Blast to the 'Ship - A Houston Rockets Story

Today, Kris Eisley had some contract decisions to make. The first, and easiest, were to renounce the rights to Jerome Randle, Ahmad Nivins and Stanley Robinson. Randle was our 3rd PG last season, but with Marcus Smart in the fold, his services were no longer needed. Nivins and Robinson were picked up just for the last week or two of the season to rest the regulars, so no need to bring them back.

The next decision to make was on Patrick Patterson. Playing the same exact minutes the last two seasons, his points and rebounds have declined and we believe he has reached his ceiling. His qualifying offer is for $6.2m. Since we are already $4m over the cap, we are going to decline his option and allow him to become an unrestricted free agent. The growth of Nerlens Noel and Cody Zeller make this decision a little easier as well as the arrival of the #2 pick Jabari Parker. Renouncing his rights gets us $2m under the cap.

Next up is the contract of Mickael Pietrus. He has a cap hold of $1.457m. After becoming the Kevin Durant stopper in the playoffs last season, we think it would behoove us to keep him around one more season if possible. If we find something better on the open market, we can always renounce his rights at that time.

Last, but not least, we pick up five rookie options. For Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller and Trey Burke, we pick up their 4th year rookie options while for Marcus Smart and Jabari Parker it is their 3rd year options. Combined, they will be making about $17m during the 2016-2017 season, which will likely be peanuts compared to what they are really worth. No-brainer for Mr. Eisley.

It is time for the summer league and we unveiled our roster before the first game. We have six of our own players on the team: Trey Burke, Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller, Jabari Parker, Marcus Smart and Doug McDermott. We invited a few known names to play with us: Anthony Bennett, Ricky Ledo, Paulo Prestes, Tony Snell, Kyle Wiltjer and Jon Diebler.

July 11, 2013

Houston Rockets vs. Los Angeles Clippers

Rockets – 110
Jabari Parker – 18 PTS, 12 REB
Marcus Smart – 18 PTS, 5 REB, 2 AST
Ricardo Ledo – 15 PTS 6 AST
Trey Burke – 14 PTS, 3 AST, 2 STL
Cody Zeller – 10 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK
Nerlens Noel – 6 PTS, 11 REB, 3 BLK

July 13, 2014

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Houston Rockets

Cavaliers – 113
Tristan Thompson – 21 PTS, 14 REB, 4 BLK
Wayne Selden – 17 PTS, 3 AST
Darius Miller – 15 PTS

Rockets – 115
Trey Burke – 40 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK
Jabari Parker – 16 PTS, 4 REB, 1 BLK
Nerlens Noel – 14 PTS, 6 REB, 3 BLK
Marcus Smart – 11 PTS, 2 AST
Cody Zeller – 8 PTS, 10 REB

An undefeated summer league performance was exactly what we expected from the team. There was just too much talent on our roster, especially in our starters, to not run the table. Trey Burke showed he can score in bunches while Jabari Parker was a very effective and efficient scorer. Marcus Smart played pretty well, but I don’t think his game meshes very well with Trey Burke’s ball-dominant style. Could be something to keep an eye on.

I was unemployed for a long time so getting through a post a day broke up the day in between job hunting. I've got one now so I'll be posting less in the future so you better keep it up! What's Wiggins looking like?

Sorry for the (very) late response. Guess you could say I was on bit of a hiatus. Here is Andrew Wiggins' game log from Summer League:

Safe to say he's going to be a BEAST!
