5/1: National Gold, International Basic.

They got a brand new moving picture theater in Los Angeles. First one anywhere. I wonder if it’ll catch on.

#7 preseason.

5/21: Well, Cuba’s an independent country now, for better or for worse.

6/5: No interest in transfers.

6/26: 2 scholarships. We want 2 bigs.

8/7: Cap Mall is #15 on the Norton list. Alfo Holz is #24, Tony Owen #30.

8/21: We offer to a PF and a C.

9/18: We just got a commitment from the #1 recruit, a PF! Lost the other one but who cares.

Hawaiian Shootout vs. Toledo. TOUGH schedule.

9/25: Got a C, #9.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We’re going for the title and we have the players.

11/6: 10 man rotation. 4 spots are set but SF is WIDE open:

Sophs Cap Mall and Tony Owen will share the Point and play SG.

Senior Quu Dunn and frosh Eric More will back up at SG.

Three will share SF for now- frosh Doug Lenz will start, redshirt soph Joel Brad and junior Lew Lane will back up.

Frosh Cal Brox, who looks like a superstar, will start at PF and back up at C.

Senior Alfo Holz is back at C.

Soph Art Tral backs up at PF.

We play one at home, then go to the Shootout vs. Toledo. We’re the #2 seed behind Duke.

Here we go!

11/18: 98-79 over Toledo in the first round of the Shootout. 28, 15 for Holz, 26 for Brox, 17, 7, 5 for Mall.

#6 seed Washington, 3-0, in the semis.

11/19: 87-67. 27, 9 for Holz, 21, 13 for Mall, 9, 15 for Brox.

#2 seed, #4 ranked Duke, 3-0, for the title. An early challenge. We’ll learn a lot about ourselves in this one.

11/20: 88-73. 25, 11 for Mall, 18, 17, 4 for Brox, 22, 7 for Holz. 10 RBs for Owen. We have a LOT of weapons.

Both recruits signed.

11/27: We beat #15 Stanford, and #2 Arizona this week. 6-0, #2, RPI #1. #1 in PPG, #1 in RBs, 9.7 TOs. Holz is getting 23.7, 10.3, Mall is getting 21.0, 9.8. Brox is getting 16.8, 9.7 We have three legitimate superstars on this team.

12/4: 8-0, #2, RPI #4. Our three superstars continue to lead the way.

12/25: 11-0, #4, RPI #1. +15.9 PPG, +16.8 RBs, +3.4 TOs. Mall, Brox, and Holz lead us. We should be ranked at least #2, if not #1.

New songs I learned to play and sing this year: “Bill Bailey (Won’t you Please Come Home),” “The Entertainer,” “(Strolling Down the River) On a Sunday Afternoon,” “In the Good Old Summer Time.”

1/1/1903: 13-0, 2-0, still only #4. 2 road wins to start ACC play.

1/15: 16-1, 5-1, #3, RPI #1. UConn kicked our butts by 14 there. We shot 24.4%, they shot 44.9%. It was all about shooting; we outplayed them.

Our next 3 are against ranked teams- #21 Miami here, #7 Syracuse, there, #1 North Carolina here.

First two way wireless between here and Europe. President Roosevelt sent a message to King Edward VII.

1/29: 19-2, 8-2, #3, RPI #1. +15.0 PPG, +20.0 RBs, +3.2 TOs. Alone in 2nd, 1 back of UNC. The same three, Holz, Brox, and Mall still lead the way, but Tony Owen is playing very good ball, and Art Tral, who now starts at SF, is doing the same.

Mall is #15, Holz #23 on the Norton list.

3/9: #7 seed NC ST, 21-9, 9-9, in the quarters.

3/10: 73-48. 26, 14 for Brox, 18, 17, 9 for Mall, just missed a triple double. 64 RBs.

#3 seed, #7 ranked Syracuse, 26-5, 14-4, in the semis. We won by 5 there. Very good guards.

3/11: 101-87. 23, 5, 7 for Mall, 22, 14 for Brox, 19, 10, 9 for Owen. 52 RBs.

#1 North Carolina, 30-2, 17-1, for the title. They beat us easily at our place. Hopefully we’ve gotten better. Their starting C is out with a broken hand. He’s their best rebounder.

3/12: 72-83. Dang! They led most of the way. They’re better than us. We can win the national title, but only if somebody else knocks them off. I’m not telling my kids this, mind you.

29-3, 16-2.

#1 Midwest. We play UNC Asheville, 20-10.

3/16: 101-66. 34, 10, 5 for Mall, 15, 13 for Holz, 16, 12 for Brox, 10, 9, 9 for Owen. 60 RBs.

#9 seed UTEP, 24-8, in the 2nd round.

3/18: 79-71. They were up 11 at the half, 14 early in the 2nd before our shots finally started to drop. I pretty much gave up on the outside game and just pounded it inside. 23, 15 for Brox, most of it in the 2nd half. 15, 6 for Tral, and Mall and Owen got most of their points driving to the hoop. +20 RBs.

#4 seed, #14 ranked Michigan, 25-8, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 84-56. 32, 11 for Holz, 19, 7, 7 for Mall. 53 RBs, 10 TOs.

#3 seed, #5 ranked Kentucky, 29-6, in the Elite Eight. We won by only 3 here in December. This could be a war!

3/25: 80-76. A lot like our first meeting. Cap Mall had 34 but the rest of our starters were stopped cold. Sub guard Eric More had 13. We played great D, holding them to 31.8%, and took care of the ball. Frankly, if they had made their foul shots they would have won, 64.4%. We’ll take it.

And North Carolina was upset by Stanford! The team we felt we would have the most trouble with is gone.

We’ll play #7 ranked Stanford, 29-6, in the national semifinal game. We beat them by only 6 here in November. They are very much an outside team.

It’s #2 Arizona vs. #25 Utah in the other game.

4/1: 83-86. They led all the way. At the end we had an open look at a three and it rimmed out. 21, 12 for Holz, 25, 8 for Brox, 18, 8 for Mall.

I’m beginning to think it’s just not going to happen here. Three straight Final Fours, no titles. I’m feeling discouraged.

4/3: #2 Arizona wins the title.

4/4: Awards: My big three all made ACC 1st team- Alfo Holz, Cap Mall, Cal Brox.

Hoping I finally get that offer this year. I really don’t know if I can take that final step here.

4/9: I’m going to Georgia Tech. It will take a little time to rebuild, but they have the budget and the facilities. I’m excited!

Lots of work to be done.

4/16: Happy with the recruiter and the scouting coach I hire. Not so much with the bench coach.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade, which I don’t expect to get. Didn’t get it.

33-4, Final Four. Overall I’m 425-150, .739.

Rebuilding time, but then this program can go all the way!

5/1: I buy National and International Gold.

Preseason #21.

6/5: Cal Brox transferred out of FL ST. We’re offering to him and to one other.

6/12: We lose Brox to Mich. ST but get a great looking SG.

6/26: 5 scholarships. We need 3 guards.

8/7: SF Neil Inge is #45 on the Norton list.

An automobile went all the way across the country. Don’t seem possible. I’ve seen them of course, but I never rode in one. Seems like a fad to me.

“The Great Train Robbery” is something called a motion picture. Well this one is a whole story, told in more than an hour. First one ever. That Edison is really something.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, an SG, and 2 PFs.

I have a few players in academic trouble. How they got to this school, which is REALLY rigorous academically, is a mystery to me. We’re working to keep them eligible.

9/18: We get 3, lose 2, and I get the #1 overall, an SG. Also get #6, a PF, and #14, a PG. Rolling the dsic efor #2. Let’s see what happens.

Going to the Hawaiian Shootout vs. DePaul. Playing a lot of ranked teams at home.

9/25: Got #2, a PF. Lost the PG.

10/2: Got a PG, #22. If everyone hits our SAT score, which is not easy, we’re finished. Great class!

1st day of practice. If we can find guards who can move the ball and not turn it over too often we’ll be fine. We’re strong and deep inside.

Picked 5th. My A.D.’s goals are unrealistic. Final Four? Give me a break. This team was awful last season. I need time to rebuild. Top 3 in conf.? That’s a year away.

11/1: Baseball held something called the “World Series.” Boston, in the American League, won.

11/4: President Roosevelt is a very shrewd man. He manipulated things to get Panama declared a free and independent country. Why? We need a canal to connect the Atlantic and the Pacific, and Panama is the place where the path is the narrowest. We start digging soon. Smart man!

An outbreak of Plague in India. Hope it stays there and doesn’t spread.

11/6: I think we’re going to be okay! 8 man rotation:

Our weakest is definitely the Point. Senior Mike Roe will start there with soph Tom Brag backing up, but a lot could happen here.

Junior Mo Clad, a transfer from Brigham Young, is at SG. We have high hopes for him. Redshirt junior Joe Hawk backs up.

Our best player, soph Neil Inge, is at SF.

Soph Art Delk starts at PF and backs up at C.

Soph Adam Bora is at C.

Redshirt junior Jake Dens, a transfer from Georgetown backs up at SF and PF. We like what we see, but he’s a wild card. Academic issues have kept him from playing in the past. We’ve gotten him eligible, so let’s see what happens.

11/17: Great opener, 64-63 over #20 Utah at home. Back and forth all night. 19, 15 for Inge, who was everything we expected, 9, 13 for Delk at PF. 10 for Jake Dens from the bench, and he looked good on D. +7 RBs and we only turned it over 13 times, which, given our guards, is not bad. We won it when PG Mike Roe passed to Inge who hit a 17 footer with a hand in his face.

Off to the Shootout. We’re the #1 seed and we open with DePaul.

11/18: 80-65. 32, 11 for C Adam Bora, 26, 11 for SG Mo Clad, 9, 11, 6 for Inge. 51 RBs, 9 TOs.

#5 seed Alcorn ST, 2-0, in the semis.

11/19: 72-64. 22, 6 for Inge, 15, 11 for Bora, 12, with 6 assists for Roe. 45 RBs, 8 TOs. Loving how we’re taking care of the ball!

#6 seed Mississippi, 2-0, for the title.

11/20: 63-51. 17, 11 for Inge, 16, 5, 4 for Roe, 9, 10 for Delk. 47 RBs, 11 TOs. Admittedly, tougher competition lies ahead, but what a great start!

#6, RPI #9. Both are too high.

All 5 recruits sign!

12/4: 7-1, #5, RPI #6. We lost by 1 at Va. Tech after blowing a 17 point lead. +23 RBs but a season high 19 TOs. 27, 5 for Bora, 17, 12 for Delk, 15, 8, 5, 3 for Inge. They won it on a 30 foot luck shot but we should never have let them get in that position.

12/18: I read in the paper that two brothers from my home state put an automobile engine on something with a pair of wings and got it up into the air for 12 seconds. Now I know it’s just a stunt and it don’t mean nothing, but it’s still pretty amazing.

My two favorite new songs this year: “In the Sweet Bye and Bye,” “They’re Always in the Way.” That second one’s pretty funny, about whiskers. I still find hotels and saloons to play my music, and I still meet some mighty fine ladies doing it. As I’ve said all along I got no intention of ever getting married.

12/25: 10-1, #11, RPI #8. +15.6 PPG, +17.2 RBs, +1.5 TOs. Guard play is exceeding my expectations. Joe Hawk is getting some of Mike Roe’s minutes. As expected, Neil Inge is playing great ball. Adam Bora is playing at least as well as Inge, and Art Delk is getting 10.4 RBs. The schedule will get tougher as we head into ACC play but I think we’ll do okay.

1/1/1904: 1-1. Lost at #7 UNC so I don’t feel too bad.

2 ranked teams this week.

1/15: 13-3, 3-2, #16, RPI #18. In a 4 way tie for 4th. It’s a really tough conf. this season. 4th would be great.

1/29: 16-5, 6-4, #17, RPI #22. +8.8 PPG, +15.7 RBs, -1.5 TOs. In a 3 way tie for 4th.

Neil Inge is #30 on the Norton list.

We beat #4 UNC here.

2/12: 19-6, 9-5, #18, RPI #19. In a 2 way tie for 4th. We can finish lower but probably not higher.

2/26: We end the regular season 22-7, 12-6, #17, RPI #17. Tied for 3rd, #4 seed. +8.4 PPG, +15.-1.6 TOs. Inge, Bora, and Delk continue to lead us. Ball handling was the issue, as we knew it would be.

3/9: #5 seed, #20 ranked Syracuse, 20-8, 11-7, in the quarters. They beat us by 12 and 21 so this is a real challenge, but we think we can beat them this time.

3/10: 71-64. We led all the way, by as many as 18. 22, 15 for SG Mo Clad, 15, 11 for Bora, 15, 9 for Inge, 12, 9 for Delk. 22 TOs, not a point from the bench, but it’s a win! +25 RBs didn’t hurt.

#1 seed, #2 ranked, undefeated Florida ST, 30-0, 18-0, in the semis. My old team only beat us by 6 last time, but what a team! This may be the year they win it all.

3/11: 61-78. 23, 6 for Inge, 12,9 for Clad. We didn’t play badly, they’re just that good.

3/12: 23-8, 12-6, #17, RPI #18. Can we hope for a #4? UNC upset FL ST!

#4 South. We play UL Lafayette, 23-9.

3/17: 73-57. 20, 10, 4 for Inge, 11, 17 for Delk, 18, 9 for Bora, 13 for Dens from the bench. Only 4 points, but 10 RBs and 6 assists for Clad. +29 RBs.

#5 seed, #13 ranked -4, in the 2nd round. Tough 2nd round matchup!

3/19: 62-66. Dang! We had our chances but the shots wouldn’t drop, 33.3%, and we missed 4 of our last 5 shots. 30, 9 for Inge, 14, 8 for Bora.

4/3: An all ACC final between #2 FL ST and #3 UNC. My old team failed again. UNC by 13.

4/4: Awards: Adam Bora makes ACC 1st team. Neil Inge and Art Delk make 2nd.

4/9: I’m not going anywhere, probably ever.

4/16: Hired a #2 and a #3. Still can’t hire decent assistants.

4/23: I ask for money. Got $20,000.

24-9, 12-6. Overall, I’m 449-159, .738.

With the players coming back and the ones coming in I’m expecting big things next season.

The Louisiana Purchase Exposition just opened in St. Louis. I’m going this week.

5/1: The usual reports.

#3 preseason.

No one of interest in the transfer pool.

That Exposition was great. Can’t get that “Meet Me in St. Louis” song outta my head.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We want 2 and 2.

8/7: 4 on the Norton list: SG Ted Misk is #5, PF Bud Tash #23, SF Neil Inge #27, and PF Art Delk #36.

8/21: We offer to a PG, an SG, a PF, and a C.

Teddy Roosevelt allows as he’ll run for a full term of his own. Seems like a shoe in; everybody likes him.

9/18: Got 3, lost one. Got the #1 overall, an SG, #9, a PF, #13, a C.

Preseason NIT vs. Georgetown. Challenging sched.

9/25: Lost a PG.

10/2: Lost another PG. Still chasing that last recruit.

1st day of practice. I think we have the potential to win it all this year.

10/9: Got the PG, #31.

That subway in Boston caught on good enough that one just opened in new Yor. Still gives me the creeps. Ride around underground? Not me!

11/6: Here’s the lineup:

Frosh Ido Tsak and Ted Misk start at guard, Tsak at PG, Misk at SG.

Soph Gbai Chmo and frosh Matt Evan back up.

Junior Neil Inge is back at SF, with senior Jake Dens subbing.

Junior Adam Bora starts at PF, and junior Art Delk is at C.

Frosh Bud Tash backs up at PF and C.

This may be the best team I’ve ever coached.

We start at the NIT vs. Georgetown. We’re the #5 seed.

War between Russia and Japan.

11/9: Teddy wins the election in a landslide.

11/14: 86-57. 28, 8 for SG Ted Misk. 12, 11 for Inge. 13 assists for Tsak. 52 RBs, 7 TOs.

#4 seed, #7 ranked Cincinnati in the 2nd round. Good team!

11/16: 86-57 again! Weird. 28, 12 for Misk, who is the real thing! 20, 14 for Inge, 14, 10 for Delk, 12, 6 for Bora. 52 RBs, 11 TOs.

#1 seed, #1 ranked Arizona in the semis. They’re obviously very good, especially inside, but I think we can beat them if we play well.

11/18: 81-71. 34, 11 for Misk, 18, 12 for Delk, 21, 8 for Inge. 12 assists for Tsak. 47 RBs.

My old team, #3 seed #3 ranked Florida ST, for the title. This will be a great test!

11/20: 88-81 in OT. Misk hit a three to tie it at the end of regulation, and he had 7 of our 9 in OT. 37, 7 in all. 12, 17 for Bora, 16 for Inge.

We’re #2, behind Kansas.

Misk is averaging 31.8, 9.5 RBs, 17.3, 9.3 for Inge, 12.0, 10.0 for Delk, 9.3, 8.8 for Bora. Tsak gets 9.3 assists.

All 4 recruits signed.

12/4: 8-0, #2, RPI #1. Misk is #1 in the country in scoring at 29.9.

12/25: 12-0, #1, RPI #1. +17.0 PPG, +12.9 RBs, +1.5 TOs.

It’s great to be #1!
