December 11

63-57 at Gonzaga. 17, 5 for Tapa, 10, 11 for Grik, 15 for Baca. 13 TOs.

79-56 over Northwestern here. 22, 6 for Tapa, 11, 11, 4 for Grik, 15, 2, 3, 4 for Baca. +10 RBs.

December 18

63-68 at UMBC. 24, 6 for Tapa but no one else did much of anything. Only 19 RBs.

71-60 over Auburn here. 16, 5, 3, 2 for Tapa, 13 each for Prou and Baca.

Waso hurt his wrist. Day to day.

December 25

77-51 at Arkansas ST. 18, 6, 4 for Tapa but a real team effort. 12 TOs.

We end pre-conference play at 9-2. RPI #2, but not ranked. +11.9 PPG, +4.0 RBPG, +1.4 TOPG.

Hayk really enjoyed the holidays. All 4 of his grandparents are with us for the week. Koris, being 15 days old, was oblivious to all of the goings on.

January 1, 2024

55-62 at Morgan ST. 17, 7, 2 for Tapa, 6, 12, 2 for Grik, but we did not produce enough offense. We shot only 33.3%.

71-57 over NC A & T here. 19, 7 for Tapa, 16, 7 for Prou. 7 TOs, 39 RBs.

January 8

60-44 over NC Central here. 15, 7 for Tapa, 10, 8 for Grik. 11 TOs.

58-56 at FL A & M. Close all the way. We won it on a 14 footer by Tapa, who had 18 and 6.

We are ranked. #24, RPI #6. 12-3, 3-1.

January 15

73-58 at South Carolina ST. 29, 3, 3, 2 for Baca, his first good game in some time. 24, 4, 3, 3 for Tapa. 13 TOs.

81-38 over Hampton here. Real team effort. Great defense.

Nessie goes back to work this week.

January 22

64-46 at Howard. 23, 11 for Grik, 16, 5, 3 for Baca. +12 RBs.

January 29

65-60 over Delaware ST here. 18, 4, 2, 5 for Tapa, 15, 4, 2 for Baca. 11 TOs.

16-3, 7-1 at the halfway point of conference play. 1 ahead of 2 teams, 2 ahead of 2 more teams.

61-72 at Bethune-Cookman. We fell behind by 22 early and were never able to catch up. We shot 31%, they shot an unbelievable 65.8%.

3 way tie for first place.

Tapa is #11 on the Norton list.

February 5

60-55 at NC Central. 19 for Prou, 15, 6, 3, 3 for Tapa. 9 TOs but only 21 RBs.

Apo Poch sprained his wrist. Out for about 10 days.

Big game next. Savannah ST may be our chief conference rival.

64-41 over Savannah ST here. A real team effort with lots of players contributing.

Only Bethune-Cookman is one back and we end the regular season with them here.

#20, RPI #5.

February 12

68-58 over Howard here. 16, 6, 2, 3 for Tapa. 10 and 10 for Grik. 8 TOs.

We are now 2 up on Bethune-Cookman, 3 or more on the rest, with 4 to play.

#17, RPI #4.

Tapa is #14 on the Norton list.

February 19

71-35 over MD Eastern Shore here. 17, 8, 1, 4, 2 for Tapa, 16, 3, 3,3 for Baca. 12 TOs, 35 RBs, great defense.

Dob Cech twisted his knee. Out about 5 days. Vida Bjor will get his minutes. He has played very little so this could be a chance for him.

73-63 at Hampton. 17 each for Tapa and Baca, 15, 7 for Grik. 10 TOs, 28 RBs.

#14, RPI #4.

February 26

69-66 at Norfolk ST. 21 for Baca, 18, 7 for Tapa, 12 TOs.

78-50 over Bethune-Cookman to end the regular season. 33, 3, 2, 3 for Tapa, 16, 6, 4, 4 for Grik.

Albi Nowk hurt his leg. Day to day.

23-4, 14-2, first place, 4 games ahead of the 2nd place teams. #13, RPI #4.

Nessie is overburdened. Working full time, which means teaching and research, plus taking care of the two boys and the house- it is too much. We have hired a woman who will do the housework and help to watch the boys in the evening. She will work from noon to 8:00, 5 days each week. She was willing to vary her days based upon my schedule so that her days off would be when I was available to help. We were able to draw a schedule until mid-March. At that point, assuming we are in the NCAA, there is no way to tell when I will be home.

March 2

#9 seed Norfolk ST, 11-17, 7-9 won the play in so we face them. We beat them by only 3 last week.

This year we host the tournament since we finished first in the MEAC.

March 3

65-60 over Norfolk ST. 27, 2, 5, 2 for Baca, 18, 7, 4, 3. Our two “stars” carried us, which is not unusual. 13 TOs, 29 RBs.

#4 seed FL A & M, 15-13, 9-7, meets us in the semifinals. We beat them by only 2 there, early in the conference season.

March 4

76-47. It was never a game. 29, 7, 4 for Tapa, 13, 7 for Waso from the bench. 38 RBs, 11 TOs.

It is #3 seed Bethune-Cookman, 18-9, 12-6, for the championship. We lost there by 9, then won here last week by 28. They have injuries to two key players. One will play a little, the other not at all.

March 5

74-69 and the title again! 27, 3, 4 for Baca, 13 each for Tapa and Prou. 11 TOs (+10) but only 18 RBs (-10). The game was not as close as the final score. They never led, and they scored the last 6, after we put the subs in.

Tais Tapa has climbed to #5 on the Norton list.

26-4, 14-2, regular season and tournament champions, #10, RPI #4. +12.6 PPG, +2.5 RBPG,+3.6 TOPG, +2.8 assists PG, +2.1 steals PG.

March 12

Not in the East.

#5 in the Midwest. We play the winner of the play in game.

I thought we had a chance at a #3 or #4. Oh well.

March 16

We play 16-15 Louisville from the ACC. A tough first round opponent.

101-90 in overtime. What a shoot out! 39, 6,6, 3, 4 for Baca, 25, 6, 3, 4 for Tapa. 13 TOs. Interestingly enough the last 5 shots were missed in regulation, they missed 3, we missed 2. Then we dominated the overtime.

Nowk bruised abdominals. He is likely finished for the season. He has been starting. Fortunately we are deep at the inside positions.

Next is #4 seed, #21 ranked Minnesota, 22-8. Their strength is more outside than in.

March 18

91-98 in OT. Very much like our first round game except that this time they dominated the overtime. We missed a chance to win at the end of regulation when Prou’s 24 footer rimmed out. They keyed on Tapa and Baca and kept them at reasonable levels (15 and 10. Prou had 32, 6, 3, and Grik 17, 9. But they made 17 threes and that was the difference.

A disappointing end to a very good season.

We have no seniors so all of our best players will be back.

April 4

The Final Four was in Baltimore this year so I went. It was my first time. Very exciting!

#2 UCLA beat #14 Iowa for the title.

Awards: Tais Tapa made 2nd team All American. He was MEAC POY, defensive POY, and 1st team, with Ande Baca, and Rolf Grik. I was honored as Coach of the Year.

April 23

We ask for a budget increase. $8,500.

27-5, 14-2, #11, RPI #3. A great year. 93-33, .738. Off- 41, Def- 59, Recruit- 80, Scout- 62, Player Dev- 50, Reputation- 34.

NOTE: I started this association to see whether a team comprised of all foreign players could compete, and how high they could climb. My first foreign players will be seniors next season and we have climbed fairly high, but not to the top level. I may continue for a while to see. I will only move once, if offered a job at an elite school.

November 20

92-63 over Texas Christian here. Solid performances by all 10 people we played, 8 TOs, 34 RBs.

73-60 in overtime over Hawaii here. Apo Poch is off to a great start. This is his 2nd very good game in a row. -16 RBs kept it close.

We disappeared at the end of regulation and let them come back to tie it, then we woke up again in OT.

Sub Heno Phis hurt his hand. Out about a week.

November 27

76-58 over Missouri ST here. 19 for Prou, 15, 7, 2, 2 for Grik, 13, 5, 3, 2 for Tapa. 6 TOs, 36 RBs.

92-65 over Mississippi here. 5 in double figures. Grik has had 10 or more RBs in every game so far. 7 TOs.

December 4

81-36 over Princeton here. 14, 12 for Tap, 15 each for Grik and Baca.8 TOs, 40 RBs.

Now we finally go on the road.

66-64 at Eastern Kentucky. 17, 7 for Grik. 3 problems that kept it close, poor outside defense, poor rebounding, and Baca played only
15 minutes due to fouls. We never led by more than 5. Still, we are 6-0.

December 11

73-53 at #25 Gonzaga. A great 2nd half, 42-19. 6 in double figures. +7 RBs. 17 TOs but they had 14.

68-52 at Central FL. 18 for Baca, 17 for Prou, 9 and 9 for Grik. +7 TOs, +4 RBs.

3 more pre-conference games to play, all at home.

December 18

68-29 over UMBC. Excellent defense. 20, 6, 4 for Tapa, 14, 6, 3 for Grik. 39 RBs.

77-59 over a good UTEP team here. 23, 2, 4 for Baca, 19, 7 for Tapa, 12, 6 for Grik. 9 TOs.

Grik hurt a calf. Day to day.

Ranked #21, RPI #11.

December 25

84-68 over Wagner here. Tapa, Poch, and Cech allhad 16. 14, 7, 4 for Grik. +6 TOs, +10 RBs.

11-0 for the pre-conference season. #19, RPI #8. +22.1 PPG, +6.0 RBPG, +6.8 TOPG.

Our growing family had a nice holiday. Hayk is 2 ½, Koris is one, and Nessie expects another child in May.

January 1, 2025

66-36 here over Bethune-Cookman, to begin conference play. 20, 5, 4, 2, 2 for Baca. 8 TOs.

80-64 over Norfolk ST here. 18, 10, 2, 3 for Tapa, 15, 6 for Grik. 11 TOs, 33 RBs.

January 8

67-47 at NC Central. 24, 6, 3 for Tapa, 15, 6 for Grik. +2 TOs, +5 RBs.

58-63 at Savannah ST. Our first loss. The difference was fouls. We went 5-12 from the line, they went 19-27. We should certainly have made 3 or 4 more of our foul shots but they got most of the calls. Still, we did not play well, and Cech and Tapa were hindered by foul trouble.

We are now 14-1, 1-1.

January 15

77-62 over Morgan ST. Balanced scoring. 8 TOs.

75-55 over MD Eastern Shore. 19,5, 5 for Baca, 17 for Prou.

19-1, 8-1. #14, RPI #7.

Tapa is #9 on the Norton list.

February 5

85-51 over Howard here. 18, 12, 3 for Grik, 16, 5 for Tapa, 13, 6, 2 for Poch, 11 with 8 assists for Baca. 9 TOs, 31 RBs, 23 assists on 31 baskets.

79-65 at SC ST. 21, 7, 5, 3 for Tapa. Good games all around.

Our lead is now 3, with 5 to play.

#10, RPI #6.

February 12

71-73 at MD Eastern Shore. Poor defense, we allowed them to shoot 54.8%. And the calls went against us; 19 fouls called against us and only10 on them. I very nearly received a technical foul but the game was too close so I eased back. They won when we missed a 23 foot shot at the end of the game.

76-58 over FL A & M. 5 in double figures. 10 TOs, 32 RBs.

Bad news. Sophomore, Albi Nowk, our first big off the bench, averaging 13.7 minutes per game, injured his knee. He is out for the season.

#8, despite the loss. RPI #8.

Tapa is #7 on the Norton list.

February 19

57-52 at Morgan ST. 19 for Poch, 14, 11, 3, 3 for Tapa, 10, 11 for Grik.

53-44 over Delaware ST here. 24, 8, 2, 5 for Tapa. 6 TOs, 33 RBs. They kept it close until late in the game.

77-52 at Hampton. Great production from all. 7 TOs, 36 RBs.

We win the conference by 4 games.

25-2, 14-2, #7, RPI #6. +17.8 PPG, +5.1 RBPG, +6.7 TOPG, +3.5 assists PG, +3.2 steals PG. We really dominated the conference.

March 1

#9 seed Norfolk ST, 13-15, 7-9, won the play in so we play them in the round of 8. We won by 16 there.

March 2

80-69. 22, 5, 2 for Poch, 15, 7, 2 for Grik. Not happy with the defense. They shot 52.1%. 10 TOs.

#4 seed FL A & M, 17-11, 9-7, won so we play them in the semifinal round. We won by 18 here.

March 3

71-46. 19 each for Tapa and Grik. 10 TOs, 29 RBs. It was never a game.

#6 seed NC A & T, 16-13, 7-9. They kept winning so we meet them in the finals. We won by only 4 there.

March 4

68-61 and another title!

#5, RPI #4.

Tapa has climbed to #3 on the Norton list.

March 12

Hoping for a #2 or #3 seed.

Very disappointed, #5 East, the toughest division and lower than we earned with #5, #4. We play La Salle, 21-11. Oh well, prove them wrong by winning.

March 16

73-54 over La Salle. 21, 7, 2 for Tapa, 12, 7 for Grik. 8 TOs, 34 RBs.

We play #4 seed, #17 ranked Syracuse, 23-10 next.

March 18

76-67 over #17 Syracuse. 26 for Tapa, 12 each for Prou and Cech. 6 TOs (+14). Great win! It gives us our first 30 win season.

We play #1 seed, #1 ranked, #1 RPI UCLA, 30-5. They have been beaten 5 times, so it is possible.

March 23

62-63. We played outstanding ball all night long. On the last possession our defense was solid. They were not able to get the ball inside, or even to get an open shot. Finally, with the clock running out, their Point Guard threw up a contested 25 footer; it went in, and that was that. A very difficult way to lose. It was a defensive battle; we had 23 turnovers and they had 24. We had 30 rebounds and they had 31. I will be awake all night after this game, thinking, one more shot; if we had made one more shot…

This was the last game for Ande Baca, who had an outstanding career. Apo Poch, Dob Cech, Rupi Waso, and Heno Phis are also graduating. All of them had wonderful years with us and will be missed.

March 26

Eufe Kapu, PG, #142 signed.

April 1

Bethune-Cookman won the CHI.

April 2

Feng Pai, SF, #438 signed.

April 4

I went to the Final Four in Detroit.

We lost to the champion; UCLA beat Duke by 7 for the title.

Awards: Junior Tais Tapa again made 2nd team All American. In the MEAC Tapa was again POY, defensive POY, and 1st team along with senior Apo Poch and junior Rolf Grik. Senior Ande Baca made 2nd team and I was again named Coach of the Year.

April 23

We ask for a budget increase again. Surprisingly, we get $8,000.

I receive another 5% raise.

30-3, 14-2, MEAC champs, Sweet Sixteen, almost further. Ranked #5, RPI #4. My numbers for 5 years: 123-36, .774. Off- 45, Def- 65, Recruit- 80, Scout- 62, Player Dev- 55, Reputation- 39.
