Rockets Left to Fill Void Left by Morey

June 29, 2012

Houston, TX – Daryl Morey, just one day after the 2012 NBA Draft, has stepped down as the GM of the Houston Rockets. When asked for the reasoning behind his decision, he was quoted as saying his “heart just wasn’t in to it anymore”.

The team owner, Larry Marble, was left with a void to fill at the ever important position of general manager. Marble has always been known to be a very patient man when it came to performance. NBA insiders had speculated that with that patience we could see a younger candidate brought in to grow with the young core already intact on this team’s roster.

Insert Kris Eisley.

Eisley, a 34-year old from Stillwater, OK, had been running the Tulsa Tejanos of the NBA Development League the past four seasons. He was known for his ability to acquire and develop young talent in the NBADL, ending with two championship appearances including one league title. He was known as one of the hottest, young managers in the game and hopes to bring a title to the Houston Rockets.

Kris Eisley shows up to Houston with a full roster of 15 players. Unfortunately, 13 of the 15 players on the roster are still under contract for two or more years. Roster flexibility is two years away, unless he can pull off a major trade. With the bad comes the good as they are still $13 million under the cap at the moment. And with that good comes the bad as James Harden’s salary goes up by $9.2 million next season when his extension kicks in.

With tons of young talent and (potentially) plenty of salary cap space in just two years, Eisley has a chance to make an instant impact in Houston. With the season just under a month away, he’s got some decisions to make. He could attempt to shuffle up the roster, possibly moving a couple young pieces for a veteran or he could choose to keep all the young players and try to groom them in the NBADL. Expect decisions to be made in the very near future.

Kris Eisley is now in the big leagues and he’s got the eyes of the billion dollar industry on him.

2012-2013 Roster Preview

As discussed before, Coach Eisley has a full roster. Most teams have a roster spot or two available to make a last minute pickup heading into the season or leave it open for a midseason acquisition via sign or trade. Unless the Rockets decide to cut somebody, this roster is intact. Let’s take a look at what Kris has got to work with.

Point Guard

Jeremy Lin – 24 – The Linsanity era in New York ended as fast as it began with the Rockets signing him to a 3-year, $25 million deal that the Knicks could not match. Lin can score in bunches as well as get teammates involved. He can be a bit turnover prone as his handles are not up to par with his passing ability. Being a Harvard graduate, he’s got the intelligence to run any system on offense and defense. He will be the Rockets’ starter for the length of his contract.

Toney Douglas – 26 – Another former Knick, Douglas doesn’t bring much to the table as a point guard. He can score a bucket or two off the bench, but his $2 million expiring contract is the most attractive part of his game at this point. He will be on the trade block immediately.

Scott Machado – 22 – Signed to a 3-year rookie deal by former GM Daryl Morey, Machado bring a great outside shot and is a capable backup point guard. His offensive skills are par for the course for a backup, but his defense leaves much to be desired. An upgrade here would be welcomed in Houston.

Shooting Guard

James Harden – 22 – Before leaving, Morey swung for the fences and acquired a star in the making in James Harden. He is an offensive juggernaut that loves to get to the rim and earn some easy points at the line. He’s a two-way player that can be a pest on the defensive end as well. He is the heart and soul of this team and will be for the foreseeable future.

Daequan Cook – 25 – Cook was a tremendous shooter at Ohio State, but that one skill he had hasn’t translated well into the NBA. He will be better used as trade fodder with a $3 million expiring deal.

Small Forward

Chandler Parsons – 23 – Parsons was a 2nd round pick a year ago and has shown flashes to be a steal. He does a little bit of everything and reminds some of a young Shawn Marion. He is signed on for three more seasons, all for under $1 million, and won’t be going anywhere unless he leaves via free agency.

Carlos Delfino – 30 – The elder statesmen of the team, Delfino brings a long-range scorer to a roster that is devoid of three-point shooters. He’s a decent rebounder for his position, but at times can get caught gambling on defense. He will be a good veteran to have around.

Terrence Jones – 20 – A first round pick this year, Jones is seen as a man without a position. He’s too slow to play the three but too small to play the four. He can do a little bit of everything, but no one skill is even above average for the NBA. He could have a short-lived career in Houston.

Royce White – 20 – The most intriguing non-lottery pick in quite some time. Royce White has all the skills to be a very good player. Some experts say on his skill set alone he should have been a top-5 pick. Unfortunately for White, he is battling some anxiety issues that at times could force him to miss games due to fear of traveling. As a player, White is considered a point-forward at times as he is a gifted passer for a player his size. The small forward position is crowded, but if Coach McHale can figure a way to utilize his unique skill set, he could carve out a niche in the rotation.

[Editor’s Note: There will be Royce Rules in place, determining eligibility to play each and every game. These rules will be discussed in the next post.]

Marcus Morris – 22 – A first round pick just a couple years ago, Morris has proven that he does not belong in the NBA. He will be gone very soon.

Power Forward

Patrick Patterson – 24 – Patterson is an undersized jump-shooting power forward, but plays with a bunch of energy and can help some on the glass and on the defensive end. A stretch four is useful with this team, but I would rather see a more traditional four on the roster.

Donatas Motiejunas – 22 – The Lithuanian has finally come overseas and making the leap to the NBA. He’s got some growing to do in all aspects of his game. If he shows improvement, he could stick around. If not, look for him to be moved as Eisley pursues a more polished big man.

Greg Smith – 21 – Undrafted and signed to a two-year deal, Smith is a project in every sense of the word. He is a bit undersized and not as athletic as you would like, so he may struggle to find minutes in the rotation.

Center

Omer Asik – 26 – Fresh off a three-year, $25 million contract, Asik will be the starter at center. He brings inside scoring as well as a legitimate rebounder, shot blocker and interior defender. He will be the rock on the inside for the Rockets, but will almost certainly need some help as well.

Cole Aldrich – 24 – The former lottery pick has not lived up to the billing. He is now seen as just big defender that won’t last long in Houston once Kris Eisley can find a better backup center. Unfortunately, he has a 2nd year on his contract so Houston may need to find a trade partner.

The average age of this roster as currently compiled is 23.4 years of age. Now we haven’t done the math, but that’s got to be the youngest roster in the league. With a young roster, most people would think it is rebuilding time, but the core is intact and ready to be a playoff team now. They may be on the fringe, around 7th to 10th in the West, but help should be on the way within the next season or two.

Lin, Harden and Jones are going to develop into a pretty sick lineup, I think. You really do have a pretty good roster already.

Lin and Harden I'm excited about, but I can't say the same about Jones. I think he has very limited potential and could struggle against even legit NBA backups. I hope I'm wrong but that's my first impression of seeing his ratings.

The Royce Rules

Image

“And with the 16th pick of the 2012 NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets select…forward Royce White from Iowa State University!”

And with that pick, the Rockets had added one of the most enigmatic basketball prospects the league has seen since the player formerly known as Ron Artest. White was as skilled a player in the entire draft but came with his own warts as a prospect.

Royce signed with the Minnesota Gophers, staying as close to home as possible. After some legal issues, he decided he no longer wanted to be a Gopher and transferred to Iowa State. After sitting out an entire year for eligibility reasons, he became a star for the Cyclones. He led the team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks as he played a point-forward position for Coach Fred Hoiberg.

So a player with that immense talent should be a top-5 pick, right? Wrong.

He had a well-known bout with an anxiety disorder. He was frightened by flying. Iowa State accommodated it as well as they could, but in the NBA, flying is the only way teams travel. Which team would be willing to look past not only some legal troubles but a fear of flying and take a chance on White?

Former Rockets GM Daryl Morey had put together a contract for Royce White before the draft. Royce White had some very specific details in which he needed in order to be a part of the organization. Morey, who was enamored with White, obliged on all of them, sticking new general manager Kris Eisley with what are dubbed “The Royce Rules” in which he had to follow.

First off, Royce White is not allowed to be assigned to the development league. He needs to stay with the Rockets trainers, team doctors and teammates in a controlled environment with a rigid schedule to keep consistency in his life.

The second rule was before all Rocket road trips, he would consult with both his personal and team doctors and psychiatrists in order to determine if he was in a mental state to travel with the team. If he was deemed to not be ok to fly, he would stay back at home in Houston. Any game played in the state of Texas (San Antonio or Dallas or expansion team) Royce would either fly with the team or drive to the game on a personal charter bus that he will fund.

There you have it, The Royce Rules. Kris Eisley must abide by them or the Rockets could get sued for breach of contract. Morey is to blame, but he can wipe his hands clean of the whole situation now that he is gone.

----------------------------------

While playing PB3, I will be sure to not assign Royce White to the NBADL. That should be pretty easy to handle. The second rule is a bit different. I’m going to give Royce White my own rating called “Mental Health”. He will start with a rating of 45 out of 100. Before every road trip, be it one game or many, I will use a random number generator. If the number displayed is between 1-45, Royce will make the trip. If it is between 46-100, he stays home and doesn’t play. If he does not make the trip with the Rockets, I’ll edit the depth chart and rotations to eliminate him from playing in the game.

At the end of each month, I will re-calculate his Mental Health rating. He gets a +1 for every road trip he does make and a -1 for every trip he misses. If he hits a bad stretch, it could cost him his career as his anxiety disorder will hinder him from competing on a regular basis.

D-League Assignments

Postby Rizzo » Sun Jun 02, 2013 1:27 pm

October 4, 2012

Houston, TX - Time for the NBADL assignments to be handed out to young players across the league. The Rockets had plenty of options to choose from (one of which was not Royce White thanks to his contract). In the end, they decided to send first year forward Terrence Jones and fellow small forward Marcus Morris to the development league.

The small forward position is crowded here in Houston. Chandler Parsons is the starter until injury or trade derails him. Carlos Delfino is the elder statesmen and can bring some leadership to the team. Royce White, again, is not eligible for D-league play.

Terrence Jones, as a rookie, needs to show he's ready to contribute down there before he plays up here. With the current crop of forwards on this team, there may not be any room from him on this roster for the long haul. Eisley could attempt to move him for a future pick or an upgrade at another position.

Marcus Morris has proven he's not an NBA caliber player and has no future in Houston.

Scott Machado was another option, but Coach McHale not being comfortable with Toney Douglas as the backup point guard, Machado will get a chance to play spot minutes.

Donatas Motiejunas is young and raw, but his height and length could allow him to play defense for this team in a pinch. If he ends up playing no minutes, then a move to the NBADL could be in place.

The Royce Rules sounds freaking awesome and complicated. I'm very interested if he will stick around or fade away into obscurity like he has in real life.

Thanks. I saw it as a way to add a little twist to the game (not that the game needs any to be amazing). I'm very interested/nervous/anxious to see how his career pans out too. Hopefully the season gets underway tomorrow.
