Foreign 2

Postby Wayne23 » Tue Dec 08, 2015 6:25 am

Because of the crash of the dynasty called "Foreign" I have decided to try again. I will use the same introduction. Here it is:

I am Akim Nosarrian. I was born and raised in Armenia, the greatest country in the history of the world, populated with the most brilliant people in the history of the world.

I came to the United States to play basketball. I was given a full athletic scholarship by Michigan State University. I played there for four years and I received my B. A. degree in mechanical engineering. I coached there as a graduate assistant while I pursued and completed my Master’s degree in the same subject.

I then realized that I wished to become a basketball coach, and not an engineer. I had no interest in coaching secondary school basketball. I applied for many assistant coaching positions at U. S. universities. I was hired by San Diego State as their third assistant. I did the scouting there.

After four years I moved to Texas State as second assistant. I was the bench coach/practice coach there for four years.

Then I came here to Baltimore, Maryland as the #1 assistant at Coppin ST, charged with recruiting. I served in that capacity for four years. A few weeks ago the head coach here retired and I was offered the position.

Coppin ST has recently committed itself 100% to aligning itself with foreign universities, and to admitting as high a percentage of foreign students as possible. In light of that fact I, being a former foreign student, was told that was why I was hired, and was also told that my program, as all of our other athletic programs, must recruit only students from foreign countries to play basketball here. I accepted the challenge.

We buy the Basic International Scouting report.

My staff is in place. Raoul Benoit, from France, is #1. He will scout. #2, Xi Li, from China, will be my bench/practice coach. #3 Ahmed Ali, from Dubai, will recruit. We are all experienced, especially in the area in which we will coach. Between us we speak 17 languages.

June 26

It will take about three years to get an all foreign team in place.

We have 8 scholarships this year, which is a good start.

We are looking at 13 players, from all over the world, to begin with.

How, you may ask, does a school such as this become involved with such a sophisticated program, such an undertaking as this? As it turns out, Coppin ST hired a President from the Sudan. He came with this agenda, and he convinced the Board of Regents that doing this would bring fame to this university, would “put it on the map” so to speak.

July 31

I speak with my mother back in Armenia often, by telephone. She tells me a family friend has a daughter who teaches at the University of Maryland. She tells me to call her. I am 35 years old. My mother wishes me to marry. I will call this woman, what is the harm. Since I will marry only an Armenia woman I must pursue any opportunity. There are not so many of us here in the U. S. Her name is Nessie.

August 7

Nessie and I met for coffee. It was very nice. We will go to dinner and a play in Baltimore on the weekend.

August 21

We offer to a PG, 2 SFs, and 3 PFs. We need inside players but it would be nice to find one or two more guards.

September 18

Our schedule is filled with road games so we have found weak teams to play in hopes of winning some games.

September 25

Ande Baca, PG, #245 has committed. So far we have lost 2 big men.

October 2

First day of practice. I think we have a good team, for the conference we are in.

We are picked to finish third.

I am concerned that we have only one recruit committed.

October 9

Dob Cech, SG #670 has committed. We need big men.

Nessie and I see each other at least twice each week. This will diminish once the season starts as I will be travelling more than I am now.

October 16

Key Joon, SF #1214 commits.

We lose another big man.

November 6

Here’s the lineup: Soph Dar Camp and senior Dick Chan start at guard with junior Mike Henk backing up. Junior Al Lute is at SF. Seniors Brit Weir and Rob Davy start up front with seniors Ross Pern and Mick Crew backing up.

I speak of marriage to Nessie. She says it is too soon but I believe she listens. It is important to marry, and I am of an age when I must marry fairly soon. Nessie is herself 28, so it is time in her case as well. We Armenians believe very strongly in marriage, in family.

November 20

52-56 at Northern Illinois. We were… mediocre. No one scored more than 11, we had 16 turnovers, and we had only 26 rebounds. We shot 35.3%. Not a good night.

56-47 over GA Southern, here. Center Brit Weir had 27 and 7. No one else stood out. 9 turnovers, but only 25 rebounds. I begin to worry about rebounding.

November 27

58-40 over Cleveland ST, here. 23, 10 for Weir, who is emerging as our leader. 16, 5 for PF Rob Davy. 11 turnovers and 33 rebounds. Our best game to date.

52-76 at North Alabama. 16, 4 for Weir, 9, 5 for Davy. If our last was our best game this may have been our worst. And even worse than that, Brit Weir sprained an ankle. He will miss at least one game and perhaps two.

Nessie and I had Thanksgiving dinner together. It was at a restaurant but it was very nice.

December 4

59-70 at Kennesaw ST. 14, 8, 2 for Pern, filling in for Weir. 18, 3, 2 for Davy. No one else did much. Only 20 rebounds.

Weir will play in our next game.

We decided to put one very good team on our schedule. 52-71 at Georgia Tech. 10, 9, 2 for Weir, 14, 4, 2, 2 for Davy. 19 turnovers. We did have 30 rebounds.

We are 2-4. We make some changes. Mick Crew will get more minutes, mostly at SF. Al Lute will shift to guard. Both of our starting guards, Camp and Chan will lose time.

Nessie and I are becoming closer every day. I am deciding whether to propose at Christmas or wait until the new year.

December 11

61-59 at USC Upstate. 19, 9 for Weir, 18, 4 for Davy, 10, 2, 3 for Crew in his first start. Still nothing from the backcourt. +9 rebounds. After 3 consecutive losses it was good to win a game. We are playing 5 straight road games. This was the fourth.

62-58 at Idaho ST. 18, 5 for Weir. 13, 5 for Ross Pern from the bench, and 12 for reserve guard Mike Henk. This is our best performance by a guard this season.

December 18

59-65 to UMBC here. 13, 4 for Weir. 18 rebounds, -12. We need to do something.

We’re going with a one guard offense.

67-49 over UAB here. 29 RBs (+4). 25, 5 for Weir.

December 25

66-57 at Stetson. We played badly, they played worse. 21 rebounds, 22 turnovers, and yet we won. All three inside players in double figures. The difference was we were

28-40 from the free throw line and they were 10-13.

We end pre-conference play at 6-5. -0.4 PPG, -0.6 RBPG, -0.9 TOPG. I think, at least for the moment, that we have found our lineup. There will likely be further adjustments.

We start conference play at 4-7 FL A & M, then host 6-5 Norfolk ST here.

Nessie said yes. We will fly to Armenia in late July or early August to be married in our home city of Abovian, near the capitol. She will finish the school year at Maryland, which will give her time to complete her current research. She will apply to Coppin ST (They will be thrilled to have her) and we will look for a home in the countryside outside of Baltimore.

January 1, 2021

60-73 at FL A & M. 14, 5 for Crew at guard. Still only 24 RBs (-6), and we let them shoot 54.5%.

61-47 over Norfolk ST here. 14, 11 for Weir, 11, 6 for both Crew and Davy. 34 RBs, 12 TOs. As with most mediocre teams we are very inconsistent, and much better at home than away.

Nessie and I celebrated the new year, which we hope and expect will be a wonderful year for us.

January 8

65-45 over Delaware ST here. 4 in double figures, 2 of them guards! 29 rebounds, 12 turnovers. A good game!

47-60 at Hampton. 15, 12 for Weir, 15 for Pern. Only 23 RBs, which meant we took only 33 shots. There was simply not enough offense.

January 15

62-54 over NC Central, here. 17, 11 for Weir. 33 rebounds. 10 each for Davy and Camp. A good win against a good team.

67-68 in overtime at South Carolina Upstate. We lost on a half court desperation shot, BUT we should not lose to a team that was 1-14 before this game.

Disgusting. 15, 7, 4, 2, 2 for Weir, 13, 9 for Pern. Only 10 turnovers, but we shot poorly, 36.4%, and our outside defense was terrible.

Nessie is making many calls to Armenia to plan the wedding.

January 22

50-55 at MD Eastern Shore. And now we have lost to a team that had 3 wins before tonight’s game. 19, 5 for Weir, our only consistent player; of course he is a senior. 22 turnovers.

74-54 over Morgan ST here. 21, 12 for Weir, 17, 2, 4, 3 for Crew, 10, 8 for Al Lute. We had expected a great deal from Lute but this is his first good game. 33 rebounds. We are rebounding better since the lineup changes.

We are two completely different teams at home and away. 10-9, 4-4.

One game this week, at 10-8, 4-3 Bethune-Cookman.

January 29

50-44 at Bethune-Cookman, a rare road win. No one had more than 11 for us- Rob Davy, 11, 5. We played good defense, even outside!

60-65 to Savannah ST here. We blew a 12 point lead when we committed too many fouls (22) and too many turnovers (21). 17, 7 for Weir. Only 17 rebounds. I am at a loss to explain.

February 5

66-81 at Norfolk ST. 21, 4 for Weir. 15 for Chan, 11, 5 for Davy. 20 turnovers, 19 rebounds.

The only other adjustment I can think to make is to “Favor Inside” on offense. We will try that.

Mick Crew hurt his wrist. I do not think he will miss any games.

Our A. D. gave us only two goals this season, to win 10 games and to not finish last. We will meet these goals, but I begin to think we will not surpass them by a great deal. We are 11-11, 5-6, RPI #154 with 5 regular season games to play.

February 12

38-54 at Howard. 12, 8 for Weir. 25 turnovers. We took only 26 shots in the entire game.

Nessie will fly to Armenia for spring break. Her mother and grandmother will make her wedding dress, as is our tradition. She needs to be measured, and fitted, and whatever else is involved. It is beyond me.

February 19

54-35 over MD Eastern Shore, here. No one on either team had more than 9 points. We committed only 12 turnovers, and were -1 in rebounds.

57-68 with No. Carolina A & T, here. This all but assures that we will have a losing season. 23, 7 for Weir.

February 26

76-63 at Morgan ST, the #3 team in conference. Once again, I am at a loss to explain. 19, 12, 3 for Davy, 18, 4 for Weir, 19 for Crew, 7 and 7 for Pern. 34 rebounds (+13).

13-13, 7-8, with one to play, at home against the worst team in conference. We won by 6 there.

71-48. 21, 11, 3 for Crew, 15, 6 for Davy, 10, 4, 2 for Chan, 8, 6 for Pern. 8 turnovers, 33 rebounds.

We end the regular season 14-13, 8-8, tied for 7th, the #8 seed in the conference tournament.

March 3

We play 9-18, 6-10 Delaware ST in the play in game. We won by 20 here.

March 4

73-56. 22, 2, 4, 4 for Pern, 15, 10, 2, 3 for Weir, 10, 3, 4 for Davy. Dare I hope that the “Favor Inside” strategy is working? We have won three in a row for the first time all season. This win insures us of a winning season.

Al Lute hurt his back. He is out for about a week.

We play #1 seed Hampton, 18-9, 13-3, in the quarter final round. They beat us by 13 and 16.

March 5

66-58 over Hampton. 17, 6 for Pern, 13, 7 for Weir, 12, 4 for Davy, 14, 2, 5 for Crew. 14 turnovers. We led for most of the game.
Once again, I am at a total loss.

#4 seed Norfolk ST, 17-11, 10-6, is our opponent in the semifinal round. We won by 14 here, then lost by 15 there. At this point, who can say?

March 6

78-83 in overtime, and the fascinating ride ends. 34 lead changes and 16 times. No one ever led by more than 7. 34, 7 for Weir in his last game, 16, 12, 4 for Davy in HIS last game. 16, 5, 4 for Chan. 38 rebounds, 13 turnovers.

Now we need to sign recruits!

March 18

Nessie has left for Armenia. I miss her already.

March 26

Nessie is back, full of talk and excitement about the wedding.

April 4

#13 Kansas beat #5 Iowa ST for the title.

Awards: Brit Weir is MEAC POY and 1st team. That is our only award.

April 9

We met our goals.

April 16

5 signees!

April 23

We ask for a budget increase. We get $7550.

We end the year at 16-14, 8-8, RPI #186. +2.0 PPG, +1.6 RBPG, -0.7 TOPG. My numbers are:
Off-28, Def- 40, Recruit- 40, Scout- 61, Player Dev- 34, Reputation- 21. A good first year, all in all, as frustrating as it was.

May 1

We buy International Basic report.

Wedding preparations are at full speed.

Nessie is actually flying home to Armenia in early July, even though the wedding is not until July 27.

June 5

Again, no foreign transfers.

June 26

We have 5 scholarships. We need both, but inside players more so.

July 4

Nessie leaves tomorrow. We have moved everything into our new home. I will now live here until we return from Armenia, when we will be here together as husband and wife.

July 24

I leave for Armenia.

August 4

We return from Armenia as husband and wife.

September 18

We have many home games so we scheduled some more challenging teams.

We have two commitments, a guard and a PF.

October 2

We have a better team than last year. It is too soon to know how much better.

I am amazed to find that we are picked to finish last in the MEAC.

Our goals are the same as last year- win 10 games, do not finish last.

November 6

Here is the lineup, for now. It is definitely going to change over time: Junior Dar Camp and senior Mike Henk will share the Point, equally to begin with. Freshman Anda Baca will start at SG with freshman Dob Cech behind him; Baca was our big scorer in both exhibitions. Freshmen Heno Phis and Rupi Waso will share SF, with Phis backing up the inside positions. Freshman Apo Poch will start at PF, and senior Al Lute will start at C. We have many freshmen in key positions, which will lead to change. It seems so far that we are stronger outside than inside but time will tell.

Nessie is expecting in late May or early June.

November 20

We start at home with a 73-57 win over Vermont. 17 for Baca, 15, 5, 3 for Camp, 10, 4, 5, 2 for Lute. 8, 5 for Henk from the bench; Waso and Cech also played well from the bench. 31 rebounds, 13 turnovers. A good start.

79-58 over Tulsa here. 28 for Baca, 10, 9 for Lute, but he fouled out, 14, 4, 3 for Phis, 11, 3, 6 for Henk from the bench. 11 turnovers. 27 rebounds (+1)

November 27

59-56 at Central Arkansas. 18, 3, 2, 2 for SF Phis, 11, 5 for Baca, 5, 13 for Lute, 10,3, 6 for Henk. We are showing great balance between inside and outside so far. 13 TOs, 29 RBs.

65-55 in overtime with Nevada here. It was close all the way. Nevada tied it with a desperation shot at the end of regulation, then we completely dominated in overtime. 33,7, 3 for Baca, 13 for Phis, 11, 6, 6 for Camp. 10 turnovers, 36 rebounds.

I could not be happier with my team so far.

Nessie says she feels fine, and she seems to be doing very well.

December 4

81-67 over Furman here. 18 for Baca, 16, 6, 2 for Poch, 10, 5, 4,5 for Lute. The bench was very productive, 12, 4 for Waso, 10 for Cech. +6 TOs, +8 RBs.

It must be noted that all of our games save one have been at home thus far.

44-57 to Sam Houston ST here at home. The first time we have played poorly. We shot 25%; really, we shot poorly. Our defense, ball handling (11 TOs), and rebounding (30) were fine. But one must make baskets!

5-1 to date.

December 11

70-42 over Belmont here. 27, 5 for Baca, 15, 8, 2 for Phis, 4, 15, 3 for Lute, 8, 6, 3 for Henk. 10 TOs, 41 RBs.

63-62 over Marshall here. Ande Baca hit a three with less than a second to go. He had 33 for the night. 11, 3, 2, 3 for Phis, 8, 4, 2 for Henk. 17 TOs and 24 RBs were not so good, but Baca seemed to make a basket whenever we needed one.

7 of our first 8 were at home; we are 7-1. Now 3 on the road to finish the pre-conference season.

December 18

64-73 at UMBC. 16 for Baca, 12 for Henk. 22 turnovers and 22 rebounds told the story.

This is the most points, by 6, that we have given up this season.

64-50 at USC Upstate. 25 for Baca, 5, 13, 4, 1, 3 for Lute, 12, 4, 3 for Henk.

We finish pre-conference play at Memphis. We wanted to schedule one very good team.

December 25

54-59 at Memphis. 12 each for Baca and Henk, 10, 4, 2 for Phis, 7, 8, 2 for Lute, 9 for Cech, who is the odd man out. We would love to find more minutes for him.

8-3 for Pre-conference play. Very good! +7.3 PPG, +2.2 RBPG, +1.3 TOPG. Baca is averaging 21.0. Lute is our only good rebounder, 8.9.

Camp and Henk will get more time at SF, and Waso will lose most of his time there.

We had a quiet but nice Christmas. We thought about bringing our parents here but decided that next year, when the baby has arrived, will be better.
