Walk On II

This one may not last long. I want to try a walk on dynasty with the highest Team Prestige team in the game. In DDS:CB 2016 that would be Kansas, 97. The head coach will have the kind of ratings necessary to actually get the job at Kansas.

It will be Promotion/Relegation. I want to see how long I can keep the team in Conf. A. I will let it sink to B, maybe to C, as I build, but after year one, all scholarship athletes will be cut.

Again, this may not work. If not, season 3 will probably wrap it up.

Here we go!

5/1: We hire two new assistants but keep our #1. We buy National and International gold.

8/7: PG Dan Call, #20, and C Gar Hall, #43, were nominated for the Norton Award.

9/18: No in season tourney.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

11/6: Okay, we’re going with 3 guards: Senior Dan Call will play more SG, junior Joe Dodd will play more PG, and senior Bo Tril will sub in at both.

At SF is soph Scot Clan.

Inside are junior Ry Bow and frosh Gar Hall. Junior Lew May and frosh Jay Henn will sub at 3, 4, and 5.

11/27: 4-0 in our first two weeks. 3 easy home wins and a 9 pointer on the road. Guards Call and Dodd, and C/PF Hall are leading us.

12/11: 3-1, 7-1, #4, RPI #7. We lost in OT at Stanford.

We’re getting very good guard play. Hall is terrific inside but other than him we’re weaker there than on the outside. Lew May is going to start at PF for Ry Bow.

3 more non-conf. games. One per week.

12/25: 2 easy wins at home. 9-1. #4, RPI #4.

1/1/’16: We end pre-conf. play at 10-1, #4, RPI #1. +16.4 PPG, +10.2 RBs, +4.1 TOs.

On to Conf. A play. All but 2 of our remaining games are against ranked teams, and the 2 that aren’t are against 8-3 UCLA.

1/15: 3-1. We lost by 1 at #5 North Carolina. C/PF Gar Hall is averaging 19.9 and 9.4. 15.1 and 8.1 assists for Dan Call.

1/29: 16-3, 6-2, #2, RPI #1. 4 way tie for 1st in Conf. A. +13 PPG, +8.2 RBs, +5.1 TOs. Gar Hall is #16, Dan Call #22 on the Norton list.

2/12: 3 of 4 on the road; we went 2-2. 18-5, 8-4, #4, RPI #1. Tied for 4th, 1 back of 1st.

2/26: 3-1. At the end of the regular season: 21-6, 11-5, #3, RPI #1. In a 3 way tie for 2nd, and the #2 seed in the conf. tourney. +12.6 PPG, +8.1 RBs, +4.3 TOs.

Memphis has 5 losses; everyone else in Div. I has 6 or more.

3/9: #10 seed, #21 ranked Kentucky won the play in. We beat them by 20 here.

3/10: 81-66. Hall had a great game, as did Dodd, Call, and Clan.

#3 seed, #1 ranked (Yep, really) Michigan ST, 22-6, 11-5, in the semis. We won by 10 at our place.

3/11: 89-78. 35, 9 for Hall.

#4 seed, #3 ranked Duke, 24-6, 11=5 for the Conf. A title. They won by 8 there.

3/12: 76-87. We shot 33.3% to their 48.5%. We had the edge in all other stats.

23-7, 11-5, #2, RPI #1. We should get a #1 seed.

#1 Midwest, #2 overall.

3/20: Beat #16 seed, 19-11 Eastern Washington 85-67, then #8 seed NC ST 88-86. That was an escape. Gar Hall hit the last shot, an 8 footer, and then blocked NC ST’s last shot.

#4 seed, #10 ranked Xavier, 24-9, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 87-71. We never trailed.

#3 seed, #11 ranked Maryland, 22-10 next. Beat them by 18 at our place.

3/25: 90-75. Hall and Call led the way to the Final Four.

We’ll play #6 seed, #20 ranked Kentucky, 21-12. Beat them by 20 and 15. Their SG is out with a broken ankle.

On the other side it’s #1 seed, #3 ranked Michigan ST vs. #3 seed, #8 ranked North Carolina.

4/1: 87-68. Hall, Dodd, May and Call led us. We led by as many as 19.

It’s #3 seed, #8 ranked North Carolina for the title. They beat us by 1, there.

4/3: 85-68 and the title. We never trailed. They doubled Hall, neutralizing him, but May, Clan and Tril stepped up. 38 RBs, 11 TOs.

4/4: Awards: Dan Call was Final Four MOP. I was national COY. In Conf. A Gar Hall made 1st team, Dan Call made 2nd. I was COY.

4/23: We ask for a facilities upgrade.

29-7, and a national title.

Let’s see how we do next year with all walk ons!

6/25: 4-2, 3.5-2, 3-1, 2.5-4, 2-4. This is probably not going to be competitive but I will go through the season and see what we get for walk ons next season.

9/18: We have a schedule.

10/2: 1st day of practice. Woe is us!

11/6: We looked good in our exhibitions. I think we’ll hold our own in pre-conf. play and get buried in conf. play. Here’s our lineup, 8 man rotation:

At guard, senior Tag Leis will get all the minute he can handle at SG. Juniors Dean Book, Gat Brax, and Dee Sand will share the Point.

Senior Ban Fire will start at SF and back up at SG.

Juniors Day Drey and Al Jeff will start inside. Junior Lane Ware will back up at SF, PF, and C.

11/27: 3-1. Opened with a 13 point loss at home, but then we won the next 3, the last on the road in OT. SF/PF Lane Ware leads us with 20.8 PPG. Our inside players are doing very well. Guard play is decent, 13.5 TOs.

We make a couple of adjustments.

12/11: 3-1, 6-2, RPI #82. A couple of changes at guard. We like where we are with SF, PF, and C.

12/25: 1-1, 7-3.

1/1/’17: We finish pre-conf. play 8-3, RPI #89. +0.8 PPG, +2.9 RBs, +1.9 TOs.

But it’s about to get ugly. The best teams in the country from here on.

1/15: 1-3, 9-6, RPI #61. We’re in way over our heads. Lost to #9 and #16 on the road, and to #3 here, but we beat #24 here. Still adjusting the lineups, especially at guard.

1/29: 1-3, 2-6, 10-9. RPI #74. Tied for 13th. We need to finish 12th not to be relegated. We lost the three road games, all to ranked teams, and won at home vs. unranked NC ST.

2/12: 1-3, 3-9, 11-12. RPI #107. In a 2 way tie for 15th, but 1 back of 12th.

2/26: 1-3, 4-12, 12-15. RPI #135. We finish last in conf. and will be relegated.

4/4: Awards: None.

4/23: 12-15, RPI #133. We expected this. Let’s see the quality of the walk ons we get next season, and whether we can compete in Conf. B.

6/25: 4-3, 3.5-5, 3-4, 2-1.

#19 in the preseason polls.

I think my all walk on team can compete. Going for it! BUT, we have exactly one non-senior on the roster, which is not good in the long term, if this dynasty were to have a long term.

9/18: Preseason NIT. Hoping for one win but…

10/2: 1st day of practice. Looks like we have some talent.

11/6: I was pleased with how we looked in the exhibition games. 7 man rotation.

At guard Dean Book is our PG with Ban Snow, and soph Roy Vine, our only non-senior sharing SG and back up PG minutes.

Bo Crow will start at SF and play some PF. Lane Ware will get almost half of the SF minutes.

Inside Al Jeff and Day Drey will start with Crow backing up.

Picked to finish 9th in Conf. B. I think we’ll do much better, maybe good enough to move up to Conf. A.

11/20: 2-1, #13. We made it to the semifinals of the Coaches Classic and lost by only 5 there.

65-53 over #25 Utah. 13, 11 for C/PF Day Drey. +12 RBs.

Then 97-87 over #9 Arizona. 29, 9, 2 for SF Lane Ware, 24, 2, 3 for PG Dean Book.

84-89 to Washington in the semis. Outside D did us in. They hit 13 threes. 17, 9 for Drey, 19 for sub guard Roy Vine who had 3 good games. 15 for Ware.

A couple of lineup tweaks, mostly more minutes for Lane Ware.

11/27: A 2-0 week. We’re 4-1, #9, RPI #16.

23, 4, 5, 3 for Book, 18 for sub guard Troy Vine, +7 RBs, +7 TOs in the road game.

20 for Vine, who will now start, 13, 2, 6, 2 for Book, +10 TOs, in the home game.

12/4: 2-0, 6-1, #9, RPI #11.

18 point road win. 23, 6 for Drey, 17, 3 for Vine. +10 TOs.

25 point home win. 24, 4, 3, 2 for Vine, 19 with 6 assists for Book. +8 RBs.

12/11: 2-0, 8-1, #8, RPI #4 (WAY higher than it should be).

10 point win at Drake. 17, 8 for Drey, 19 for Vine, 13, 9, 2, 2 for PF Al Jeff.

14 point home win. 28, 4, 3 for Vine, 15, 3, 10 for Book. +14 TOs.

12/25: 2-1, #10, RPI #18.

Beat Memphis here, 66-52. 22, 5, 2, 2 for Vine, 14, 4, 5, 5 for Book.

Lost by 10 at Hofstra. 16 each for Vine and Ware, +9 RBs, but we didn’t shoot or defend well.

6 point win here over Wisc.-GB. Good team effort, +8 RBs.

1/1/2018: All 5 in double figures in a 24 point home win.

We finish pre-conf. play at 11-2, #10, RPI #18. +12.1 PPGs, +4.2 RBs, +4.3 TOs.

1/15: 1-3 start to conf. play but 3 were on the road. We beat #12 Wake Forest at home. 2 point loss at Marquette.

Vine continues to lead us; he had 4 very strong games.

12-5, 1-3, #14, RPI #21.

3 of the next 4 are at home.

1/29: 3-1. 15-6, 4-4, #15, RPI #12. In a 4 way tie for 8th in Conf. B.

Starting PF Al Jeff broke a hand after the LSU win. Out for the season. Bo Slay and Al Wood will get his minutes.

2/12: 3-1, 18-7, 7-5, #13, RPI #15. In a 5 way tie for 4th, 1 back of 1st.

2/26: 3-1 to finish the regular season at 21-8, 10-6, #13, RPI #14, tied for 3rd, which means we move back up to Conf. A. +6.6 PPG, +6.1 RBs, +0.3 TOs.

Roy Vine leads us with 20.3 PPG. 12.7 for C/PF Day Drey, 12.6 for SF Lane Ware, 12.1 for PG Dean Book.

3/9: #5 seed, #19 ranked Missouri in the quarter final round. We won by 5 at our place. Their starting SG and leading scorer and best defender is out.

3/10: 74-69. 19, 8, 2 for Ware, 16 for Vine, 11, 3, 3 for Book. We hit 12 threes, including three in the last minute. We scored the last 6 points in the game.

#1 seed, #6 ranked UConn, 24-7, 11-5, in the semis. They beat us by 20 there.

3/11: 57-72. We were never in it. 13, 7, 3 for Drey, 16, 3 for Vine, but 21 TOs.

22-9, 10-6, #13, RPI #13 going to the selection show.

3/12: #4 Midwest. We play San Diego, 23-7.

3/16: 82-65. 5 in double figures. +8 RBs.

#12 seed Western KY, 19-13, beat #5 Tennessee. They’re next.

3/18: 74-63. 20 for Vine. +10 RBs.

#1 seed, #6 ranked Arizona, 27-6, in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 10 in the Coaches Classic but that was a LONG time ago. Their starting PG is out with a broken leg.

3/23: 74-89. 21, 5, 2 for Roy Vine, our only returning player.

4/4: Awards: Day Drey made Conf. B 1st team. Roy Vine made 2nd team. I was conf. COY.

4/23: 24-10, 10-6. For seasons 2 and 3: 36-25, .590.

5/1: 4-2, 3.5-6, 3-1, 2-2, 1.5-1.

#21 preseason. We should have advanced to Conf. A, and for some reason we did not.

9/18: No in season tournament.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

11/6: Here’s the lineup: Returning junior Roy Vine is our #1 guard and will play both spots. Also starting is senior Curt Hart. Senior Gan Sims will back up. We have a couple of other guards who could fill in well.

Junior Kip Wolk is at SF.

Inside we’ll start senior Marc Loan and frosh Ad Jonn, with senior Tim Cook in reserve. We’re not as deep inside. An injury might make us go with a three guard set up. We’re picked 10th in Conf. B.

11/27: 4-0 start. Not great teams, and 3 at home, but we’ll take it. #9 in the polls. 4 players averaging in double figures led by Roy Vine’s 21.0.

12/8: 7-0. Starting POG Curt Hart sprained a toe. Out for 9 days. Gan Sime will start, Bro Card will back up.

12/17: Hart is back but he’s lost the starting spot to Gan Sims.

1/1/’19: 11-0, #7, RPI #25, to end pre-conf. play. +22.0 PPG, +0.9 RBs, +9.0 TOs. Roy Vine is averaging 21.6, and our other 4 starters (including new starter Gan Sims) are all in double figures.

1/15: 3-1, 14-1. 2 were at home, 2 away, and 3 of the teams were ranked. I call that a good start.

1/29: 2-2, 16-3, 5-3, #9, RPI #11. We’re in a 4 way tie for 3rd, 1 back of 1st.

2/12: 18-5, 7-5. We split again this week. We’re in a 3 way tie for 5th, 1 back of 2nd, 2 back of 1st.

4 to play. 2 on the road, but one is against an unranked team. We need to go 3-1.

2/26: 4-0. We finish 21-6, 10-6, #10, RPI #8, tied for 3rd, #4 seed. +9.7 PPG, +2.1 RBs, +2.8 TOs.

3/9: We play #21 ranked Auburn in the round of 8.

3/10: 89-68. Vine and SF Kip Wolk lit it up, and Sims had 11 assists.

#1 seed, #2 ranked Wake Forest in the semis.

3/11: 77-70! Huge upset! 24, 9 for Vine. +8 RBs. We played really good D late.

#2 seed, #6 ranked LSU, 24-5, 11-5 for the title.

3/12: Not tonight. 60-78.

2 seed? 3 seed? We’re 23-7, #8, RPI #7, made it to the title game in the 2nd best conf.

#2 South. We play NJIT, #15, 21-9.

3/16: 83-65. 29, 4, 5 for Vine. +16 TOs.

#10 seed Arkansas, 18-14, in the 2nd round.

3/18: 88-78. 25, 6 for PF Marc Loan, 23, 9, 8, 2, 2 for Gan Sims. 48 RBs,

#11 seed UNLV, 21-10, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 90-96. Horrible D, 24 TOs.

4/4: Awards: Roy Vine made 2nd team all conf.

4/23: I think I’ve made my point regarding walk ons. Just want to see what we get for players next season then we’re done here.

61-33, .649 overall.

We’re back in Conf. A.

June 25: 4-1, 3.5-3 3-1, 2.5-2, 2-5.

We did pretty well with just walk ons!
