Historical Association #4

1/1/1947: 14-0, 2-0. Beat #8 by 21 at our place. #2, RPI #1. We beat Duke by 12 a month ago, and they are STILL ranked ahead of us.

We got 73 RBs (+46) in our last game. I never remember that happening before. Oh, it was on the road.

1/15: 18-0, 6-0, #2, RPI #1. Beat #5 away, then #7 away, and we’re still only #2?

1/29: 22-0, 10-0, #2, RPI #2. 2 game lead in the Big 10. +22.2 PPG, +23.8 RBs, +1.0 TOs. Rod Olds is #6 on the Norton list, Luis Hays #15, Eric Bent #23.

2/12: 26-0, 14-0, #2, RPI #2, 3 game lead over #4 Iowa.

Rod Olds is #9, Luis Hays #15 on the Norton list.

2/26: We end the regular season at 30-0, 18-0, #2, #2, 4 up on 2nd place in the Big 10. +23.0 PPG, +24.1 RBs, +1.3 TOs. #1 in PPG, RBs, Assists. #3 in Blocks. #6 in Steals Allowed. #14 in TOs.

I can’t imagine anyone other than our team or Duke will win the national title this season.

“Voice of America” propaganda broadcasts begin being beamed to Eastern Europe.

3/5: Rod Olds is #10 on the Norton list.

3/7: We play #9 seed Purdue, 16-12, 8-10, in the quarter finals. Beat them by 13 there.

3/8: 88-58. 22, 11 for Olds, all 5 starters had 10 or more, three of them also had 10 or more RBs. +30 RBs, 7 TOs.

#4 seed Illinois, 19-9, 11-7, in the semifinals. We won by 15 there.

3/9: 108-82. It was never close. 33, 11 for Olds, 18, 11, 8 for Puro, 18, 13 for Bent, 22, 6, 7, 3, 4 for Hays, 12 assists for Wynn. +18 RBs, 4 TOs.

#2 seed, #5 ranked Iowa, 26-5, 14-4, for the title. We won by 20 there, 15 here.

3/10: 67-66. Great game! We were down 10 twice, 8 at the half. Hays, hit a 15 footer for the win. He had 21, 16. 18, 7 for Puro, 9, 14 for Olds. +23 RBs, -7 TOs (13).

33-0, 18-0, #2, RPI #2.

3/12: #1 overall. We play #16, Northern Colorado. Not a bad bracket, surprisingly. Duke is #1 Midwest.

3/16: 79-44. 20, 11 for Olds, 17, 9, 3 for Puro, 10, 16 for Bent. +28 RBs, +9 TOs.

#9 seed Utah, 19-13, in round 2.

3/18: 68-42. We held them to 13 in the 1st half. 33, 19 for Hays. +20 RBs, +11 TOs.

#5 seed, #21 ranked UCLA, 22-12, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 73-60. 16, 17 for Olds, 16, 9 for Puro, 8, 14, 4 for Hays. +24 RBs.

It’s #2 seed, #5 ranked Iowa, 29-6, for the 4th time, in the Elite Eight. We’ve beaten them by 20, 15, then only 1.

3/25: 70-62. Down 14 with 7 minutes left and we finally woke up! 20, 9 for Puro, 14, 16 for Hays, 12, 10 for Olds, 9, 13 for Bent. The issue was TOs- 18, but none in
the last 7 minutes, and we caused 6. +20 RBs.

First ever trip for me to the Final Four!

The virtual title game is next. We play #1 ranked Duke, 36-1, in the national semifinal. We beat them by 12 but that was on 12/2, a LONG time ago. We did it with great D, holding them to 30.4% shooting. And Ike Puro had 38. We’ll need to take better care of the ball this time, and that game was the only one all season where we were out rebounded. So it won’t be easy!

4/1: 92-87! Down 17 with 18:49 to go and then we ran with it. Built a 10 point lead and it never got to be a one possession game again. 25, 9 for Puro, 20, 12 for Olds, 17, 11 for Hays, 12, 6 for Bent, 9, 5 for 6th man Addy Gain. -7 TOs, only +1 RB, but we held them to 32.3% shooting.

The only thing that can beat us is overconfidence as we play #20 ranked North Carolina, 26-10, for the title. We beat them by 19 there in November, and it wasn’t that close.

4/3: 92-75, the national title, and an undefeated season- 39-0. WOO!!! 21, 15, 5 for Puro, 20, 10, 3 for Hays, 11, 13 for Bent, 9, 14 for Olds. 61 RBS (+15), 9 TOs. It was never close. What a thrill!

4/4: Awards: Luis Hays was Final Four MOP. Rod Olds made 2nd team All American. I was named national COY. In conf., Rod Olds was POY, Frosh OY, and 1st team with
Ike Puro and Luis Hays. Eric Bent made 2nd team.

4/9: Oklahoma wants us. Not a chance.

4/23: We ask for a facilities upgrade. B- to B+!

Undefeated season, national title. What a year. Everyone is back and we are bringing in #1, 3, and 4! 436-161, .730.

5/1: National Gold, International Basic.

#1 preseason.

6/5: No one of interest in the transfer pool.

The Marshall Plan to assist Europe in recovering from WW II is proposed. It will eventually lead to 12 billion in U. S. aid.

6/26: 4 scholarships. We want 2 and 2.

Truman vetoes Taft-Hartley, but the neo-fascist Congress overrides his veto.

8/7: 8 on the Norton list: SF Luis Hays is #5, C Rod Olds #10, PG Cory Posy #11, C Joe Bock #12, PF John Daws #45.

8/21: We offer to a PG, an SG, 2 Cs.

9/18: Got 2, lost one. Got the SG, #1, a C, #4.

No in season tournament but a challenging schedule.

Arab League Secretary Azzam Pasha rejects a Jewish plan for partition, saying. "Nations never concede, they fight." About the Jews fighting for partition he says "We shall try to defeat you. I am not sure we'll succeed, but we'll try. We were able to drive out the Crusaders, but on the other hand we lost Spain and Persia. It may be that we shall lose Palestine. But it's too late to talk of peaceful solutions."

9/25: We lose 2.

10/2: Struggling to get those last 2 recruits. I NEED a PG! May not get one though- not a top flight one, anyway.

1st day of practice. I think the odds are very good for us to repeat as champs.

14,000 television sets are now in use in the U.S.

10/9: Got an SF, #17. Lost another PG.

10/27: Film stars who belong to the Committee for the First Amendment arrive in Washington D.C. They include John Huston, William Wyler, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Danny Kaye and Gene Kelly. They are unhappy with the committee's investigation of communism in the film industry. They are for letting artists work free of government interference. Danny Kaye claims that the motion picture industry has not been putting propaganda into its work. Gene Kelly follows, saying: "As Mr. Kaye has remarked, its pretty hard to find any propaganda in pictures." All of this is in reaction to the neo-fascist “red scare.”

11/6: 9 man rotation:

Frosh Cory Posy starts at PG, subs at SG, and soph Ike Puro is back at SG. Senior Kell Wynn and junior Lon Reed sub at PG.

Senior Luis Hays is back at SF, with frosh Dave more subbing there and at PF.

PF is wide open. Frosh Joe Bock starts, but More and soph Eric Bent get lots of minutes. Bent also subs at C.

Soph Rod Olds is back starting at C.

Great mix of veterans and new guys!

All three recruits sign.

12/4: 6-0, #1, RPI #4. More is now starting at SF, with Hays shifted to PF. Wynn is starting at PG.

12/25: 9-0, #1, RPI #1. +21.8 PPG, +23.3 RBs, +3.4 TOs (#1 in all 3). More leads us with 18.7, 7.2, followed closely by Puro with 17.3, 9.1. Olds gets 11.2, 9.6, Hays 9.6, 13.0.
