Poor Execution Leads to Poor Loss for Missouri Tigers

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The first game of the Kim Anderson era didn't exactly go as expected for the Missouri Tigers as the team picked up a poor loss on the road in New Orleans against Tulane (1-0), falling by a score of 60-73.

Many experts placed the Green Wave at or near the bottom in their first season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, but they certainly didn't play that way, shooting well and forcing turnovers in order to defeat a tough team from the SEC.

"Turnovers were our killer tonight," said Anderson, whose team had 16 of them. "That and poor shooting [36.7%]. You can't execute when you are missing shots and turning over the ball. And clearly that is what we struggled with before."

"We worked on defense this week in practice, and I thought we came out slow on that end," said new assistant coach Clifton Clark. "We didn't really rotate well as a team and had to move to the 2-3 zone late in the second half, and that seemed to work a little bit better. We'll need to work on that some more."

Anderson made the surprise decision to start freshman Shannon Collins over sophomore Derek Davis at point guard, and Collins struggled in his first collegiate action. He accumulated just 6 points on 2-6 shooting (2-5 from 3), and while he had 5 rebounds and 5 assists, he also had 5 fouls and 7 turnovers.

"I had a blast out there," said Collins, "But sadly we couldn't come out on top. We just have to keep working. We came close for sure."

Lavar Burditt had a nice game for Anderson's side, with 17 points. D.A. Morgan led the way for Tulane with 15 points.

The Tigers travel to Ohio to take on Kent State (1-0) on the 17th.
