No major jobs of interest opened up in the offseason, though Cornell did get rid of their coach after a typically abysmal season.
The Board denied my request for facilities upgrades this year, but it's my job to keep asking.

All-Time Team Record: 1,037-1,503 (.0408)
Ivy League Championships: 3
NCAA Appearances: 2
NIT Appearances: 1
CBI Appearances: 1

Our goals have become tougher:

01 Finish 1st in the Ivy League
02 Win 15+ Games
03 No Academic Ineligibility

We have no available scholarships this year, creating the odd situation where I have no recruiting to do. Our only graduating senior this year is walk-on Troy Mance, and with Chris Anyan coming onboard this season as a tranfer, we have only two walk-ons and 13 scholarship players. Next year we will have EIGHT open spots.

AD really nailed us with this one … if we run the table on this non-conference slate we'll be a top ten team for sure. Eleven of our first 14 games on the road is unbelievably brutal. I think I may have pissed him off when I wrote an email to my assistants that got back to his office that essentially said if I'd wanted to spend the season on the road I'd have at least hoped for them to be working on the **** facility upgrades I'd asked for. But hey, the truth hurts. I'm doing my job.

BOMBSHELL ACCUSATIONS AT BROWN

"Were transfer students actually qualified for Ivy League?" Alumni ask following NCAA Tourney campaign.
Three Bears players currently enrolled in summer study programs, risk academic ineligiblity

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A group of concerned Brown alumni have asked school administration to again consider investigating the Brown athletics program, and basketball operations in particular, in light of recent transfers which have allowed the Bears to rocket from 7-20 obscurity to a 22-win almost-Sweet-Sixteen phenomenon this past season.

Though the Bears are heavily favored to be in a battle with Dartmouth for the conference championship and another shot at the NCAA Tournament, many are more concerned about the fact that three of Danninger's recent recruits -- North Smithfield's own Mohamed Jones, as well as two transfer students, star guard Vegas Boston and forward Dennis Werner -- have been struggling academically while enrolled at Brown and may not have met the rigorous academic entry standards other students are subjected to.

"it's a travesty," says David Reynault, '13, who practices law in Providence. "I paid good money for a Brown education and never once gave a damn about athletics. I had to see my degree sullied by the travesty that was the academic scandal years ago, and now our so-called 'by-the-rules' coach is bending them to get kids into school who can play the game. They may care about this kind of crap at party school Dartmouth, but I went to Brown for a reason."

The school, and Danninger in particular, have refused to comment beyond noting that the players have indeed been enrolled in summer courses and that if ruled ineligible they will not play.

End of Semester Update on grades
Mohamed Jones has been released from the team, effective immediately. His GPA dropped below 2.0 despite six months of tutoring and it is clear he's not putting the effort required of an Ivy League student athlete. Our inability to beat Dartmouth seemingly EVER kept us nailbiting all the way to end – with the conference in the state it was this year, not winning the conference title was liable to send us into the NIT and send a wildly inferior team into the NCAAs where they'd leave us as a laughingstock after all the hard work we'd put in during that brutal pre-conference season. We lost the final game of the year to CORNELL of all teams, but were saved from abject humiliation by Columbia, which beat Pennsylvania to keep us and Penn tied for first in the league. And since we beat Penn both times out this year, we own the tiebreaker. Saved by the buzzer.

Final Ivy Standings
01 Brown (10-4, 19-8) – RPI: 43

07 Yale (5-9, 9-18) – RPI: 312
08 Princeton (4-10, 8-19) – RPI: 310

We drew the 13th seed in the New Orleans regional where we'd face (4) Charlotte in the first round.

NCAA TOURNAMENT

Code: Select all
DATE / TEAM                      SCORE            W/L RECORD       Team Leaders
3/17 – (n) (4) Charlotte         W 84-77          20-8             C. Anyan (17 pts 7 reb 2 ast 2 blk); J. Thompson (14 pts 4 reb 2 ast 2 blk)

I have to say I am blown away by how well our team has continued to come together when at times it seems no one gives us a chance to be successful. We stunned Charlotte, which would have been enough in any situation, but then pulled off an incredible win against a surprisingly tough (12) Texas Tech, making our first Sweet Sixteen. And then against all odds we took Louisville down to the wire, losing that game in the final two minutes. Until then there was a chance, which was more than anyone was giving us when we went into that game. We were supposed to be “happy to be there.”

With all our cogs back for one more season in the machine, imagine what we could do next year when more people might be paying us mind?

And no, I refuse to let the Mohamed Jones fiasco drag me down. I gave a talented kid a shot, and he wasn't able to handle the rigorous Ivy League academic load. He still worked hard for my program and I saw him trying to turn the academics around. It just wasn't happening. Fact is, four years ago this program would have probably helped him cheat his way through. And the fact that he worked hard, failed, and then simply had to exit the program, that shows how far we've come. And we didn't let it tank our progress either … this team continued to fight and exceeded all my expectations.

If anyone in the alumni association has a problem with that, I'll have words with them myself.

NCAA TOURNAMENT: (1) Louisville held off (11) Houston to win the title, 70-66.
NIT TOURNAMENT: (3) Florida beat out (5) Wichita State 70-65.
CBI TOURNAMENT: (2) NC-Wilmington blew past (2) Quinnipiac 76-64.

Michigan made the Elite Eight but was kept out of the Final Four by (2) Duke 77-75 in the Regional Semis. And it was Duke who would be upset by (11) Houston in the National Semis, 95-87, setting up that unlikely championship game scenario. Houston had to beat (6) Gonzaga 80-65, (14) Belmont 73-63, (7) Georgia Tech 82-70 and (8) Iowa State 66-53 to make the Final Four, so no one had expected them to beat Duke – it had been implied that they made the Final Four “the easy way.”

Well, Duke didn't think so after that beatdown. And Louisville sure didn't get off easy on the way to THEIR title either.

Alabama A&M in the Southwestern Conference came calling … intensely. But I was not interested. I have business to finish here in the Ivy League, and it's going to take a low level job in a major conference to pull me away.

We signed Tyler Rashaw, a 6'9” center from Fort Defiance High School in Fort Defiance, Virginia, to come play for us in the fall. He is ranked in the top 300 nationally and has killer defensive ratings to go with scoring, passing and inside shooting ability along with his overall top-notch athleticism. He should fit in with the rest of the team just fine as a freshman, even though he certainly won't start. We'll be a senior-heavy team he can learn a lot from before starting as a sophomore.

Re: Burned Ivy: The Brown Bears and a Recovery from Scandal

Postby jksander » Wed Mar 29, 2017 6:06 pm

October 2, 2021
This recruiting season is a flat-out bust. We've been fighting like mad for a half dozen key players in the region who all were stringing us along, apparently. They all signed elsewhere at the start of October, leaving us with five remaining players on our watch list, all with scholarship offers, and $500 left in our recruiting budget. It's over. Unless those players sign, we're flat-out fucked from a recruiting standpoint and I'll be hitting the transfer market again like a maniac next season, praying for a soft landing on the rebuild.

This year has a lot of pressure riding on it, considering also that the administration refused our requests for additional recruiting money while, for the second year, hamstringing us with a non-conference slate that has just TWO HOME GAMES and what has to be the most brutal road slate ever – we literally play most of the Big Ten on their courts before ever seeing an Ivy League team or our own court. They even have us playing Illinois on the road TWICE! (Someone must have gotten a big payoff for that one … )

I'm starting to think the administration does not have my back despite the work I've put in to build this program. Should I consider taking an offer elsewhere? Or is it worth more to show that I'm with Brown through and through, regardless of how we'll never truly be an “athletic school”?

I'll have some decisions to make in the fall for sure.

October 30, 2021
We at least have one freshman for next year's class. Keith Briggs, from Blairsville, Pennyslvania's Blairsville High, has a 3.4 GPA and will be a 6'7” forward for our program. And he'll get to play a lot I'm sure, right out of the gate. He'll need to build up his overall athleticism, because he's not that tough. He can shoot and score well, which has brought his stock up somewhat of late (he's currently ranked 175th in the latest rankings.) But I think he's overrated in that regard. As an overall player he's quite raw and will need to be molded into our system. Until I see what he can do in an actual game situation he's a complete wild-card.

November 6, 2021
We've added a second player to the incoming class: 6'11” power forward (who will become a center) Kurt Harrington from Somerset High in Somerset, Massachusetts has given us his verbal. He's a similar player to Briggs overall, though he can shoot well inside and out and has better overall athletic prospects. He's also a stronger handler and defender overall, not bad qualities to have in a center. Oddly, however, he can't block or rebound to save his life. We'll have work to do for sure if we're going to turn him into anything more than a role player. He does have a 3.2 GPA so at least we won't have to worry about his academic qualifications.

We're going to redshirt freshman Tyler Rashaw. We've also offered a scholarship to sophomore walk-on Omari Dotson.

IVY LEAGUE STANDINGS
01 #19 Brown (11-3, 22-5) – RPI: 3

07 Princeton (5-9, 7-20) – RPI: 292
08 Yale (5-9, 12-15) – RPI: 241

We drew the 5th seed in Columbus, and had to wait for the winner of a play-in game to see who our 12th seed opponent would be.
Dartmouth's RPI was not enough for an NCAA Tourney bid – they wound up as a third-seed in the NIT against Wyoming. They won that opening game 56-50.
They then faced 19-13 Nevada in the second round, advancing with a solid 70-58 victory.

We didn't make another Sweet Sixteen but we definitely made North Carolina sweat through the middle of the second half before they were able to pull away with their deeper lineup. I'm proud of this team and what they've accomplished together though – three consecutive 20-win seasons and trips to the NCAA tournament, and each year we've made it past the first round. For an Ivy program that's nothing to sneeze at!

Dartmouth's NIT run came to an end against the Billikens of St. Louis, as they were soundly defeated 43-62.

JOB PROSPECTS
I spoke with the athletic administrators and it was clear they were glad I had been able to dig the program out of the muck we'd been mired in at the start of my tenure, but despite my bringing Brown to the level of Dartmouth and to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet Sixteen, they weren't willing to discuss even minor improvements to our facilities or increases to funding to allow us to continue to compete. And I've grown tired of the alumni and local media constantly still acting as though my program and players are guilty of the sins of our forebears. Though I will forever be proud of the five years I spent at this university, it is clear they are not interested in becoming an athletic power. To which I say hey, good luck to them.

I, however, have proven myself and would like to face a challenge building a program where basketball wins matter and academics are still respected. A program where players in the local area are known for enjoying the game and I can recruit from a pool of talent worthy of competing for more Sweet Sixteens … or Final Fours … or even that mythical National Title.

I have accepted the job of Head Coach at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, effective immediately. They signed me to a three year contract worth $230,000 per year, and I'll be taking over a program that finished 19-13 (9-9 and 6th in the 10-team Horizon League). The team has made the last two NCAA Tournaments, losing both times in the first round, and they were in the CBI at the end of the 2019-20 campaign, also losing in the first round. They have not had a losing record during the last five years under Anthony Haskins, but have also failed to set themselves apart in the league. The AD here would like us to be regularly competing for a conference title, not just gain at-large bids and flame out in the first round.

My job is to do what I did at Brown and bring this program out of its rut. I think I am up to the challenge!

I hate to say it, but I feel the previous coach was mishandling the players he had on this team. There's a lot of excitement around the program now that I'm in charge, and I'm really looking forward to proving that these Crusaders can be a top-caliber team even before I put my own players into the system.

After a quick 4-0 start that saw us rise to #23 in the national rankings, we settled in to what turned out to be a surprisingly strong 7-2 start for what is essentially the same team that went 19-13 (9-9) last year. There's still a lot of basketball yet to play, but I'm feeling confident in this team and I think we can do well against the rest of the Horizon League field. We were picked to finish third in the conference this year, and I think we can do that or better. At the least, I'll be seriously disappointed if we're not in a position to make a postseason appearance this year.
