11/14: 90-75 over #12 Oklahoma St in the first round of the NIT. 30 for Kip Boz, 17, 3, 4 for SF Bo Epps. Close for a half but we scored 51 in the 2nd.

#6 seed, but #4 ranked LSU in the 2nd round. How does #4 in the country wind up a #6 seed?

11/16: 81-84. We played catch up all night; in the end we didn’t, but we played well. 16, 14, 3 for Center Barr Wilx, 18, 3 for PF Earl Tarr, 16, 6, 3 for guard Rod Pey. +11 RBs. Outside D let us down. They hit 16 threes.

11/23: 76-74 at Tulane. 17, 8, 4, 4, 2 for Pey, 17, 3 for Epps, 13 for Boz, 10, 11 for Tarr. +12 TOs. We were down as many as 13 but we kept chipping away. We never quit in this one.

2 lineup changes: Boz is starting for Mill at PG, and Cam for Epps at SF.

11/26: 71-38 Duquesne here. The D was amazing. They shot 29.7%. +13 TOs.

Now that we’re winning, Li’s dad brings clients, business associates… to games regularly, and hands out free tickets even more regularly. He got on the season ticket list, buying the max of 4, using the names of several people on his staff so he has plenty of tickets. He does the same thing for OSU football.

11/30: 76-62 over Jackson ST here. Balance- 8 guys scored, all between 6 and 14. +11 TOs. They were undefeated coming in.

12/3: 87-62 at Wisconsin-Green Bay. All 5 starters in double figures, led by 21, 7, 5, 3 for Pey. +8 RBs, +10 TOs.

12/7: 84-70 over Weber ST here. 22, 5 for Pey, 17, 7, 5, 3 for Boz, 12, 7, 5 for Wilx, 12, 8 for Tarr. +11 RBs.

President Murtha has declared a critical water emergency in much of the country. The northeast and the Pacific northwest are the only exceptions.

“We are doing all we can, but a decade or more of not only ignoring, but exacerbating the problem has left us in exceedingly dire straits.

“One of my first actions in January of this year was signing an executive order permanently banning fracking- 100% of it, no exceptions, but the damage done by that horrible practice has essentially destroyed our water system in major areas of the country. The Congress later supported my action by passing legislation that reinforced my executive order.

“Water is essential to life. People all over the world are dying- many people, and at least two billion struggle to find potable water every single day. We are doing all that we can to prevent our problem reaching that level, but it’s close. We are diverting all of the military budget that is nonessential into cleaning up our water systems and aquifers here. It is a daunting problem and frankly, I am very concerned.

“The issue of nuclear waste is of grave concern. Leakage from nuclear energy plants has rendered huge areas of the world’s oceans and land inhabitable. The only solution here is the complete and permanent cessation of the use of nuclear energy. We have passed, and I have signed legislation to that effect. We are urging other countries to do the same.

“Solar, wind, and water power are being developed as rapidly as we can do it, and my administration believes that these clean, renewable energy sources can provide us with all of the energy we could ever need.

“Slightly less serious, but only slightly, is the issue of air pollution. We slipped way, way back for a decade or more. Legislation has already been passed to deal with this issue, and we feel that progress will be made.”

12/10: 68-80 at Bradley. Their SG and SF both caught fire late, and combined for 7 threes in the last 3 ½ minutes. That did us in. 24, 5 for Pey, 12, 7, 2, 3 for Tarr, 7, 10 for Wilx.

Li and I continue to do great. My job keeps me at work way too much, which limits our time together, but we do what we can to compensate. Whenever I’m on campus we have lunch together, and if it’s going to be a late night I try to take an hour or two in the evening to sneak home to be with her. She’s the early to bed type and I require little sleep, so I just go back to work when she goes to bed. I try to keep those marathon work days down to one or two a week.

I also bring as much work home with me as I can. She likes hoops enough to watch video with me, and even contributes interesting observations at times. All in all, I couldn’t be happier.

12/13: 74-71 at South Florida in OT. Whew! 28 lead changes, 10 ties. Seemed like this game went back and forth with every possession. We got it to OT with Rod Pey’s buzzer beating three, and won it on another three by Pey. He had

15, 5, 5 with 6 steals. Wilx had 16 and 11, Cam 8, 15, 3, Lane 12, 6. +15 RBs.

12/21: 70-77 vs. #23 Mississippi ST here. We didn’t make shots when it counted, shot 33.9%, 22.7% on threes. 17-10 for Wilx, 16, 3, 5 for Boz, 17, 5 for Pey.

12/25: At the end of pre-conf. play we’re 7-3, RPI #27. +8.4 PPG, +5.9 RBs, +4.4 TOs.

Unfortunately, in our last 3 we had 2 losses and an OT win.

MORE unfortunately, 3 of our first 5 Big 10 games are against ranked opponents, and they’re all on the road.

12/28: 63-81 at #11 Maryland. They were better. We didn’t play that badly. 16, 8, 3, 2, 2 for Wilx, 13, 8 for Cam, 14, 4 for Boz.

We need to go at least 2-3 for our first 5. The last 13 conf. games are all games we have a shot at.

12/30: Li came home complaining that her legs, where they met the prosthesis, were extremely painful. When we looked they were very irritated, oozing, leaking a little blood.

We’ve known that standing all day is not a good idea. The prosthetic legs are pretty incredible, but standing all day long is an issue. I’m concerned. She can’t see the doc until Tuesday, due to the holiday weekend. She’s only working one day out of the next three but I want her to call in. She says there’s no way she can do that on a holiday weekend.

12/31: 83-56 over Iowa here. We won the 2nd half 46-24. 5 in double figures, Cam had 9 and 12. +21 RBs.

Boz hurt his wrist. He’ll probably miss our next game.

1/1/14: Li worked today. Bad idea. She’s a real mess.

1/3: The specialist put Li in the hospital. She says the left leg is dangerously infected and the right one is almost as bad. She needs IV meds and complete rest for a few days, and that’s no guarantee.

1/4: 82-89 at #15 Michigan ST in OT. We had a chance to win it at the end of regulation, but we made a bad pass. They stole it and time ran out. Then they controlled the OT. We played well. Tough loss.

1/6: Li and I had a long talk- well, we’ve had several long talks. It makes no sense for her to work at a stand up job. We need to find an alternative.

We’re trying to come up with ideas that play to her strengths. Her dad is also in on it. He wants her to start a business, and he’s willing to provide start up money- BIG start up money.

“I have no interest in doing something just to make money.”

“There are businesses that help people.”

“Yes, there are, but I know nothing about business.”

I don’t think we’ll find an instant solution. Li has given notice at work. Her specialist said she simply couldn’t do this kind of work.

1/7: 80-65 over Wisconsin here. 16, 4, 2 for Epps, 3 guys had 12 each.

1/11: 65-78 at #8 Indiana. 19, 2, 6 for Boz, 15 for Mill, 9, 10 for Cam. I spoke to the guys in the locker room after the game and told them I thought we had a good chance to win at least 10 of our final 13. I believe it, and I hope I
convinced them.

Well, we met my goal of going 2-3 for our first five games.

1/14: 86-80 over #11 Maryland here. HUGE win! We led most of the way, never by more than 11. Every time they got it to one possession we got the stop. All 5 starters and 2 subs had between 9 and 15. 11 RBs for Wilx.

Hopefully this will be the start!

Li never went back to work out her notice- doctor’s orders. She’s pondering possibilities. She’d like to do a website offering one on one consultation on meds- strictly one on one, for a fee, but she doesn’t think it would fly. Too many free sites. Most of them give terrible advice, and it’s way too general, but they’re well known.

She doesn’t need to work financially, we’re fine. But she needs the intellectual stimulation.

I mentioned the possibility of becoming a professor in the field but that doesn’t do it for her.

I am encouraging her to take her time making a decision.

1/18: 81-71 at Iowa. 28, 7, 2, 3 for Pey, 11, 12, 2, 3, 2 for Wilx, 14, 2, 11 for Boz, 8, 5, 5 for Mill. +14 RBs.

1/21: 83-58 over Nebraska here. 24, 10, 4, 4 for Pey, who has been hot. 13, 2, 5 for Boz, 10, 7, 3, 3 for Cam. +9 TOs.

1/25: 77-74 at Minnesota. Another one that went back and forth all night. At the end we hit a three, 2 twos and 4 of 4 free throws, on an 11-5 run. 16, 13 for Tarr, 15, 6 for Pey, 15, 4 for Epps. +15 RBs.

1/27: “I’ve got it.”

“What?”

“Consulting pharmacist.”

“But you said-”

“No, live. I offer the idea to one of the chains, or small chains. I go around to a few stores in the area and consult with their clients who want or need consultation.”

“Just sit around waiting for-”

“No, by appointment. This store sets me up for a full day on Monday, this store on Tuesday, and so on.”

“That could work.”

“They provide me with a small space and a desk. I’m going to pitch it, and see what happens.”

“Great!”

1/28: 77-69 over Penn ST here. Another balanced scoring game, led by Wilx with 14 and 8. +14 TOs.

14-6, 7-3, RPI #13. +7.0 PPG, +5.4 RBs, +3.2 TOs. In a 2 way tie for 5th, 1 back of 3 in 2nd place. We have to be close to being ranked.

2/1: 72-45 over Purdue here. 47-17 at the half. 17 each for Wilx and Pey. +13 TOs, +9 RBs. Great D!

7 to play. 3 on the road. The 4 home games are against #11, 1, 16, 8, in that order. I’d love 5-2.

“I’m in! PharmCare loved it. They’re going to do some publicity, let people know, and the people in the stores are going to promote it and hand out a flyer- which I need to design. They have 5 stores within a half hour of here, and they want me to do one day a week at each, appointments, but if I have free slots they’ll post that on a sign above the counter, and on their website.”

“Awesome. I’m glad you didn’t need to go with the two giants.”

“No way. I didn’t even pitch it to them. Went I went to PharmCare a few days ago they loved it. They just needed to sell it to their board.”

“They managed that in a few days?”

“They did it at the regional level. It didn’t have to go to corporate.”

“Excellent!”

2/4: 78-73 at Rutgers. 20, 3, 3 for Boz, 19 for Cam, 16, 3, 2 for Pey, 9, 12, 4, 3, 3 for Wilx. +9 TOs.

2/8: 74-77 to #11 Illinois here. Another of those back and forth all night games. They hit a three at the buzzer. 15, 6, 2 for Pex, 12, 10, 4 for Wilx, 11, 5 for Epps. They won it at the line, 22-30 to 8-14.

2/11: 79-61 at Northwestern. 22, 9 for Cam, 14, 7 for Pey. +12 RBs, +9 TOs.

2/15: 81-75 #1 Michigan here. We just beat the #1 team in the country! 18, 7, 5, 3 for Pey, 16 for Epps, 15, 6 for Wilx. +17 RBs. We were up 10 with 59 seconds left.

2/18: 90-70 over #20 Michigan ST here. 20, 5 for Pey, 19, 2, 4 for Boz, 3 others in double figures. +8 TOs.

2/19: 19-7, 12-4, RPI #14. Tied for 3rd. I can’t believe we’re not ranked.

Li loves her new job. She’s working sitting down, which is a must, but she really likes working with clients one on one. She feels she is definitely helping people.

2/22: 80-76 at Wisconsin. All 3 inside players had 10 RBs. 21 points for Cam, 18, 4 for Pey, 9, 5, 7 for Boz. +13 RBs.

1 to play, at home vs. #13 Indiana, and a win gives us 3rd place.

2/25: 73-58. 12, 10 for Tarr, 16 for Pey, 14, 5, 2 for Epps, 12 for Mill. +10 TOs.

2/26: 21-7, 14-4, Finally ranked. #25. RPI #11. +8.3 PPG, +6.2 RBs, +3.5 TOs.

Pres. Murtha announces a breakthrough in scientific research.

“We believe this development will purify water quickly and easily, without negative effects. It has passed all tests, and the lab at MIT, where the work has been done, is confident that it may be introduced into our water supplies. Our plan is to begin with Lake Michigan, and if all goes well, we will deliver the system elsewhere.”

3/4: Li’s horrible auto accident was a year ago today. She has really done well except for the one fall, and then the issue of standing all day. She now walks without having to give it any more thought than anyone else would.

3/7: #6 seed, #18 ranked Michigan ST, 22-7, 12-6, in the round of 8. Lost there in OT, won here by 20.

3/8: 74-64. It was close all the way, until we went on a very late run. 14, 6 for Cam, 14, 5, 3 for Tarr, 13, 3, 3, 2 for Pey, 12 for Boz.

#2 seed, #7 ranked Maryland in the semifinals. They won by 18 there, and then we won by 6 here.

3/9: 67-68. They led most of the way, by as many as 18 but we came back late and actually led twice in the last 90 seconds. But they had the last possession and they scored. 24 for Boz, 14, 5, 3 for Mill, 15 RBs for Wilx. Tough loss.

3/12: 22-8, 14-4, RPI #12.

#4 East. We play Cal-Poly, 22-8.

3/16: 67-48. 16, 12 for Wilx. +15 RBs, +9 TOs. Never a game.

#5 seed, #17 ranked Memphis, 24-8, is next.

3/18: 74-76. Our starting guards were both in foul trouble all night. 19 TOs hurt, too. 15, 8, 7 for Boz, 13 each for Pey and Cam, 8, 12, 2, 3 for Cam.

3/20: Li still really likes her job, and I’m not seeing the exhaustion I saw when she was at the pharmacy.

People, especially Li’s parents and sister, ask us about babies all the time. She’s 29, and I’m going to be 37 in May, so if we’re going to have babies both of us agree it should be soon, but we’re not quite ready yet.

And there’s that question of where will we end up. I think I’ll need to make one more move to get to a truly elite team, and if the opportunity presents itself I’ll take it. Li supports me on that.

Oh, her idea of having a live consulting pharmacist in drug stores is catching on all over the country. Some chains and regional operations are going with pharmacists and some are going with well trained non-pharmacists. The ones going with pharmacists seem to be doing better, as to drawing clients, which means drawing customers to the store.

4/3: #3 Syracuse won it all.

4/4: Awards: Rod Pey and Barr Wilx, both juniors, made Big 10 2nd team.

4/9: We’re here for another year.

4/16: Amazingly, we are able to hire a decent assistant.

4/23: We ask for a budget increase. Yes! $13,000.

23-9, 14-4, 3rd place. A good season. Overall, I’m 269-121, .690.

2 very good looking big guys coming in. Hoping for a great season!

5/1: We get the national gold and international basic scouting reports.

5/17: Pres. Murtha announces that the water purifier has been a resounding success. It will be implemented throughout the country.

6/5: No spots open for transfers.

6/15: Li has been tired lately, to me at least she’s too tired on a too frequent basis.

6/26: 7 seniors. That’s a lot of scholarships. We need at least 4 bigs. Looking at 16.

7/7: Li has been to several doctors, been through All sorts of tests. No diagnosis yet. She’s really not in good shape. She’s tired all the time. No other symptoms, really.

8/7: Ray Baer, a PF/C, is #45 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to 5 bigs, 2 PGs.

9/18: We get 3 PFs, including the #1 guy on our list, #29 Jon Ray. Sam Sill, #83, and Tom Reed, #49 also committed.

No in season tourney this season. Much tougher schedule.

9/19. Li has rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). We are told that sometimes the extreme fatigue precedes the joint pain. That makes diagnosis difficult, and it’s why it took so long to figure out. The specialist she’s seeing is very highly regarded- she’s on the faculty here. She says the type of RA Li has is very difficult to treat. She will try everything she knows, but we should not expect a “quick fix,” if there is a fix.

9/25: Got a 4th big, Ted Bees, #75.

10/2: Got 2 PGs, Herb Hall, #48, Ray Long, #97. One to go.

1st day of practice. We’re going to make some noise this season; we’re good and we’re deep.

10/9: Got a PG, so we’re all set if everyone hits the SAT score.

10/25: Li couldn’t take either of the first two meds that were tried. The third isn’t doing much, but we need to stay on it for another 12 days to be sure.

11/6: Here’s the lineup:

Senior Rod Pey will get all the minutes he can handle at SG. Junior Cob Mill will start at PG. Senior Kip Boz will get lots of minutes at PG, and a few at SG.

Junior Bo Epps starts at SF, supported by senior Cal Lane.

Ray Baer will get the minutes at PF. Senior Barr Wilx starts at C. Senior Earl Tarr, and junior Io Foge will fill in inside.

I like the looks of this team!

11/8: Another new med. The pain and stiffness have started. We’re told there are meds that will provide a little pain relief, even if we never find anything to cure, or at least to slow the progress of the RA.

“It’s so weird. My knees and ankles hurt.”

“You don’t have knees and ankles.”

“Yes, that’s what I mean.”

11/9: Li called the therapist who worked with her when she was learning to use the prosthetic legs. It turns out that “phantom pain” is a fairly regular occurrence with patients who have lost limbs, or even a finger or a toe.

11/15: 86-54 over Oregon ST here. 18, 6, 5 for SG Rod Pey, 12, 11, 2, 2, 3 for PF Ray Baer, 12, 3, 7, 2 for PG Cob Mill, 14 for sub guard Kip Boz. +19 RBs, 9 TOs. Great opener!

11/18: 80-64 vs. Wake Forest here. 18 for Baer, 12, 10, 4, 2 for Pey. +12 TOs.

11/20: Ranked! #20.

All 7 recruits signed.

11/22: 97-82 with Memphis here. 25, 12, 6 for Baer, 16, 3, 7, 3 for Mill, 18, 3, 3 for Boz, 13, 8 for Epps. +26 RBs! Baer is the real thing.

11/25: 77-68 at Boise ST. 14, 6 for Baer. 9 players had between 6 and 14 points. +17 TOs.

Rod Pey hurt his calf. He’ll play in our next, but not at 100%.

We asked Li’s rheumatologist about having a baby. She was not encouraging. We certainly could, but the doc said there’s a fair chance it would exacerbate Li’s symptoms, possibly dramatically. Li did not take the news well.

11/29: 85-66 over #19 UCLA here. 21, 5, 6 for Pey, 17, 8 for Boz, 10, 10 for Baer. +22 RBs.

This team looks like we could do great things this season.

Back up inside player Io Foge hurt a calf. Out about a week.

12/2: 68-55 vs. #19 NC ST here. 19, 7, 3, 2, 4 for Pey, 16, 10 for Baer. +9 RBs.

Li has kind of withdrawn. I know she’s in pain, and I think she’s depressed about what we learned about having a baby.

12/6: 57-68 at Virginia. We couldn’t make a shot in the first half- 20%. 17 for Mill, 11, 7 for Epps. +8 TOs.

12/13: 88-45 over South Florida here. 16, 14, 4 for Wilx, 23 for Boz, 15, 7, 5 for Pey. 49 RBs (+28), 10 TOs.

12/17: Li quit her job today. She is in too much pain, and her movement is too restricted for her to work, or even to do that much driving.

“I don’t know why you stay with me. I’m no good to you. I am always ill. I have no strength. I can’t do anything.”

“Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, that ‘in sickness and in health” thing? I meant that. Second, I happen to love you. I hate that you lost your legs- not because it makes you less attractive or anything like that; it doesn’t. Not to me anyway. Because it has to be a terrible thing to deal with. I hate that you have to live with RA, and especially since it’s a kind they can’t seem to do much about. I hate all of that- not because of what it does to me, but because of what it does to you. Third, I’m not leaving- ever. I love you, no matter what. I’m here, no matter what. If worrying about that is adding anything at all to the load you’re carrying, drop it. I’m here, I’m staying here.”

She cried.

12/20: 87-50 vs. Georgia here. We scored 56 in the 1st half. 27, 2, 4 for Mill, 18, 5, 7 for Pey. +9 TOs, +8 RBs.

12/25: We end the pre-conf. season at 8-1, #20, RPI #11. +19.3 PPG, +11.5 RBs, +6.2 TOs. We beat 2 ranked teams.

12/27: 73-54 over #11 Maryland here. 22, 3, 3 for Mill, 14, 9 for Boz. We lead for the last 36 ½ minutes. An amazing 51 RBs (+21).

12/30: 65-57 at Rutgers. 23, 4, 3, 2 for Pey, 12, 10 for Wilx, 12 RBs for Baer.

1/3/14: 73-69 over #20 Michigan here. 19, 5, 4 for Pey12, 9, 3 for Tarr.

1/6: 73-69 at Nebraska. 24, 6, 2, 6 for Pey, 18 for Mill. Sloppy game, we had 22 TOs, they had 27.

I’m an uncle. Li’s sister had a baby boy last night.

1/10: 71-61 vs. #13 Illinois here. 18, 5 for Pey, 10, 12 for Baer, 10, 8 for Wilx, 10, 6 for Foge. +7 RBs.

We’ve been #1 in the nation in RBs for most of the season.

1/13: 83-94 at #17 Maryland. They led by 23 early, 18 at the half. 20, 2, 4, 3 for Boz, 14, 6, 3 for Baer, 16 for Pey. +9 RBs. We just didn’t play D.

1/17: 88-69 over #17 Indiana here. 22 for Boz, 18 for Mill, 15, 7, 6 for Pey, 11, 11 for Baer. +11 RBs. It was close for a half but we won the 2nd half 50-33.

1/20: 65-51 at Northwestern. 15, 6, 6, 3 for Pey, 11, 9, 3 for Wilx. +14 RBs.

We’re alone in 1st place. 3 teams 1 back, 3 more 2 back.

1/24: 75-56 vs. Rutgers here. 16, 6, 3 for Pey, 14, 12 for Baer, 10, 7 for Wilx. 46-22 at the half. +12 TOs, +7 RBs.

1/27: 70-64 at Purdue. Down 17 early, 9 at the half. 16 each for Wilx and Pey, 13, 4, 3 for Tarr. Ridiculous officiating, 56 fouls called.

I met Li 3 years ago today.

1/29: 17-2, 9-1, #, RPI #. +14.0 PPG, +9.4 RBs, +4.2 TOs. 2 game lead over 6 teams, with 8 to play. We have 3 tough road games against ranked teams still ahead, but I like our position.

1/31: 85-76 vs. Michigan ST here. 19 for Wilx, 4 others had 10 or more. A season low 23 RBs, but +12 TOs.

“I wrote a story.”

“Really?”

“Yes. I was thinking of little Kiki, and I wrote a children’s story, for when nhe’s about 3 or 4.”

I read it. It was terrific. I told her she should have her dad see what he can do with it. He knows everyone so I’m sure he knows some publishers.

2/3: 91-83 over Minnesota here. 17 each for Baer and Mill, 15 each for Wilx and Boz. We came from 12 back. Seemed to take us a long time to wake up.

4 of our last 6 are on the road.

2/7: 67-79 at Penn ST. We scored only 20 in the 1st half. 15, 11 for Baer, 12 for Pey.

Iowa and Wisconsin are only 1 back, Illinois is 2 back. 5 to play.

2/10: 105-72 #24 Wisconsin here. We got 62 in the 2nd half. 23, 5, 5, 3 for Boz, 20, 10 for Baer, 13 each for Foge and Wilx. +10 RBs, +7 TOs.

2/12: 20-3, 12-2, #10, RPI #6. Back to a 2 game lead with 4 to play.

2/14: 71-57 at Iowa. 14 each for Boz and Tarr, 11 each for Pey and Wilx. 24 TOs, but +21 RBs.

Huge win. It all but guarantees us a 1st place finish. Only Wisconsin is 2 back, with 3 to play.

Li’s dad got her story to the biggest publisher of children’s books in the world, and they loved it. They will publish, and they want a series from Li, with her main character featured in all of the books.

2/17: 71-60 at Michigan. 16, 10 for Wilx, 15, 4, 7 for Boz, 14, 7 for Baer. +12 RBs.

This win clinches 1st place!

2/21: 89-60 with Nebraska here. 19, 2, 6 for Pey, 21 for Mill.

3 game lead with one to play.

“Will, this is perfect. When I’m not feeling well I don’t write, but whenever I am, I can write then. I don’t have to drive anywhere; I just write here at home. It’s wonderful.”

I agree!

2/24: 73-68 at #16 Illinois. 21, 8, 3, 3 for Pey, 18, 5, 5, 2, 2 for Boz. +11 RBs.

2/26: 24-3, 16-2, #8, RPI #5. +13.4 PPG, +8.6 RBs, +3.5 TOs. We win the Big 10 by 4 games.

The publishing company now wants a rewrite. They say the story is tiny bit too "young." The market for kindergarten/first grade is much bigger. They want her to work with one of their story editors to change it just a little so the appeal is more to 5 year olds than to 3 and 4 year olds. Li is fine with that since they assure her the changes will be more to language sophistication than anything else.

3/7: We play #9 seed Penn ST, 16-12, 9-9, in the quarter finals. They beat us by 12 there so we’re taking this seriously.

3/8: 87-64. Never a game. 37, 7, 3 for Pey. +17 RBs.

#5 seed, #25 ranked Wisconsin, 22-9, 12-6 in the semis. We beat them by 33 here.

3/9: 78-62. Again in this game we jumped out to an early lead and it was never close. 16, 10 for Wilx, 13, 6, 6 for Boz. 49 RBs (+12).

Little used PF/C Jay Parr hurt his foot. Out about a week.

It’s #3 seed, #21 ranked Indiana, 21-8, 12-6 for the title. We beat them by 19 here.

3/10: 58-79. Not our night, 28.4%. We fell behind early and were never in it. 23, 6, 5 for Boz, but he got very little help.

This probably cost us a #1 seed. Hoping for a #2.

3/12: 26-4, 16-2, #8, RPI #6.

I’m flabbergasted. #1 overall. That doesn’t even make sense. I’ll take it though.

One nice thing about Li not having a regular job is that she’ll travel with us for as long as we’re playing.

3/14: Siena, 19-12, won their play in game, so we have them first.

3/16: 58-56. We were almost one and done. Rod Pey hit a buzzer beating three to save us. For the second game in a row we couldn’t make a shot- 33.3%, 20% on threes. 18, 9, 4, 4 for Pey, but he was 5-19, and 1-8 on threes, but he got that one when it counted. +9 TOs. “Survive and advance.”

#8 seed Memphis, 22-9, in the 2nd round. We beat them by 15 in November.

3/18: 83-62. 25, 3, 9 for Boz, 20, 4, 3 for Mill. +9 RBs. We shot 49.2% so hopefully the shooting slump is over.

Our #3 guard Cob Mill hurt his wrist. He’ll play in our next, but not at 100%.

#4 seed, #7 ranked Duke, 25-6, in the Sweet Sixteen.

I’ve never made it past this round.

3/23: 87-83. We were down 12 early, 7 at the half. We kept coming at them in the 2nd and finally took our first lead with 3:11 to go. It went back and forth until the last minute. 24, 5 for Pey, 15 for Epps, 12 and 12 for Tarr, 12 for Mill. +14 RBs.

Io Foge hurt his knee. He’s out for our next game. Tarr will start at SF, and Epps will back up.

#6 seed, #19 ranked Kansas, 22-10, in the Elite Eight.

3/25: 68-58, and the FINAL FOUR! It was back and forth for 35 minutes. A 7-0 run got the lead to 11 and they were done. 16, 5, 3 for Boz, 11, 8 for Tarr, filling in for Foge. We overcame 21 TOs. Great D heled them to 33.3% shooting, 18.2% on threes.

We have a shot at winning this thing. The big test is next vs. BYU, #2 seed, but #1 ranked (#2 RPI). The other bracket has #4 seed Illinois, #20 ranked, vs. #5 seed Mississippi ST, #17 ranked.

My dilemma is whether to stay with the lineup that won our last game, or go back to Foge. I’m going to share time and go with the hot hand.

4/1: 75-67, and we play for the title. We led most of the way but it was often a 2 or 3 possession game, and occasionally one. 15, 6 for Pey, 14, 7 for Baer. The three guys I rotated at SF and as back up inside players, all did their share and combined for 19, 18, 5. I’m going with that in the final. +10 RBs, 12 TOs.

It’s an all Big 10 final as we play #4 seed, #20 ranked Illinois, 27-8. We beat them by 10 here, then 5 there. We’re favored by 1 ½ points.

4/3: CHAMPIONS!!! 76-57. We stormed out to a lead, extended it, extended it again, and got it to 21 at the half. My biggest job in the locker room was to keep everyone calm, and to remind them that the 2nd half was not just a formality. We played a little too conservatively in the 2nd, playing to guard the lead more than going right at them, but it never got to single digits. The biggest stat? 54 RBs (+25); we end up #1 in the nation in RBs, #2 in blocks. +6 TOs.17, 11, 3, 3, 5 for Wilx, 13, 9, 2, 4 for Pey, 8, 15, 3, 2 for Baer, 8, 5, 2, 2, 2 for Boz, 12 for Epps.

Foge reinjured his knee, so he didn’t play much. It’s not serious.

What a feeling! I’m so happy that Li was here to share it.

I was asked about a million questions after the game and the net cutting. At least two were actually interesting questions. I have no doubt I’ll be the “flavor of the month” for a while in the sports world. Don’t get me wrong, this is my greatest dream come true, at least as far as my career is concerned. Everything has a down side, though.

4/4: Awards: Rod Pey was NCAA tourney MOP. In conf., we got stiffed. We won the conf. by 4 games and all we got was Rod Pey on the 2nd team, and me as COY. At the very least Pey should have been 1st team, and Baer and Wilx should have been 2nd. Not happy.

4/9: Crap! I usually complain about NOT getting offered a good job. This year I’m complaining because I was offered my dream job- UConn. They’re ranked (#15), and everybody is coming back. Their Team Prestige is way higher, and their budget is almost double ours; oh, and the salary is about 5 times what I’m getting here. How do I leave a national champion though. I ask for 48 hours.

4/11: Tough decision, but we’re staying.

4/16: We hired another crappy assistant coach.

4/23: We ask for money. No. We won a national championship. What does it take?

4/27: That was fast! Li and her collaborator got the changes done in two sessions, and Li actually loved them. She has started the second book in the series. The publishers want the first out by Labor Day, so they can push it form the Xmas market.

We’re losing 7 players but Baer, Foge, Epps, and Mill are all back and we have a terrific incoming class.

The dream came true this season. It’s a matter of so many things. We got a very favorable seeding in a bracket that was not that strong. Most of the best teams were upset along the way. When we got a key injury, the guys we filled the time with came through beautifully.

32-4, for my best season ever, record wise, as well as via the title. Overall, I’m 301-125, .707 after 13 years.
