Waking up in Toronto

Waking up in Toronto

Postby IWWROCKS » Sat Jul 28, 2012 4:25 am

I just had the most amazing dream!

I was GM of the Brooklyn Nets. I managed to sign Dwight Howard and Blake Griffin...I drafted an amazing shooting guard called Francesco Ravanelli. We were top of our division, just going into the playoffs for the first time with me as GM and under the Brooklyn name. Then my alarm went off...

I wake up to reality. I am General Manager of the Toronto Raptors... :(

First Day

I'm sat down with my sweaty nervous assistant Raymond. Everytime I look at him I cant help but think we've just hired the first high school drop out we could find. He gives me a 5 page document on the team, current players and some notes from the previous GM about this years draft. 5 Pages? really?

Point Guards

Jose Calderon - A decent option but never going to be a team leader. On a 10mil contract which thankfully ends after the upcoming season. If he still wants that amount he can go elsewhere to get it.

Shooting Guards

Demar Derozan - I'm a Demar Derozan fan. I think opinion on him is split but i'm certainly willing to give him time to shine as I beleive he can. The problem we have with Demar is he isn't going to defend a whole lot. Which makes our backcourt a defensive liability.

Small Forwards

Linas Kleiza - Yeah...umm...this guy might be here for the season only because we have no one else. Not a fan and can't see him adding a whole lot to our team.

Power Forwards

Amir Johnson - A good defensive presence on a team with little of it. Can put up some points but never going to dominate. Being paid a bit too much for my liking and at a position we have plenty of people in. I'll write his name in pencil for now.

Andrea Bargnani - Get this man off my team. Get this contract off my team. Yes he can score, and maybe our best scoring option, but jesus he's not Carmelo Anthony! He should not be paid this much.

James Johnson - A good backup I think. Worth keeping around as I feel he definately offers something from the bench. Plus he's not being paid 10 MILLION FREAKIN DOLLARS!

Ed Davis - A young player who maybe wont progress quite as much as people thought. The notes I have on him say he'll never be a starter. I may keep him around though. He's on a rookie contract, can board and from what I hear has very good discipline. Much needed for someone hanging around the rim.

Centers

Jonas Valanciunas - The biggest bright spark on the team. He can score for sure. We need to look at how he rebounds at this level though and his defense will be a question but only time will tell.

Owner Call

Wow. This guy is seriously telling me I need to make the playoffs?!? Do they play practical jokes on the new guy or something? Oh and he wants it under the cap too. Might aswell fire me now man. This will be a tough year.

Pre-Draft

Here we go, my first bit of work. I'm going to keep the coaches around. I'll give them a chance to prove their worth to me.

The Mock Draft has us taking Damien Lillard the PG our of Weber State. We'll see how the draft goes. Everyone on the roster is available for the right price as far as im concerned and if moving up the draft makes sense i'll definately look to do it.

Rookie Workouts

Anthony Davis - PF
Bradley Beal - SG
Andre Drummond - C
Perry Jones III - SF
Michal Kidd-Gilchrist - SF
Meyers Leonard - C
Arnette Moultrie - PF
Austin Rivers - SG
Thomas Robinson - PF
Jared Sullinger - PF
Dion Waiters - SG
Harrison Barnes - SF
Damien Lillard - PG
Tyler Zeller - C
Fab Melo - C

Image

1 - New Orleans - Anthony Davis (PF)
2 - Charlotte - Michal Kidd-Gilchrist (SF)
3 - Washington - Thomas Robinson (PF)
4 - Cleveland - Bradley Beal (SG)
5 - Sacramento - John Henson (PF) - really?!
6 - Portland - Andre Drummond (C)
7 - Golden State - Harrison Barnes (SF)
8 - Toronto - Dion Waiters (SG)

This was a tough one. As I have said i'm a big Demar Derozan fan. I could of taken Perry Jones III to fill the SF role we need, but Waiters was the best player available and I felt he can add a bit more. Most of all he gives our back court some defence. Something we were in dire need of.

9 - Detroit - Meyers Leonard (C)
10 - New Orleans - Terrence Jones (SG)
11 - Portland - Damian Lillard (PG)
12 - Houston - Perry Jones III (SF)
13 - Phoenix - Austin Rivers (SG)
14 - Milwaukee - Kendall Marshall (PG)
15 - Philadelphia - Jared Sullinger (PF)
16 - Houston - Terence Ross (SG)

MAJOR TRADE

I can't quite beleive it. I realise his contract is huge...bigger than Bargnani...BUT...He's baaaaaaackk

MIA Get: Andrea Bargnani (PF), Amir Johnson (PF)
TOR Get: Chris Bosh (PF)

Miami will likely play Bargnani at center, a position they needed and stick Amir in at PF which is a bit of a downgrade but probably makes them a better all around team. It gives us back a superstar. I did phone Chris before I made the trade and he told me he'd be happy to come back. He got his ring but missed being the star of a franchise. He will most certainly be here.

17 - Dallas - Tyler Zeller (C)
18 - Houston - Jeremy Lamb (SG)
19 - Orlando - Arnette Moultrie (PF)
20 - Denver - Royce White (SF)
21 - Boston - Fab Melo (C)
22 - Boston - Moe Harkless (SF)
23 - Atlanta - Andrew Nicholson (PF)
24 - Cleveland - Quincy Miller (SF)
25 - Memphis - Marquis Teague (PG)
26 - Indiana - Tony Wotton (PG)
27 - Miami - JaMychal Green (PF) - Doesnt make a load of sense considering the trade!!
28 - Oklahoma - Furkan Aldemir (PF)
29 - Chicago - Drew Gordon (PF)
30 - Golden State - Quincy Acy (PF)

37 - Toronto - Festus Ezeli (C)

The best player available and can serve backup to Jonas or possibly even go out to Europe for a bit as Jonas did. I'm happy with the draft, very happy with the trade. Let's go!

Contract Decisions

I have decided to retain the rights to Festus Ezeli but not sign him at this stage. I'd be keen for him to go to Europe or the D-League and improve his skills.

I excercise rookie options for both Ed Davis and James Johnson although more than likely one of them will be traded away at some point. With Bosh around, I only need 1 young backup PF.

I've renounced all contract expirys.

Summer League

Roster

We are able to take a lot of players to the Summer league which is fantastic. An early oppurtunity for the team to mesh can't be passed up.

SG - DeMar Derozan
SG - Dion Waiters
PF - James Johnson
PF - Ed Davis
C - Jonas Valanciunas

PG - Sundiata Gaines
SF - Chris Douglas Roberts
SF - Tyler Honeycutt
C - Hasheem Thabeet
PG - Tyreese White
SF - Jeff Allen

@ Cavaliers - W 103-93

Player of Game: James Johnson - 12 Pts, 2 Ast, 8 Reb, 2 Blk, 5 Stl

Vs. New Orleans - L 100-88

TOR Player of Game: Dion Waiters - 15 Pts, 1 Ast, 3 Reb, 4 Stl

@ Suns - W 100-83

Player of Game: DeMar Derozan - 22 Pts, 1 Ast, 7 Reb, 1 Stl

Vs. Wizards - W 93-100

Player of Game: James Johnson - 14 Pts, 1 Ast, 6 Reb, 1 Blk, 2 Stl

@ Jazz - L 89-97

Player of Game: Jonas Valanciunas - 14 Pts, 1 Ast, 9 Reb, 4 Blk, 1 Stl

GM Notes

A decent 3-2 record in Summer League has me somewhat optimistic going into the season. None of the invitees particularly impressed me so i'm not sure i'll be looking to sign them come free agency. James Johnson was the standout for me, and may have propelled himself ahead of Ed Davis. Of course at the moment we don't really have a starting SF and I know Coach Casey has toyed with the idea of playing him there.

Free Agency

I desperately need a starting SF but there isn't a whole lot out there. I also have my eye on a particular Canadian PG...if I can get him, that would be a big boost. I'm going to ignore the GM's cries of staying under the CAP. It's a dangerous game but if we are to try and make the playoffs it needs to be done.

Day 1 - 5

No Activity

Day 6

San Antonio re-signs Tim Duncan on a 1 Year/13.5mil deal

L.A Clippers sign Grant Hill to a 1 Year/3mil deal

L.A Clippers re-sign Nick Young to a 3 year/22.5mil deal

Day 7

Cleveland sign Kevin Garnett to a 1 year/15.3mil deal

Golden State re-sign Brandon Rush to a 3 year/20.3mil deal

Day 8

Utah signs Vince Carter to a 1 year/5mil deal

Day 9

Brooklyn re-signs Deron Williams to a 5 year/77.3mil deal

Indiana re-signs Roy Hibber to a 5 year/60.3mil deal

Day 10

Houston sign Goran Dragic to a 4 year/32mil deal

Brooklyn sign Jamal Crawford to a 3 year/25mil deal

New York re-sign J.R Smith to a 4 year/20mil deal

Day 11

Milwaukee re-signs Eryan Ilyasova to a 5 year/54mil deal

Toronto signs Andrei Kirilenko to a 4 year/42.5mil deal

Dallas signs Eric Gordon to a 4 year/51.4mil deal

Being a European myself, I am a massive fan of Andrei. It fills that slot and he's still only 31. He's got alot left to give. I am very excited about this deal. Also the last year of the contract is a team option so if after 3 years things aren't working out we can cut our ties.

Day 12

Philadelphia re-sign Spencar Hawes to a 5 year/49.4mil deal

Sacremento Kings sign Nicolas Batum to a 4 year/45.2mil deal

L.A Lakers re-sign Ramon Sessions to a 3 year/21.7mil deal

Phoenix sign O.J Mayo to a 4 year/34.9mil deal

Utah sign Jason Kidd to a 1 year/1.2mil deal

Day 13

No Acitivity

Day 14

Boston sign Brook Lopez to a 4 year/40.3mil deal

Houston sign Kris Humphries to a 4 year/39.7mil deal

Phoenix signs Chris Kaman to a 4 year/24.8mil deal

Toronto sign Cartier Martin to a 1 year/826k deal

Just a body to fill out the roster. Cartier can come off the bench and offer a bit, but I dont expect much.

Day 15

Boston sign Ryan Anderson to a 4 year/42mil deal

L.A. Lakers sign Steve Nash to a 1 year/3mil deal (noooo!!)

Portland sign Jeremy Lin to a 4 year/37.1mil deal

Losing out on Nash was a big blow. It turned out he just didnt want to come to Canada it seems. I can't blame him. He wants a title now. He turned down a 2 year/5mil deal. So over the contract he would of got more money but obviously that wasn't his ambition. There isnt alot of affordable talent out there now so we may have to look to another older star...one that has been away from the league a while...

Day 16

New Orleans sign Javale McGee to a 4 year/31mil deal

Toronto sign Allen Iverson to a 1 year/1.2mil deal

There we go. AI will improve the defensive liabilities of the back court. We now have an offensive backcourt duo and a defensive one. So I'm happy. Obviously Nash's distribution can't be matched and it's a massive blow and no one out there came close.

Day 17

Toronto sign Ben Wallace to a 1 year/1.2mil deal

That completes our activity. Ben will play backup C behind Jonas. Not much else to say about that. We're ready for the season now.

Day 18-19

No Activity

Opening Day Roster

PG - Jose Calderon
SG - DeMar Derozan
SF - Andrei Kirilenko
PF - Chris Bosh
C - Jonas Valanciunas
6 - James Johnson
7 - Linas Kleiza
8 - Ed Davis

GM Notes

A Solid start to the month but came apart at the end. Bench just isnt capable of picking the game up when our starters aren't doing it. I should apologise to Kleiza because to be fair to him he seems like the only guy on the bench trying. We've lost James Johnson for the rest of the seasn after he blew a knee tendont against the Suns. It's going to be a tough long season and I could be in trouble at the end of it.

GM Notes

The obvious place to start is our aquisition for Marcin Gortat. One of our worst areas has been rebounding and he is an obvious improvement there. His one issue seems to be discipline as he gets in foul trouble easily but with Jonas on the bench that's a risk worth taking. He slots straight into the starting line up and managed to get player of the game in his first match.

Going the other way is James Johnson. He is out for the season and is never going to get ahead of Bosh when he's back so i'm comfortable with that. We also gain a 1st round pick from Phoenix for this season. The benefit of sending Johnson is he can not help them this year, so actually that pick we receive becomes even more valuable as they have lost a key starter with nothing to improve them now.

We do give up 3 2nd round picks but I do not value 2nd round picks at all. I am very happy and I think our month record shows why. It's been a much better month, especially since Marcin arrived.

GM Notes

We had a tough stretch in the middle of the month but i'm still seing an improvement over the first half of the season. Sometimes we struggle to score but that will come. We are definately rebounding better and perhaps crucially we are 2nd best in not turning the ball over. Our conference is still a very tight one and playoffs are not out of the question.
