymes Kincaid might be 35 years old and not playing much but he can still bring the noise, shown by his 15 points in the last term as the Kings force overtime on our home court. Fortunately for us, four Sacramento players fouled out including Joe Adras, David Baxley and Chris Horvath so we had the legs to win 120-116. Harms was spectacular with 37 points while Marshod and Cam added 51 points between them.

Phoenix Suns 55-15

Our last game of March was dominated by Marshod Anderson, who went 13/26 for 37 points and 10 rebounds as we take care of the Wolves 107-83. Sam had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Keith was a dynamo off the bench with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks in only 15 minutes. Wow, talk about efficient. Justin Marshall led Minny with 18 points but they shot 37% which isn’t good against a team as good as us.

Phoenix Suns 56-15

We’ve punched out the lead to seven games in the West over the 49-23 Spurs and 48-25 Riders and we’ll see our bench guys get a good run so we can rest our superstars. Nevada are the only team in the conference with 50+ losses at 19-51.

We’re not alone at the top as Detroit are 56-20 and right behind us. Sure they’ve lost five more games but they have the same amount of wins so we can’t count them out. Charlotte have got to the 50 win plateau at 50-24 and Atlanta are third at 45-30. Washington’s season has bottomed out at 15-60 and they are even worse than the 17-57 Sixers which is hard to do.

March Player of the Month – Ishmael Faye, Indiana Pacers – 29.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 2.3 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Tip Rice, Golden State Warriors – 17.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.

With eleven games to go in the season we have a five game lead over Detroit for the best record in the league so I’m hoping we can wrap this up quickly.

And what do you know, we play the Pistons in our first game of April. And predictably, we lose 112-102 as Jamie McMillian blasts us with 28 points and 8 rebounds. We just couldn’t stop them, as even though Detroit turned the ball over 19 times we still got beaten as seven Pistons were in double figures. Our big three combined for 65 points but got no help from anyone else.

Phoenix Suns 56-16

Marshod took last game to heart and came out swinging, going 14/24 for 33 points as we embarrass the Hornets 126-75 that was over after a 31-10 first quarter blitz. Everyone got plenty of court time and other than Marshod it was a team effort. David Stetson had 16 points for the losers but they were not ready for this game.

Phoenix Suns 57-16

In one of his best games in his short career, Sam had 14 points, 19 rebounds and 4 blocks against the elite Zan Tepavac as we run out 92-84 winners over OKC. Cam had 19 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds as we outscore the Thunder 30-14 in the last to take the win. Axel Rancik had 21 points and 5 steals in the loss as OKC only shot 35% from the field.

Phoenix Suns 58-16

It’s still only a five game lead over Detroit even with our 110-90 win over our good friends Indiana. Harms didn’t want any of it with 26 points and 7 assists while Cam added 29 points. Our two old friends had shockers as Abel Williams went 3/14 for 6 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks while Winston Shannon went 3/12 for 8 points and 7 assists. Other than tonight’s game, those two Pacers are doing quite well for themselves.

Phoenix Suns 59-16

Just like most of our season, it’s been our big three who has done the damage as Harms, Marshod and Cam went for 81 points as we smother the Cavs 112-103. No-one else on our side had more than 8 points, so let’s hope these guys are on song in the playoffs. Pete Anderson had 23 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland.

Phoenix Suns 60-16

Yay, 60 wins!

With our 129-104 win over Utah we have at least sewn up equal first place in the league as Marshod and Harms put up 57 points in the win. Cam wasn’t left out, adding 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists while Keith had 18 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Gamal Hicks is a dynamo for the Jazz with 18 points and 12 assists but got no help from his teammates.

Phoenix Suns 61-16

And with that, it’s ours. Harms puts on a clinic with 30 points as we take the game 120-89 over Milwaukee. It will be good to see some of the other guys get a run in the last four games and see Marshod, Harms and Cam get a well deserved rest. Jeffrey Johnson, a guy I traded a while ago had 13 points in only 14 minutes before fouling out.

Phoenix Suns 62-16

The new starting five is Russell Haymon/Romanos Demosthenous/Josh Mayes/Darryl Abrams/Sam Russell. The last two still wanted to play so they get their wish.

Geez, I did not expect that. Yeah the Bucks aren’t that good but it was impressive to see our two rookie centres lighting it up. Oh yeah, I recalled Pin-zhen Yuan from the D-League for his first career game and he did not disappoint, going for 19 points and 10 rebounds in our 104-92 win. He wasn’t best on ground though as our other rookie centre, Sam Russell had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 8 blocks in the game. Pat Sola had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the losers as Tiburcio Tommasini only scored 16 points.

Phoenix Suns 63-16

Yikes, as good as last game was, this was as bad. We went 32% from the field to lose 100-72 against Sacramento. Pin must have bought into his own hype and decided to shoot everything, unfortunately he was ice cold, going 1/12 for 2 points. Sam wasn’t much better with a ¼ night which was the same for Roman. Own only saviour was Du Yip who had 23 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists off the bench. Gerald Howard might have had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks but seeing Diego Acosta rip down 21 rebounds and swat 4 blocks was magical.

Phoenix Suns 63-17

We stay in Sacramento and again we get smashed, this time 115-91 as David Baxley did the damage with 21 points and 10 rebounds. It seems that our rookies are still learning as Pin and Sam combined for 10 points and 11 rebounds while the Kings’ PF/C combo of Gerald Howard and Diego Acosta had 30 points, 15 rebounds and 6 blocks. Just too much experience right now.

Phoenix Suns 63-18

Our last game of the season was better, but not good enough as we ran into a red hot Pete Edgerson as we lose 127-118 to Orlando. Edgerson went 11/18 from the field, 5/6 from three and 16/20 from the line for 43 points as no matter what we tried, we just couldn't stop him. Russell Haymon was excellent with 20 points and 17 assists before fouling out (trying to guard Edgerson) while Sam went 11/11 for 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. All in all, these four games have been a good experience for our younger players.

Phoenix Suns 63-19

2041 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #8 Miami
#2 Charlotte vs. #7 Chicago
#3 Atlanta vs. #6 Brooklyn
#4 Indiana vs. #5 Cleveland

Western Conference
#1 Phoenix vs. #8 Denver
#2 San Antonio vs. #7 Oklahoma City
#3 San Diego vs. #6 Utah
#4 Dallas vs. #5 Sacramento

We swept the season series 4-0 but there is always something in the back of my mind about Denver as they have a knack of upstaging us.

Western Conference First Round – Denver vs. Phoenix

Point Guard
Gustavo Fonseca vs. Michael Harmon
16.2 points, 6.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds vs. 25.0 points, 9.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds

Even if it wasn’t the best player in the league (arguably) that Fonseca was going against he still wouldn’t get the advantage here because he’s not a point guard. He’s so far from a point guard that this strategy might sink the whole Nuggets playoff race. He’s a scorer and nothing else and going against Harmon is just betting to fail.

Winner - Phoenix

Shooting Guard
Brett Felts vs. Cameron Brown
13.0 points, 3.2 assists, 3.7 rebounds vs. 22.1 points, 5.8 assists, 4.4 rebounds

Felts is the definition of a good bench player. He can score alright and his defense is average but he is no way a solid starting shooting guard. He will get eaten alive by Brown who is roaring for a title.

Winner - Phoenix

Small Forward
Tom Jordan vs. Marshod Anderson
15.5 points, 2.1 assists, 6.8 rebounds vs. 28.3 points, 1.3 assists, 6.2 rebounds

Jordan is the best player on the Nuggets squad, he’s young (23 years old), a good scorer and a willing defender. Unfortunately he’s going up against the best scorer in the league in Marshod Anderson so Jordan will need to all he can to slow down his opponent.

Winner - Phoenix

Power Forward
Scott Dwiggins vs. Sam Russell
17.0 points, 1.5 assists, 7.1 rebounds vs. 7.3 points, 0.9 assists, 7.2 rebounds

If the Nuggets are to pull of the impossible, Dwiggins is going to have to be a hero. He’s their best scorer and he’s their leader but those things don’t win you games by yourself so he’s going to need to play out of his mind and hope he has some friends along the way. Russell has been fantastic in his rookie year, so much so that he got Abel Williams traded. His 2.5 blocks a game don’t hurt either.

Winner - Denver

Centre
Leon Oliver vs. Darryl Abrams
13.7 points, 1.2 assists, 6.2 rebounds vs. 7.8 points, 1.3 assists, 7.8 rebounds

Even though Oliver is 32 years old he can still bring something to the table but it will get knocked off by Abrams’ unbelievable defense. Expect the much shorter and lighter Oliver to be neutralized here.

Winner - Phoenix

Bench
Jason Harriman, Erwin McIntosh, OJ Brown vs. Pin-zhen Yuan, Keith Chapman, Romanos Demosthenous

It’s a gamble to keep Pin-zhen Yuan on the roster after only four games in the NBA but his performance in the D-League and in those four games have people talking. The Nuggets’ bench is old and not that effective while Chapman and Demosthenous are quality contributors to this Suns side.

Winner – Phoenix

Prediction – Phoenix in four. The Suns have three of the best players in the whole league which is three more than the Nuggets have. Colour a lot of people surprised if this doesn’t end in a sweep.

Game one was pretty much what people thought it was going to be – Michael Harmon torching his opponent (40 points, 8 assists) and the Suns smashing the Nuggets (106-87). And yeah, that was pretty much it. Marshod added 24 points while even though Sam had 2 points, he did put up 13 rebounds and 5 blocks as well. Tom Jordan was decent with 26 points but went 10/24 for those hoops.

Phoenix leads 1-0

The Nuggets scored one more point than our last game which sounds like good new for them, right? Nope, as Marshod, Cam and Harms combined for 86 points, 20 assists and 13 rebounds as we pour on 133 points to Denver’s 107. Our bigs were also amazing with Sam going 7/7 and Darryl shooting 4/4 for 25 points on 11/11 shooting. Nice. Erwin McIntosh had 20 points off the bench for Denver but when we shoot 69% for the game, no-one is beating us.

Phoenix leads 2-0

The series shifts to Denver and it is always difficult to play in the light air. In the first quarter it was no trouble as we got out to a 29-14 lead but then after that it was all over. The Nuggets smashed us in the last three quarters to take their first win of the series 121-108. Tom Jordan had 28 points, Brett Felts added 27 points and 11 assists and even though we shot 56% to their 45%, we turned the ball over way too much and they grabbed a lot more offensive rebounds to us. This set up their 95 field goal attempts to our 77. Marshod was our best with 26 points but we need to grab a rebound and hold onto the ball.

Phoenix leads 2-1

That’s more like it. Even though it wasn’t pretty we still won 104-93. It was only eleven points even though we got out to a 39-18 first quarter lead which just goes to show that in the two Colorado games we ran out of puff because of the atmosphere. Cam was our stand out with 28 points while Sam did his best with 4 points and 11 rebounds. The Nuggets had seven players in double figures but their highest was Scott Dwiggins with only 14.

Phoenix leads 3-1

There was one sweep in the playoffs with #1 Detroit cooling off the #8 Heat 4-0.

I’ll give it to Denver, they don’t quit. Even though we had a great series lead they didn’t give up and now we’re going back to Denver with a 3-2 series equation as they beat us 101-91. Tom Jordan was amazing with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists and even though Marshod had 25 points, Jordan totally outplayed him. Gustavo Fonseca definitely isn’t a point guard which was shown by his 10 turnovers, he did have 24 points in the win.

Phoenix leads 3-2

#5 Cleveland caused an upset, knocking off the defending champs the #4 Pacers 4-1.

Good news, Marshod had a whole lot of threes with 33 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Even better news is that we move onto the next round with a 127-116 victory in Denver. Harms had a good game as well with 25 points while Roman added 13 points in only 16 minutes. Scott Dwiggins tried his best with 25 points and 8 rebounds but they just weren’t good enough.

Phoenix wins 4-2

In another upset, the #7 Thunder rode a great team effort to knock off the #2 Spurs in six games. Otherwise, there are four series going the distance. Unfortunately for underdog supporters, all four of the favourites won their game seven and moved on.

2041 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #5 Cleveland
#2 Charlotte vs. #3 Atlanta

Western Conference
#1 Phoenix vs. #4 Dallas
#3 San Diego vs. #7 Oklahoma City

In our season series we won 2-1 against the Mavericks and the one loss was by a single point.

Western Conference Semi-Final – Dallas vs. Phoenix

Point Guard
Earl Harris vs. Michael Harmon
15.1 points, 15.0 assists, 3.1 rebounds vs. 25.5 points, 7.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds

Harris has been a good/great point guard in the league for quite some time now but going to Dallas has sent his game into a whole other level. Averaging 14.5 and 2.6 assists in the last two seasons he has become the best passing guard in the league. He’s got his work cut out for him guarding Harmon as Harris’ defence is below average and Harmon is itching for a title.

Winner - Phoenix

Shooting Guard
Jason London vs. Cameron Brown
13.3 points, 1.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds vs. 23.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.7 rebounds

Ten teams in 15 years. That’s how toxic London is to his teammates. He’s an OK scorer now but at 34 years old all he brings to the team is distraction. Cameron Brown is the third musketeer on this star studded Suns outfit but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a top three shooting guard in the league.

Winner - Phoenix

Small Forward
Chris Howard vs. Marshod Anderson
27.4 points, 2.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds vs. 27.0 points, 1.7 assists, 5.2 rebounds

Where did Howard come from? Coming from the small college of Charlotte he was drafted #28 and is in his third year. He’s a willing defender and those scoring numbers are insane for someone who has probably had no game plan done for him. He’ll get a lesson in scoring by Anderson but this could be a huge coup for Howard if he can upstage the league scoring leader.

Winner - Phoenix

Power Forward
Matt Hackett vs. Sam Russell
14.3 points, 1.1 assists, 10.6 rebounds vs. 8.2 points, 0.8 assists, 8.2 rebounds

This is probably one area where the Mavericks have an advantage. Not much, but it’s still a plus. Hackett is a very good scorer and rebounder and will need to go nuts to have a sniff of causing an upset. Russell is the opposite, he’s a fantastic defender, especially blocking shots but his offense isn’t quite there yet. This could be interesting.

Winner - Dallas

Centre
Kresimir Balas vs. Darryl Abrams
14.1 points, 1.6 assists, 7.1 rebounds vs. 8.3 points, 1.3 assists, 5.5 rebounds

It seems that the 1-3 positions are in favour of the Suns while the 4-5 positions are towards the Mavericks as Balas has been a rock for Dallas for the past decade. He was around when the Mavericks were untouchable, winning three titles but now that is a distance memory. He’ll be up against it as Abrams is one of the best defenders in the league, big man or not.

Winner - Dallas

Bench
Tobe Slaughter, Andy Bowman, Chris Prater vs. Pin-zhen Yuan, Keith Chapman, Romanos Demosthenous

How is Tobe Slaughter not starting? On the season he averaged 20.7 points in only 24.7 minutes and in the playoffs he’s upped that to 23.7 points in 27.6 minutes. He’ll have to do that and more for Dallas because the rest of the bench is pretty average. Except for Andy Bowman who is averaging 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks but will be vastly underused because he has injured his finger quite bad not long ago. The Suns’ bench has quality players but they rely on their starters a lot, especially Harmon, Brown and Anderson.

Winner – Dallas

Prediction – Phoenix in six. They weren’t the monster everyone thought they would be in the first series but got by with the sheer talent of the roster. They’ve warmed up and the big three should blast through the Mavericks.

It seems that Michael Harmon wanted to put Earl Harris in his place as some writers have put Harris a bit too close to Harmon for his liking. Sure, Harris had 7 points, 13 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals but he did turn the ball over 5 times and only shot 3/13. Harmon was electric with 27 points and 17 assists as we take game one easily 119-95. Cam helped out with 34 points while Keith put up 12 points and 3 blocks in only 8 minutes. Jason London had 20 points while Chris Howard had 22 points and 9 rebounds but we had this all the way.

Phoenix leads 1-0

Harms is really taking Harris to the sword, going 18/31 for 42 points, 8 assists and 6 steals as we obliterate our opponents 121-98. Cam was again our second best with 25 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds as Sam and Marshod put up 27 points, 23 rebounds and 4 blocks. We’re pretty much automatic at home so if we can take one or both in Dallas it should be a good rest for us. Oh yeah, Harris had a horrible time, going 3/9 for 11 points, 5 assists and 8 turnovers.

Phoenix leads 2-0

The Dallas crowd is not used to being smashed this bad so they were up for a battle. Earl Harris was everywhere, and I mean everywhere with one of the fattest stat lines in recent memory with 11 points, 21 assists, 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 12 turnovers. Phew, in only 37 minutes as well. However, it was our big three who did the damage (again) as they combined for 81 points, 22 assists and 18 rebounds as we take a three game lead with a 126-115 win. This game seemed to be played in fast forward so it will be interesting to see how the teams bounce back tomorrow night in game four.

Phoenix leads 3-0

The Mavericks finally woke up and again it was a fat stat line from Harris that did the damage – 11 points, 13 assists, 8 turnovers, 7 steals, 6 fouls and 5 rebounds as they take one from us 119-109. Tobe Slaughter made up for Chris Howard’s rough night with 29 points off the bench as we just couldn’t slow them down. Harms led us with 30 points but only had 4 assists which shows that there was too much isolation and not enough ball movement.

Phoenix leads 3-1

The crowd and I’m sure a lot of neutral watchers wanted this game to go to Dallas but after a 36-20 first quarter blitz by us the game’s tension blew away. Marshod led us with 31 points but it was our guards that did the business as we won the game and the series 120-105. Cam and Harms put up 47 points, 18 assists and 9 rebounds to decimate Dallas. Earl Harris didn’t go out wondering with 15 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds as I’ve gained a lot of respect for him after this series.

Phoenix wins 4-1

The two number three seeds got through in six games with Atlanta beating Charlotte and San Diego beating Oklahoma City but it took Detroit seven games to get past those pesky Cavs.

2041 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #3 Atlanta

Western Conference
#1 Phoenix vs. #3 San Diego

We won the season series 3-0 and the way we’re going, not much is going to stand in our way. The city of Phoenix’s atmosphere has escalated incredibly over these playoffs, they can small glory. Disregarding the whole “never won a title even though we came into the league in 1968” thing, the Suns haven’t even got out of the second round in the near 30 years I have been in the league. In fact, they’ve only made it to the playoffs six times which is probably why there are some crazy fans out there. I’ve never seen so many people wearing Phoenix jerseys in public.

Western Conference Finals – San Diego vs. Phoenix

Point Guard
Brian Stackhouse vs. Michael Harmon
8.8 points, 10.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds vs. 27.4 points, 8.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds

After wasting away in Phoenix and Washington, Stackhouse has really come into his own in San Diego. Unfortunately for him, he’s going up against arguably the best player in the league who just ripped a better point guard (Earl Harris) to shreds. This has the potential to get really messy.

Winner - Phoenix

Shooting Guard
Cliff Havens vs. Cameron Brown
32.6 points, 1.6 assists, 5.5 rebounds vs. 22.8 points, 6.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds

Now this is why we watch basketball. This has to be the best match up in the whole playoffs with the two best shooting guards duking it out for supremacy. I’m sure that in the chaos of the WCF this battle might just take on its own life and people will be talking about the Havens vs. Brown duel more than the actual series.

Winner - Draw

Small Forward
Ryan Holcomb vs. Marshod Anderson
15.1 points, 0.8 assists, 4.8 rebounds vs. 25.9 points, 2.0 assists, 5.9 rebounds

Holcomb has a lot to like and at only 20 years old he has a lot of growing to do. The overwhelming favourite for rookie of the year, Holcomb is a great scorer already and a menace on the other end. He’ll need to play like a veteran instead of a rookie against Anderson who will be looking to add to the title he won in Brooklyn.

Winner - Phoenix

Power Forward
Dan Bonney vs. Sam Russell
16.5 points, 1.3 assists, 7.9 rebounds vs. 9.7 points, 1.1 assists, 9.2 rebounds

This could be an interesting battle, with Bonney being similar to Russell, just a bit more advanced. He’s not the best scorer but is a good rebounder and shot blocker which is what Russell is now so will these two cancel each other out or make each other play better?

Winner – San Diego

Centre
Mitch Edwards vs. Darryl Abrams
16.8 points, 1.1 assists, 10.7 rebounds vs. 8.2 points, 1.5 assists, 6.2 rebounds

If the Riders want to cause this upset then Edwards is going to have to play out of his mind. He has the skills there but will he be able to get away from Abrams suffocating defence. For San Diego’s sake, let’s hope so.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Brian Burks, Bernard Leis, Torraye Driggers vs. Pin-zhen Yuan, Keith Chapman, Romanos Demosthenous

Burks and Driggers play decent minutes but the rest of the Riders’ bench are pretty useless. On the other hand, Phoenix’s bench really bring something to the team and will need to be checked or else small leads will balloon into large ones.

Winner – Phoenix

Prediction – Phoenix in six. If Havens and Edwards can get going then it might be different but if they fail then it’s going to be a short series.

Well that was unexpected. Both teams shot sub-40% and Marshod sprained his wrist but we still won in front of a sell out crowd 89-81. The SG battle was definitely one sided with Cliff Havens having 31 points while Cameron Brown went 3/12 for 11 points and 4 turnovers. His good friend Michael Harmon made up for it with 40 points and 8 rebounds to nearly score half our total. Marshod won’t miss any games but he won’t be on top of his game.

Phoenix leads 1-0

All throughout the first half there was a tension in the air. The crowd was just waiting for something huge to happen as we were only up by two at half time. Just wait a little longer they kept thinking. Their patience paid off as we exploded out of the gate in the second half to take the game by 20, 112-92. Harms had another huge game with 38 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds while Cam hit back at Cliff Havens with 24 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds and held Havens to only 21 points. Ryan Holcomb also had 21 points but it was good to see that we can turn on the jets when needed.

Phoenix leads 2-0

In the last 30 years the Riders/Clippers have made it past the first round only three times so it’s pretty obvious that their fans are a rabid as ours to make it through to the NBA Finals. And in their favour, Michael Harmon had a stinker with only 15 points on 5/18 shootng. Marshod didn’t do much either, fouling out with only 16 points against his name. The Riders couldn’t capitalize though as Cliff Havens went 8/21 for 21 points as we take game three 110-102. The star was Cam Brown who had 25 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds and really took it upon himself when the game was on the line.

Phoenix leads 3-0

I could go on and on trying to build tension but after our 39-19 whitewash in the second quarter this game was toast. Cam Brown picked up from where he left off last game with 41 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists as we take the game and the series 119-100 as the brooms came out. It’s lucky we had Cam as Harms and Marshod combined for only 23 points. Cliff Havens had 27 points but he shot badly which was a theme for the playoffs. Mitch Edwards didn’t do anything for the whole series and I think he needs to work on his game a bit more in the off season.

Phoenix wins 4-0

In a series that had everything, the Atlanta Hawks went up 3-0 against Detroit before the Pistons rallied to tie the series 3-3. In game seven it was vintage Michael McQuay as he led his Hawks to a 117-100 win with 22 points and 9 rebounds to take the Hawks to their first NBA Finals since 1958 when they were the St. Louis Hawks. It’s also when they last won a championship.

2041 NBA Finals

#3 Atlanta vs. #1 Phoenix

We won both games against the Hawks but judging by the press it seems that everyone is on the ATL bandwagon as they haven’t won in longer than we have. Everyone wants Michael McQuay to win a title as well so we are definitely the grinches in this scenario. Also, is it weird that I have had four of the five starters for Atlanta on one of my teams?

Point Guard
Curtis Meuller vs. Michael Harmon
14.2 points, 10.6 assists, 3.0 rebounds vs. 27.1 points, 7.9 assists, 4.1 rebounds

Harmon has been on a tear in the last two series and even though Mueller is a good floor general who has really made the most of his playing time in Atlanta, he is just too outmatched to stay in the fight.

Winner - Phoenix

Shooting Guard
Chip Hickerson vs. Cameron Brown
12.6 points, 7.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds vs. 23.5 points, 6.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds

Both players are very good all around ballers and give their point guards plenty of support. The main difference is in the scoring, with Brown nearly doubling Hickerson’s output. This could be a danger match up for the Hawks if Brown can get loose.

Winner - Phoenix

Small Forward
Nuh Shushud vs. Marshod Anderson
18.6 points, 1.7 assists, 5.5 rebounds vs. 21.9 points, 2.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds

It seems that this Hawks outfit is a bunch of good but not great (apart from McQuay) who fit together perfectly and are having a great run in the playoffs. Shushud is a guy who can fill up the cup well and do other things good enough but he’s not a star. Marshod Anderson is a superstar and will be frothing at the mouth to get out there after being less than 100% with a sprained wrist. He’s a-ok now so expect big things from him.

Winner - Phoenix

Power Forward
Michael McQuay vs. Darryl Abrams
25.9 points, 1.3 assists, 7.6 rebounds vs. 7.9 points, 1.5 assists, 6.5 rebounds

The man, the legend. McQuay has been Atlanta’s golden sun for nearly 14 years now and he’s four wins away from taking them to the Promised Land. The Suns are scared too, as they have swapped Sam Russell for the All Defence calibre Darryl Abrams to try and slow him down. Will it succeed? For the hungry, hungry Hawks, they hope not.

Winner - Atlanta

Centre
John Meliet vs. Sam Russell
20.0 points, 1.2 assists, 6.9 rebounds vs. 9.8 points, 1.2 assists, 8.8 rebounds

John Meliet is a spitting image of Rowan Taylor, as in he is a great offensive player but his defense is atrocious. Seriously, he must be one of the worst defenders in the league. Atlanta’s average drive stop percentage (how many drives the player stops against how many total drives he faced) is 49.1% while Phoenix’s percentage is 47.1%. John Meliet’s percentage is 1.6%. He stops 0.1 drives out of 6.1 he faces on average in the playoffs. Sam Russell might have a career defining series here.

Winner - Atlanta

Bench
Jordan Williamson, Djordje Mihajlovic, Erik Morris vs. Pin-zhen Yuan, Keith Chapman, Romanos Demosthenous

Williamson is only in his second year and he has shown that he is a valuable member of this team and will be called upon to play good minutes. The rest, meh. While Phoenix’s bench have some quality bigs to throw at McQuay and Meliet.

Winner – Phoenix

Prediction – Phoenix in five. The Hawks have great chemistry and play as a team but when you have three superstars playing at the top of their games, it’s too hard.

The story was that game one and two sold out thirty minutes after we swept the Riders. That’s insane! Hey, I guess these fans are starved for a good, championship calibre team and when we are the favourites? Forget about it.

So as you could expect, the crowd was deafening. Every time we scored it was like a bomb going off as it was a sea of purple with free t-shirts being handed out that said, “The Heat is ON!”. Cheezy, yes. Awesome, also yes. Onto the game, it was up and down for the first half as Michael McQuay let rip as the Hawks led by a single point at the long break. After that however, was all ours. Marshod Anderson was fantastic with 24 points and 15 rebounds (!) as we get over McQuay’s 29 points and 8 rebounds to take the first game 109-94. Harms wasn’t sitting idly by as he finished with 26 points and 13 assists. Who surprised me the most was Pin who filled in nicely for Darryl who fouled out early with 11 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.

Phoenix leads 1-0

Game two was… easy. Too easy as we let the Hawks have a two point lead with the score of 2-0 before we hit them with an Anderson/Brown barrage to win 105-87. It wasn’t even that close as we hold them to 38% shooting. Marshod was again spectacular with 37 points and 13 rebounds while Cam had 25 points on only 9 shots which is incredible. Pin again stepped up off the bench with 19 points and 8 rebounds as again Darryl fouled out, this time in only 13 minutes. I don’t care if Darryl fouls out early because he did his job as even though Michael McQuay had 26 points and 9 rebounds he had a fight for all of them, going 10/24 from the field.

Phoenix leads 2-0

The Atlanta crowd was equally insane with scalped tickets going for so much money it even makes my head spin, and I own an NBA team. They needed this win to not only stay within arms length of us but to give them some confidence. Michael McQuay didn’t do as good as he usual goes with ‘only’ 21 points and 7 rebounds but he was helped by someone else this time, as John Meliet and Curtis Mueller adding 41 points together. The bad thing about Meliet is obviously his defense and Sam’s 20 points and 14 rebounds just proved that. He wasn’t the star though, as Cam shot early and often and made most of them for 41 points and 9 assists as we take game three 118-112 to put them on the brink of the first sweep in nine years when my old team Dallas beat my slightly younger team Brooklyn in 2032.

Phoenix leads 3-0

The Hawks are desperate. Their slogan for tonight’s game four is “we aren’t clipped yet” but their body language says otherwise. If we can get out to a quick start then this series is over. And guess what happened? We got out to a quick start. Not even 69 points from John Meliet, Michael McQuay and Nuh Shushud could slow us down as we rode 59 points and 19 assists from our starting back court to sweep the Hawks and win our first title 125-103!! What a fantastic feeling this is as it has been 73 years and the curse has lifted. A few more stats and then the celebration will kick in – Keith, Roman and Pin combined to shoot 17/21 for 37 points off the bench. OK, stats done, let’s party!

Phoenix wins 4-0

Wooooooooooooooooooooo! This may be my tenth title but it doesn’t get any less ecstatic as these guys are experiencing this for the first time, apart from Marshod. He’s the first one to give me a hug before the rest crowd around and it’s a free for all. The crowd has thinned out quite a bit as I’m sure it was a major anti-climax for a city that has been waiting longer than Phoenix has. Cameron Brown was named Finals MVP with averages of 29.3 points and 7.3 assists but of course Harms (21.3 points, 11.3 assists) and Marshod (25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds) were pretty close as well. Party!

How the Phoenix Suns overcame their drought

When the Phoenix Suns were bought by acclaimed general manager Yaxley MacMillan in 2038, the people of Arizona expected change. This was a man that not only had won nine championships under the confines of working for an owner, he was now freed of those shackles to pursue his dream of bringing a title to the starved Suns. After joining the NBA in 1968, the Suns had never won a title and MacMillan was hell bent on rectifying that.

After looking over the roster, he made drastic cuts by trading away the entire starting five for high IQ guys that play defense and a hell of a lot of first round picks. Those picks ended up to be gold, with the likes of Rich Muckle, Winston Shannon, Sam Russell and Pin-zhen Yuan and Romanos Demosthenous. Using some shrewd moves, the team freed up enough cap space to sign budding stars Arthimus Smallwood and Abel Williams.

As well as Williams played, Smallwood was a disappointment and was traded for one third of the would be big three: Cameron Brown. Brown delivered on his expectations and more. His play brought about a change in the team and the management went all in. Out were Rich Muckle, Ryan Cornell, Abel Williams and Winston Shannon, all starters for the other two thirds of the big three: Marshod Anderson and Michael Harmon. With the biggest of big threes the Suns ran roughshod over the competition, only losing three games in the playoffs to break the drought over the desert and here are the guys who made it possible.

All good things must come to an end so it’s back to work as the draft lottery takes place. In a bout of bad luck for the Pacers, Portland bounced back during the season and now Indiana only have the seventh best odds of nabbing the best pick.

16 – Orlando (0)
15 – Phoenix (-1)

Yep, we’ve dropped with New York’s pick. That means that Memphis and their miniscule 0.5% chance have jumped.

14 – Milwaukee (-1)
13 – Boston (-1)
12 – Seattle (-1)
11 – Portland (-1)
10 – Los Angeles (-1)
9 – Toronto (-1)
8 – Indiana (-1)
7 – Golden State (-1)
6 – Minnesota (-2)

New Orleans and their 9.5% chance have also jumped.

5 – Philadelphia (-3)

This lottery has it all as Nevada have jumped (stayed?) in the top three.

4 – Washington (-3)
3 – Memphis (+12)
2 – New Orleans (+3)
1 – Nevada (+2)

It’s the first time in 21 years that an expansion team has won the number one pick, with Nevada winning it in 2020 when they selected John Nemitz from Villanova.

It’s award season time and I would really love to see Harms get an award, be it DPoY or (fingers crossed) MVP.

Most Valuable Player:
Michael Harmon, Phoenix Suns
– 25.0 points, 9.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 0.5 blocks

Even though his numbers dropped a little from Indiana he is still the best player in the league. Congrats on his fourth MVP award.

Defensive Player of the Year:
Arthimus Smallwood, Houston Rockets – 18.2 points, 1.8 assists, 7.7 rebounds, 3.2 steals, 1.8 blocks

I guess he just didn’t like it here in Phoenix as he’s back to his old self, the best defender in the league.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Pete Anderson, Cleveland Cavaliers – 15.8 points, 0.9 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.3 blocks

He really should be starting but he’s backing up Steve Howard which is a tough ask.

Rookie of the Year:
Ryan Holcomb, San Diego Riders – 16.3 points, 1.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 1.2 blocks

Well, duh. No doubt.

Coach of the Year:
Gary Carlisle, Detroit Pistons – 61-21 (.744)

Not sure about this one, it should have been our own Jeremy Jones.

All NBA First Team:
Michael Harmon, Phoenix Suns

Pete Edgerson, Orlando Magic
Alan Patton, Boston Celtics
Ishmael Faye, Indiana Pacers
Jamie McMillian, Detroit Pistons

All NBA Second Team:
Axel Rancik, Oklahoma City Thunder
Nathan Gordon, Los Angeles Lakers
Juia Henchoz, Orlando Magic
Reggie Smith, New York Knicks
Rick Erickson, Miami Heat

All NBA Third Team:
Mack Haston, San Antonio Spurs
Shaun Tebbs, Portland Trailblazers
Darnell Kimbrough, Golden State Warriors
Mark Lyday, Miami Heat
Steve Howard, Cleveland Cavaliers

All Defense First Team:
Axel Rancik, Oklahoma City Thunder
Williams Shine, Detroit Pistons
Arthimus Smallwood, Houston Rockets
Ishmael Faye, Indiana Pacers
Brandon Bailey, Oklahoma City Thunder

All Defense Second Team:
Michael Harmon, Phoenix Suns

Andre Betts, Detroit Pistons
Tim King, Charlotte Bobcats
Abel Williams, Indiana Pacers
Adam Bell, Memphis Grizzlies

All Rookie First Team:
Dan Rayner, Cleveland Cavaliers
Chad Davis, Boston Celtics
Ryan Holcomb, San Diego Riders
Gavin Harvey, Orlando Magic
Sam Russell, Phoenix Suns

All Rookie Second Team:
Steven Fletcher, Toronto Raptors
Patrick Marshall, Brooklyn Nets
Santo Tommasini, Chicago Bulls
Herb Celuck, Los Angeles Lakers
Tip Rice, Golden State Warriors

Even though there are probably more talented coaches out there, I can’t drop Jeremy Jones after he just won us our first ever title. That would probably get me burned alive or something (or just left out in the desert, same same) so I offer him a five year deal and he gladly accepts. In fact, I offer all of our coaching staff extensions and they all accept. Good times!

There’s no huge superstars in the making in this draft with Brian Henry the only chance of proving me wrong, but there is a fair bit of depth here which is nice.

1 – Nevada – C Brian Henry
2 – New Orleans – PG David Pearson
3 – Memphis – PG Brian McGadney
4 – Washington – PG Nigel Kerlin
5 – Philadelphia – PF Phil Walker
6 – Minnesota – PF Joe Dixon
7 – Golden State – PG Brodney Smith
8 – Indiana – SF Damien Armstead
9 – Toronto – PG Mario Howard
10 – Los Angeles – C Petrick Rancik
11 – Portland – C Brian Forman
12 – Seattle – SF Andre Miller
13 – Boston – SG Brandon Crosby
14 – Milwaukee – SG Jabari McPherson
15 – Phoenix – PF Solomon Nichols
16 – Orlando – PG Olaf Milosz

Not bad but I don’t see three point guards going in the top four.

For the first time in a long while I haven’t needed to change anything at the draft, so don’t expect any moves from me this time.

2041 NBA Draft

1 – Nevada – C Petrick Rancik
I really don’t see this at all. Brian Henry was the top centre on the board and best player available, why take an inferior player?

2 – New Orleans – PG David Pearson
In a vacuum I don’t mind this pick as Pearson reminds me a little of Mack Haston with less passing talents. It might not have been the best pick with Henry on the board but I’ll give the Hornets a pass.

3 – Memphis – C Brian Henry
The Grizzlies are now sending Nevada and New Orleans a thank you card.

4 – Washington – PF Phil Walker
He’s a gym rat who will only get better and combine that with his above average IQ this kid just knows how to play. I really like this for the Wizards.

5 – Philadelphia – SF Andre Miller
A lot of people are going to look back at this draft and wonder why Miller was taken at ‘only’ number five. He’s 21 years old but he has the goods as he can score and defend. A real two way player and the first good selection by the Sixers in a long time.

6 – Minnesota – PF Joe Dixon
Isn’t a very good defender, not the best rebounder and can’t pass very well. Luckily he’s a decent scorer (but not excellent). I don’t like this but the experts do.

7 – Golden State – PG Brian McGadney
This isn’t the best pick for the Warriors but it isn’t the worst pick they could have made. Average but the Warriors were after a point guard.

8 – Indiana – C Brian Forman
This is a good year for centres as Forman is a decent one from Michigan State. He’s got good hands and a big body and won’t have to do all that much next year with the talent the Pacers have at the PF/C position.

9 – Toronto – PG Nigel Kerlin
The next best point guard on the board, the Raptors got this right. He’s a good shooter but that’s not all he can do like other point guards in the league. He’s a willing passer and at only 5’11” he’s still a good rebounder.

10 – Los Angeles – SF Damien Armstead
We have our first howler. Don’t get me wrong, Armstead has potential but he’s just so lazy that he’ll never get to that level. He might have a decent career but when you’re picking the the top ten you don’t want to settle for just decent.

11 – Portland – PG Mario Howard
I think the Blazers wanted Kerlin to drop so they took the next best thing. Howard is still raw at the moment which probably isn’t what Portland wants right now but if they stick with him he should turn out alright.

12 – Seattle – PF Mac Davis
A guy who can do a little of everything well but nothing exceptional. For Seattle, that might be enough but for anyone who is in the lottery and wants to get out of it, it’s a little underwhelming.

13 – Boston – SG Brandon Crosby
The definition of a streaky shooter. When he’s hot, he’s as good as anyone in the country. When he’s cold, he’s as good as my 88 year old mother. This could be a good thing or a bad thing but at least they’re going for the fences.

14 – Milwaukee – PG Jabari McPherson
I like this guy as he’s a solid point who can rebound and defend as good as he can score and pass. Others think he’s too high but I don’t mind this pick.

We’re up and I don’t have any ‘must have’ kids who stand out to me so I pick the best player who I think will fit in with this team.

15 – Phoenix – PG Olaf Milosz
He’s raw but he has spunk. I think he’ll get some minutes here and there this season (and maybe a stint in the D-League) but I can see him as a good back up point guard for Harms. The experts hate it though.

16 – Orlando – PG Brodney Smith
It’s the guy who everyone said I should take if I was looking for a PG but I seriously can’t take anyone with the first name Brodney. Otherwise, good pick.

17 – Denver – PG Charles Harris
18 – Oklahoma City – PG Josh Mitchell
19 – Miami – C Joey Peterson
20 – Portland – PF Solomon Nichols
21 – Phoenix – SG Nyah Elliot
He’s the most ready player left on the board and even though there were two other players with better potential, they’re both centres which is what I don’t want.

22 – Utah – SG Rashard Gunn
23 – Cleveland – SG Richie Williams
24 – Sacramento – PF Jayson Graves
25 – Indiana – PG Jonathan Holland
26 – Orlando – SG Fu-chi Ming
27 – Atlanta – PF Art Roberts
28 – Milwaukee – C Frank Hucks
29 – San Antonio – C Moshe Nagid
30 – Charlotte – SF Marcus Webb
31 – Detroit – SF Derrick Augustus
32 – Golden State – SF Quentin Hunter

There was only one good trade at the draft which is weird because there’s usually at least three ‘sit up and take notice’ deals.

Portland trade:
SF Patrick Blizzard

New York trade:
PG Lou Beck

Winner – Portland. The Blazers missed Beck terribly so they deal Blizzard to get him back. Too bad for the Knicks that Blizzard is 33 years old and no where near as good as Beck and is still owed $30 million over the next two years.

With such a set team I renounce only a few and keep the rights to most of the others. So say goodbye to Brad King, Russell Haymon, Jeff Seabrooks, Bernard Polite and Chris Cage and (hopefully) stay with Josh Mayes, Keith Chapman and Du Yip.

As summer league rolls around it’s weird to see Roman being eligible to play as it’s his third year. Oh well, he could use a bit of court time. Olaf (Milosz), Nyah (Elliot), Pin, Sam and Eddie (Grace, second round pick who I might keep around) are also invited.

What’s disappointing is that even with this talent we go down to Chicago 115-100 after Roman goes ice cold, shooting 6/20 for 13 points. Pin and Sam didn’t do much either as it was our bench of guys I’ll never sign who did well with Eddie Carter, Sean Logan or Chris Hobbs had 38 points. Santo Tommasini was fantastic with 23 points and 6 rebounds for the Bulls.

Next up is another loss, but this one is acceptable. Roman was a man possessed with 32 points and 5 rebounds while Sam had 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks so I don’t really care that we lost to Utah 109-10. It was because of LeRoy Lee (yep, that’s his name) who had a monster game with 35 points, 10 rebounds and 5 steals.

Pin and Eddie have their best games with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 19 points respectively as we finally win one, beating the Heat 116-112. We have eight players in double figures which is always nice to see from the guy who won’t probably get signed. Ugh, bad English. Dario Lima had 23 points and 9 rebounds for Miami as he looks like he could be a decent back up for Rick Erickson.

It was Olaf’s turn to bring the noise as we shoot 61% to beat the Wolves 116-88. Our rookie point guard had 10 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in only 22 minutes as Pin led us with 18 points and 9 rebounds. The Pups had no answer for us with Ryan Drexler being the best of a bad bunch with 16 points.

We were put back in our place with a 114-99 drubbing by the Spurs as Moshe Nagid, who everyone thought would go in the top ten but fell to pick 29, showed the doubters wrong with 18 points in 20 minutes. Maybe he’ll be something in this league. Eddie Carter had 20 points on 9/10 shooting for us.

At over $13 million above the salary cap I’m not in the market to splurge on a free agent so it’ll be bench players who fill a need, not someone on a bargain. Here are the top ten free agents and it’s a doozy –

PG Mack Haston*
SG Daniel Brazzle*
PF Michael McQuay
SG Nathan Gordon*
SG RT Adams
SF Darnell Kimbrough
PF Mark Lyday
C John Meliet*
SF Ben LaLane*
PF Chri Morrison*

And that’s not including guys like Shaun Tebbs and DJ Forbes.

After only two days the Lakers re-sign Nathan Gordon to the max in a deal that everyone saw coming.

That was it for a while until about a week later when Atlanta re-signed John Meliet to too much money for my liking but that’s just because I don’t like him as a player.

Surprising news and unsurprising news. First up, Mack Haston goes back to San Antonio with no-one even lifting their eyes from their news screen it was so unsurprising. What did shock some people was Jack Dawkins going to Milwaukee for a one year deal. I guess he’s at that stage where he’ll take whatever he can get.

RT Adams, Daniel Brazzle, Michael McQuay an Ben LaLane all go back to their respective teams and it was stupid of me to think that with so much talent here there might be some movement but I guess I was wrong.

DJ Forbes, Darnell Kimbrough and Mark Lyday all re-sign and I’m going to bed. Not quite as I offer Buck Mason a three year, MLE contract which I’m sure he won’t sign but it’s worth having a go.

Nope, as he takes the tender offer and goes back to New Orleans for another year, as does most of the rest of the talent available. Yawn.

I offer Bernard Polite, Josh Louis, Tarrell Gate and Jason Collins minimum contracts and all but Collins take the deal. Don’t worry, I’ll get him.

The Spurs get more dangerous by signing Gustavo Fonseca for a cheap, MLE deal while Dallas takes a punt on Shaun Tebbs for the same price. There’s still some good talent out there if anyone wants it. I sign Jason Collins and Keith Chapman to minimum deals which makes 15 players on the squad so I’m done.

In one of the steals of this free agency or even any free agency, Washington signs Kurt Lewis to a 2 year, $5 million contract. Yep, the 28 year old Lewis who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds a game last season. Sure he had that run in with the police when he hit his wife (which is horrible, don’t get me wrong) but his on the court performance is worth more than that. I’ve heard that the first thing the Wizards did was put Lewis into mandatory therapy sessions to work out his rage issues. Let’s hope for the best that he can turn things around.

To all you Rookie Six fans out there you will be happy to learn that another one got a contract as Kenneth Long suits up next to Jack Dawkins in Milwaukee for a one year deal. Unfortunately, Art Stevenson, Chris Jones and Terry McKenzie are still waiting for the call.

Training camp comes and goes and it’s all positive. Olaf has improved but will still spend the season in the D-League, Nyah is a horrible defender which just isn’t want I want so he’ll get sent down as well while Pin and Sam will be our starting front court which I like a lot.

What’s annoying is that we’re not ranked number one in the West!

Western Conference Pre-Season Standings
1 – Utah Jazz
2 – Phoenix Suns
3 – Oklahoma City Thunder
4 – San Antonio Spurs
5 – Sacramento Kings
Last – Milwaukee Bucks

I don’t have a problem with the five teams in this top five but I could see Houston slip in if they play well. The Bucks shouldn’t be last with all the talent they have.

Eastern Conference Pre-Season Standings
1 – Charlotte Bobcats
2 – Toronto Raptors
3 – Indiana Pacers
4 – New York Knicks
5 – Atlanta Hawks
Last – Washington Wizards

The East have got really deep all of a sudden as any of the top three teams are right up with us. No way should the Knicks be in the top five but I guess someone is biased.

Pre-Season All NBA First Team:
Michael Harmon, Phoenix Suns
Cameron Brown, Phoenix Suns
Marshod Anderson, Phoenix Suns

Ishmael Faye, Indiana Pacers
BJ Watson, Toronto Raptors

Pre-Season All NBA Second Team:
Gamal Hicks, Utah Jazz
Nathan Gordon, Los Angeles Lakers
James Carroll, Houston Rockets
Zan Tepavac, Oklahoma City Thunder
Adam Bell, Memphis Grizzlies

Pre-Season All NBA Third Team:
Mack Haston, San Antonio Spurs
Daniel Brazzle, Toronto Raptors
Juia Henchoz, Orlando Magic
Reggie Smith, New York Knicks
Steve Howard, Cleveland Cavaliers

The last time I had three players in the first team was in Brooklyn with Cort Majishun, Kenneth Long and Tiburcio Tommasini. No pressure guys.

Here we go, time for our 2041-2042 “Back to Back” Phoenix Suns –

PG – Michael Harmon
SG – Cameron Brown
SF – Marshod Anderson
PF – Sam Russell
C – Pin-zhen Yuan
6th – Darryl Abrams
7th – Jason Collins
8th – Tarrell Gates
9th – Keith Chapman
10th – Romanos Demosthenous
11th – Josh Louis
12th – Bernard Polite
D-League – Olaf Milosz
D-League – Nyah Elliot
D-League – Eddie Grace
