Historical Association #3

1/1/1912: 1-1 start to A10 play. We won a close one at home and were beaten badly on the road. It could be a difficult season from here on in.

Flora tells me our 4th child is due at the end of June, beginning of July.

1/15: 13-2, 5-1, RPI #62. In a 2 way tie for 1st. We’ve played really well. Our rotation seems set at this point, and those getting minutes are producing. We switched Joe Bede to PG, hoping team TOs would go down. We’ll see.

1/29: 17-2, 9-1, Ranked #24, RPI #39. +9.1 PPG, +4.6 RBs, +0.9 TOs. 2 game lead over 3 teams in the A10. I did not expect this kind of success to come this quickly. Still a long way to go though.

2/12: 20-3, 12-2. #21, RPI #33. 1 game lead, 2 on 3rd place.

2/26: We end the regular season at 23-5, 14-4, #21, RPI #27. Tied for 1st and the #1 seed. 2 up on 3rd.

3/7: #9 seed Davidson, 12-16, 8-10, in the quarter finals. We won by 12 there.

3/8: 76-59. 13, 11 for PF Mike Walk, 16 for SF Jim Burk. +11 RBs.

My old team, #5 seed Rhode Island, 21-11, 10-8, in the semifinals. We won by 13 here, but they’re better than their record indicates.

3/9: 82-97. They shot 62.7%, 11-19 on threes. We couldn’t stop them.

3/10: Rhode Island wins the title game by 18.

24-6, 14-4, #25, RPI #34.

3/12: #8 West. We’ll play #9 Georgia Tech, 17-13.

3/17: 76-74! It was close all the way, never more than a 7 point differential. They scored the last 4, and missed an open 16 footer at the end that would have sent it to OT. 14, 4, 4 for Center Greg Dane, 13, 4, 3 for SG Stu Bloc.

#1 seed, #6 ranked Kentucky, 28-2, in the 2nd round. Not sure we’re ready for this challenge. They are excellent, especially outside.

3/19: 54-74. We were never in it. They were bigger and quicker.

Great season though. It exceeded my expectations!

4/3: #1 Syracuse wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Senior SF Jim Burk makes A10 1st team. Soph PF Greg Dane makes 2nd team. I get the COY award.

4/16: I hire a decent #2 assistant and a lousy #3; couldn’t do any better, sadly.

Tragedy at sea. The Titanic sank. It launched with huge publicity. Hit an iceberg. Hundreds dead due to a shortage of lifeboats. That is simply inexcusable!

4/23: I ask for another budget increase. No.

25-7, 14-4. Overall, I’m 118-43, .733.

New baseball grounds in Boston. Named Fenway Park.

Titanic! Sounds like a great name for a movie.

Nah, no way. Who'd ever be interested in a movie about a sinking ship? Totally unromantic, so no women would go to it.

"Wasn't it sad when that great ship went down. Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives, wasn't it sad when that great ship went down." That song was a big hit in 1912/1913. I remember it well!

5/1: Not enough $ to buy any reports.

6/5: Looking.

6/12: We get a very good looking PG from Memphis.

Huge volcanic eruption in Alaska.

The “missing link,” Piltdown Man, is discovered.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We’ll go 2 and 1 either way.

7/1: Another son, Josephus, after my brother, born yesterday. We now have 4 boys, all healthy, thankfully!

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs and a C.

9/18: A C committed, #50. We lost a PG.

WS Midwest vs. Army. We made the schedule a bit more challenging.

9/25: We got a PG, #60. Lost a PG.

10/2: We lose a PG.

1st day of practice. We’re stronger outside than inside.

10/9: Got our last recruit, a PG, #76.

11/6: 7 man rotation:

Soph Ty Jenk, a transfer from Arizona, starts at PG.

Senior walk on Derr Leed starts at SG.

Redshirt junior Dan Page subs at both, but gets about as many minutes as Leeds. There will be a battle for SG.

Soph Ron Jobe starts at SF.

Senior Mike Walk is back at PF and subs at SF.

Junior Seth Hixx, a transfer from Wake Forest, is at C.

Frosh Jim Gloe backs up inside.

We’re better than we were last year, at least that’s how it seems to me.

Three way race for President. The Democrat, Woodrow Wilson, defeats President Taft, and Teddy Roosevelt running as a third party candidate. Teddy Came in 2nd, and Taft got only 8 electoral votes. 1st Democrat to win in 20 years. Not sure how I feel about a professor becoming President. Taft had to go, but I voted for Teddy. Looks like a war is brewing over in Europe, and I think Teddy would deal with it better than any of the others.

11/20: 2-0 start. We looked really good in both games. Off to the WS Midwest vs. Army. We’re the #3 seed, they’re #6.

11/21: 59-56. We did NOT play well on O. The D was very good, and that saved us. 12, 10 for Hixx, 14, 8 for Jobe, but we shot 32.2%.

#7 seed Austin Peay, 3-0, won in an upset. We meet them in the semifinal round.

11/22: 70-67. We’re having our hands full in this tournament. We were down by 11 early in the 2nd half. Then PF Mike Walk and C Seth Hixx finally found ways to get open, and they combined for 27 in the 2nd half.

#5 seed St. Louis, 2-2, for the title. It has been a tournament of upsets. We’ve narrowly escaped twice. Let’s see if our luck holds, or better yet, if we can actually play well!

11/23: 72-51. Finally! 5 with 10 or more, and Hixx had 6 and 14. +15 RBs, +8 TOs.

I just ate a brand new thing, Oreo cookies. I think they could catch on!

12/4: 7-1, #16, RPI #128, which is about right, really. I’m surprised we’re ranked, given that. We lost to Kent ST here on a very off night. We did everything wrong. Still, that’s our only loss so far. We’re still fiddling with the lineup. Jim Gloe is now starting at SF, Greg Dane at PF, and Dan Page at PG. Jenk has moved to SG, and Leeds, Walk, and Jobe are now subbing.

My dear father passed away over the weekend. He was only 72, but had been in ill health for some time. My mother died young (47) so the family fortune is being passed on equally to the five surviving children. Brother Josephus will continue to manage the financial affairs for all of us except sister Mabel, whose husband thinks he is a financial genius. Sadly, he’s a fool, and we all worry that Mabel may end up poverty stricken. We would, of course, not abandon her, but she is a suffragist, and would dearly miss her independence. Oh well, perhaps her husband will be fortunate- he will need to be!

For the record, father’s estate is certainly worth at least 250 million dollars.

12/25: 10-1, #23, RPI #40. +12.5 PPG, +8.7 RBs, +5.3 TOs. Heading for A10 play.

Ron Jobe broke his arm. Out until the post season. He had dropped down the chart to #2 big off the bench but we lose depth, which is never good.

1/1/1913: 2-0 start to conf. play but yet another major injury to a big man. Starting SF Jim Gloe broke a finger. He’s out until early March. We are REALLY thin inside now. Joe Donn, who rarely plays, is now our first big off the bench. He’s a freshman who we almost red shirted, so we’ll see. We may need to go to a 3 guard set if he can’t do the job, but we want to give him a chance, probably 4 games or so, at least.

1/15: 14-3, 4-2. Out of the top 25, RPI #28. We’re 1 back of 1st, in a 3 way tie for 5th, but it’s early.

Donn simply isn’t ready. We’ll use Leed at SG when we need to sub, and move Ty Jenk to SF. So we’re using a 6 man rotation. We cannot afford another injury!

1/29: 17-4, 7-3. Still not ranked. RPI #23. +8.5 PPG, +7.7 RBs, +2.9 TOs. In a 2 way tie for 3rd, 1 back of 1st. We’re much better with Leed in than we were with Donn.

2/12: 21-4, 11-3, #23, RPI #27. Alone in second, 1 back of URI, 2 up on 3 teams. 4 to play. Guard Ty Jenk is our leading scorer and best ball handler, but Seth

Hixx is our best player. Leed has really risen to the challenge. When our guys get healthy they’ll be behind him on the depth chart.

Looking at the schedule I think we’ll finish 2nd. It is not favorable.

The 16th Amendment was just ratified. It allows the federal government to impose and collect an income tax. This is not good news for people in my income bracket. I’m willing to pay my share, and I am even more willing to help those in need, but I am leery of this.

2/26: We end the regular season at 23-6, 13-5, #24, RPI #25. Tied for 2nd, but the #3 seed. +8.2 PPG, +7.7 RBs, +2.7 TOs.

Gloe and Jobe will be back for our first post season game.

3/7: #6 seed Dayton, 22-8, 11-7, in the quarters. They won by 9 there, we won by 2 at our place so this is a challenge.

3/8: Close until late. 22, 12, 6 for Jenk, 18, 11 for Walk, 17 for Page. +13 RBs.

#7 seed George Washington, 14-15, 10-8, won in an upset. We won by 17 there.

3/9: 75-70. 14, 12 for Hixx, 18, 8 for Leeds. +16 RBs. 19 TOs, but they had 18.

#1 seed URI, 21-8, 15-3, for the title. They crushed us by 25 there, late, but we’re better than that.

3/10: 53-51 and the title! This was a defensive battle, which was what we wanted. We thought we had an edge defensively. We slowed the pace and made
them work hard for everything. 5 players had between 8 and 11, with Derr Leed getting 11 and 6. +13 RBs and even in TOs. We won it inside. Great win because it was a strategic win. We worked a plan and my guys bought in and executed the plan!

3/12: We’re 24-6, 13-5, #20, RPI #18. I’m thinking a #4 or #5, with a slim chance of a #3. Hoping to start on Day 2.

#5 Midwest. I was hoping for better. We play the winner of a play in game to start.

Tough first round match. We play #12 Louisville, 16-14, who won the play in. Their C is out with a broken ankle but they’re still very good, especially at PF, SF, and SG.

3/16: 67-55. 13, 7, 5 for Ty Jenk, 13, 8, 3 for Leed, 13 for Jim Gloe at PF, 10, 11 for Mike Walk at SF. +8 RBs. Great win!

#4 seed, #17 ranked Oklahoma ST, 24-7, in the 2nd round. Good team, especially inside. We’ll need to play our best ball. I’ve never been to the Sweet Sixteen.

I think we have a chance here. We’re the underdog, but we could beat this team with a break here and there.

3/18: 69-72. Tough loss. It was close all the way. They had the last possession and we defended it very, very well. They were forced to take a 24 footer.

Unfortunately, it went in. 20 for Walk, 14, 8 for Leed, 13, 8 for Gloe, 7, 11, 7 for Jenk. Tough loss.

4/3: #4 Syracuse beat #1 KY for the title.

4/4: Awards: Soph guard Ty Jenks is A10 POY and 1st team. Junior C Seth Hixx is also on the 1st team. I get Conf. COY again.

4/9: Not interested in moving.

4/23: We need a bigger budget. We get $12,500. That will help!

27-7, 13-5. Overall, 145-50, .744.

We have nearly everyone back and some great players coming in. Looking forward to a great season!

It turns out my current worth is approximately $111 million. I’m shocked. Brother Josephus says he is trying to diversify our holdings but the coming war in

Europe, which he says is inevitable, will provide opportunities for huge profit, so he is investing in war related industries. I find that distasteful, but I see no way anything we could do would lessen the likelihood of the coming wars.

5/1: We buy the national basic report.

Another baby in November, I’m told. Can we finally have a girl?

6/5: We have an open spot. LOTS of good transfers. We offer to an SF.

6/12: No luck. We were close with him, but we lost him.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We need inside players. Not looking at any guards.

7/4: 50th anniversary of Gettysburg. A lot of old soldiers went there to commemorate it.

8/21: We offer to 2 PFs and a C.

9/18: Got a PF, #92, and a C, #502- but he’s been much higher every other month. Lost the other PF.

WS Midwest again this year, against Texas A & M. Tougher schedule this year.

Our brother Josephus says our money is very spread out, and we now own large numbers of shares in domestic munitions factories, shoe factories (soldiers need boots!), and other war related industries. He’s invested lots in automobile factories, particularly those who manufacture trucks. Companies that make dried foods also have a lot of our money, as do the makers of work clothes and uniforms. Tent manufacturers also have our money. He’s still big in railroads.
He feels it will be war next year, and it will be huge. He does not feel we will be drawn into it unless it lasts for quite some time.

9/25: Got a PF, #186.

10/2: 1st day of practice. I like this team. I think we could finally make the Sweet Sixteen, and we’re definitely in the hunt for best in the A10.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

We have two great starting guards, soph Tev Jett, a transfer from Memphis, at PG, and returning junior Ty Jenk at SG, backing up at PG. Soph Paul Hask will
back up at SG. Frosh Raul Angi is hoping for minutes.

Junior Ron Jobe is at SF, subbing at PF. He started last year but couldn’t keep the job. Backing up at SF are soph Jim Gloe, and senior Greg Dane. Both have been starters for us in the past.

Frosh Kyle Smey starts at PF and subs at C.

Senior Seth Hixx is back for one more year at C.

Again, I like this team!

11/17: George Edmund was born early this morning. 5 boys!

11/20: 2-0 start. We played well in both games.

In our first game two subs, Greg Dane, and Lin Card were injured. Both are out for 2 weeks. Last year’s bad injury luck is continuing.

All 3 recruits sign.

Henry Ford is always up to something and it’s usually innovative. He just started up something in his factories called a “moving assembly line.” Josephus says it’s ingenious! It will speed up production tremendously.

My brother Charles just sent me something in the mail called a “crossword puzzle.” All I can say is, I hope this catches on. It was fascinating!

Off to the MS Midwest.

11/21: #3 seed. We beat Texas A & M 82-74. 8 players had between 8 and 14 points. +10 RBs.

#2 Brigham Young, 2-1, in the semifinal round. I think we’re the better team.

11/22: 76-66. We led all the way. 23, 4 for Jobe, 13, 10, 7 for SG Tev Jett, 14, 10 for PF Kyle Smey. +9 RBs, 11 TOs.

#1 seed, #5 ranked Oklahoma ST for the title. Their starting C is out but their PF is world class, and their SG is right behind him.

11/23: 66-59! Great win! 17, 11 for Ty Jett, 10, 11 for Hixx, 11, 8, 3 for Jenk. Good bench play, +7 RBs. We beat the #5 team in the country!

12/4: 7-1. #3 LSU crushed us there. We won the rest. #10, RPI #7.

12/25: 10-1, #16, RPI #6. +6.1 PPG, +7.9 RBs, +1.7 TOs. Dane will now start for Jobe at SF.

We spent the holiday at our home in Galilee. We left here on the 20th and are there until the 27th. We play URI on the 26th so the opportunity afforded itself!

June or July of 1914 will bring us our 6th child.

The Federal Reserve System is formed. U. S. banking is a mess. Josephus has very little of our money in banks. He transfers into a checking account just in time to write checks, and just enough to cover them!
