5/1: We buy the National Gold.

6/5: No open spots for transfers.

Preseason #14.

A quota system on immigrants is put in place.

President Harding signs a proclamation officially ending the World War. Just a formality, of course.

Prohibition continues to be a national disaster. A very well organized criminal organization is being fed by profits on illegal alcohol and is becoming a strong force.

6/26: 2 scholarships. We want 2 inside players.

8/7: PF Tobe Sand is #30 and PG Matt Ando #43 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to a PF and a C.

9/18: We get a C, #14. Lose a PF.

Alaskan Classic vs. Iowa ST. A few decent teams and 3 ranked teams are willing to play us.

9/25: Got a PF, #8. We should be finished with recruiting, both are good students.

Baseballer Babe Ruth set a new home run record- 59. The previous record was 11. He is a dynamo!

10/2: 1st day of practice.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Junior Itag Mpeb is back at PG, but he has people who are ready to steal his minutes.

Soph Matt Ando is back at SG, subbing at PG. He looks very solid.

Frosh Pick Dura subs at both guard spots, and fellow frosh Jeb Chow subs at SG.

Senior Ara Smat is back at SF.

Senior Tobe Sand is back at PF, subbing at C.

Junior Mamo Shtu will start at C.

Junior Ed Howe subs at all 3 inside spots and wants to reclaim his starting spot at C.

The Fatty Arbuckle scandal ends with his acquittal but his movie career seems finished.

The Grayson Trust is operating in 25 cities and their suburbs across the country. Millions are being helped in one way or another. Dorothea and her allies have convinced many corporations, business leaders, and other citizens to donate to the cause, and the Trust manages several hundred million dollars. It’s incredible!

11/20: 2-0 start. Ranked #11. Sand and Smat both looked very, very good in both games.

Both recruits sign.

11/23: We beat #25 Miami. We’re headed to the Alaskan Classic by aeroplane. We’re the #1 seed. We play #8 Iowa ST, 2-1.

11/25: 76-50. 6 players made strong contributions on O and we played great D.

#4 seed Fresno ST, 3-0, in the semifinal game.

11/26: 73-52. 18, 11 for Sand, 19, 5, 5 for Ando. +11 RBs.

#2 seed, #14 ranked BYU, 4-1, for the title. We beat them by 22 in the season opener, their only loss so far.

11/27: 86-66. 21 for Ando, 13, 16 for Sand. +13 RBs, 8 TOs.

#6 ranked.

2 lineup changes, Jeb Chow is starting at the Point for Mpeb, and Moe Owen is getting about half of Ed Howe’s remaining minutes, after starter Mamo Shtu gets several of them.

12/11: 9-0, #4, RPI #2. Our highest ranking ever.

12/25: 11-0, #5, RPI #1. +20.0 PPG, +9.9 RBs, +6.2 TOs. We’re really playing well. 6 ranked teams in the SEC at this point, so conf. play could be a challenge!

1/1/1922: 13-0, 2-0, #5, RPI #1. We start SEC play with 2 easy wins. #2 Kentucky, here, next week.

1/15: 16-1, 5-1, #6, RPI #2. Kentucky beat us by 5 in a game where foul trouble hurt us. They went to the line 27 times, we went 6. Ando fouled out in 16 minutes, Sand and Shtu both wound up with 4, and played limited minutes due to fouls. 19, 4, 6 for Chow, 19, 4, 3 for Smat.

1/29: 19-2, 8-2, #5, RPI #3. We lost at #11 Missouri. +16.6 PPG, +7.8 RBs, +5.5 TOs. We’re alone in 2nd, 1 back of KY, 1 up on 2 teams. Everyone else seems to be out of the chase.

Tobe Sand is #29 on the Norton list, once again underrated.

2/12: 23-2, 12-2. #5, RPI #2. Still 1 back of 1st but now 2 up on 3rd, with 4 to play. 3 of the last 4 are at home but the 4th is at #2 Kentucky, so we’ll probably end up 2nd.

Our lineup has definitely stabilized. No changes for weeks and weeks.

The huge Armaments Conference ended. It outlawed poison gas and restricted submarine attacks on merchant vessels. This is a very good thing if it is honored.

2/26: We end the regular season at 26-3, 13-3, alone in 2nd. +16.5 PPG, +8.8 RBs, +4.6 TOs. Ara Smat leads us in scoring with 15.9. Tobe Sand leads in RBs with 9.1.

3/7: We’ll play #7 seed Alabama, 18-10, 9-9, in the quarter finals. We beat them by 29 at our place.

3/8: 95-68. 23, 7, 4 for Ando, and he had a lot of help. +15 RBs, 11 TOs.

#3 seed Missouri, 23-6, 13-5, in the semifinal round. They shellacked us by 20 there. We think we’re much better than we were that night and feel that if we play well we can beat them.

3/9: 87-73. We were up 19 at the half. 27, 5 for Ando, 19, 12 for Sand. 11 TOs.

As expected it is #1 seed, #2 ranked Kentucky, 29-3, 16-2, for the title. They beat us by the exact same score, 65-70, both here and there, so we don’t need to get a great deal better. But they are VERY good.

3/10: 63-71. They went on a 172 run at the end of the 1st half to take a 13 point lead. We couldn’t catch them. 17 for Ando, 11, 10 for Sand, 14 for Smat. -8 RBs.

28-4, 15-3, #6, RPI #3.

3/12: #1 West. We play 17-15 Northern Kentucky. This is a bracket where we should do well!

3/17: It was a mismatch, but 39 points? 25, 11 for Sand, 18, 10 for Smat, and those two outscored the entire other team! +16 RBs. We were sloppy, though, 16 TOs.

#9 seed Wisconsin, 19-11, in round 2. They lost their starting PG to grades and have not been the same team since.

3/19: 88-58. 20, 4, 12 for PG Jeb Chow, 24, 4, 5 for Ando. We took advantage of their weakness at guard. 9 TOs.

#4 seed, #19 ranked Oregon, 23-9, in the Sweet Sixteen. We beat them by 17 here in December.

3/24: 9-80. It was a shootout and we had the bigger guns. 21 for Ando, 17, 3, 8 for Chow, who is playing really well. 3 others with 10 or more. +9 RBs, 9 TOs.

#2 seed Louisville, 30-5, in the Elite Eight. They are big and good inside.

We’d LOVE to return to the Final Four!

3/26: 81-79. Terrific game. Our backcourt and bench won it for us- barely. 15 each for Chow and Ando, and 11 more from #3 guard Mpeb. Sand had 12 and 11 and Smat had 11, but their front court dominated ours. On the final play we went to our best, Tobe Sand, and he managed a dunk in traffic. They didn’t have time to get a shot off, only a ¾ court throw.

We’re back in the Final Four!

All 4 #1 seeds made it here. We play #3 ranked Syracuse, 33-3. They lost their #3 guard to grades but they adjusted very well. This is a VERY good team.

On the other side it’s #1 Michigan ST, 35-2, vs. #2 Kentucky, 34-3.

4/1: 79-63! We never trailed. Ando had 22, 4, 4, Chow had 14. Sand had 9 and 12. Our bench outscored them by 9 and out rebounded them by 4.

We play #1 ranked Michigan ST, 36-2, for the national title. They are #1 for a reason. They’re strong at every position and they are deep as well. We’ll need to really, really be at our very best, and hope that they are not.

4/3: 62-68. We had our chances. We knew the key was to hold the score down, and we did that, but their D was outstanding. A couple of bad calls late didn’t help, but the ref didn’t beat us. Poor free throw shooting was a factor though, 13-23; that’s terrible. 20 TOS was the biggest factor; it allowed them 14 more shots from the field. 14, 11 for Shtu, 17 for Ando, but both he and Chow had 8 TOs. We did what we could and I couldn’t be prouder of my team.

4/4: Awards: Once again, the SEC honors me with Conf. COY, but disrespects my players. Ara Smat is the only player honored, making 2nd team. I do not understand how Tobe Sand could have been overlooked, and I am being quite public about my disappointment!

Dorothea brings up the point that we may wish to consider moving. She says there are places we could go to that would make her work easier. I have no desire to leave UMass, but her career is certainly a consideration. I would love to win a national title here though, and I think we’re close, even losing Smat and Sand. We have the #8 and the #14 big men coming in, and everyone else is back. Let’s see what sorts of offers we get.

4/9: Our TP is up to 82, so it will be difficult to find a team. But someone with a half million dollar budget and A level facilities would make me ponder.

Florida and Memphis call. Then LSU and Stanford. The only one of interest would be Stanford but that’s not a step up. We have no interest in living in a hot climate. Louisville calls. Again, too darned hot.

We’re staying.

Something called the “Teapot Dome Scandal” is going on in Washington. It’s brand new but Josephus says it involves the president’s close advisors using their positions to make huge sums of money illegally. He says it is no surprise since Harding is such a fool, and he says it will bring him down.

4/16: We need to hire a #1 and a #2. Always stressful. Hired.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. Had to spend a lot on assistants. No.

Great season, 33-5, title game! Overall, I’m 400-108, .787.

5/1: We buy the East gold, national and international basic.

Preseason #12.

6/5: We have a slot for a transfer and there are some VERY good ones.

6/12: We get a PF from Wisconsin who looks very good.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We want 2 guards.

Not many PGs out there. Always seems to work that way when we need them!

Tobe Sand goes #23 and Ara Smat #37 in the pro draft. The barnstorm league isn’t very good to the players and doesn’t pay well but it does often open up opportunities for coaching jobs down the line. It is a difficult life, though. I wish my boys well.

8/7: Matt Ando is #30 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to a PG, an SG, and a C.

9/18: Got 2, lost one. We got the big prize, the #1 recruit, a C. Got a PG, #11. We want another guard.

Preseason NIT vs. #24 LSU. Top teams still will not play us.

9/25: Got a PG, #17. All 3 are good students so we should be finished.

10/2: 1st day of practice. I think we’ll do well. I like what I see.

We’re picked to finish 2nd, behind #2 ranked Kentucky.

Benito Mussolini, who seems to be an absolute maniac, is now the ruler of Italy.

11/6: 9 man rotation:

3 players fighting it out at guard, Soph Jeb Chow will start at PG, sub at SG. Junior Matt Ando will start at SG. Senior Itag Mpeb will get equal time with the others, most at PG, some at SG Pick Dura is waiting for his chance.

Soph Adam Mase is at SF, but both soph Luis Rhye and frosh Marq Stow will get minutes.

Senior Mamo Shtu is at PF, subbing at C.

Junior Moe Owen is at C. enior Ed Howe has lost his starting job, at least for now. He’s subbing at PF.

11/13: We start at the NIT vs. #24 LSU.

11/14: 66-58. 8, 18 for Shtu, 14 for Ando, 10, 8 for Owen, 9, 6, 7 for Chow. +19 RBs.

#2 seed, #6 ranked UCLA in the 2nd round. They’re good. So are we.

11/16: 68-60. 23 for Chow, 6, 12 for Shtu. +10 RBs, we’re averaging 53.

#3 seed, #11 ranked Indiana in the semifinal game. Another good team.

11/18: 64-56. 24, 5 for Ando, 14, 5, 4 for Chow, 9, 8 for Center Moe Owen. Weird, three 8 point wins in a row. +15 RBs, but 23 TOs.

#1 seed, #3 ranked Duke for the title.

11/20: 61-60 and the title! Back and forth all night. We had the last run, ending the game on a 9-2 run. It was a defensive battle and our D did not let us down. Stats were close in all categories. 11, 10 for Owen, 10, 9 for Ando, 12 for Chow. We beat 4 ranked teams to win this!

All 3 recruits sign.

Someone named Howard Carter, exploring in the Egyptian pyramids, has found the tomb of ancient King Tut. These seems to be something quite important.

The Teapot Dome Scandal is the talk of the country. President Harding looks like a fool, and seems to have no sensible response to what has happened.

Prohibition continues to be a nightmare. The country seems to be undergoing a years long drinking spree.

12/4: 8-0, #3, RPI #2. Ando, Owen and Chow lead us in scoring. Owen and Shtu each get 9.3 RBs per game.

12/25: 12-0, +13.2 PPG, 11.7 RBs, +3.7 TOs. #5, RPI #3.

1/1/1923: 2 easy wins to begin SEC play.

1/15: 17-1, 5-1, #6, RPI #3. We beat #2 Kentucky here by 8, but #16 Missouri beat us there.

We’re tied for 1st with KY, 5 teams 1 back. It’s early.

Little used Eric Hays sprained a finger. Out about 10 days.

1/29: 20-2, 8-2. #6, RPI #3. +12.4 PPG, +10.5 RBs, +4.2 TOs. Tied for 2nd, 1 back of 1st. We lost by 1 at LSU on a throw from 55 feet.
Matt Ando is #20 on the Norton list.

2/12: 24-2, 12-2, #5, RPI #4. Alone in 2nd, 1 back of #3 KY, 1 up on #12 Missouri.

Ando strained a calf muscle. He’ll miss one game.

2/26: We end the regular season at 27-3, 15-3, alone in 2nd. +10.8 PPG, +9.4 RBs, +4.3 TOs.

Let’s see how far we can go in the post season!

3/7: We play #7 seed Alabama, 15-14, 10-8, in the quarter finals. We won by 24 here.

3/8: 62-49. 15, 8 for Howe at SF, 7, 16 for Owen, 13 for Ando, 10 RBs for Shtu. +13 RBs.

#3 seed, #13 ranked Missouri, 22-6, 14-4, in the semifinals. They won by 16 there, and we won by only 3 at our place. It shapes up to be a battle.

3/9: 76-72. A battle it was! 26, 10 for Ando, 12, 5, 9 for Chow, 10, 9 for Owen, 10, 6 for Howe. +8 RBs. We won late, scoring 10 of the last 14.

It’s #1 seed, #3 ranked Kentucky, 29-3, 16-2, again for the title. We won by 8 here but got destroyed there. They are very, very good.

3/10: 62-69. It was close until very late. 22, 3, 4 for Chow, 15, 9 for Ando, but he fouled out with 3 ½ to go and that did us in. 13, 9 for Owen. These three got all but 12 of our points, and that was the biggest problem.

29-4, 15-3, #6, RPI #5. It looks like a 2. Hoping for a #1, or a 2 on day 2.

3/12: #1 West! Thrilled! We play 14-17 South Carolina Upstate.

3/17: 74-56. Closer than expected. 20-16 for Owen12, 13 for Shtu, 14, 4, 5 for Chow. +21 RBs, +10 TOs.

Our 5th 30 win season, 4 of the last 5.

#9 seed Iowa, 19-11, in round 2. We beat only 9 in December.

3/19: 73-64. It was close for 35 minutes. 22, 4, 3 for Chow, 17, 5 for Ando, 15, 6, 3 for Owen, 10, 11 for Shtu. 2 TOs.

We’re not quite clicking as smoothly as I would like.

#5 seed, #23 ranked Georgia Tech, 22-10, in the Sweet Sixteen. They’re better than their record indicates.

3/24: 72-61. They battled us hard. Midway through the 2nd half we took control. 30 for Ando, 10, 13 for Owen, 15, 1, 7 for Chow, 8, 10 for Shtu. Too many TOs- 19.

#2 seed, #5 ranked Duke, 30-6, in the Elite Eight. We beat them by 1 for the preseason NIT title. We need to control the inside, that’s where they’re stronger.

Can we get to the Final Four 3 years in a row?

3/26: 57-75. Ouch! They held us to 32.9% shooting, had 12 threes to our 3, and simply outplayed us. 22, 9 for Owen, 14, 5, 5 for Chow, 10, 8 for Ando, but no one else did a thing on O, and we simply couldn’t keep up.

4/3: #3 Kentucky, from the SEC, upset the #1 team in the semifinals and then defeated Duke by 5 for the title.

4/4: Awards: Junior C Moe Owen is SEC Def. POY, and 1st team. Junior Matt Ando made 2nd. I was Conf. COY again.

4/9: Once again, we would consider the right offer.

Nothing interesting.

4/16: No coaches to hire.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. Got $16,000, which is much needed.

5/1: We buy the national gold.

Preseason #7. This is a team that could go all the way!

6/5: 1 spot for a transfer.

We’re passing.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We’ll go 1 and 2 either way.

8/2: President Harding is dead. He contracted an illness after a trip to Alaska, and never recovered. Many say this was related to the stress of the Teapot
Dome Scandal, for which he had no answers.

Calvin Coolidge is President. Josephus describes him as a man of little to know competence, and without a trace of a personality.

Still, the economy is booming.

8/7: C Will Seer is #10, PG Matt Ando #25, and PG Jeb Chow #41 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to 2 Cs and a PG.

9/18: We get 2 Cs, #7, #14, lose the PG.

No in season tournament this year. We manage to add 3 ranked teams but good teams still do not want to play us.

An attempted coup in Germany. The leader, a man named Hitler, is arrested and jailed.

9/25: We get a PG, #30.

10/2: 1st day of practice. I love this team.

We’re picked to win the conf.

11/6: 10 man rotation, SF is completely unsettled, and there will be changes at guard:

Junior Jeb Chow is aback at PG but lots of minutes to both senior Matt Ando, who starts at SG, and junior Pick Dura, backing up at PG. Dura and frosh Al Beln back up at SG as well.

SF is wide open. Senior Moe Owen starts, and soph Eric Hays and Marq Stow get lots of minutes.

Junior Adam Mase is solid at PF, subs at C. Soph Jon Ward subs at PF.

Frosh Will Seer is at C.

We’re tabbed 1st in the SEC and #5 overall in the latest pools, and I think we can do that. The goal is the national title.
