Program Expectations
Expectations are high. Nothing less than improving the school’s prestige and continuing in the “Butler Way” will be considered a successful season. We’ll be expected to post a winning season, preferably at least 20 wins, which would give us a shot at a top three conference finish and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Those two Final Four trips under Brad Stevens are fading in the rearview, but now that we’re in the Big East the boosters are working harder than ever to make sure we’re not seen as “that tiny school that plays with the mid-majors” anymore. We still play good, honest basketball but we’re playing with the top teams because we are one. Time to prove it!

Signing Update: International Forward Stephen Taylor from Sydney, Australia, commits to Butler!
Shooting Guard Jovan Jackson from Bloomfield’s Eastern Green High becomes first Indiana recruit of ’17-’18 class

6’6” small forward Stephen Taylor, a top 20 international recruit averaging 19.9 ppg 11.6 rpg 2.6 apg and 2.6 bpg has committed to join the Butler Bulldogs in the 2017-18 season! A 17-year-old with seemingly unlimited upside, this kid’s a top scorer, passer and rebounder who can defend and block with just about anyone in this year’s class. Not much from outside, he’s also going to need to bulk up from an athletic standpoint to compete in the bruising Big East. But Butler did well with this one. He’s definitely a player you build a solid recruiting class around! 6’1” guard Jovan Jackson, from Bloomfield, Ind.’s Eastern Green High was ranked in the top 100 early in the year but since has fallen to the mid 400s and off most top schools’ radars. He has, however, stayed on Butler’s radar due to his ‘A’ Athleticism and ‘B’ overall potential, as well as his ability to shoot from outside (‘A’) and his ‘B’ rated scoring, passing and ball handling, all of which should make him a contender for minutes as a freshman. He averaged 17.5 points per game for Eastern Greene’s class 2A program that went 16-9 last year, the team’s best record since going to Regionals in 2012. With him in his senior season they hope to win Regionals for only the second time in school history. That’s the kind of big-fish small-pond ‘Butler Way’ player we’re always looking for.

Two scholarships left to fill!

Signing Update: Butler Adds a top-50 center in Syracuse, Ind. JuCo Dan Gilbert!
Rounds out class with PG Carl Scott, 4.0 GPA, of Lincoln, Mich’s Alcona Community High

Though 6’0” PG Carl Scott won’t light up most schools’ recruiting boards, the top 300 player nationally is a notable scorer and outside shooter who has enough potential to be a role player with the team and, if he plays his cards right, he should fit in well with the Butler system and prove he’s better than his falling recruiting stock. The bright spot on this final major week of visits is signee Dan Gilbert, a JuCo transfer of questionable academic standing (2.1 GPA after two years of junior college) who is ranked 50th nationally and brings a 6’10” 230 pound frame to Indianapolis in the fall. A solid ‘B’ overall on potential despite only having two years eligibility left, he’s a top notch rebounder and blocker and can shoot the ball brilliantly inside and out, with the ability to find his own shot in just about any situation. He should fit in fine offensively, and should anchor the starting rotation right away.

Coaches Classic Regional Quarterfinals
Butler Bulldogs (0-0) vs. #5 Kentucky (0-0)

In San Juan we were severely outmatched by top-seeded Kentucky early, falling behind 8-22 against the Wildcats with 10:43 to go in the first half and though we fought hard through the remainder, we went into the half trailing 37-50. We opened the second half on a 6-0 run, fueled by strong three-point shooting, but though we pulled within six points briefly it was impossible for us to keep pace with Kentucky’s deep bench. With 15:40 to go in the game they’d reopened the gap, leading 48-63, and we knew our moment to fight back was waning. And Kentucky closed that window tightly, shutting us down adroitly as we lost our season opener 80-95.

Honorable Mentions: Tavaras Watkins (15 pts 6 reb 2 blk); Danny Adams (15 pts 1 reb)

Butler (0-1) @ Indiana (0-1)

Indiana lost a tough one in the Coaches Classic to Creighton, 79-82, so we headed into Assembly Hall facing a Hoosier squad licking its wounds and ready to prove something. We kept it close early but they broke it wide open midway; with 9:09 to go in the first half we trailed Indiana 14-27 and by the time we stumbled into the break we were in a deep hole 29-49. We never recovered, and this one became a rout. Indiana won with ease, 103-57.

Player of the Game: Tavaras Watkins (17 pts 3 reb)
Honorable Mentions: Russell Harris (11 pts 1 reb 3 ast); Jerry Walter (8 pts 8 reb 2 blk)

November 24, 2016
IPFW (1-1) @ Butler (0-2)

We needed a strong start tonight, and against the Mastadons of IPFW we came out kicking, building a solid 17-9 advantage with 14:18 to go in the first half. We held them off nicely the remainder of the first half and were in firm control at the break, 46-36. Tavaras Watkins continued to be our on-the-floor leader, holding the team together as we put IPFW away for good early in the second half, up 56-40 with 12:43 to play. From there it was a matter of playing defense and letting the pieces fall where they needed to. We won this one 82-61, finally getting our elusive first win of the year!

Player of the Game: Tavaras Watkins (19 pts 7 reb 3 ast 4 stl 1 blk)
Honorable Mentions: Russell Harris (15 pts 4 reb 1 ast 1 stl); Damion Phillips (12 pts 6 reb 2 ast 4 stl 2 blk)

Butler (1-2) @ #1 Kansas (6-0)

We saw this as a potential résumé builder early on, but at this point we’re looking at it more as a “let’s get through this” situation. With a top class coming in next fall, we’re a team fighting to reach expectations while battling against a brutal schedule. Kansas jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first five minutes, and the refereeing was so outrageous early on I actually got thrown out of the game midway through the half for daring to call them out on their bullshit. We went into the half trailing 26-45, and lost the game by a 63-90 margin. We flew home disappointed, and I was frustrated more by how I let myself get sucked in by the narrative. I vowed to my players I’ll keep a cooler head the remainder of the season and not let this kind of thing happen again.

Player of the Game: Russell Harris (18 pts 2 reb 1 blk)
Honorable Mention: Jerry Walter (11 pts 7 reb 2 stl 2 blk)

Indiana State (1-3) @ Butler (1-3)

I knew when I took on the job that I'd be inheriting a rebuilding situation, something I've dealt with strongly in recruiting. But that doesn't make it easier to come into this game with a 1-3 record, even if our RPI is in the top 100 due to strength of schedule. We were strong on defense early on against Indiana State, putting together a 10-7 lead with 11:02 to go in the first half, But we struggled offensively and were unable to put much together to hold the Sycamores back. Down 10-14 with 7:35 remaining in the half, we lost our nerve and let the Sycamores fire off a 7-0 unanswered stretch, before we flew into motion and answered with a 12-0 run of our own to knot things at 22 with three minutes left, tying on a Russell Harris three that set the place on fire! Watkins would keep us in this, tying it 28-28 with :22 to go in the first half, and without his eight first-half points, most of which came in clutch situations, there would have been no way we'd trail by only two at the break, down just 28-30.

Tavaras Watkins scored our first points of the second half, putting us within four of the Sycamores, down 30-34 with 16:59 remaining in this contest. He would play hero once more with 13:42 to go as he nailed a triple that put us up 35-34 on Indiana State, our first lead by any means other than free-throws since the early minutes of the game. The game became a back-and-forth battle from there, as Harris and Watkins worked together to at least give us a chance. Harris nailed a three with 9:03 remaining to put us ahead 43-41, and a Nathan King dunk made it 47-42 with 7:29 to go, our largest lead to that point in the game! From there our focus was methodical, as we dismantled them as carefully as possible en route to a strong defensive win, 62-49! We closed the game on a 12-2 run, which was particularly heartening considering how slow our shooters were to find their touch.

Player of the Game: Russell Harris (15 pts 2 reb 2 ast 2 stl 1 blk)
Honorable Mentions: Tavaras Watkins (14 pts 2 reb 1 ast 1 stl); Josh Lynch (6 pts 2 reb 2 stl)

December 5, 2016
Belmont (5-2) @ Butler (2-3)

We briefly led 3-2 early in this one, then Belmont took control and we spent the next eight minutes slugging it out to control this game and recover from an early five point deficit. Nathan King proved himself to be a strong dunker yet again as he scored two on a fast break with 11:20 to play, putting us ahead 11-10 on a Belmont team that could shoot in streaks and then go cold for minutes on end. Sound familiar? King's dunk was the start of a 10-2 run for us, and a Danny Adams jumper with 6:38 to play in the first half made it a 24-14 Butler lead. Belmont fought desperately to keep it competitive but failed, as we had our hottest shooting half of the season thus far, leading 41-30 at the break on 52.2% shooting from the field! We opened the first two minutes of the second half on an 11-2 run and sealed their fate, winning this one easily by a 64-52 margin.

Northern Arizona (0-4) @ Butler (3-3)

Our last home game before having to face top-20 ranked Notre Dame, this one pitted us against winless NAU and the Lumberjacks came out swinging early, building a 6-11 lead on us early, taking advantage of our poor overall shooting to dominate much of the first half, up 19-25 with 7:44 to play before halftime. We didn't quit, though, fighting through a tough stretch to barrel back into this one, stealing a 30-29 lead on a John Perry jumper with just 3:49 remaining in the half! We went into halftime clinging to a 38-36 lead knowing we were going to need to sharpen our game if we were going to pull this out and maintain our win-streak.

NAU tied us up 43-43 with 17:09 to go in the game, but Brett Hart nailed a brilliant three-pointer that banked its way in, putting us back on top 46-43 with 15:58 to play, and Harris and Watkins each added threes of their own to extend the lead to eight, up 54-46 with 13:32 remaining. We shoot well when we want to, and McPherson sunk the nails in with a three of his own with 8:02 to go that gave us a 70-53 advantage over the hapless Lumberjacks, who were suddenly staring down the barrel of 0-5. Our bench played extended minutes, and Danny Adams wound up in double-figures, proving our stronger defenders have the power to be team leaders on offense too when they put their minds to it! We'd win this one in the end 87-72.

Butler (4-3) @ #18 Notre Dame (6-2)

Notre Dame came out firing on all cylinders, scoring the first eight points, but we battled back and held as firm as we could as we fought to within four points, down 7-11 with 12:48 to go in the first half. But they had us outmatched on both ends of the court and it showed quickly. We struggled to keep up, trailing 11-23 with 8:24 remaining in the half, though we followed with a 7-2 run to at least keep a door open. Then Notre Dame put up an 11-0 run of their own to slam that door in our faces. By halftime we trailed 30-45, having scored the last five points of the half to even make it that respectable. We fought hard to the end but lost this one in blowout form, 60-87, as we fell back to 4-4.

North Alabama (6-3) @ Butler (4-4)

Our final non-conference game of the season, and we're 4-0 on our home court, 0-4 on neutral or road courts. So at this point every game at Hinkle Fieldhouse counts for a ton, and we came into this one ready to take care of business. And after early moment hiccups, with North Alabama leading 0-1 on a single free-throw, we took firm control, launching our way to a 12-4 lead with 15:10 remaining in the half. And we blew them out of the water from there, leading 31-11 with 7:36 still to play in the first half! We led 44-25 at the break and cruised to victory in the end, 86-67, finishing our pre-Big East season with a 5-4 record.

The conference looks solid this year, though none of us are ranked as of yet. Xavier and St. John's made it through the pre-conference slate with 7-3 and 7-2 records respectively; the Musketeers' RPI is 17th, while St. John's has the 34th-best RPI in the country. Eight of ten teams in the conerence have top-100 RPIs; ours (30th) is ranked 2nd at this point despite our 5-4 start. No one in the conference has a losing record, though we and Marquette, each 5-4, are tied for the worst non-conf start. Seton Hall (6-3, #132 RPI) and Georgetown (7-4, #102 RPI) are at the bottom based purely on strength of schedule, but I suspect all that will even out as we start bruising on each other. We'll soon know who the best teams truly are.

December 26, 2016
Providence (6-3, 0-0) @ Butler (5-4, 0-0)

We started out as poorly as I've seen at home this year, letting the Friars rush out to a 7-16 lead on us five minutes in, after holding them tough for the first ninety seconds in a quick start. We shot well, however, and were able to keep up with them in a shootout. But defensively we lacked tenacity and I was frustrated to see us not willing to fight hard on both ends with consistency. With 8:20 to go we trailed 20-23, I got a bit too animated coming off the bench late in the half and got called for a technical, and things went downhill from there. We played like crap down the stretch and went into the half trailing Providence 36-52. And I was about ready to blow my goddamned top.

We clawed our way back to within nine with 12:13 to go in the game, trailing the Friars 47-56. Tavaras Watkins nailed a three to make it a 50-57 game with 11:39 remaining, but we collapsed again and let the Friars run out to a 52-66 lead with just 8:45 left on the clock. We'd get as close as six late before crumbling under our own ineptitude. We lost 63-75 and it might as well have been by 50.

Player of the Game: Tavaras Watkins (25 pts 2 reb 2 ast 2 stl 2 blk)
Honorable Mention: Damion Phillips (6 pts 11 reb 2 stl 1 blk)

December 29, 2016
Butler (5-5, 0-1) @ Villanova (6-4, 0-1)

Tavaras Watkins opened things up with a three-pointer early, and Demond Anderson banked in a sweet jumper to tie things up 5-5 in a tight battle with Villanova early, 16:04 remaining in the first half of this one. But 'Nova went on a 7-2 run and opened things up over the next two minutes, and we battled to keep it close. Jerry Walter threw down a monstrous dunk with 11:15 remaining that put us within three, down 12-15, but they were firing on all cyllinders and kept us off our game. With 9:13 to go we trailed 15-22, and we went into the break tailing the Wildcats 26-43. From there? Blowout City. We lost 51-85 and proved that we flat-out can't win on the road.

This is going to be a long conference season …

Player of the Game: Tavaris Watkins (9 pts 2 ast 1 stl)

January 2, 2017
St. John's (7-4, 0-2) @ Butler (5-6, 0-2)

We played like **** to start this one … there's no way around it! Trailing 4-15 on your own court five minutes in, that's ****. But our strong free-throw shooting and good scoring from Jerry Walter and Damion Phillips at least kept us within striking distance, down 17-21 with 10:45 remaining in the half. Then they rattled off two threes and it was like a kick to the balls. The way we played the rest of the half says we're the worst team in the Big East, and I can't find a way to get through to these guys that if we get on a poor shooting stretch, we have to be able to DEFEND.

We went into halftime down 36-54 and we went on to lose 62-88. Harris and Watkins were both completely ineffective for much of the night, our TEAM LEADERS, which blows my mind. They left this game wide open to be stolen, and seemed to do nothing to fight it. I plan to experiment accordingly … if you're not putting out effort, you may not keep your starting spots. No one's safe if we can't find ways to win!

Player of the Game: Damion Phillips (17 pts 4 reb 1 ast 1 stl)
Honorable Mentions: Jerry Walter (13 pts 8 reb 2 ast 2 blk); Brett Hart (10 pts 3 reb 1 ast 1 blk)

January 5, 2017
Butler (5-7, 0-3) @ Seton Hall (9-3, 3-0)

We're the only win-less team in the conference, and now we're facing down the current leader of the pack on their court, the only loss-less team in the conference. They haven't lost a game on their court all year, they're on an eight game winning streak, and that their RPI is 66th in the nation doesn't mean much – ours is 48th and look at us! So we went into this one knowing we had our work cut out for us.

It was. We trailed 10-26 with 12:54 to go in the first half, and we could have completely given up at that point. I mean, Seton Hall shot the **** lights out, so it wasn't like we were playing terribly, we were just flat-out outmatched. By halftime I was amazed we only trailed 39-54, considering Seton Hall had out-shot us 65.5% to 52.0% from the field and gone 7 of 9 from beyond the arc. How the hell do you stop that?

Well, we just continued to slug it out. Damion Phillips had a stunning dunk with 15:44 to go in the game that brought us within 12 points, down 46-58, and Russell Harris brought us even closer with a brilliant three-pointer seconds later that made it a 49-58 game with 15:00 to go! We kept it within ten for much of the remainder of the game, but we were still out-gunned no matter how you shook it. We may have played our best game of the season, but we still lost 74-89.

Player of the Game: John Perry (13 pts 5 reb 1 ast 2 stl)
