March 2
#9 seed Norfolk ST, 11-17, 7-9 won the play in so we face them. We beat them by only 3 last week.
This year we host the tournament since we finished first in the MEAC.
March 3
65-60 over Norfolk ST. 27, 2, 5, 2 for Baca, 18, 7, 4, 3. Our two “stars” carried us, which is not unusual. 13 TOs, 29 RBs.
#4 seed FL A & M, 15-13, 9-7, meets us in the semifinals. We beat them by only 2 there, early in the conference season.
March 4
76-47. It was never a game. 29, 7, 4 for Tapa, 13, 7 for Waso from the bench. 38 RBs, 11 TOs.
It is #3 seed Bethune-Cookman, 18-9, 12-6, for the championship. We lost there by 9, then won here last week by 28. They have injuries to two key players. One will play a little, the other not at all.
March 5
74-69 and the title again! 27, 3, 4 for Baca, 13 each for Tapa and Prou. 11 TOs (+10) but only 18 RBs (-10). The game was not as close as the final score. They never led, and they scored the last 6, after we put the subs in.
Tais Tapa has climbed to #5 on the Norton list.
26-4, 14-2, regular season and tournament champions, #10, RPI #4. +12.6 PPG, +2.5 RBPG,+3.6 TOPG, +2.8 assists PG, +2.1 steals PG.
March 12
Not in the East.
#5 in the Midwest. We play the winner of the play in game.
I thought we had a chance at a #3 or #4. Oh well.
March 16
We play 16-15 Louisville from the ACC. A tough first round opponent.
101-90 in overtime. What a shoot out! 39, 6,6, 3, 4 for Baca, 25, 6, 3, 4 for Tapa. 13 TOs. Interestingly enough the last 5 shots were missed in regulation, they missed 3, we missed 2. Then we dominated the overtime.
Nowk bruised abdominals. He is likely finished for the season. He has been starting. Fortunately we are deep at the inside positions.
Next is #4 seed, #21 ranked Minnesota, 22-8. Their strength is more outside than in.
March 18
91-98 in OT. Very much like our first round game except that this time they dominated the overtime. We missed a chance to win at the end of regulation when Prou’s 24 footer rimmed out. They keyed on Tapa and Baca and kept them at reasonable levels (15 and 10. Prou had 32, 6, 3, and Grik 17, 9. But they made 17 threes and that was the difference.
A disappointing end to a very good season.
We have no seniors so all of our best players will be back.
April 4
The Final Four was in Baltimore this year so I went. It was my first time. Very exciting!
#2 UCLA beat #14 Iowa for the title.
Awards: Tais Tapa made 2nd team All American. He was MEAC POY, defensive POY, and 1st team, with Ande Baca, and Rolf Grik. I was honored as Coach of the Year.
April 23
We ask for a budget increase. $8,500.
27-5, 14-2, #11, RPI #3. A great year. 93-33, .738. Off- 41, Def- 59, Recruit- 80, Scout- 62, Player Dev- 50, Reputation- 34.
NOTE: I started this association to see whether a team comprised of all foreign players could compete, and how high they could climb. My first foreign players will be seniors next season and we have climbed fairly high, but not to the top level. I may continue for a while to see. I will only move once, if offered a job at an elite school.
