Historical Association #4

11/20: 2-0 start but these are pretty awful teams. Center Ron Liva’s our guy so far, but PG Vic Lews is moving the ball well.

All 3 recruits sign, but I’m still waiting for #4 to commit.

We’re off to the WS Midwest vs. Wyoming.

11/21: 69-70. We had the last possession, we got a good shot, we missed it. They beat us outside, 14 threes to our 6.

Liva played well again. Sub Jin Jaro is playing really well. We’re giving him more minutes.

12/4: 4-2, RPI #142. Liva is still playing very well.

12/11: Edward VIII abdicates. George VI is the new king of England.

12/25: 7-2, RPI #128. +12.2 PPG, +4.4 RBs, +4.0 TOs. Liva leads us with 16.1, 7.9. At least so far, all 7 who are getting minutes are playing well. Our two subs don’t hurt us at all.

Keep in mind that we played a VERY weak pre-conf. schedule.

Turmoil between the fascists and the communists seems to get uglier and more threatening every day.

1/1/1937: 9-2, 2-0. These were not top teams but I’ll take the wins!

1/15: 11-4, 4-2. Only one bad loss in conf., so far. Du Froe is really playing well. He now leads us in RBs.

1/29: 12-7, 5-5. RPI #89. +3.7 PPG, +2.8 RBs, -0.6 TOs. In a 4 way tie for 6th in conf. We lost another game we should have won. We’ve lost our last 3, 4 of 5.

2/12: 13-10, 6-8. The wheels have fallen off the trolley. Alone in 9th place, and the rest of the schedule is not favorable. 6 losses in our last 7.

2/26: We end the regular season 15-12, 8-10, RPI #116, alone in 8th place. +1.0 PPG, +0.4 RBs, -0.4 TOs.

3/6: We play #9 seed Alabama, 17-12, 7-11, in the quarters. They won by 19 there in the regular season.

3/7: 66-75. We had 5 whop scored between 10 and 15 points, but they made 14 threes, we made 8.

15-13, 8-10, RPI #131. Will we be invited anywhere? Doubtful.

3/12: (Author’s Note: The game says we’re in the WOL vs. Bethune-Cookman, 15-13. When I go to the post season tournaments we’re not there. But the game comes up on 3/14.)

3/14: 67-49. 19, 7, 8, 4, 2 for SG Dan cage, 16, 5 for C Ron Liva. +6 TOs.

Since this tournament won’t show up, I have no idea what seed we are. Next up is Alabama ST, 17-13.

3/16: 66-54. 14, 9 for Liva, 14 for PG Vic Lews, 6, 11, 4 for SF Rown Gare.

20-11 Western Illinois for the title.

3/21: 64-55. A terrible season ends very well! 17 for Lews, 10, 9, 3 for Cage, 12 for Liva, 10 for PF Du Froe. +10 TOs.

4/3: #1 Florida wins it all.

4/4: Awards: SF Du Froe is named SEC Frosh OY.

4/9: TP went up 2 points, no doubt because of our post season tourney wins.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. We get $13,000.

18-14, 8-10. Overall, I’m 167-87, .657.

5/1: Southeast Gold, National Basic.

6/5: Very unimpressive transfer pool. We pass.

The Golden Gate Bridge is now open.

Neville Chamberlain is now Prime Minister of England.

6/26: 2 scholarships, for now.

7/3: Amelia Earhart’s plane disappears somewhere over the Pacific.

7/30: FDR’s plan to “pack” the Supreme Court fails.

8/21: We offer to a PG and a PF.

The war between Japan and China heats up.

9/18: Got both recruits, a PF, #53, and a PG, #61.

Coaches Classic vs. Oregon. Schedule is a little stronger this year.

10/2: 1st day of practice. This is a much stronger team than last year’s.

We’re picked 5th in the SEC.

11/6: Unusual, but 11 players will get playing time to start:

Junior Will Frie, a transfer from Temple, is at PG. Frosh Dave Baun backs up.

Frosh Dom Croy is at SG. Junior Dan Cage, and soph transfer Mod Ware back up.

Soph Du Froe is at SF with junior Ron Liva backing up.

Frosh Mike Toll is at PF. Soph Jin Jaro backs up at PF, and juco junior Mack Wall backs up at both PF and C.

Our best player, junior Cal Mims, a transfer from Syracuse, is at C.

11/13: We start at the Coaches Classic with #7 seed Oregon. We’re #10.

78-68. 15, 5, 6, 2, 2 for PG Will Frie, 13, 8 for C Cal Mims, 10, 11, 4 for SF Du Froe, 12, 9 for sub PF/C Mack Wall. +11 RBs.

#2 seed, #9 ranked Oklahoma in the quarter finals. Tough team.

11/15: 99-112. This was a real shootout, and in the end the other guys had too much ammunition. They beat us outside, 21 threes to our 13. 26, 17, 4 for Mims, 24, 6, 5 for Froe, 8, 3, 8 for Frie.

This game tells me that we will be competitive with top level teams.

11/20: 1-1.

Both recruits signed.

12/4: 5-1, RPI #41. Mims had 36 and 16 in a game this week, and Froe had 33, 10 in the other game. They are both playing excellent ball!

12/11: 7-1. Ranked! #23, RPI #11.

12/25: Heading for SEC play we’re 9-1, #24, RPI #14. +11.3 PPG, +10.6 RBs, -1.1 TOs. Mims leads us with 20.8, 11.7. Froe gets 17.4, 6.0.

1/1/1938: 1-1. Tough road win, then we lost to #7 ranked Florida.

1/15: 13-3, 4-2. #20, RPI #12. Mims still leads us with 22.2, 13.4.

1/17: Starting PG Dom Croy broke his leg. He’s out until mid March.

1/29: 16-4, 7-3, #21, RPI #12. +8.3 PPG, +10.1 RBs, -0.3 TOs. In a 2 way tie for 2nd in the SEC.

2/12: 19-5, 10-4. #20, RPI #13. Alone in 2nd, 1 ahead of 2 teams.

2/26: We end the regular season 22-6, 13-5, #20, RPI #13, alone in 2nd place. +8.0 PPGT, +12.2 RBs, -1.3 TOs. Mims leads us with 22.4, 13.9, #1 in the country in RBs.

3/7: We play #7 seed, Tennessee, 15-13, 9-9, in the quarters. We won in OT at our place, lost by 16 there, so this may be a tough match up for us.

3/8: 82-85. They scored the last 8 points as we missed the front of two one and ones in a row. 40, 15 for Mims, but he didn’t get much help.

22-7, 13-5, #23, RPI #13. Hoping for a #4 seed.

3/12: #4 West. We play #13 Weber ST, 24-7. Croy is back from his broken leg.

3/17: 78-74. They really put up a fight. 20 and 23 for Mims, 17, 4 for SG Will Frie, 14, 4 for SF Du Froe. +16 RBs.

#5 seed UConn, 25-8, in the 2nd round. They’re strong inside. As a head coach I’ve never made it past the 2nd round.

3/19: 80-64! 16, 11 for Mims, 20 for Froe, 15, 5, 8 for PG Dan Cage, 8, 8, 9 for Frie.

#1 seed, #4 ranked Syracuse, 29-3, in the Sweet Sixteen. Tough, tough team.

3/24: 60-84. We were in over our heads. Still, great season! And we have no seniors, with some great looking recruits coming in!

4/3: #3 UCLA wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Cal Mims is SEC POY, and 1st team. For the first time ever, I am Conf. COY. I thought Froe should have made 2nd team.

4/16: All 3 assistants move on. Not looking forward to this.

Awful.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. We get $13,500. Great!

24-8, 13-5, Sweet Sixteen. Overall, I’m 191-95, .668.

6/30: “Superman” makes his debut in the comics.

7/28: “Wrong Way” Corrigan takes off from Brooklyn to fly to the U. S. West Coast, and lands in Dublin, Ireland. Some say it was just a publicity stunt, but he insists he really did fly the wrong way.

Nazi Germany is discriminating more and more against Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, people with disabilities, and others. Jews must now carry identification cards.

SF is wide open. Frosh Bill Tork starts, backed by soph Mike Tole and junior Du Froe.

Senior Mack Wall starts at PF, subs at C. Senior Ron Liva subs at PF.

Our best player, senior Cal Mims, starts at C.

We’re picked 4th in the SEC.

1/1/1939: 9-3, 1-1. Beat a ranked team at home, then lost to a good Tennessee team there. Mims had 31 and 25 in the loss.

1/15: 12-4, 4-2, #19, RPI #6. Tied for 4th, 1 back of 2nd, but it’s early.

FDR asks Congress for increased funding for the defense budget. He clearly sees war in the near future.

Cal Mims is #7 on the Norton list.

That PG we knew wouldn’t hit our SAT score didn’t.

2/12: 16-8, 8-6. We’re out of the top 25.

Cal Mims remains #7 on the Norton list.

2/26: We finish the regular season 20-8, 12-6, alone in 4th. #23, RPI #10. +6.7 PPG, +11.5 RBs, +0.2 TOs. Mims is at 23.0, 16.1. 32 in the nation in RBs. We have 6 others getting between 9.7 and 5.9.
