3/7: We play #9 seed Penn ST, 16-12, 9-9, in the quarter finals. They beat us by 12 there so we’re taking this seriously.
3/8: 87-64. Never a game. 37, 7, 3 for Pey. +17 RBs.
#5 seed, #25 ranked Wisconsin, 22-9, 12-6 in the semis. We beat them by 33 here.
3/9: 78-62. Again in this game we jumped out to an early lead and it was never close. 16, 10 for Wilx, 13, 6, 6 for Boz. 49 RBs (+12).
Little used PF/C Jay Parr hurt his foot. Out about a week.
It’s #3 seed, #21 ranked Indiana, 21-8, 12-6 for the title. We beat them by 19 here.
3/10: 58-79. Not our night, 28.4%. We fell behind early and were never in it. 23, 6, 5 for Boz, but he got very little help.
This probably cost us a #1 seed. Hoping for a #2.
3/12: 26-4, 16-2, #8, RPI #6.
I’m flabbergasted. #1 overall. That doesn’t even make sense. I’ll take it though.
One nice thing about Li not having a regular job is that she’ll travel with us for as long as we’re playing.
3/14: Siena, 19-12, won their play in game, so we have them first.
3/16: 58-56. We were almost one and done. Rod Pey hit a buzzer beating three to save us. For the second game in a row we couldn’t make a shot- 33.3%, 20% on threes. 18, 9, 4, 4 for Pey, but he was 5-19, and 1-8 on threes, but he got that one when it counted. +9 TOs. “Survive and advance.”
#8 seed Memphis, 22-9, in the 2nd round. We beat them by 15 in November.
3/18: 83-62. 25, 3, 9 for Boz, 20, 4, 3 for Mill. +9 RBs. We shot 49.2% so hopefully the shooting slump is over.
Our #3 guard Cob Mill hurt his wrist. He’ll play in our next, but not at 100%.
#4 seed, #7 ranked Duke, 25-6, in the Sweet Sixteen.
I’ve never made it past this round.
3/23: 87-83. We were down 12 early, 7 at the half. We kept coming at them in the 2nd and finally took our first lead with 3:11 to go. It went back and forth until the last minute. 24, 5 for Pey, 15 for Epps, 12 and 12 for Tarr, 12 for Mill. +14 RBs.
Io Foge hurt his knee. He’s out for our next game. Tarr will start at SF, and Epps will back up.
#6 seed, #19 ranked Kansas, 22-10, in the Elite Eight.
3/25: 68-58, and the FINAL FOUR! It was back and forth for 35 minutes. A 7-0 run got the lead to 11 and they were done. 16, 5, 3 for Boz, 11, 8 for Tarr, filling in for Foge. We overcame 21 TOs. Great D heled them to 33.3% shooting, 18.2% on threes.
We have a shot at winning this thing. The big test is next vs. BYU, #2 seed, but #1 ranked (#2 RPI). The other bracket has #4 seed Illinois, #20 ranked, vs. #5 seed Mississippi ST, #17 ranked.
My dilemma is whether to stay with the lineup that won our last game, or go back to Foge. I’m going to share time and go with the hot hand.
4/1: 75-67, and we play for the title. We led most of the way but it was often a 2 or 3 possession game, and occasionally one. 15, 6 for Pey, 14, 7 for Baer. The three guys I rotated at SF and as back up inside players, all did their share and combined for 19, 18, 5. I’m going with that in the final. +10 RBs, 12 TOs.
It’s an all Big 10 final as we play #4 seed, #20 ranked Illinois, 27-8. We beat them by 10 here, then 5 there. We’re favored by 1 ½ points.
4/3: CHAMPIONS!!! 76-57. We stormed out to a lead, extended it, extended it again, and got it to 21 at the half. My biggest job in the locker room was to keep everyone calm, and to remind them that the 2nd half was not just a formality. We played a little too conservatively in the 2nd, playing to guard the lead more than going right at them, but it never got to single digits. The biggest stat? 54 RBs (+25); we end up #1 in the nation in RBs, #2 in blocks. +6 TOs.17, 11, 3, 3, 5 for Wilx, 13, 9, 2, 4 for Pey, 8, 15, 3, 2 for Baer, 8, 5, 2, 2, 2 for Boz, 12 for Epps.
Foge reinjured his knee, so he didn’t play much. It’s not serious.
What a feeling! I’m so happy that Li was here to share it.
I was asked about a million questions after the game and the net cutting. At least two were actually interesting questions. I have no doubt I’ll be the “flavor of the month” for a while in the sports world. Don’t get me wrong, this is my greatest dream come true, at least as far as my career is concerned. Everything has a down side, though.
4/4: Awards: Rod Pey was NCAA tourney MOP. In conf., we got stiffed. We won the conf. by 4 games and all we got was Rod Pey on the 2nd team, and me as COY. At the very least Pey should have been 1st team, and Baer and Wilx should have been 2nd. Not happy.
4/9: Crap! I usually complain about NOT getting offered a good job. This year I’m complaining because I was offered my dream job- UConn. They’re ranked (#15), and everybody is coming back. Their Team Prestige is way higher, and their budget is almost double ours; oh, and the salary is about 5 times what I’m getting here. How do I leave a national champion though. I ask for 48 hours.
4/11: Tough decision, but we’re staying.
4/16: We hired another crappy assistant coach.
4/23: We ask for money. No. We won a national championship. What does it take?
4/27: That was fast! Li and her collaborator got the changes done in two sessions, and Li actually loved them. She has started the second book in the series. The publishers want the first out by Labor Day, so they can push it form the Xmas market.
We’re losing 7 players but Baer, Foge, Epps, and Mill are all back and we have a terrific incoming class.
The dream came true this season. It’s a matter of so many things. We got a very favorable seeding in a bracket that was not that strong. Most of the best teams were upset along the way. When we got a key injury, the guys we filled the time with came through beautifully.
32-4, for my best season ever, record wise, as well as via the title. Overall, I’m 301-125, .707 after 13 years.
