Sitting at #2 on the board, we were hoping that the Magic made a huge blunder and passed up on Andrew Wiggins with the first pick, but not even Orlando could screw that one up. We settle for the next best prospect in the class: Jabari Parker. He will give us a true PF to play in the post and to give us an already established rebounder off the bench. He will give us a post scorer that our bench lacked sorely last season.
With our second pick in the first round at #7, we were just going with best player available unless a trade came through worth taking. There weren't any deals that suited to our liking, so we took another point guard, this time Marcus Smart out of Oklahoma State. Yes, we have Mike Conley and yes, we have Trey Burke, but we don't have much depth at all in our guard rotation and Smart can play both the point and shooting guard spots. He and Burke off the bench could be lethal!
We engaged in two different trades throughout this draft, both of which were with the Indiana Pacers. The first one came towards the end of the lottery when the Pacers inquired about the availability of Lamar Odom. Since we had drafted Jabari Parker to play PF off the bench, Odom and his $2m contract were expendable. We sent him to Indiana in return for the #52 pick in the draft, where we selected Doug McDermott out of Creighton. McDermott is a three-point specialist for us and will spend some time in the D-League for us.
Our second trade came when we were on the clock at #24. We didn't have a need to add another rookie to our roster and the Pacers came calling again. Trade talks had been fruitful already, so why not extend the love fest some more? They offered their first next year for the #24 pick and we gladly accepted as they selected Fuquan Edwin, a SF out of Seton Hall. Worked out for both teams.
