3/9: #9 seed South Florida, 13-15, 6-12, won the play in. We beat them by 24 here but then they won by 6 there.

3/10: 76-61. 21, 11, 6 for Jett, 16, 5 for guard Paul Hask from the bench, 14 for Smey. 12 RBs for Gloe. +11 RBs.

#5 seed Temple, 14-14, 10-8, in the semifinals. We won by 8 here, lost by 6 there, so it will be a challenge.

3/11: 79-51. We were red hot. 36-18 at the half. 18, 12 for Smey, 19 for Brax. +11 RBs, 8 TOs.

#3 seed Cincinnati, 22-8, 12-6, for the title. They gave us our worst defeat of the year there, then we won by 11 here. We think we’re the better team though.

3/12: 60-45 and the title! 37-18 at the half. 15, 11 for Smey. 13 RBs for Gloe.

25-6, 14-4, #17, RPI #15, AA champs. Hoping for a #3 seed.

#4 Midwest. We play Penn, 22-7. They’re a good team. We need to play well.

3/16: 83-63. We played well! 21, 4, 8 for Jett, 17 for Smey, 15 each for Joon and Braz, 11 RBs for Gloe.

#5 seed, #18 ranked Arizona, 25-7, in the 2nd round. This is a very good team.

3/18: 68-59! 17, 12 for Smey, 17, 7, 5 for Jett. We were down as many as 10 early, but we really played well in the 2nd half.

We’re in the Sweet Sixteen for only the 2nd time but our opponent is #1 seed, #2 ranked Michigan ST, 34-1. It would take something very special for us to beat this team. They are very, very good.

3/23: 61-92. Whew! They were simply too god.

There is a new thing called a tank being used in the war. It seems to get bloodier and more terrible by the day. So many are dying and being horribly wounded.

4/3: #1 Kansas is the champ.

4/4: Awards: Senior Tev Jett was AA POY, Def POY, and 1st team. Junior Kyle Smey also made 1st team. Senior Jim Gloe made 2nd team. I was named Conf. COY.

4/16: We need to hire a #2 assistant. We get a mediocre one.

4/23: I ask for one more budget increase. Got it, but not quite enough to buy the national gold. It will take one more increase.

27-7, 14-4, Sweet Sixteen. Overall, I’m 226-69, .766.

5/1: We buy the East gold, and national and international basic reports again.

6/5: We see some transfers we like. We had a PF transfer out so we have a spot. He was not in our plans.

6/12: No luck.

6/26: 6 scholarships. We’ll probably try for 3 and 3.

8/21: We offer to 3 PGs, 2 PFs, and a C.

Horrible battles in Europe- The Somme, Verdun, and others. The death toll is just getting worse and worse, and so many of those being gassed are perhaps fortunate if they do not survive the attack. There has never been anything like this war.

The U. S. just purchased the Virgin Islands.

9/18: Wow! Got 4, lost 2. Got a PF, #47, a PG, #57, a PG, #66, a PF, #172.

Coaches Classic vs. #19 Wisconsin. Competitive schedule.

9/25: Got one, lost one. Got a PG, #73. We need an inside player.

10/2: Got the PF, #162.

1st day of practice. I’m not certain whether we’re as good as we were last season.

We’re predicted to finish 5th in conf. We’ll do better than that.

11/6: 10 man rotation. Lots of things are still to be decided:

Soph Jay Brax is back at the Point. Senior Raul Angi starts at SG.

Frosh Ed Hays subs at PG, and senior Lin Card subs at SG.

SF is our most unsettled position. Junior Sid Maye starts there and subs at PF. Junior Adam Flin, soph Ward Joon, and frosh Ken Bows will all get minutes at SF.

Frosh Clif Mill starts at PF and subs at C. Senior Kyle Smey is back at C.

11/7: Woodrow Wilson is re-elected in a close race. He promised to keep us out of the war. Josephus says that’s not going to happen. He feels we’ll be in it next year.

Jeannette Rankin is elected as the first woman in Congress. She will represent Montana. She is a suffragist. That movement is growing by leaps and bounds. Flora finds it very interesting. I have no objection. I believe women should have more freedoms and that they should vote.

John D. Rockefeller is officially a billionaire, the first in the country. Our family is getting close to that mark, but as a family, not individually.

11/13: 66-65 over #5 seed, #19 ranked Wisconsin. 20 lead changes, 8 ties. In the end we got it to PG Jay Brax and he worked off a screen to make a 17 footer. He had 23.

#4 seed, #12 ranked Utah in the 2nd round. This will not be easy, but their PF and best player pulled a groin and will miss the game.

11/15: 70-65! We led by as many as 14, but they were very good, and they never quit. 16, 4, 3 for Smey, 10 and 9 for both SF Sid Maye, and PF Clif Mill. A great win

#1 seed, #2 ranked Kentucky in the semifinal round. This is an incredible team. I just hope to keep it reasonably close.

11/17: 48-62. They are terrific, but we kept it fairly close. 13, 12 for Mill, 14 for Brax.

11/20: 2-1, #25

All 6 recruits sign.

12/4: 5-2, RPI #20. We lost to a very good Pitt team by 2, beat #12 Missouri by 11. Ball handling is our weakness, 15.9 TOs per game. Brax, who is now at SG, is our leading scorer. We replaced Sid Maye at SF with Ward Joon. Mill and Smey are playing well.

2 top 10 teams this week, both at home.

12/11: Texas crushed us. We crushed Marquette.

12/25: 8-3, RPI #.9 +5.9 PPG, +3.1 RBs, +0.8 TOs.

Horrible news as the year comes to a close. An avalanche in Italy killed as many as 10,000 Austrian and Italian soldiers. The war shows not the slightest side of ending, and I fear we will be in it soon. Again, I am so happy that my sons are so young!

1/1/1917: 1 game week. We beat always tough Cincy here, by 10. Smey, Mill, and Angi did the damage. Ball handling is an issue it does not look like we’re
going to fix this season. We have three very good looking guards coming in next year though.

1/15: 13-4, 5-1, #25, RPI #12. Tied for 1st with Memphis. We lost at UConn, beat everyone else easily. Still trying to figure out SF, but the other 4 positions are very solid; we’re giving Adam Flin more time. He and Joon are sharing the spot for now. Ball handling is slowly getting slightly better.

1/29: 17-5, 9-2, #21, RPI #16. +7.3 PPG, +5.4 RBs, +1.9 TOs. 1 ½ game lead in the AA> We’re playing really well right now.

Back up guard Lin Card strained abdominals. He’s out for about 10 days. Ed Hays will pick up his minutes.

2/3: The U. S. has cut diplomatic ties with Germany. War will come very soon now.

2/12: 19-6, 11-3, #20, RPI #16. TOs are down to 13.8. That’s not good, but it’s better than it was. Three way battle for the lead in the AA. Memphis and Cincy are breathing down our necks. Everyone else is out of it. 4 to play, 3 on the road, but none against the leaders.

Ward Joon strained a hamstring. Out for about 10 days.

2/26: We end the regular season at 22-7, 14-4, 2nd place tie, one back of Cincy, #2 seed. #18, RPi #13. +8.5 PPG, +6.5 RBs, +2.9 TOs (13.4).

A revolution is underway in Russia. It looks like Czar Nicholas will be swept from power.

3/9: We play #7 seed Tulsa, 11-18, 7-11, in the quarter finals. Their starting PG is out with a broken nose. We won by 9 here, lost by 1 there.

3/10: 87-58. 45-22 at the half. 22 for Angi, 20 for Smey. +10 RBs, only 7 TOs.

1st place Cincy was upset.

#3 seed Memphis, 18-10, 14-4, in the semifinals. We won by 12 at home. The winner of this game will likely win the tournament. We’re expecting a battle!

3/11: 64-68. They took an early 13 point lead and we chased them all night. We took the lead twice, but couldn’t hold it. Their SF had 38; we simply couldn’t stop him. +14 RBs, but 17 TOs.

If we’re going to take the next step up we need to win these games. We also need to get more top 30 recruits.

3/12: Memphis won the tournament.

We’re 23-8, 14-4, #19, RPI #17. Hoping for a #4.

#5 Midwest. We play the winner of the play in, St. Louis, 23-11. They have some injury problems.

3/16: 76-73. We escaped by going on a 12-1 run to end the game. They missed the front of 1 and 1s, and missed both free throws 3 times, while we converted. 22, 19 for Mill, his best career game. 15, 7 for Flin. +19 RBs, only 6 TOs.

#4 seed, #11 ranked Oklahoma ST, 24-9, in round 2. Their leading scorer is out with a broken finger, but they’re still tough.

3/18: 55-54. Great game! Smey had 17 and 9. +8 RBs, +4 TOs. It was back and forth, close all the way. We were up 1 with less than 5 seconds to play when
Mill stole a pass, threw it up court to Angi, who then dribbled out the clock before anyone could catch up to him.

#1 seed, #3 ranked Georgetown, 32-2, in the Sweet Sixteen. They’re good, and they’re deep. This is a big challenge.

3/23: 67-86. They built a 23 point lead and we couldn’t put much of a dent in it.

We seem stuck at this level for now. We need to move up.

4/3: #1 Kansas is the champ.

4/4: Awards: Senior Kyle Smey is AA POY, Def. POY, and 1st team. Clif Mill is Frosh OY and 1st team. Soph Jay Brax made 2nd team. I got the coach award.

4/6: Well, it is here. The President just declared war on Germany and her allies.

4/16: We hire a decent #1.

4/23: The #1 cost us some money so I’m asking for a budget increase. Got it! I’m surprised.

25-9, 14-4. Overall, I’m 251-78, .763, for 10 seasons. Again, we’re at a standstill. We need to find a way to move to the next level.

5/1: We buy the national gold, for the first time.

The word is that troop preparations are moving rapidly. We expect to send our first troops to Europe in June.

6/5: Some really good transfers.

6/12: We get a fantastic PG from Cincy. Now to get him eligible.

6/16: We get a very good SF from Georgia Tech. We did very well!

6/26: 2 scholarships. We need inside players.

The 1st U. S. troops have arrived in Europe, under the command of Gen. Pershing.

8/21: We offer to a PF and a C.

Americans are dying in the trenches. I hope it brings about a swift ending of the war. The hope is that our entry will shift the balance of power enough to do that.

9/18: We lose one.

NIT vs. #13 Oregon. Competitive schedule.

9/25: Got a PF, #24, and a C, #35. We should be finished.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We may be a little thin at guard be we are very strong inside.

11/6: 9 man rotation:

Junior Jay Brax and frosh Bob Bett start at guard with soph Ed Hays backing up.

Senior Sid Maye starts at SF, backs up at PF. He couldn’t hold the position last year. Three men back up at SF: senior Adam Flin and juniors Ward Joon and Nate Hart.

Frosh Pat Moss starts at PF and backs up at C.

Soph Clif Mill, who may be our best player, is at C.

We’re picked to win the conference and I think that’s realistic.

The bloodiest war in human history continues with no end in sight.

11/13: We open at the NIT vs. #3 seed, #13 ranked Oregon. We’re the #14 seed.

11/14: 65-61. Close all the way. 22, 6 for SG Bob Bett, 19, 8 for PF Pat Moss, 16 for C Clif Mill. WE held them to 30.3%. But 18 TOs.

#6 seed, #11 ranked Pitt in round 2.

Word is slowly coming out of Russia that there is a revolution in progress, and that the Czar is about to be, or perhaps already has been, removed from power and executed.

11/16: 66-77. They’re top 3 guards had 49, our top 3 had 27. And we had 17 TOs.

11/20: Both recruits signed.

12/4: 5-1, RPI #14. The TOs are down to 11.8. Bett, Moss, and Mill are doing the scoring, and Mill is getting 9.2 RBs per. Ed Hays is playing better than Brax and getting the start. Nate Hart is now starting at SF.

12/25: We go to conference play at 8-2, #23, RPI #7. +5.2 PPG, +5.3 RBs, +2.7 TOs. Bett, Mill, and Moss continue to lead the way.

The 18th Amendment is passed, prohibiting the purchase and sale of alcoholic beverages. This is idiocy raised to a level that is all but unimaginable.

Mata Hari, a very famous spy for the Germans, has been captured and educated. She did a great deal of harm to our side.

As we head to a new year the war drags on, and the casualties mount.

I was approached and offered a commission as a Major in the U. S. Army. When I refused it on the grounds that I have seven children, and an eighth due in April, my patriotism was questioned. I showed the “gentlemen” the door very quickly at that point! The thought of my children losing a parent, or having me come back to them as an invalid, is appalling. As a matter of fact the entire notion of this, or almost any war, is appalling.

1/1/1918: 2-0 start to AA play. We defeated #12 Memphis here, but only by 5.

1/15: 13-3, 5-1, #21, RPI #5. We’re alone in 2nd, 1 back of 1st, 1 up on 3rd. It’s early but it looks like Cincy, Central FL, and us, with Memphis perhaps being in the mix.

1/29: 16-4, 8-2, #20, RPI #8. +4.0 PPG, +6.1 RBs, +1.1 TOs. Tied for 1st, 1 up on 3rd place UConn, 3 or more up on the rest.

Brax is playing better and getting more minutes. We’re still adjusting at SF.

2/12: 17-6, 9-4, tied for 2nd. #22, RPI #13. We hit some bumps in the road and lost some tough away games. The rest of the schedule is favorable though.

2/26: We end the regular season 21-7, 13-5, alone in 2nd, but 3 back of 1st place Cincy. +5.0 PPG, +6.7 RBs, +1.7 TOs. #19, RPI #14. Clif Flin wound up leading us in everything except assists.

3/9: #10 seed SMU, 12-16, 6-12, won the play in, in an upset. We won by only 1 there, but 14 here.

3/10: 83-69. It wasn’t close. 21 for Mill, 13, 6 for Moss, good bench play. 10 TOs.

#3 seed Houston, 20-8, 12-6, in the semifinals. We won by 6 here then lost by 20 there so we need to be sharp.

3/11: 67-55. Balance! 6 players scored between 8 and 12. We led by 11 at the half and by as many as 17. Only 11 TOs.

#5 seed Memphis, 20-10, 9-9, shocked #1 Cincy. We’ll play them for the title. We won by 5 here, lost by 14 there.

3/12: 66-75. 23, 11 for Mill, but he didn’t get much help. 3 pointers were the difference; we had 3, they had 9.

23-8, 13-5, #19, RPI #12.

#4 West. We play #13 Ohio, 19-13. Not a terrible bracket.

3/17: SHOCKED! 69-79. We were up 7 with 17:22 to go and then it just fell apart. We went 4 for 19 from that point on, and 7-15 on free throws. Made 1 three. Tough way to end the season. If there’s a bright side it is that we’re losing no one who plays much and we have 4 excellent prospects coming in.

3/20: The U. S. now has official time zones. This is a much needed thing!

There some sort of influenza going around. It seems to be harsher than the normal flu that strikes people.

4/3: #1 Kansas wins it all again.

4/4: Awards: Soph Clif Mill makes AA 1st team. Frosh Pat Moss makes 2nd.

The influenza is now called “Spanish flu” and it is taking a huge toll in the U. S. and abroad.

4/9: NC ST wants us. They are very persuasive but I still hope to reach the next level here. I think we may have the talent to do that next season.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade. No.

23-9, 13-5. Overall, I’m 274-87, .759.

4/27: I lost Flora, and the baby she was carrying to the Spanish influenza, last night. She became sick a few days ago, and she just couldn’t fight it off. The doctors said if she hadn’t been pregnant it might have made a difference.

I am left with 7 sons to raise. How in the world will I manage? My first thoughts are that I am so grateful to have the wonderful servants we have had for so many years. The children know and love them, so that will be a help. The second thought is that my children will need a mother. I need to mourn first, of course. The thought of bringing a new woman into my life is just not possible for me now, but I do realize that it is something I will need to consider in the future. All of my money is meaningless in the face of this.

The other thought is, thank goodness I declined the commission in the U. S. Army!

5/1: I buy the national gold.

My mind is not on coaching. I do what I can but I am allowing my assistants to do most of what needs to be done.

The children have questions I cannot answer regarding their mother.

The flu has claimed one of my brothers and a sister, as well as a brother-in-law. I’m told millions are dying around the world, and those who survive are terribly weakened.

Our family has come together in support of each other. Family members have set up a schedule to take turns being here to help with the children.

5/17:Airmail service begins. It’s hard to believe how far aviation has come in under 14 years. I understand aeroplanes are used in the war in various ways.

6/5: Ken Bows and Sam Jonn have transferred out. Bows would have played some. Jonn would not.

That leaves 2 roster spots. Looking at transfers. There are 2 we like.

6/12: No luck.

6/26: 5 scholarships. We want 2 guards, 3 inside players.

7/15: I’m told there are more than a million American troops fighting in Europe. It also seems the tide is beginning to shift in our favor. I just hope all the bloodshed ends this year.

8/7: I have my first 2 Norton candidates! PG Drew Lee is #25, and PF Tobe Sand is #48.

The word out of Russia is that Czar Nicholas and his entire family were executed.

8/15: The influenza epidemic has now killed more than 20 million, including more than a half million here in the U. S. That does not ease the pain of
losing my beloved Flora. I miss her every moment.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, 3 Cs.

9/18: Got 3, lost 2. Got A C, #24, a PG, #39, a C, #43. We gambled on #3 and lost him.

Coaches Classic vs. Fresno ST. Tough schedule.

9/25: Got a C, #60, lost a PG. We still need a guard.

10/2: Got the PG, #51. Got class if we get them all. 2 are questionable.

1st day of practice. This will be the best team I’ve ever coached.

Rumors of end of war but the killing goes on.

11/6: Here the lineup, but there are lots of uncertainties in the 10 man rotation:

PG is wide open. Junior Ed Hays starts, but both senior Jay Brax and soph Bob Bett get almost as many minutes. These three will need to work it out.

I thought junior Drew Leed, a transfer from Cincy, would be our PG, and in the end he may be, but he is a terrific shooter, and his ball handling was weak at
PG. He is our best player, and will start at SG. The other three will back him up there.

SF, as usual, is also up for grabs. Senior Ward Joon will start, and fellow senior Nate Hart, and junior Asaf Hoff, a very good looking transfer from Ga. Tech, will back up.

We are settled inside, with frosh Tobe Sand at PF, and junior Clif Mill back at C. Soph Pat Moss will back up inside.

We’re expected to win the conference and I believe we will. I also believe we can be a contender in the national race, though probably a year away from a real challenge.

We begin at the Coaches Classic with Fresno ST.

11/11: PEACE!!! At 11:11 a.m. today, the war officially ended. Wonderful news!

Friends and family are encouraging me to remarry quickly. When invited to dinner there is always a "free" woman included, no doubt in hopes that she will catch my eye. I am simply not ready, and not at all interested. I am 46 years old. I love my 7 sons, and I want what is best for them. They range in age from 12 to nearly 6, and yes, I suppose a loving mother's influence would be good, but I cannot do it. As I have said, our wonderful servants, who have been part of their lives since their births, fill many gaps. I am torn on this, but I will certainly not marry, nor will I encourage any woman to think that I might, until and unless my feelings change. It would be terribly unfair to all concerned. Am I lonely? Yes, I am. But I dare not fall into the trap of marrying in order to ease that condition.

I work less, simply because I feel that my boys need me to spend time with them. But I have capable assistants, and everything is going well with the team.

Josephus says each of the brothers and sisters in his and my family is now worth nearly a half billions dollars. That seems ridiculous and disgusting to me. I regularly ponder ways- and ask Josephus to ponder ways that we may do more good with our fortunes. He replies that we provide jobs to many, many people, and we pay the highest wages in the various industries, and treat our workers well.

That's all well and good but I want to do more. No one needs the amount of money we possess.
