11/13: We play #14 seed Wake Forest in round one of the NIT. We’re the #3 seed.

11/14: 72-70. Lan Haye, who was pretty awful all night 6-25, 2-20 on threes, hit a 24 footer at the buzzer to save us. 19, 10 for SF Jam Bass. 11, 12 for PF Omar Geer. 15, 9, 5, 5 for C Cris More. 45 RBs, 5 TOs, but we shot only 33.8%. Not a great start to the season.

#11 seed Missouri in the 1/4 finals.

11/16: 73-69. Incredible game for Omar Geer, 30 and 21 with 4 blocks. He was more than the difference. 10, 12 for More, 8, 10, 11 for Haye. 57 RBs but 21 TOs.

#2 seed, #4 ranked Arizona in the semis. We need to play much better if we are to have a chance.

11/18: 63-68. 28.8% shooting, 1-20 on threes.

11/20: 2-1, #5. Both recruits sign.

11/25: Ike has a stroke.

12/4: 6-1, #3, RPI #2. Strong inside game led by More and Geer.

12/6: U. S. tries to launch first satellite. It blows up on the launch pad.

12/10: Albert Camus wins the Nobel for literature.

12/25: 10-1, #3, RPI #2. +10.0 PPG, +11.3 RBs, +3.6 TOs. 16.1, 11.5 for Geer, 16.5, 8.0 for More, 11.6, 9.5 for Bass, 11.1 for Bank.

1/1/1958: 12-1, 2-0, #3, RPI #2.

1/15: 15-2, 5-1, #3, RPI #3. We lost at Northwestern by 7. Alone in 1st in the Big 10.

1/29: 19-2, 9-1, #2, RPI #1. +14.9 PPG, +14.3 RBs, +5.1 TOs. 2 game lead in the Big 10.

Cris More is #17 and Omar Geer #18 on the Norton list.

1st nuclear fission.

2/12: 23-2, 13-1, #2, RPI #1. 3 game lead in the Big 10. More is #18 and Geer #20 on the Norton list.

1st black flight attendant.

2/26: We end the regular season at 27-2, 17-1, #1, RPI #1. +17.2 PPG, +14.8 RBs, +5.4 TOs. We win the conf. by 4 games.

Still, this doesn’t feel like a championship caliber team. Hope I’m wrong!

Another rocket blows up on the launch pad at Cape Canaveral.

3/7: We play #8 seed Minnesota, 17-12, 8-10.

3/8: 74-62. 17, 7 for SF Jam Bass, 15, 7, 3, 7, 2 for Cris More. Good guard play.

#12 seed Wisconsin, 20-12, 7-11, in the semis.

3/9: 72-69. They led by as many as 11 and were in it all the way. We won it inside, 36-4 in the paint, 13-0 on 2nd chances. 18, 11 for Geer, 18, 10 for Bass, 13, 13 for More.

#2 seed, #7 ranked Maryland, 24-8, 13-5, for the title. Beat them by 31 in the regular season.

3/10: 62-56. 16, 14 for Geer, 13, 6 for More. It was a defensive battle. +9 RBs. 18 TOs, but they had 19.

30-2, 17-1. #2, RPI #1.

3/12: #1 overall. We play 20-11 American first.

3/16: 91-65. 24, 11 for More, 22, 10 for Geer, 17, 8, 8 for Haye. 47 RBs, 5 TOs.

#8 seed Oklahoma ST in round 2.

3/18: 71-55. It wasn’t that close. 12, 16 for Geer, 15, 6, 3 for Bank, 9, 15 for Bass. 62 RBs.

#4 seed, #13 ranked North Carolina, 26-6, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 78-76 in OT. Whew! We escaped. 24, 18 for Geer, 23, 16 for More. 64 RBs, 7 TOs. We shot very poorly.

#3 seed, #8 ranked UConn, 27-6, in the Elite Eight. Beat them by 19 in the regular season.

3/25: 79-65. 24 for Haye, 17, 10 for Bass.

We play #1 ranked Duke, 36-1, in the national semifinal. This won’t be easy.

It’s #3 UCLA, 33-4 vs. #4 Arizona, 31-6, in the other game.

3/27: Khrushchev solidifies his power.

4/1: 68-83. Well, that was ugly!

4/3: UCLA wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Omar Geer and Cris More made Big 10 2nd team.

4/23: Budget. Yes, $26,000.

11/13: 81-64 over Western KY in the 1st round of the Coaches Classic. We’re the #2 seed. 19, 16 for PF Fred Reed, 18, 5, 4 for SG Lan Haye, 16, 6, 4 for PG Anto Bara, 10, 13 for Cris More. 50 and 9. This is going to be a very good team.

#10 seed, #7 ranked Temple is next.

11/15: 89-75. 29, 17 for Reed, who looks like he’s for real. 11, 11, 5 for More. 49 RBs, 9 TOs.

#3 seed, #9 ranked UConn in the semifinals.

11/17: 80-59. 17, 14 for Reed, 17, 9, 4 for Bara, 18, 6 for More. 44 and 11.

#12 seed, #9 ranked Utah for the title.

11/19: 89-70 and the title! Huge game for tourney MOP Fred Reed, 25 and 24. 23, 8 for More. Great play by the backcourt.

I have a feeling this is the year!

11/20: 4-0, #1! All 3 recruits sign.

12/4: 8-0, #1, RPI #1.

12/9: The fascist John Birch Society is founded.

1/15: 18-0, 6-0. Tied for 1st with Maryland, 3 up on 3rd place.

1/29: 22-0, 10-0. #1, RPI #1. Still tied with undefeated, #3 Maryland. Everyone else is out of the hunt. +20.2 PPG, +19.7 RBs, +6.4 TOs. Reed leads us with
17.5, 12.0.

Cris More is #10, and Lan Haye #18 on the Norton list.

2/1: Swiss voters reject women’s suffrage.

2/12: 26-0, 14-0, #1, RPI #1, 1 up on Maryland, 3 on Illinois, 5 or more on the rest.

Cris More is #14 and Lan Haye #17 on the Norton list.

2/22: The first Daytona 500 is won by Lee Petty.

2/26: We end the regular season 30-0, 18-0, #1, RPI #1. 1 up on Mayland, 6 or more on the rest. +22.0 PPG, +21.1 RBs, +5.4 TOs. No team is unbeatable but

it will take a strange set of circumstances for this team to lose.

#4 seed Indiana, 18-11, 11-7, in the semis.

3/9: 86-64. 20, 9 for Reed, 16, 12 for sub Omar Geer. 61 RBs, 11 TOs.

#2 seed, #3 ranked Maryland 30-1, 17-1, for the title. Beat them by 26 at our place.

3/10: 97-89. We led by as many as 28, and the final score was the result of a 7-0 run by Maryland at the end of the game. 21, 16 for tourney MOP Fred Reed, 21, 9 for Haye. 4 others with 12 or more.

33-0, #1, RPI #1.

3/12: #1 overall. We start with 17-16 South Alabama.

3/16: 83-49. 16, 16 for Reed. 50 RBs, 4 TOs.

#8 seed Mississippi ST, 22-8, in Round 2.

3/18: 90-65. 21, 13 for Geer, 20, 7 for Reed. 46 RBs, 4 TOs.

#5 seed, #17 ranked UConn, 24-9, in the Sweet Sixteen.

We play #2 ranked UCLA, 34-2, in the national semifinal. Beat them by 20 at our place. We need to control their outside game; we’re better inside.

On the other side it’s #3 Duke, 34-2, vs. #5 Arizona, 32-5.

4/1: 77-87. The refs killed us. They went 47-59 from the line and we went 21-37. 22 shot difference.

4/3: UCLA wins the title.

4/4: Awards: I get National COY, which is kind of hollow. Fred Reed is Big 10 Frosh OY and Cris More is Def. POY. Haye, Bara, and Reed make 1st team, More makes 2nd.

The Mercury Seven, The first U. S. astronauts, are selected: John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Griscom, Wally Scare, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton.

4/15: John Foster Dulles resigns as Secretary of State. He and his brother held tremendous power and exerted it for neo-fascist causes. His brother Allan will continue to hold great power for many years.

I retire from coaching with an overall record of 832-195, .810. 4 national titles at three different schools. I’ve had enough.
