The 1600 Club

This dynasty will build a team using recruits and transfers with 1600 or higher Overall rating. I will not recruit until 11/6, when ratings stabilize.

We’ll go with Promotion/Relegation, and start in Conference V. The objective is to see if we can climb, and if so, how far. We expect to have all 1600+ players by year 2.

5/1: Head Coach Jim Dandy here at Nebraska-Omaha. My A. D. absolutely refuses to give us the resources we need to go after recruits. We’ll need to find hidden treasures sitting at the bottom of the heap.

I live in Omaha, have all my life. I intend to stay with this team, for better or for worse.

I put together a staff and start doing the things that need to be done. In looking at video we don’t have a lot of talent returning, and most of that talent is in the Senior class.

9/18: We’ve been checking on recruits but we’re taking no action until 11/6.

We have a schedule- a weak one.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

Picked to finish 10th in conf. V.

11/6: 1st day of recruiting. We’ll try to at least look at everyone from 1601 up.

9 man rotation: Starting at guard are senior Ted Blue and soph Nick Carr, with junior Ben Craw and soph Nik Malk backing up.

Junior Rash Penn starts at SF.

Al Gard looks like our best player. He’ll start at C. The other minutes at 3, 4, and 5 will be split among junior Dee Rigg, junior Sean Blar, and soph Boo Whit.

11/20: We opened at home with an 85-66 win over Samford. 16, 6, 2, 3 for SF Rash Penn, 14, 6, 4, 2 for guard Ted Blue, 12, 4, 8 for guard Nick Carr, and 14, 2, 2 for sub big guy Sean Blar.

Then it was 61-74 vs. Idaho ST, here. We were outshot and out rebounded (-10). The inside game, particularly regarding fouls, is the problem. Al Gard has played 25 total minutes in 2 games.

It’s early and we’re still tweaking the lineup.

(Author’s note: I set this coach’s final ratings at either 80 or 85 in all categories. Initial ratings were 20 or 25 except for Scouting, which I believe still progresses very slowly.)

11/27: We beat 2-0 Binghamton 82-70 here. 26, 9 for Al Gard, who finally stayed out of foul trouble. 10, 7, 6 for Blue, 14, 2, 2, 2 for Carr, 9, 7 for Rigg. We were better inside.

Then our first road game, 75-84 at MD Eastern Shore. 17, 9 for Gard, 16, 8, 2, 2, 3 for Rash Penn, 13 for inside sub Boo Whit, but little to nothing outside. Fouls were a big problem again.

12/4: 80-79 vs. 1-1 Prairie View at home in the 1st close game of the season. Ted Blue hit a 17 footer for the win. Rash Penn, who has been easily our best player, had 27, 6, 2. 11, 9 for Gard, 12, 6, 2 for inside sub Bid Davy, and 13, 2, 4 for
Ted Blue.

Then 65-70 at 2-3 Cal-Davis. The refs beat us. 4 of our starters wound up with 4, the 5th, plus a sub, fouled out. 30 against us, including my 1st T, 17 against them. They went to the line 18 more times. 18, 8 for Gard, 15, 5, 2 for Penn. An ugly game with all the stops and starts. We had 24 TOs, but they had 22.

12/11: 76-67 over 5-1 Monmouth, here. 20, 7 for Penn, 16, 11 for Gard, 13 for sub guard Ben Craw. 35 RBs, 12 TOs.

65-77 at 3-4 Morgan ST. Major foul trouble for Gard again, and we need him in there.

We’re at 4-4, RPI #180.

12/18: A one game week. 76-71 over NJIT here. 25, 6, 3, 2 for Penn, 12, 8 for Fint, who was just given his shot due to underperformance by most of our bigs.

12/25: 67-83 at TX Rio Grande Valley. 23 TOs (-10). Poor D, too many fouls. 20, 5 for Penn, 15, 5, 2, 3 for Gard.

1/1/’17: We end the pre-conf. season with an 84-66 win over Chicago ST here. Except for rebounding (-5) we played very well. 20 each for Penn and Blue, 17, 5 for Gard (but he fouled out in 19 min.), 13, 6, 3, 5, 2 for Fint.

6-5, RPI #221, +0.8 PPG, -1.2 RBs, +1.1 TOs.

1/8: 2-0 start top conf. play. 8-5 overall. RPI #171.

75-56 over SIU-Evansville here. Good play, esp. on D. 22, 5 for Penn, 18, 9, 5 for Gard, 12 for Blue.

74-63 at Seattle. We were down 16 at the half and out scored them 50-23 in the 2nd. No idea where THAT came from. 21, 5 for Gard, 3 others in double figures. When Gard stays out of foul trouble we do well.

1/15: 2 wins. 10-5, 4-0, RPI#129. Alone in 1st, but 5 teams are 1 back, another 4 are 2 back.

71-66 in OT at North Alabama. Close all the way. 22, 6, 2, 4 for Penn, 13, 6 for Blue.

73-55 over Kennesaw ST here. 18, 6 for Gard, 16, 6, 5, 2 for Blue, 13, 7, 5, 2 for Ben Craw, who is now starting for Nick Carr.

In the Kennesaw ST game Josh Fint broke his wrist. He’s out for the season. That’s a tough one for us.

1/22: 1-1, 11-6, 5-1, RPI #123. In a 2 way tie for 1st.

Lost by 22 at No. KY. 27, 8, 2,, 5 for Gard, 23 for Penn, 15, 5 for sub Bid Davy, but lousy D.

68-57 over Grand Canyon here. Good D, +6 TOs.

1/29: 0-2. 11-8, 5-3, RPI #167. All the way down in a 6 way tie for 4th, 1 back of 1st.

Lost by 7 at UMass Lowell. Poor D, especially late.

Lost by 10 at home to Abilene Cretin. Poor 2nd half D again. We were beat up inside.

2/5: 2-0. 13-8, 7-3, RPI #121, in a 3 way tie for 2nd, 1 back.

73-69 at Incoherent Word. We almost blew a 22 point lead but we hung on- barely. Good games from Penn, Craw, Blue, Rigg. They went to the line 11 times more than we did.

95-77 vs. Houston Bopfest here. We never trailed. 21, 4, 4, 2 for Penn, 22 for Gard, 14, 5, 2 for Davy. +12 TOs.

2/12: 1-1. Won on the road, lost at home. We blew an opportunity. 14-9, 8-4, RPI #115. In a 4 way tie for 2nd, 1 back.

24, 7, 2 for Gard in the 4 point road win. 17, 7, 3 for Davy, 14 each for Blue and Penn. +10 RBs.

Lost by 6 at home. We shot 35.4%, they shot 56.6%.

2/19: 2 road wins. 16-9, 10-4, RPI #106, in a 2 way tie for 2nd, 1 back.

6 point win at South Dakota. We had 8 more free throws but we were 29-38, they were a terrible 13-30. Blue, Penn, and Davy led us.

4 point win at SIU-Edwardsville. 17, 6, 4, 4 for Penn. Lots of players had good numbers on O.

The last 2 regular season games are at home, the last with the #1 team in the conf.

2/26: 2-0, 18-9, 12-4, RPI #82, and we finish in a 2 way tie for 1st with the #1 seed. +3.7 PPG, +0.2 RBs, +2.1 TOs.

80-69 over Seattle. 24, 9, 2, 6, 4 for Gard, 27, 5, 3 for Penn, 15 for Craw. +12 TOs.

80-64 over No. Alabama. 18, 6 for Davy, 15 each for Gard, Blue, and Penn. +7 TOs.

3/2: #8 seed Kennesaw ST, 15-13, won the play in. They’re up.

3/3: 25 for Gard, 15 each for Craw and Blue. +7 Rbs.

#4 seed Incoherent Word in the semis.

3/4: 57-67. We didn’t play very well. We lost it at the line where they went 17-21, we went 5-6, but our guys were fouling. I was upset about lots of no calls on the other team but frankly, we didn’t play very well.

Will we play again? Doubtful. 19-10, 12-4, RPI is now 102. Being in the lowest conf., I think we’re done.

3/12: RPI is now #93.

We’re done. Now to clear the roster. Hope to fill it with 1600+ guys. If they say no, it’s walk ons.

3/26: Got one, SG Lou Swan, #1680.

4/4: Awards: Senior Al Gard makes Conf. V 1st team. That’s it. We win the conf. and 1 guy. How did they leave Penn out?

4/16: Got 2 more, C Al Tubb, #1646, and C Tim Tice, #1689.

4/23: One more, SF Ty Hess, #1696. Signed 4 recruits? Honestly, I never expected to have trouble signing guys in the 1600-1800 range. Weird.

We ask for a facilities upgrade. Nope.

19-10, 12-4, finished 1st in conf. made it to the semis. Should be in U next year.

5/1: A new season.

6/25: We don’t go after transfers because at least this year most of them are ranked.

6/26: I’m going to start recruiting earlier; right from today. BUT I won’t sign anyone until 11/6 so as to get only 1600 and above recruits.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

11/6: We offer to 4 PGs, 1 SG, 1 PF, 3 Cs.

The lineup: Senior Mel Bill plays a lot at PG and some at SG. Senior Rak Geld plays mostly at SG. Senior Gar Robb and soph Ral Davy back up at PG.

Frosh Lou Swan starts at SF.

Inside frosh Will Lube will get all the minutes he can handle, mostly at C, junior Cory Trap plays all three inside spots, starting at PF, and senior Matt Krim backs up at PF. There are a couple waiting in the wings.

Horrible schedule, our first 9 are on the road.

1/8: 2-0 start to conf. U play. 9-5, 2-0, RPI #73.

79-55 vs. Tx Rio Grande here. 28, 4, 4, 3 for Trap, 15, 6, 2 for Bill, 10 RBs for Lube. +16 RBs, +5 TOs.

Then we finally WON a close one on the road, 72-70 at So. Carolina ST. Trap hit an 8 footer at the buzzer. He had 15, 7, 4. 9 guys scored between 15 and 5.

2 on the road this week.
1/15: We split this week. 10-6, 3-1, RPI #92. In a 4 way tie for 2nd.

73-72 at Howard. We blew a 12 point lead late, came back, fell behind, and then won it on Rak Geld’s last second three. He had 18, 4, 4, but 8 TOs. +6 RBs, -7 TOs.

75-87 at FL Gulf Coast. 24, 5, 3 but 7 TOs for Geld. This is getting to be a problem.

1/22: 81-79 here vs. Lipscomb. We were down 15 early in the 2nd. Geld, Trap, and Lube led us.

We were crushed at IFPW, 42-63. It was a night when nothing went right, especially on O. 22.5% shooting.

11-7, 4-2, RPI #74. 1 back, in a 5 way tie for 2nd.

1/29: Split 2 again this week. 12-8, 5-3, RPI #91, alone in 5th. +1.3 PPG, +3.1 RBs, even on TOs.

We beat UL Monroe 69-59 here. 21, 5 for Bill, 2, 13, 7 for Lube, 12, 6, 3, 2 for Trap. +11 RBs.

63-69 at Incoherent Word. 15 each for Geld and Trap. We lost it at the line; they had 25 shots, we had 10.

2/5: Great week, 2 very close wins. 14-8, 7-3, RPI #72, in a 2 way tie for 3rd.

71-70 over Wofford here. Back and forth all night. In the end we scored the last 4 points, the winner on 2 free throws by Will Lube, his only points of the game. 15 each for Bill and Geld. +10 TOs.

79-78 in OT at North Alabama. 21 lead changes, 10 ties. 20, 4, 3 for Rak Davy, 19 for Geld, 12 for sub Lou Swan. Great bench work. We won this one outside, 12 threes to their three.

6 to play, 2 at home this week, 2 on the road next week, then the last 2 at home.

2/12: 2 home wins. 16-8, 9-3, RPI #67. In a 2 way tie for 2nd, 2 back of 1st, 2 up on 4th, with 4 to play.

73-70 over Abilene Cretin here. Never more than 7 points between the 2 teams. 23, 2, 3, 2, 2 for Geld, 14, 3, 3 for Bill.

74-57 over Northern Colorado. This was an easy one, which we needed. 26, 3 for Bill, 20, 3 for Trap, 10, 8, 2, 2, 3 for Lube.

2 on the road this week. We’d love a split.

2/19: We got the split. 17-9, 10-4, RPI #69, alone in 3rd, 1 back of 1st, 2 up on 4th.

66-71 at Lamar. We got down by as many as 17 and couldn’t make it up. 19, 5, 2 for Geld.

72-66 over TX Rio etc., there. 14, 9, 4 for Geld, 13, 4 for Sey, 11, 7 for Trap, 10, 3, 2 for Bill. -11 TOs, but +15 RBs.

2 to go, both at home. Both teams have losing records.

2/26: 2 wins. We end the regular season 19-9, 12-4, RPI #62, in a 3 way tie for 1st, #2 seed. +2.4 PPG, +2.8 RBs, even on TOs.

83-69 over So. Carolina ST. 26, 14 for Trap, 19, 6, 5 for Geld. +7 RBs, never trailed.

87-83 over Howard. We led most of the way but they made a late charge. 4 was as close as it got. 20, 6, 6 for Geld, 22, 4, 5, 2, 3 for Bill.

3/1: #7 seed Lipscomb, 15-13, 8-8, in the quarter final round of the Conf. U tournament.

3/2: 52-63. We were awful. You don’t win when you score 52. -16 TOs.

We’re probably finished for the season. Given the conf. we’re in we needed at least oen win, probably 2. We’ll see.

3/12: 19-10, 12-4, RPI #85.

#1 seed, CBI East. We play Smary’s, 17-14, Conf. I, Let’s see if we can take advantage of this opportunity.

3/14: 71-70. We were down 11 with 6:22 to go. 9 guys scored, 8 of them between 6 and 13 points. +7 RBs.

#4 seed Eastern Washington, 17-12, Conf. R,in the 2nd round.

3/21: 67-79. 18, 5, 3 for Trap, 3 others in double figures.

Now it comes down to how many recruits we land.

3/26: This is an “early late” date when recruits sign. None did.

4/4: Awards: I get conf. COY. Senior guard Rak Geld makes 1st team, junior PF Cory Trap makes 2nd.

4/16: Well! 3 sign: SG Caa Mera, #1693, PG Pi Hunt, Juco, #1759, PG Coe Hii, Juco, #1682.

4/23: We get 2 more, C Matt Jen, #1688, and C Dee Del, #1660. That gives us 9 scholarship athletes next season, 2 PGs, 1 SG, 2 SFs, 4 Cs. So we’ll play.

We ask for a budget increase. We get $4000. I’ll take it.
