Thanks again. Opening soon at a theater near you! I am actually going to turn "The Blade" into a real novel after the semester ends. More plot less basketball but he'll still be a hoops coach.

January 1986
EEC up to 12 member nations

January 1
“Joe Butts here. 70-48 over Western KY to close out pre-conf. play at 12-2. Our 2 losses were by 1 point and 3 points over teams that were #4 and #13 at the time. Not bad!

“This week we start conf. B play with 5-7 Bright Yams here, and then at #2 Indiana, 13-1. That one will be a challenge. TOUGH conf.! 5 top 10 games, 11 top 25!”

January 8
75-46 vs. Bright Yams. Coach?”

“5 TOs, 37 RBs, and we led all the way. 26, 8, 2 for Ran, 23, 5 for Kris, 16, 4, 3 for Tod.”

76-82 at #2 Indiana.”

“Tough one. They led by as many as 19 but we actually came back and caught them. Our guards were in foul trouble late and that, along with 20 TOS, did us in. We’ve been doing great with TOs but not tonight. 30, 2, 4, 2, 2 for Ran. We played well against an excellent team and we’ve still only lost to very good teams and we’ve kept it close.”

“Another challenge in that department next. #6 Syracuse, 10-5, comes to town. Then we’re at 4-9 Memphis.”

“We would love to beat Syracuse. That’s a big challenge but it would be a huge win.”

January 15
63-60 over #6 Syracuse here at home! Coach?”

“This was a great win. It was tied 4 times in the last 2 minutes but they never got the lead. 7 guys had between 6 and 15 points. 9 TOs.”

“Then 69-72 at Memphis.

“This was an exceedingly frustrating loss for lots of reasons. First and foremost, we lost John Monk for at least two weeks due to a bruised calf. He got hurt 4 minutes into the game. Then When Ran and Kris both got in early foul trouble we had to go way down deep. Our bench played really well but I can’t help feel it would have been different with our starters in, and they won it at the line. We’re 2-2 in conf. play and it would be nice to be 3-1.”

“#10 Oklahoma, 14-1, here, then 8-7 West VA there.”

January 22
“Joe Butts on ‘Sportscenter.’ UML is rockin’! 69-51 over #10 Oklahoma here. 7 TOs, 36 RBs. 17, 8, 3, 2 for Ran, 14, 7, 4 for Clif.

“Then we travelled to West VA and won a squeaker 63-60. +7 RBs but 18 TOs. 13, 11, 2, 3 for Ran, 13, 7, 3, 2 for Kris, 14 for sub Dan Schy.

We’re 16-4, 4-2, tied for 3rd, 1 back of Indiana, 2 back of Creighton.

“This week we host 10-7, 2-4 Arizona, then 11-7, 2-4 Marquette.”
January 29

“Another great week for UML. 85-68 vs. Arizona. 21, 6 for Kris, 16, 3, 6 for Tod. 12 TOs.

85-63 over Marquette. 27, 4 for Kris, 18, 5, 4 for Tod, 13, 7 for Ran. 9 TOs, +11 RBs.

We’re in a 3 way tie for 2nd, 1 back of Indiana.

“Ran Minn is #7 and Kris More #12 on the Norton List.

“This week were at 11-8, 4-4 Mississippi ST, then we host 10-11, 1-7 Texas.”

Marcos rigs election, then forced from power. Corazon Aquino becomes President

February 5
59-50 At MS ST. 18, 14 for Ran, 16, 5, 3 for Kris.

“81-59 vs. Texas who are having a very down year. 27, 5, 6, 4 for Ran, 20, 8, 2 for Kris. These two are really playing well right now. 8 TOs, 33 RBs.

“This could be a very tough week on the road. 1st we’re at #13 Creighton, 18-3, 7-3. Then it’s #17 Stanford, 15-7, 5-5. If we go 1-1 I think Coach will be pleased.

“UML is tied for 2nd with OK, 1 back of Indiana.”

February 12

“We are now ranked #6, RPI #6. Still tied for 2nd, 1 back.

“This week #11 Georgia, 18-8, 6-6, comes to town. They beat us by 1 in the NIT preseason title game.

“Ran Minn is #5, Kris More #14 on the Norton list.

“Then we’re at 9-15, 4-8 Bright Yams, the only unranked team we face in our last 6 regular season games. We’re 9-3 vs. ranked teams right now.”

February 19

“74-68 at Bright Yams. 4 in double figures. 15, 11 for Ran, 17, 2, 2 for Clif, 15 for Kris, 12, 4, 4 for Tod. +15 RBs.

“John Monk reinjured his calf but he should be okay for our next game.

“A HUGE week to end the regular season, first it’s #2 in the country, #1 in conf. Indiana here, 26-2, 13-1, then we travel to 18-9, 8-6 Syracuse, #8 in the country.”

February 26
64-66 to #2 Indiana. +12 RBs. We had 3 threes, they had 10, including the last one with 0.9 left. Tough loss. 27, 11, 2, 4 for Ran. We’ve lost a few but we’ve been competitive in every game so far this season.

“68-61 at #8 Syracuse
. 16, 8 for Kris, 11, 8, 2 for Ran, 6, 12 for John Monk. 11 TOs, 35 RBs."

March 1986
NFL adopts instant replay

March 5
“Ran Minn is #5 on the Norton list. No one goes pro. UML finishes the regular season 25-5, 13-3. We’re #7, RPI #7.

March 10
“Rematch with #6 seed, #9 ranked Syracuse, 20-10. We beat them by 3 then by 7.

“71-58.
Coach?”

“24, 4, 3 for Ran, 15, 7 for Kris. We shot well and we took 10 more trips to the line. I’m thrilled with this win.”

#6 Oklahoma, 25-3, 14-2, in the semis. We won by 18 last time and I’m sure they haven’t forgotten.”

March 11
“77-80 to #6 OK. Coach?”

“I’m disappointed. We were up 12 with 10 minutes left and we let it slip away. Ran had 21, 8, 3, 2, and 3 other guys had 12 or more.”

“How high will you go in the Big Dance?”

“I think a #2 is possible and I’d be disappointed with less than a #3. We played a tough schedule and did very well against it.”

March 12
“Not in the East.

“Not in the Midwest.

“Not in the South.

“#1 in the West. Coach?”

“I’m thrilled. You can hear how my guys feel. What a racket!”

“#2 UCLA, #3 Georgetown, #4 Florida ST, #5 Georgia.”

“Love it. Not an easy bracket but none of them are.”

March 17
21-11 Rider. Should be a mismatch.

“57-43. They played slow down. 25, 7, 3 for Ran. We had 16 TOs but they had a mind boggling 32.

“Next is #9 seed, 17-13, KS ST.

March 19
“69-57
. We had a huge 2md half, 50 points, but it was close for 25 minutes. 22, 14 for Ran, 14, 5 for Kris. 12 TOs, 40 RBs.

#17 Georgia, 22-12 is next. They beat us by 1 and then we beat them by 27.

March 24
80-62 and we’re in the Elite Eight. Coach?”

“We led for the last 37 minutes. I expected a tougher game. Tod led us with 21, 5, 4. 15, 10, 3 for Ran, 12 each for John and Clif. 13 TOs, 38 RBs.

“First time in the round of 8 in 8 years. We play #2 seed, #3 ranked UCLA, 30-4, 14-2.

March 26
87-54. WOW! Coach, you’re in the Final Four!”

“I have to say I never expected this kind of a win. 18, 10, 2 for Kris, 18, 9 for Ran, great work from everyone.”

“This is your third trip, but the first one in 15 years.”

“And this is the best team I’ve taken to the Final Four.”

“You’ll play #5 ranked Stan James Red Storm, 29-3, 14-2.”

“Only good teams are left at this point so we know we’ll face a challenge. If they have a soft spot it’s probably their inside game so we’ll try to exploit that, but make no mistake, these guys are good.”

On the other side it’s #1 Kansas vs. #2 Indiana.

“Not even thinking about that. We need to focus on our game.”

April 1986
National debt hits 2 trillion

Chernobyl

April 1
58-67 vs. Stan James. Coach?”

“It was a great ride. We didn’t shoot well tonight, 34%, and we were sloppy, 18 turnovers, but what a great season. Most of our players are back and we have some great looking kids coming in.”

April 4
Kansas won the title, 79-76.

“Awards: Ran Minn was a 1st team All American, and 1st team in conf. along with Kris More.

April 23
Coach asked for a budget increase. Got it. Budget now at $243, 101, lowest in conf. A but competitive. Salary remains at $100,000, by far the lowest in conf., and one of the lowest in college hoops.

“30-7, 13-3, Final Four, moving up to A conf. Team Prestige is up to 60. Coach is at 587-180, .765 after 23 seasons.
