1/1/1900: 13-1, 2-0. We beat a ranked team (Syracuse) on the road! Ware has been doing great since we put him in the starting lineup.

I stayed up to greet the new century.

1/15: 6-3, 5-2, #7, RPI #3. Tied for 3rd. It’s a tough conference.

The Boxer Rebellion is a real mess. President McKinley sent troops to try to get our people out of there. Many have been killed.

1/29: 19-4, 8-3, #7, RPI #4. Alone in 3rd, 1 back of Duke, 3 back of Ga. Tech. +14.4 PPG, +14.4 RBs (Still #1), +3.7 TOs (11.3).

2/12: 21-5, 10-4, alone in 2nd, 1 up on Duke, but 4 back of Ga. Tech. They just crushed us there.

We think we can win all of our last 4 regular season games.

2/26: We end the regular season at 25-5, 14-4, #7, RPI #4. We’re alone in 2nd, 4 back of 1st, 2 up on 3rd. +15.3 PPG (#6 in PPG), +15.3 RBs (#1), +2.9 TOs (#11). Hawk averages 19.5. Holz gets 18.3 and 10.4. Riva gets 11.2 and 11.1. 11.2 and 5.0 assists for Tigs. Ware came to the starting lineup late but gets 8.7 RBs.

Pres. McKinley announces that the depression is over and that we are in an economic boom, with unemployment at only 5%. He has done a great job. He also announced that he will run for re-election.

3/9: We play #7 seed, #16 ranked North Carolina, 20-10, 9-9, in the quarters. Tough matchup.

3/10: 100-74. Not so tough after all! 26 for Hawk, 16, 13 for Holz, 20, 2, 7 for Tigs. +20 RBs.

#3 seed, #17 ranked Duke, 21-8, 12-6, in the semis. Their PF is out with an ACL. We beat them twice, but they knocked us out last year in this round.

3/11: 92-87. 26, 8 for Holz, 20, 16 for Riva, 23, 3, 7 for Gram.

#1 seed, #3 ranked Georgia Tech for the title. They beat us up in the regular season game.

3/12: 94-87 and the title! It really was a game of runs. They led by as many as 12, we led by as many as 14. The last run was ours. 28, 6, 9 for Tigs, 31, 3, 3 for
Hawk, 12, 11 for Riva. +9 RBs.

28-5, 14-4. #7, RPI #5. Can we hope for a #1 seed?

#1 South. We play 16-14 Monmouth.

3/17: 93-61. 32 for 12, 7, 14 for Tigs, 15, 5, 3 for Holz. +16 RBs, 9 TOs.

#8 seed Oklahoma, 19-10, in the 2nd round.

3/19: 78-60. 25, 6 for Holz, 8, 16 for Riva, 14, 5 for Gram. +14 RBs.

#4 seed, #21 ranked Oklahoma ST, 25-7, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3rd straight year we make it this far but I’ve never gotten further. Best shot we’ve ever had.

3/24: 94-85. We led most of the way. 36, 10 for Holz, 14, 7 for Riva, 10, 13 for Ware. +14 RBs, 10 TOs. We’re playing really well.

#2 seed, #6 ranked Memphis, 33-2, for a trip to the Final Four. They are VERY strong inside, and really good overall. We’ll need to be at our best.

3/26: 69-72. Close all the way. We missed a couple of opportunities late while they connected.

Great season, my best ever.

4/3: #11 Oregon won it all.

4/4: Awards: Alfo Holz was ACC Frosh OY, and 1st team along with Adam Riva. Ban Hawk got 2nd team. I was Conf. COY.

4/9: Purdue wants us but I’m not going to Indiana.

UConn. No, way too far into Yankee country.

Staying.

4/16: Hired two really good assistants and a #3 who’s okay.

4/23: I ask for $. No.

31-6, 14-4, 2nd place, won the3 conf., tourney, made the Elite Eight. Great season! Overall, I’m 322-139, .698.

We lost one starter so we can look forward to another great season.

World’s Fair in Paris. Sounds wonderful. The 2nd modern Olympic games were held as part of it.

The 20th century is very modern. We have stayed in hotels that have indoor plumbing, flush toilets, bathtubs with how water faucets, all sorts of amazing things. I wonder how long before that sort of thing is in private homes. It would be nice!

5/1: The National Gold.

Ranked #25.

PF John Lyde transfers out. Good player who just couldn’t crack the lineup here.

6/5: One guy.

6/12: Didn’t get him.

6/26: 4 scholarships. Need 3 bigs.

8/7: Alfo Holz is #21, and Adam Riva #44 on the Norton list.

Pres. McKinley drops his Vice President to run with Teddy Roosevelt as VP.

That Carrie Nation woman is crazy!

Terrible storm and flood in Galveston, Texas.

Coaches Classic vs. Pitt, and a much tougher schedule.

9/25: Got the last one, a C, #32.

10/2: 1st day of practice. I like what I see!

11/6: Here’s the lineup:

Juco junior Troy Hein is at the Point. Soph Quu Dunn backs him up.

Returning senior Quin Tigs is at SG. Frosh Anto Bara backs him up.

Junior Kesi Simc starts at SF. Senior Jon Ware backs up at SF and PF. Simc was not able to hold this position last year. Let’s see what happens.

11/13: We’re the #11 seed in the Coaches Classic. We beat #6 seed Pitt 86-62. 22, 6, 3 for Holz, 16, 5, 4 for Tigs. Our top 6 all played very well. +14 RBs.

#3 seed, #6 ranked Memphis in the 2nd round.

People are saying that the Republicans made Teddy Roosevelt VP because they didn’t know how to control him, and this would make him powerless.

11/15: 78-64. Up 19 at the half. 14, 11 for Holz, 15, 5, 5 for Tigs, 16, 4 for Riva, 15 for sub guard Quu Dunn. +9 RBs.

#2 seed, #3 ranked UCLA in the semis. Excellent team.

11/17: 77-71. 19, 14 for Holz, 18, 4, 4 for Tigs, 12, 11 for Riva, 12, 4, 4 for Hein. +14 RBs.

#1 seed, #2 ranked Michigan for the title. Terrific outside game and an outstanding team all around.

11/19: 80-89. 18, 11 for Holz, 15, 10 for Riva, 19 for Hein, 14, 5 for Tigs. It was a shootout and they had more weapons.

11/20: #11.

All 4 recruits sign.

12/4: 7-1, #7, RPI #1. Holz leads us with 21.6, 10.4. 16.9 for Tigs.

12/25: 11-1, #7, RPI #1. +12.2 PPG, +11.5 RBs, -0.1 TOs.

Ware is going to start for Simc- better D, better RBs.

Best new song of the year? “Because.”

1/1/1901: 14-1, 3-0. We beat 3 ranked teams this week, one on the road. Holz continues to lead us.

1/15: 17-1, 6-0, #6, RPI #1. 1 1/2 game lead. Most wins are by a comfortable margin.

1/29: 19-2, 8-1, #6, RPI #1. Clemson beat us by 2 there. D let us down and we had 17 TOs. 1 game lead. +13.9 PPG, +14.0 RBs, +0.3 TOs.

Alfo Holz is #14, and Adam Riva #30 on the Norton list.

2/12: 24-2, 13-1, #5, RPI #2. 4 game lead with 4 to play. Holz is averaging 20.7, 10.4. 15.0 for Tigs, 13.2 for Hein at PG, and 12.2, 10.1 for Riva. Ware gets 7.0, 8.4. Great bench play, too.

Holz is #8 on the Norton list.

2/26: 28-2, 17-1, #4, RPI #3. +15.3 PPG, +15.3 RBs, +0.8 TOs. We win the conf. by 4. My team can play anyone in the country and have a great shot at winning. We have very high expectations for the post season!

3/5: Holz is #9 on the Norton list.

The National Baseball league has a rival. The new American League declared itself a major league. I have seen a few baseball games. It’s a bit slow for me. Better than football though. That doesn’t interest me at all. I’ve seen three football games and hope to never see a fourth.

Cuba is still trouble.

3/9: We play #8 seed Pitt, 16-12, 10-8, in the quarter finals. Beat them twice.

3/10: 83-60. 20, 10 for Holz, 16, 11 for Riva, 8, 14 for Ware, 14 for Tigs. +25 RBs, 11 TOs.

#5 seed, #22 ranked North Carolina, 19-10, 11-7, in the semifinals. Beat them by 33, but they’re a better team than that, especially lately.

3/11: 67-60. They were tough but we led most of the way. 17, 6 for Holz, 7, 11 for Ware, 8, 10 for Simc, 13 for Hein. +9 RBs.

#2 seed, #10 ranked Georgia Tech for the title. Hey lost a starter to grades but it hasn’t hurt them much. We beat them by 16. They’re on a 9 game win streak; ours is 13.

3/12: 63-81. Our worst game of the season. I am NOT happy. We shot 29.5%, 14.3% on threes. 16 TOs.

30-3, 17-1, #4, RPI #4.

#1 overall. That’s a surprise! We play 15-16 North Dakota ST.

3/16: 81-66. Never close. 20, 10 for Holz, 18, 11 for Riva, 16, 8 for Ware, 19 for Hein. +17 RBs.

#8 seed Marquette, 23-8, in the 2nd round. They’re strong inside.

#4 seed, #13 ranked Georgetown, 24-9, in the Sweet Sixteen. Excellent guards; their SG is a 1st team All American.

3/23: 83-71. Their SG got 29 but Holz got 27 and 14. 16, 11 for Riva, 11, 10 for Ware, 14, 2, 5, 4, 3 for Tigs. +17 RBs.

#2 seed, #5 ranked UCLA, 30-4, in the Elite Eight. We beat them by 6 in the Coaches Classic. Our bigs need to come through.

3/25: 83-77. FINAL FOUR!!! We led by 17 at the half. 21, 11 for Holz, 18, 4, 9, 3, 3 for Tigs, 13, 14 for Ware. +8 RBs.

We’ve beaten North Carolina, 23-11, 3 times this season, and here they are again. The last two times were both by only 7 points.

4/1: 81-68. 36, 15, a career best game, for Holz. 13, 14 for Riva, 12, 5, 5 for Tigs. +15 RBs.

#1 in the country Kentucky, 36-1, for the title. VERY tough team. The guards score and the bigs rebound.

4/3: 77-97. 29, 10 for Holz. No one else did much. This was as good a team as I’ve ever seen.

4/4: Awards: Alfo Holz was named 2nd team All American, my first. In conf., Holz was 1st team, Riva was 2nd but should have been 1st. Ware was also 2nd. I got Conf. COY.

5/1: National Gold.

Preseason #14.

The Pan American Exposition opens in Buffalo, NY. The President plans to visit, and the VP cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony.

6/5: Looking.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We want 2 and 2.

8/7: 4 Norton candidates: PG Cap Mall is #10, PF Alfo Holz #21, PG Tony Owen #38, and PF Kesi Simc #42. Simc has not been able to stay in the starting lineup in the past. Let’s see if he can do it in his senior season!

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, a PF, a C.

9/6: The President has been shot. He is in critical condition and may not live. It happened at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Leon Czolgosz, a known anarchist, has been arrested and charged with the crime.

9/14: The President is dead. Teddy Roosevelt has been sworn in as President. At age 42 he is the youngest to hold the office. President McKinley did an outstanding job of leading the country out of a severe economic depression. He will be missed. President Roosevelt’s wild and wooly style appeals to many. Let’s see if he is up to the job.

9/18: Bang! We got all 4! That’s unusual. We get a PF, #4, C, #17, a PG, #30, and a PG, #38. All are 5 star recruits.

Las Vegas Winter Jam vs. Creighton. Mostly ranked teams on the schedule.

10/2: We could take that final step this year. I have 8 world class players.

The country and the world are still reeling from the assassination. But the new President is acting very presidential, which helps. He is also pursuing his agenda right from the start. I think he will be a VERY popular President.

11/6: We have the equivalent of a starting 6:

Frosh Cap Mall starts at PG. He looks like a superstar.

Senior Troy Hein is at SG, backing up at PG.

Frosh guard Tony Owen starts at SF, backs up at SG.

Senior Kesi Simc is at PF.

Junior Alfo Holz is back at C.

Redshirt frosh Joel Brad backs up at SF, PF, and C, and gets starter’s minutes.

Junior Quu Dunn and soph Anto Bara, both guards, are hoping for a chance. If Simc falters again this year they will get one.

This is one terrific team!

The estate of Alfred Nobel, the Swede who invented dynamite, is giving out huge annual prizes in the categories of promoting peace, medicine, chemistry, physics, and literature. People say it’s because he didn’t want to be remembered as the “merchant of death.” Sounds like conscience money to me.

In music, this is the year of John Phillip Sousa. I am not a fan, but his music has overshadowed everything else. It all sounds the same to me.

11/20: 2-0 start. #11 ranked. Mall is incredible. He scores, rebounds, dishes, and he’s our best defender.

All 4 recruits sign.

12/4: 5-0, #9, RPI #4. Mall gets 21.8, with 7.4 RBs, 5.4 assists. He could average 30 if he were selfish. 19.0 and 11.0 for Holz. 14.6 for Hein,
13.0 for Owen, and 9.8, 8.6 for Simc. This is one impressive team- #1 in RBs, #2 in scoring, 10.4 TOs.

2 more at home then off to Vegas for the Jam vs. Creighton. We’re the #1 seed.

12/15: 7-0, heading for Vegas.

12/16: 87-66 over Creighton. 38, 7, 4 for Mall. +10 RBs.

#4 ranked Iowa ST, 8-2. They haven’t played anybody.

12/17: 97-72. 31, 9, 3 for Mall, 20, 6, 4, 4 for Tony Owen, 14, 13 for Holz, 15, 7, 8, 4 for Hein, 15, 8 for Simc. I tell ya, this team don’t take much coaching. Just put them out there.

#3 seed Pepperdine, 8-3, for the title. Their best player is out with a calf injury.

12/18: 80-63. They doubled Mall all the way so he got 11 points and 16 assists- and the tourney MOP award. 25, 11 for Holz, 24, 7, 4 for Hein, 15, 6, 3 for Owen.

12/25: 11-0, #7, RPI #1. +20.7 PPG, +18.5 RBs, +3.7 TOs.

1/1/1892: 14-0, 3-0, including a win over #4 North Carolina by 16 there. #5, RPI #1. Kesi Simc doesn’t look like he’ll give up his spot this year, 10.6, 9.1. And he’s the lowest scoring starter!

Something called the Rose Bowl, a football game in California. 49-0 so not much of a game.

1/8: 15-0, 4-0. #3, RPI #1. Kesi Simc hurts his back. Out 2 weeks. Brad will take his spot, and guards Dunn and Bara will get the extra
minutes.

1/15: 16-0, 5-0, #4, RPI #1. It’s early but we’re alone in 1st in the ACC.

1/29: 21-0, 10-2, #2, RPI #1. +18.5 PPG, +15.4 RBs, +4.1 TOs.

Cap Mall is #10, Alfo Holz #16 on the Norton list. Still one up on #7 Ga. Tech, who we beat by 17.

2/12: 25-0, 14-0, #2, RPI#1. 2 up on North Carolina and Ga. Tech. 5 or more on the rest.

Mall is #10, Holz #20 on the Norton list.

2/19: The win streak ends at 25. #21 Louisville beat us by 7 there. They were 20-59 on threes, a poor %, but they just kept taking them, and enough went in. Hopefully we’ll get them in the ACC tourney.

We’re 26-1, 15-1, Still #2. Only 1 up on UNC and Ga. Tech.

2/26: 28-1, 17-1, #2, RPI #1. 1 up on UNC and Ga. Tech. +18.8 PPG (#2), +16.5 RBs (#2), +3.8 TOs (#5).

3/5: Mall is #9 on the Norton list.

3/9: #8 seed Duke, 14-14, 8-10, won the play in. They’re up.

3/10: 92-54. 24, 8, 10 for Hein, 22, 9 for Holz. 55 RBs.

#4 seed Syracuse, 18-11, 11-7, in the semis. Beat them by 12 and 18.

3/11: 82-69. 33, 12, 5 for Mall, 11, 13 for Holz, 15, 4, 5, 3, 2 for Hein. +19 RBs, +8 TOs.

#2 seed, #3 ranked North Carolina, 28-3, 16-2 for the title. We won by 16 there but this is a VERY good team.

3/12: 69-79. We shot 22.2%. So frustrating. We just couldn’t make a shot. No one on the team shot more than 33.3%. I’m biting my forehead angry.

#1 ranked Stanford lost, too, so UNC could be #1 overall.

30-2, 17-1.

#1 overall. We play 13-18 Cal-Poly.

3/16: 96-61. 18, 13 for Holz, 23, 8, 6 for Hein, 22, 9 for Mall. 52 RBs, 7 TOs.

#9 seed Rhode Island, 22-9, in the 2nd round.

3/18: 92-65. 31, 14 for Mall, 26, 8 for Holz, 15, 6, 6 for Hein. 46 RBs, 9 TOs.

#4 seed, #11 ranked Indiana, 25-7, in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 15 in December. They are very good inside.

3/23: 83-61. 35, 10, 5 for Mall16, 5 for Hein, 12, 7, 8 for Owen.

#3 seed, #9 ranked Arizona, 28-5, in the Elite Eight. Good team, we’ll need to play well.

3/25: 30, 18 for Holz, 20 for Mall, 6, 16 for Owen. 58 RBs.

Both Stanford and North Carolina are out, and we’re headed for the Final Four.

We’ll play conf. rival, #2 seed, #7 ranked Ga. Tech, 30-6. We won by 17 in our only meeting.

On the other side it’s #16 Texas vs. #4 UCLA.

4/1: 82-71. 42, 14 for Mall in maybe his best game yet. 20, 6 for Holz. 53 RBs, 11 TOs.

#4 ranked UCLA, 34-4, won their game, so we’ll play them for the title. The odds makers are calling this a toss up.

4/3: 90-98. They were just a little better. 23 for Hein, 19, 4 for Holz, 13, 12, 7 for Mall, 11, 4, 5 for Owen.

4/4: Awards: Cap Mall is named 2nd team All American, and I get the National COY. In the ACC, Mall is Frosh OY. He and Holz are 2nd team. Both should have been 1st. I get Conf. COY.

Would I leave? For Duke, UNC, KY, sure. Otherwise probably not.

4/9: Florida calls. Difficult decision.

4/10: No. Florida isn’t South, except geographically.

4/11: Florida keeps calling. Great budget, great facilities. Dang! Don’t know what to do.

4/12: No. I don’t plan to move but once more, and Florida ain’t it.

4/23: I ask for $. Got $16,000.

35-3, title game again. Overall, 392-146, .729 after 16 seasons.

Next season? Title or bust!
