“We was ranked #7 in the firs’ poll.

“5 guys on the Norton Lis’.

“3 open slots. Lookin’ at 10 recruits an’ they all interested.

“Got all 3 recruits, #1, 4, 5, 2 bigs an’ an SG. Tough scheduel agin, startin’ with the NIT. Practic’ly all ranked teams.

“#7 ranked, picked #4 in confernce. Yep, #1, 2, 3 in the country all in our conference.

“Exhibitions didn’t change much. I got 6 hosses an’ #7-10 ain’t bad!

“We los’ by 3 ta Maryland in the NIT semis.

8-3 fer the preconfernce scheduel. Won our las’ 5. Ranked #9, RPI #1.

“Crushed #1 Syracuse. 16-4, 8-1 halfway through. 3 way tie fer 1st, ranked #6, RPI #3. We got three tough road games comin’ up though.

23-6, 15-3, in a 3 way tie fer 2nd, goin’ ta the tourmanent. 4th seed though. Ranked #6, RPI #4.

“All kinds a upsets in the tourmanent. We played #2 North Carolina fer the title. Olin was hurt but Jake was almos’ as good an’ he took Olin’s spot. They beat us.

“We was #2 in the midwes’ but North Carolina was #1.

“We got ta the Sweet Sixteen easy, even with a couple a injuries. It was #9 ranked, #3 seed Stanford. We beat ‘em but North Carolina in the Elite Eight. Nope, couldn't beat 'em.

“Still not quite good enough. We ain’t losin’ nobody what matters this year an’ we got three real hosses comin’ in. Hopefully nex’ year.

“Like always we went ta the final four. Ohio State beat North Carolina fer the title.

Awards: Ben Olin made 1st team, Mike Hess made 2nd.

I axed fer a facilities upgrade. Got it! Up from B ta A-.

“Team Prestige is up ta 90. After 18 years as a head coach I’m at 451-155, .744. Reputation is 89.

“Hopin’ ta finely git that title nex’ year.”

“We’ll find out after this…”

(September 20 Continued)

Preseason ranked #2 in one poll #3 in the other. North Carolina an’ Syracuse is the ones up there with us.

“Nuthin’ in the transfer pool.

“We need guards so I’m lookin’ for them in the recruit pool.

“Got all 5 recruits we was chasin'. Tough scheduel startin’ with the Coaches Classic. We’re takin’ on all comers!

“Exhibitions didn’t change much. I think we’re ready!

Met North Carolina, #1 seed, in the 3rd roun’ a the Classic an’ they smoked us, 66-80. PG Jay Tuck played on’y 21 minutes afore foulin’ out. Not happy. Our reboundin’ is amazin’ though, avergin’ 56.0 fer the first 3 games. Keep workin’ I guess.

“All 5 recruits sign, #1, 2, 4, 5, 11.

We en’ the preconference season 9-1. We’re ranked #3, RPI #1. 47.2 rebounds per game.

“Dunno how it happened but we had 4 games in the same week, Dec. 26-31. Crazy. Won ‘em all but still…

19-1, 9-0 at the halfway mark. Tied with #1 Syracuse fer 1st.

“Los’ 84-88 at Duke. Shoulda won. Not happy. Tuck played dumb, fouled out an’ on’y played 18 min. No dissiplin at all. 6 lef’ ta play but 4 opn the road, 2 a them aginst ranked teams includin’ #1 Syracuse.

“Los’ by 3 at Louisville. Tuck got in foul trouble agin. We’re 2 back a Syracuse, tied with Duke an’ on’y 1 ahead a North Carolina. Not good.

“It come down ta the las’ reg’ler season game, us at #1 Syracuse. We was beat by 10 but finished 2nd. We kin beat these guys.

“Wake Fores’ in the round a 8. Beat ‘em by 20 an’ 21. Crushed ‘em. #2 in the country North Carolina nex’. Los’ by 14 then won by 16 earlier. We got #1, 2, 3, 5 in the country in our conference. We’re #3 right now.

“75-50. 60 RBs. We absolutely KILT ‘em up front. Now #1 Syracuse fer the title. I think we git a #1 seed either way but if we win #1 overall.

“73-61. Champs! Now ta see if we’re #1 overall. We should be.

“Nope. They done give it ta Syracuse irregardless. That’s jes a ripoff. #1 in the Midwest, so #2 overall. Our conference got all 4 #1 seeds.

“Strolled ta the Sweet Sixteen. Crushed Creighton by 28 there. #14 ranked, #3 seed Ohio State in the Elite Eight. Beat ‘em by 20 so on ta the final four. My ole team Houston, #3 in the country, upset #1 Syracuse so we’d play them. #11 Michigan State vs. #5 Duke on the other side. No reason why we cain’t win it all this year.

“Here we was at the final four. It was my fourth time but I never had me a team like this one. 89-72 over Houston an’ it was us an’ Duke fer the title; they won by 5 in their semifinal. We beat ‘em bad at our place an’ los’ by 4 at theirs. Mike Hess banged up his. He’ll play but he ain’t 100%.

68-65. Finely! It weren’t easy. They hit a three ta tie it with 6 seconds lef’. We brung it down hopin’ ta go inside but Duke’s D was terrific. With the clock about ta run out Tuck got it ta Olin what was hot all night. He was about 22 feet away from the hoop with a han’ in his face but he hadta shoot or the time ‘ud run out an’ we’d be in OT. He launched it an’ it went in- off’n the glass. Not sure he planned it that way but it counted!

“Cain’t tell ya how great it felt ta finely win us a title! First is the best they say, an’ after all these years an’ a few more titles, I agree!

Ben Olin was Tourmanent MOP. Trey Hall was national freshman a the year. I got the national coach a the year award. In confernce Trey got the freshman award. Mike Hess got 1st team, Trey, Ben and Marq Jake got 2nd team.

“Lotsa offers includin’ some real good ones but I ain’t goin’ nowhere.

I axed fer a facilities upgrade. Got it. Now at A level. Aftert19 years as a head coach, about ta turn 57 years ole, I was 485-159, .753. Reputation 98, Team Prestige 97. Lookin’ ta go back ta back!”

“We’ll find out about that next week.”

“It was perty good ta be sittin’ in the cat bird seat as defendin’ champs an’ #1 ranked preseason. I wasn’t about ta let my kids git swelled heads though. I’d work that out of ‘em! We did have a heckuva team comin’ back.

2 scholarships. Lookin’ at 10 recruits.

8 on the Norton Lis’ includin’ #3, PF Trey Hall, #4, SF Joe Goff, #6 SF Ben Olin, #8 PF Mike Hess, #9 PG Jay Tuck, #10 PG Steve Aron.

“No in season tourney this year. Scheduel is perty loaded. In conf. we play the 3 bes’ teams on the road late. Uh oh! Got my 2 recruits, one big, one PG, both top 10.

“1, 2, 3, 5, 6 all in our conf. We’re #1 but wow!

“Ready ta start the season. I got the hosses.

“6 of our 1st 8 on the road.

“Crushed both #18 Stanford an’ #24 Utah at their places. Great 1st week.

“Ben Olin got 52 aginst Georgetown!

“Trey Hall got 24 an’ 22 aginst UCLA. We’re 5-1. A bad night aginst Auburn when the shots wouldn’t drop.

“Agin, 4 games in the las’ week a the year. What’s goin’ on with that? 3 in conference.

“Won all 4, BIG! We’re 11-1. 3-0, #2, RPI #1. Avergin’ 45.0 RBs, 8.2 TOs. Helluva team!

“3 game week endin’ at #6 Duke. Beat ‘em, 87-65; 35 fer Olin, 26 fer Goff, +21 RBs. We’re killin’ everbody right now. 15-1, 7-0. Still #2 ta Syracuse. We play ‘em at our place this week.

Beat #1 Syracuse 95-70. 32, 12 fer Goff, 24, 13, 5 fer Olin, +26 RBs! I call that emphatic!

“Beat #8 North Carolina by 20. How Syracuse is still #1 completely mystifies me. We’re #2, RPI #1. What’s it take!

“Well we’re at Syracuse this week, an’ at #3 Louisville 3 days later. That’ll tell a lot.

Beat Syracuse 86-67 at their place. Beat Louisville 80-60 at their place. Great week! 2 game lead in conference. Finally ranked #1!

We en’ the reg’ler season at 26-1, 18-0. #1, RPI #1. We won the conference by 2 over Syracuse, 4 or more over everbody else. Averged 43.9 RBs an’ 9.0 TOs.

“Trey Hall is #3 on the Norton Lis’.

“We play #9 seed NC State in the quarter finals.

“75-40. #6 ranked, #4 seed Louisville is nex’.

“98-72. It’s #2 ranked, 74-63#2 seed Syracuse fer the title. Trey Hall hurt his hip but he’ll play.

Beat 'em easy. We should be #1 overall in the NCAAs. Hess hurt his back. He won’t be 100% fer our firs’ game but he’ll play. Hall might be 1005, er close at leas’.

“Yep, #1 in the Eas’.

“We cruised ta the Sweet Sixteen where we faced #5 seed Western Kentucky.

“97-59. Syracuse got upset by Cincinnati. Then North Carolina an’ Louisville got upset. Nex’ is Maryland in the Elite Eight. Beat ‘em by 14 early in the year.

106-62. My guys is real focused. On ta the final four. We’ll play #13 Cincinnati, an’ #19 Duke will play #10 UConn. The path is wide open fer us ta repeat.

“82-52, an’ it’s #10 UConn fer the title.
We beat ‘em by 21 at our place in December.

98-79. On’y question I got about this whole season is how the heck did we lose ta Auburn in the 2nd game a the season? An’ guess what? We on’y got 1 guy graduatin’! Threepeat!!!

Awards: Trey Hall got tourney MOP an’ made the national 1st team. Jay Goff was national freshman a the year. I got the national coach a the year award. In conference Goff got the rookie award, Trey Hall made 1st team, Goff an’ Olin made 2nd team.

“Lots a real good job offers but I ain’t ever leavin’ here.

“I axed fer a facilities upgrade but I didn’t ‘spec’ ta git it. An’ I didn’t!

Team Prestige is 100, my record is 520-160, .765. Reputation is 98. Let’s go fer that threepeat!

“Scary good team. We got 3 scholarships. Lookin’ at 8.

9 guys on the Norton Lis’ includin’ Olin at #2, Hall at #3, Goff at #4, Tuck at #6, Aron at #8, Evans at #13. Playin’ time could be a problem!

“Got 2 of our 3 an’ still in the runnin’ fer the third. No in season tourmanent agin this year but a tough scheduel.

“Got the 3rd recruit.

“Practice started taday. My 2nd unit may be the toughest opposition my first unit faces this year. We’re picked #1 in the conference and #1 in the country.

“Two weeks in we’re 4-0. Closes’ game was 33 points. All aginst ranked teams. Avergin’ 47.3 RBs an’ 5.8 TOs. On the road at #2 Creighton nex’. That’ll tell us somethin’!

“86-74. At leas’ it was kinda close. Then we beat #7 Arizona by 27.

“109 points at #8 Kansas. We en’ the preconference season at 9-0. 46.8 RBs per game, 7.2 TOs.

“Rollin’ over everbody. Mos’ games not close. Closes’ was 12, nex’ closes’ 14, everthin’ else 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 point wins. 20-0, 11-0, #1, #1 RPI. BUT… Syracuse is still undefeated in conference. They come here on Feb. 20. Everbody hit our SAT score. 5 guys made semifinal Norton Lis’.

“Beat #2 Syracuse at our place but on’y by 10
. Closes’ game a the year.

“27-0, 18-0 goin’ ta the pos’ season.

“Ben Olin #8 on the finalist list fer the Norton Award.

We breezed to the tourmanent final agin Syracuse like we ‘spected. Their SF an’ C are the guys we gotta stop.

104-62. WOW! We done this ta the #2 team in the country on a neutral court!

#1 in the Eas’.

“#4 ranked team got beat in the 1st roun’, #5, 7, 9 an’ a whole bunch a others in the 2nd but we strolled ta the Sweet Sixteen.

Beat Ole Miss. by 38. Lots a upsets all over the place. On’y Syracuse’s bracket has #1 vs. #2 in the Elite 8. We’re agin #6. Beat ‘em by 19

“We’ll play Syracuse agin in the Final Four an’ it’s #3 Texas vs. #15 Arizona in the other game.

“We beat Syracuse by 10, then by 42. Les’ see what happens.

104-80 an’ we play #3 ranked Texas, 35-3, fer the title. They’re tough inside.

“88-64, an’ a threepeat!!! We got 71 wins in a row
. Nex’ year we go after UCLA’s record a 88 in a row. Strange game though. With a bout 12 minutes lef’ Jay Goff went down. Turned out he broke a ankle. He should be back in time fer the start a practice nex’ season. Then jes’ afore I was gomnna take him out fer good, Trey Hall busted a finger! He should be back in plenty a time too but I never seen nuthin’ like it in my life!

“Ben Olin got tourney MOP an’ 2nd team. I got national coach a the year. In conference Trey Hall got defensive POY, Ben made 1st team an’ Jay Goff an’ Trey made 2nd team.

“I rehired my 3 assistants cuz they all done a great job. I axed fer a contrac’ extension an’ a raise. Nope.

“Team Prestige still at 100. My record is 556-160, .777. Reputation is 98. Goin’ fer UCLA’s record an’ the fourpeat.

“Two goals this year. First the fourpeat. No college hoops player has ever won four. Back in the days when John Wooden was winnin’ alla them titles freshmen wasn’t eligible so nobody ever done it. I’d love ta see my seniors Hall, Allen an’ Erst do it. On’y Hall played a lot but still. The other goal is ta beat UCLA’s record a 88 in a row. We’re at 71. That one ain’t near as importent but it’d be nice.

“3 scholarships. Lookin’ at 8 guys.

“We got #1, 2, 3, 4, 6 on the Norton Lis’ an’ 5 others.

“3 years in a row no in season tourmanent. Makes no sense. Then we got 6 straight road games.

“We got all 3 recruits we was after, a PF, a SF, an’ a PG.

“An’ here we was, ready ta start the season. I wasn’t too optimistic about the UCLA record with alla them road games but I thought we had a perty good chance at a fourpeat an’ that was a lot more important!

“Center Rob Tate got 28 an’ 25 in our opener. Quite a start fer a freshman! We got 56 RBs an’ 1 TO- scary! Then Tate got 29 an’ 17 in the secon’ game! All 3 recruits signed.

“Tate got 2 more double doubles in the 2nd week an’ we’re at 4-0, 75 in a row.

“Tate’s streak stopped at 5. He missed by 1 in game 6, 21 an’ 9. We’re 6-0.

“We survived that 6 in a row on the road thing. Nolw we come home ta face #1 Maryland.

“Beat ‘em by 20! Tate got 23 RBs, the team got 59.

“Another one a them nutso 4 game weeks ta en’ the month a December. We won ‘em all. 12-0, 3-0, #1, #1. 83 wins in a row. It’s getting’ close! We’re +17.4 on the boards an’ +4.3 in TOs, an’ plus 8.2 in assists.

87 in a row, 16-0, 7-0, #1, #1. Facin’ #2 in the country, undefeated Syracuse, at our place, ta tie the record.

99-74 ta tie the record. Boston College, here, ta break it. They’re 5-13 so…

“85-36.
We own the record. It’s jes’ a question a how many more we kin git.

“Rob Tate’s #2 on the Norton Lis’.

“Streak’s at 94 but we’re at Syracuse nex’.

“88-66.

“En’ a the reg’ler season. We’re 27-0, 18-0, #1, #1. 98 straight.

Pitt in the round a four an’ for #100 in a row.

“101-71.
Syracuse agin, fer the title.

“92-76 fer the confernce title
. We’ll be #1 overall agin.

“Yep. First stop is Madison Square Garden.

“We got ta the Sweet Sixteen in Providence easy. Playin’ #5 seed Western Kentucky.

“86-48. Michigan State in the Elite Eight. Their PF is s’pose’ ta be the bes’ player in the country. We think Tate is.

“90-79. Syracuse one more time in the roun’ a four. Their startin’ SF broke a finger in the roun’ a 8. That’s gotta hurt them. #2 Texas vs, #7 Oregon in the other game.

“75-59 an’ it’s Texas fer the title, an’ fer 107 in a row. They’re 37-1 so they kin play.

“76-55 an’ we git our fourpeat!

“Awards: Rob Tate was tourney MOP an’ national 1st team. I got national coach a the year agin. In conference Tate was POY, Freshman OY, Defensive POY an’ 1st team along with Jay Goff. Trey Hall made 2nd team.

“I ax fer an extension an’ a raise agin. Didn’t git it las’ year so mebbe. Nope.

“Team Prestige still at 100. After 22 years I’m 592-160, .787. Reputation is 99.”

“Buddy Boy did not get his ‘fivepeat.’ Rob Tate broke his leg in the National semifinal, and Georgia Tech’s incredible win streak ended in the final. They won 144 in a row, a record which still stands and probably will forever.

“Buddy Boy coached until he was 81. He wound up with a record of 1175-326, .782, #1 in wins by a wide margin. He won four more titles, for a total of eight, second only to John Wooden.

“His was truly a legendary career. This ends our series on Jerome ‘Buddy Boy’ Blakelee.”
