Samford drops second straight on the road, overmatched by the Denver Pioneers
DENVER, CO – The Samford Bulldogs go on the road and lose their second straight game 89-74 to the Denver Pioneers. With the exception of one second half push, this one was never close. The Pioneers of Denver dominated in the paint. Levi Pardee, the DU Freshman Center from Batavia, New York led all scorers with 25 points, also grabbing 8 rebounds. His aggressive play forced the Samford Center Tank Josey into foul trouble early in the first half. Josey finished the game only mounting ten minutes of play. Denver led at half time 42-35 hitting 52% of their baskets and going to the free throw line 19 times. A frustrated A.C. Read said “We have to get in their faces and disrupt them without fouling. Either we are standing there giving them free reign to the basket or we are mugging them.”
The first ten minutes of play into the second half saw the Bulldogs chip away at the deficit, and took their only lead in the game 62-59 with 9:13 left. Samford was able to match the Denver tempo early but was unable to maintain the push and over the next 5:20 minutes of play, Denver mounted a 20-4 run establishing control with 3:53 left in the game. The Pioneers finished the game shooting 60% overall and 44% from three point range. Read said after the game “Down the stretch we ran out of gas. They pushed the floor and we couldn’t match them. We got a long way to go to get our defense where it needs to be.” When asked about Denver’s lights out shooting Coach Read added “We were exploited! We got our asses kicked! We simply can not keep allowing teams to beat us shooting fifty plus, up to sixty percent and dictate to us how they are doing it.”
The Bulldogs have one more game on the road Tuesday night against Buffalo of the MAC conference before heading home to Birmingham to face the Richmond Spiders on Friday night. Samford will have their hands full against Buffalo as the similarities between them and Denver’s offense are eerily close. The 2-2 Bulls are averaging 77.0 points per game on the season and shooting 47.7%.

Buffalo slams the door on struggling Samford team, 82-59
AMHERST, NY – The Buffalo Bulls handed the Samford Bulldogs their third straight defeat Tuesday night 82-59 in front of a near sellout crowd of just over 6,000 in Alumni Arena. The Bulldogs could never get anything going as they never led in the game and at one point trailed by as many as 26. While Samford was able to match closely in the second half, it was the play of the Bulls in the first half that allowed Buffalo to carry a 49-32 lead into halftime.
Buffalo’s Sophomore PF Tavis Shugarts led all scorers with 20 points, also pulling down 8 rebounds. Center Sheldon Newbery and SG Jerrard Hunter also put up double digit points, dropping in 15 and 11 points respectively for the Bulls. The Bulldogs leading performer was Senior PG Gerald Darby as he was able to put in 30 minutes on the court getting 13 points and 4 rebounds. The only other Bulldog in double digit point was Michael Romano with 10, missing a double-double by just 3 rebounds grabbing 7, in his 25 minutes of play. After the game, it was a clearly dejected A.C. Read that could only mumble his dissatisfaction “What can you say? When you fail to show up defensively, your play and numbers in the end will be inferior as ours was tonight.”
Samford will hope to end their three game skid, returning home for a Friday night matchup against the Atlantic Ten Conference Richmond Spiders whose early struggles started their season with four straight losses before defeating Nevada at home. Coach Read stated that with Richmond’s early offensive struggles and the Samford teams defensive misfortunes, “We might just get what the doctor ordered with this home return.”

Bulldogs outlast Richmond, win 76-70 at Home
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Samford Bulldogs ended their three game losing streak with a 76-70 win over the Richmond Spiders Friday night. Putting together their most complete game of the season to this point, the Bulldogs were able to notch the win pulling their record to an even 3-3.
Samford’s Senior PG Gerald Darby took home player of the game honors putting up 19 points with 6 assists in his 32 minutes of play. Senior PF Michael Romano had another solid outing with 13 points and 8 rebounds. The performance of these two along with Center Jay Frist off the bench spelling a foul burdened Tank Josey helped the Bulldogs to a five point 39-34 lead at halftime. Coach Read stated after the game “We came home and answered the bell. Very proud of how these guys were able to bounce back after what has been a long and disappointing couple of weeks on the road.”
The Bulldogs will go back on the road to face Abilene Christian before coming home for their next two games. Hopefully the momentum from this when carries all the way to Abilene and brings another check into the win column.

Bulldogs defensive woes continue, lose on the road to Abilene Christian 97-82
ABILENE, TX – Samford loses a shootout last night to the Abilene Christian Wildcats 97-82. The Bulldogs continue to struggle defensively as they allowed the Wildcats to shoot 58.7% from the field. This was the worst showing by the Bulldogs this season giving up 97 points, 49 free throw attempts on 27 committed fouls.
Samford came out on fire and led 37-23 at the half way point of the first half. The Wildcats were able to adjust offensively, and Samford’s hot hand cooled off to allow Abilene Christian to pull within one at the half 54-53. The Samford coach said “Once they adjusted to us defensively we could never keep control on the floor. We gave up too many unforced fouls and allowed them too many free shots.”
The second half was all Wildcats, as the Bulldogs couldn’t keep pace. In a game where Samford’s offensive numbers should yield a win shooting 48.4% and hitting 10 three’s, the defense couldn’t stay out of foul trouble sending the Wildcats to the free throw line 49 times and hitting 40 of them. Read's biggest point after the game was “When you send the other guys to the line 31 more times and you allow them to get 28 more points than you from fouls, you’re lucky to only lose by 15.” The lone bright spot for Samford statistically in the loss was the play from Senior PG Gerald Darby getting a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists.
Samford will head home with extra time to attempt to figure things out as their next game will not be until next Tuesday December 13, 2016 when they host the Blazers from UAB. This will be a home game for the Bulldogs, but with the hometown Blazers you can rest assured they will come large in numbers and ready to play.

Bulldogs are 3-4, playing five of the seven games on the road to start the season
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Coach Read and the Bulldogs are still trying to find a defensive balance as they are averaging giving up 79.1 points per game which ranks them 312th Nationally. They begin a couple of upcoming slow weeks only playing one game per week over the next two weeks, both at home, playing UAB and Morgan State respectively. They will not travel again until December 27th when they open up conference play against Western Carolina. The Bulldogs are currently in 8th position in the Southern Conference standings. This week the SoCon awards went to Senior PF Ronald Lane of Chattanooga and freshman player of the week is SF Lyle Amos of Virginia Military. This is the second straight week that Amos has taken home the weekly freshman award.
Nationally, the awards go to SO PG Trafford Collins of Villanova. Collins put up 46 points and 14 rebounds in a win over the New Hampshire Wildcats. Freshman honors got to C Clay Huston of the Temple Owls. Huston put up a 26 point, 10 rebound double-double in a win over Robert Morris University. The polls didn’t see a lot of shake up, the UNLV Rebels being the lone team to crack into the top 25. The Jayhawks of Kansas climbed their way back into the top 10, ranking 7th with two strong wins during the week, one of them being over the ranked Florida Gators.

Bulldogs are 3-4, playing five of the seven games on the road to start the season
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Coach Read and the Bulldogs are still trying to find a defensive balance as they are averaging giving up 79.1 points per game which ranks them 312th Nationally. They begin a couple of upcoming slow weeks only playing one game per week over the next two weeks, both at home, playing UAB and Morgan State respectively. They will not travel again until December 27th when they open up conference play against Western Carolina. The Bulldogs are currently in 8th position in the Southern Conference standings. This week the SoCon awards went to Senior PF Ronald Lane of Chattanooga and freshman player of the week is SF Lyle Amos of Virginia Military. This is the second straight week that Amos has taken home the weekly freshman award.
Nationally, the awards go to SO PG Trafford Collins of Villanova. Collins put up 46 points and 14 rebounds in a win over the New Hampshire Wildcats. Freshman honors got to C Clay Huston of the Temple Owls. Huston put up a 26 point, 10 rebound double-double in a win over Robert Morris University. The polls didn’t see a lot of shake up, the UNLV Rebels being the lone team to crack into the top 25. The Jayhawks of Kansas climbed their way back into the top 10, ranking 7th with two strong wins during the week, one of them being over the ranked Florida Gators.

Samford claws back, but loses a heartbreaker in final seconds
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Samford returned home and played their best defense of the year. After overcoming a 9 point deficit at the half, the dogs fought their way back to gain the lead late in the game only to be heart broken in the last seconds of the game to fall to the cross town rival UAB blazers 63-62.
In the first half, the home team Bulldogs held their own defensively playing loose and trying to control a slow tempo offense to help in transition against a much quicker UAB team. It was close with neither team pulling ahead or controlling any significant lead. At the three minute mark in the first half, the game saw ten lead changes, and the largest margin by either team was never larger than three points. Late turnovers in the half proved costly as it allowed UAB to grow the halftime lead to nine, leading 33-24. Coach Read said going into the locker room “Very proud of how our guys have responded defensively, but we are simply giving up the ball to much and can’t afford to continue to make costly turnovers.”
The second half saw the Samford team play more secure with Coach Read focusing more on the inside play of his offense with less freedom shots. The Bulldogs kept the second half turnovers at a minimum giving up only three while playing a closer and more pressing defense flipping the turnover tide on the Blazers. This allowed Samford to slowly chip away at the Blazer lead, and with 4:21 left in the game saw the Bulldogs take back the lead 54-53. The Bulldog SF Caron Francis was hot in the second half putting up 14 of his 17 total, before succumbing to fouls and having to exit at the 3:17 mark.
In clear nail biting fashion the lead changed three times in the final minute, with the Bulldogs taking the lead 62-61 with 0:35 seconds left on a drive layup by SG Wendall Brunson. The Blazers were able to answer with 0:14 on a shot by Blazer SG Omadre Sawyer. Coming out of a time out, Coach Read and the Bulldogs played for the final shot attempting to open a last second shot by SG Wendall Brunson that hit just inside the rim on the glass side and bounced off. A clearly dejected but proud Coach Read stated after the game, “I couldn’t be prouder of how we responded. After the past couple of weeks we have had trying to find ourselves, I think we got a sneak peak at what we can and will become. We will take this loss, as hard is it is gonna be, and use it as a building block in our foundation.”
Samford remains home for their next game against the Morgan State Bears (5-4). The past long week was certain to have had a positive effect on the Bulldogs, this week should stand to do the same having no weekend game and not playing again until Tuesday December , 20th.

The Bulldogs end up on the right side of a tale of two halves
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Bulldogs looked like two different teams in the game against Morgan State last night, at least on the defensive ends of the court. Where the offense saw consistency, it was a tale of two halves defending the Bears. Morgan State was 16 of 26 from the field in the first and only 5 of 24 in the second. Samford was able to fast pass the Bears in the second half to gain their fourth win of the season beating Morgan State 70-62.
The Bulldogs couldn’t figure out the Bears offensive movement around the floor in the first twenty minutes of the game. Morgan State shot 61.5% in the first half leading early and going into the break up 44-35. While Samford was able to shoot over 44% and put up 35 in the half, they still found themselves down by nine. This was largely due to the Bulldogs ineffectiveness to rebound. Morgan State out rebounded the Bulldogs 18 to 8. The Bulldog coach stated “It’s really embarrassing when you only get eight boards in a half, but understandable when you allow the other guys to shoot over sixty percent. We got to find a way to force them into bad shots shadowing them and out quick them to the boards. If we can’t do that, it’s gonna be another long half and disappointing finish.”
Coach Read’s halftime locker room anger turned into motivation in the second half as the Bulldogs came out up tempo pressing the floor on the Bears while playing a much more aggressive defensive style. Samford was able to force mistakes on Morgan State’s SO PG Gerald Cleveland giving up ten of the teams twenty turnovers in the game. The Bears shot barely over 20% to finish out the game allowing Samford to complete 17 point swing to win by eight. “This is how you hope your team responds to adversity” said the Samford Coach. He added by stating “If we can continue to match our improvement over that past couple of weeks, we can show people that we are much better than what they thought. This is exactly what you want to see going into conference play.” As happy as Coach A.C. Read was about the outcome of the game, he acknowledged that the team has to pull together forty minutes of play and stop digging themselves into a hole early in games.
Samford goes into conference play with a record of four wins and five losses. With another open week they will have extra time to prepare to go on the road to face a Western Carolina team that has lost five straight after winning their first three games of the season. If the Catamounts JR center David Impastato can stay out of his early fouls troubles, Samford could find themselves struggling. Tipoff will be 6pm on Tuesday December 27th at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, NC.

While Samford was able to shoot over 44% and put up 35 in the half, they still found themselves down by nine. This was largely due to the Bulldogs ineffectiveness to rebound. Morgan State out rebounded the Bulldogs 18 to 8. The Bulldog coach stated “It’s really embarrassing when you only get eight boards in a half, but understandable when you allow the other guys to shoot over sixty percent. We got to find a way to force them into bad shots shadowing them and out quick them to the boards. If we can’t do that, it’s gonna be another long half and disappointing finish.”
Coach Read’s halftime locker room anger turned into motivation in the second half as the Bulldogs came out up tempo pressing the floor on the Bears while playing a much more aggressive defensive style. Samford was able to force mistakes on Morgan State’s SO PG Gerald Cleveland giving up ten of the teams twenty turnovers in the game. The Bears shot barely over 20% to finish out the game allowing Samford to complete 17 point swing to win by eight. “This is how you hope your team responds to adversity” said the Samford Coach. He added by stating “If we can continue to match our improvement over that past couple of weeks, we can show people that we are much better than what they thought. This is exactly what you want to see going into conference play.” As happy as Coach A.C. Read was about the outcome of the game, he acknowledged that the team has to pull together forty minutes of play and stop digging themselves into a hole early in games.
Samford goes into conference play with a record of four wins and five losses. With another open week they will have extra time to prepare to go on the road to face a Western Carolina team that has lost five straight after winning their first three games of the season. If the Catamounts JR center David Impastato can stay out of his early fouls troubles, Samford could find themselves struggling. Tipoff will be 6pm on Tuesday December 27th at the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, NC.

Samford blisters the Catamounts in the second half to win 75-48
CULLOWHEE, NC - Samford enjoyed it’s conference opener on the road winning convincingly 75-48. In a game that started out very sloppy, the first points did not come until the 16:47 mark with both teams committing seven turnoversduring that time. With both teams settling down, neither enjoyed a lead larger than four at any point in the first half. The Bulldogs were able to pull away soundly in the second half overpowering and outscoring the Western Carolina team to win 48-22 in the second.
In the first half, both teams played soundly on the defensive side and kept each either from shooting over 40%. The leading scorer for the first half is the Western Carolina C David Impastato 14 points in 15 minutes going 6/6 from the floor, all inside the paint. Samford was however, able to hold a 27-26 lead going into the locker room. The Samford coach showing concern stated “We need to take away the play of the Impastato kid and push them to the perimeter. We gotta find a way to take away the inside from them in the second half.”
The second half was all about adjustments and the Bulldogs came out with their hair on fire. Samford opened up a 19-0 run to start the half that covered a span of 6:12. The Catamounts could never seem to find a rhythm afterwards. The Bulldogs opened up a lead by as many as 29, and ended up winning by 27. Samford SF Caron Francis led the way again missing a double-double by one rebound, putting up 13 points and 9 boards. An elated Coach Read stated afterwards, “Great way to open up conference play, win on the road and felt like we really opened up in the second half and was able to do all the things we wanted to do. We still seem be feeling our way around blindly to start games, but that’s on us coaches. Really proud of our kids today and excited to see improvement before our eyes and how hard this group is working.”
Samford will return home to face the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Friday December 30th. UNCG opened the season with seven straight wins but find themselves on the losing end of their last three ball games. UNCG opened conference play at home to East Tennessee State losing 73-82. This will be the final game for the Bulldogs in 2016 and they currently find themselves with a record of 5-5 (1-0).

Bulldogs Win, Start 2-0 in Conference Play with Solid Showing Against UNC Greensboro 94-88
BIRMINGHAM, AL – Continuing their unexpected winning ways in conference, the Bulldogs were able to put on an offensive display to put up 94 against a hot ETSU team that had won four of its last five games.
The Bulldogs Caron Francis and Michael Romano combined for 39 of the Samford points and the team combined to out rebound the Spartans to control the inside. Overcoming a fouling mis-match, Samford was able to utilize their bench having a hot shooting Terry Ware hit four FG all from beyond the arc for 14 points, having added two free throws.
The UNC Greensboro Spartans held on late into the game but finally yielded giving up ground late in the game on second chance points and transition on the other end from the fast break. The Spartan senior guard Tyler Vick did all he could putting up 27 points in the losing effort.
With the 2-0 conference start for the Bulldogs, this places them over the hump at 6-5 on the season. They are only one win away from matching their overall 2015-16 win total at seven. Samford heads back on the road to face a Citadel team that finds itself at 5-6 and struggling to find itself defensively while putting up top conference numbers on the offensive end.

Coach A.C. Read stated after the game, “We really like the direction our guys are heading. They are listening and responding in practice and it is definitely showing on the court.” While recognizing the lapse tonight in team defense for stretches of the game, he said “We allowed them to pull back on several occasions when we felt like we had them, but in the end we stepped up. I think we are gaining experience from previous games that we are able to translate into knowledge and reactions in new game situations that may be starting to play in our favor.” Coach Read added “Time will tell as the season progresses. We will get deeper into conference play and that is going be a deciding factor on how the season scales tip.”
