College of Charleston Post Season Recap

We headed into the CAA Tournament on a three game winning streak, for other teams that wouldn’t seem like much but for a young team it gave us the most important thing to have ………… confidence. As the 6th seed we faced 3rd seeded William & Mary. Despite them being the higher seed they only finished one game ahead of us in CAA play. In the opening CAA Tournament game against William & Mary our defense set the tone for the entire game. Forcing a season high 19 turnovers we breezed through the Tribe winning 67-54. Looking at the numbers no one player stared for us, however every player who played contributed positive effort to the team.

In February 2nd seeded Delaware beat us by 23, but that team they destroyed that day and the team they would face in the Semifinals where two different clubs. Since them we’ve gained in confidence and everyone has finally understood their role. Early in the season some of the upperclassmen frustrating with sitting behind the younger players didn’t fully buy into our system. Now everyone was all in. The first half was a tight affair, going back and forth we went into halftime with a 39-37 lead. Despite being up only by 2 I was very happy, we had Delaware playing at a pace in which they were uncomfortable with. The second half tired legs caught up with Delaware as we extended our lead to as much as 18 points advancing to the final with a 69-60 win.

In the CAA title game we would face top seeded Towson, despite them being the top seed our players had zero fear against Towson. We beat them at our place and it took overtime for them to beat us at their place. Of the teams in the CAA we matched up very well against them. We trailed 33-36 at halftime but looking at the eyes of the players there was no worries. In the second half we blitzed Towson with a display of three point shooting. Finishing 15-30 from three we were on our way to the big dance with a 80-64 win. Tournament MVP Devin Mickael led the attack scoring 24 points making 6 threes.

Watching the selection show we knew we were going to get a low seed, our overall record ensured that. A low seed didn’t bother us, heck we were just happy to be among the 68 teams. So when we were announced as a 15 seed in the south region against Duke everyone in the room went wild. Yeah Duke would be extremely difficult but just being in March Madness made us have zero worries. Last season Duke was stunned by Mercer in the NCAA Tournament so I knew they wouldn’t overlook us. I gave everything we had but it was never going to be enough. They had too much talent ending our season with a 64-51 win.
