11/20: 2-0 start against decent teams. Ranked #23!

All 4 recruits sign but still chasing 5 others.

12/4: 5-0. Our guards are doing some scoring, SG Wade Toke gets 22.4 PPG, and PG Brad Reed gets 16.2. Center Pete Rich is our best big man with 13.0 and 7.0.

I like our starting 5 but we have no depth, and no bench.

Greenpeace is founded.

12/23: We’re the #2 seed in the Hoops for Troops tournament. We play #7 Missouri, 2-6.

95-78. We led most of the way, and for the entire 2nd half. 28, 5, 4 for Toke, 21, 5, 10 for Reed, 14, 7 for SF Lar Talo.

#3 seed Georgia, 8-1, in the semis. We’ll need to bring our “A” game.

12/24: We did! 79-76. It was close, but not as close as the final score. They hit a three at the buzzer. 22, 6 for Toke, 18, 12 for Rich, 16, 10 for Talo, 12, 3, 6 for Reed.

#4 seed Alabama, 7-3, for the title.

12/25: 82-72 and the title! We blasted out of the gate and built a 20 point lead. 10 was as close as they got. 18 for Rich, 15 each for Toke and Reed, 11 for sub Cris Raaw.

10-1, RPI #13. +13.2 PPG, +4.8 RBs, +4.3 TOs. Toke leads us with 20.3. The stakes will get higher, as will the challenge, as we start Big 10 play.

1/1/1972: 12-1, 2-0. #21, RPI #3. We beat a team with a 9-2 record, then beat #24 there.

1/15: 15-2, 5-1. #17, RPI #10. In our first bad loss of the season we were crushed by #3 Michigan ST, there. Toke, Reed, and Rich continue to lead us in scoring, we’re rebounding well as a team, and we’re turning our opponents over very well.

1/29: 18-3, 8-2, #20, RPI #10. In a 2 way tie for 3rd. +9.8 PPG, +5.7 RBs, +2.6 TOs. We’re playing very well.

2/12: 21-4, 11-3, #17, RPI #11. Tied for 3rd in the Big 10. We continue to play well. We’re losing everyone who plays serious minutes except for PG Brad Reed, and we still have 5 scholarships to fill (and no money left!).

2/21: Nixon goes to Beijing, meets with Mao.

2/26: We end the regular season at 25-4, 15-3, #14, RPI #10, alone in 3rd place. +10.9 PPG, +6.7 RBs, +2.8 TOs.

3/7: We play #6 seed, #25 ranked Michigan, 21-9, 11-7, in the quarters. Tough matchups. We won by 14 at our place.

3/8: 71-63. 24, 13 for PF Pat Well. The guards did the rest of the scoring. 10 TOs.

#2 seed, #5 ranked Indiana, 26-3, 16-2 in the semis. They crushed us at their place. Tough team!

3/9: 72-79. We played hard but they were just better. 21 for Toke, 16, 13 for Talo.

26-5, 15-3, #15, RPI #11.

3/12: #4 East. We play #13 FL Atlantic, 20-11.

3/16: 61-53. Couldn’t get the O going. Great D saved us. 16, 8 for Well, 15 for Toke, 11, 12 for Talo, 11, 8 for Reed, 8, 12 with 6 steals for Rich. +12 RBs, +7 TOs.

#5 seed, #21 ranked Duke, 22-8 in round 2. I think we’re the better team, but it’s Duke.

3/18: 76-54. That’s about as good as we can play! 28, 8 for Toke, 12, 14 for Talo, 15 for Reed. 51 RBs, +22.

#1 seed, #1 in the country Georgia Tech, 31-4, in the Sweet Sixteen. This won’t be easy!

3/23: 74-100. We were only down 5 at the half but then they lowered the boom! 27 for Toke, 13, 3, 5 for Talo.

4/3: #3 Michigan ST wins it all.

4/4: Wade Toke and Pete Rich, both seniors, make Big 10 2nd team. I get Conf. COY.

4/23: We wind up with 5 unfilled scholarships. Next year could be tough. We desperately need a budget increase. We get a much needed $13, 700, and another PG signs.

5/1: 9 man roster, 6 of them guards, one is a walk on. He’ll be getting company!

5/15: Gov. George Wallace is shot and paralyzed for life.

5/22: Nixon goes to Moscow.

6/5: Going after bigs in the transfer pool- lots of them.

6/16: We got 3 bigs. 2 look outstanding. The other is a gamble.

I sort of “retired” from singing and song writing a few years ago, but my agent feels like my style is perfect for what’s happening in the folk rock scene right now. He’s asked me to put together some material for an album, hopefully with at least 5-6 new songs. Not sure if I’ll do it or not yet. My agent also says the money for concerts has gone WAY up. That’s not a huge factor but it makes things more interesting.

6/17: Four men are arrested for breaking into the DNC in the Watergate complex in D. C.

6/26: 5 scholarships to fill. We want at least 2 guards.

8/12: The last U. S. combat troops are withdrawn from Vietnam.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, a PF, 2 Cs.

9/18: We get a C, #32, lose a PF.

NIT vs. #5 ranked Oklahoma ST.

9/25: We get a PG, #34, a C, #56. We lose 2.

10/2: 1st day of practice. I think we’re better than we were last year.

10/9: We lose 2 recruits. Still need a guard and a big.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Juco junior Jon Bevy is at the Point. Senior Brad Reed moves to SG but subs at PG.

Frosh Ivan Donn is at SF. Senior Jay Marn subs at SF and PF.

Juco junior Gar Hart starts at PF, subs at C.

Frosh Ike Gant is at C.

11/7: Nixon wins re-election in a landslide.

I have 4 songs written. I REALLY like one, “War and Peace,” and I like the other three almost as much. Hadn’t realized how much I miss this!

11/13: Tomorrow we play #5 ranked Oklahoma ST in the 1st round of the NIT. They’re the #4 seed, We’re #13.

11/14: 74-81. Fouls hurt but ball handling hurt more (17 TOs to their 5). 19, 4, 3 for PG Jon Bevy, 17, 7, 5 for SF Ivan Donn, 14 for Brad Reed. We’re going to be a good team but we’re not ready for #5 in the nation yet.

11/20: All 3 recruits sign, but we’re chasing two more.

12/4: 4-1, RPI #18. We’re getting our points outside- PG Jon Bevy gets 18.0, SG Brad Reed 17.2, and SF Ivan Donn, 15.6. Gar Hart gets 11.2 RBs.

12/25: We go to Conf. play at 8-1, losing only our opener. +15.9 PPG, +7.5 RBs, +3.5 TOs. RPI #4. Why aren’t we ranked!

1/1/1973: 9-2, 1-1. We lost at #9 ranked Purdue.

The album is ready to record. 8 new songs (I just finished the last one) and 4 that I recorded before. My agent says they’re looking at a March 1 release, and they plan to give it a lot of publicity.

1/15: 12-3, 4-2. RPI #5.

1/22: Roe vs. Wade.

LBJ dies.

1/29: 15-4, 7-3, RPI #12, and we’re STILL not ranked! Tied for 4th in a very tough Big 10. +11.2 PPG, +6.5 RBs, +2.6 TOs. Looking at the schedule we should go 6-2 or 5-3 for the remaining games.

The album is recorded. I REALLY like the way it turned out. My agent says we have a huge hit on our hands. I hope he’s right!

1/30: 7 Watergate defendants are either convicted or plead guilty. Several members of the Nixon inner circle are implicated in either the break in planning or the cover up, or both.

2/12: 17-6, 9-5, RPI #9. Tied for 5th.

2/26: 20-7, 12-6, alone in 6th. Tough, tough conference this year. RPI #10. +8.2 PPG, +5.7 RBs, +1.5 TOs.

3/6: We play last place Minnesota, 10-19, 3-15, in the 1st round.

3/7: 71-47. 15, 15 for C Ike Gant, 17 for PG Jon Bevy. +22 RBs, +8 TOs.

#3 seed Michigan, 20-7, 14-4, in the quarter finals. We lost by 12 there. I think we can beat these guys if we play well.

3/8: 82-79. They led by as many as 13 but we never gave up. 12, 14 for Gant, and 5 others had 8 or more. -7 RBs but +11 TOs. At the end we outscored them 7-3
in the last minute. Gant had 5 of those points and 3 RBs.

#1 seed, #1 ranked Maryland, 29-2, in the semis. They crushed us there.

3/9: 60-85. We led early, by as many as 8, and by 1 at the half. Then the wheels fell off in the 2nd. The refs didn’t help, but Maryland was the better team.

22-8, 12-6, RPI #11. Hoping for a #3 seed but it will likely be a #4 or even a #5.

After a delay, the album and the single, both named “War and Peace,” are released.

3/12: #7 East. That’s an absolute insult. We play #10 seed Chattanooga, 24-7.

3/16: 72-60. 17, 6, 3 for Bevy, 13, 9 for Donn, 3 guys with 11 each.

#2 seed, #8 ranked Georgia Tech, 27-7, in the 2nd round. Tough matchup, but I think we have a shot.

3/18: 51-67. Not tonight. We were flat, and we shot 28.8%.

3/20: “War and Peace” is #1 on both the album and singles charts. I’ve never had a #1 before. It’s pretty cool!

4/3: #2 Syracuse wins it.

4/4: Awards: I get Conf. COY, and that’s it. I thought Bevy and Gant should have made the 2nd team.

4/9: No good job offers.

4/23: I ask for another budget increase. I’m not optimistic. Denied.

23-9, 12-6. Overall, I’m 332-124, .728.

4/30: Haldeman, Erlichman, Dean and Kleindienst resign.

“War and Peace,” both the single and the album, are still at #1 after 7 weeks. I’m amazed! Everybody wants me- all the big TV shows, they want me to do a movie, I’m being offered fortunes for tours. Not sure whether I should switch careers.

Working on another album. Three songs written.

1/1/1974: 1-1. We lost at #2 Michigan ST.

1/4: Nixon refuses to surrender the Watergate tapes to the Senate Investigating committee.

1/15: 10-2, 4-2. #11, RPI #13. Only #2 Michigan ST has beaten us so far, and they’ve done it twice.

My record company screwed up and didn’t get me new album out in time for the Xmas season. I am NOT happy. It came out today. It’s called, “Peace Now.”

The single is “Now.”

1/29: 19-2, 8-2, #10, RPI #10. In a 3 way tie for 2nd, 1 back of Mich. ST. +20.1 PPG, +12.5 RBs, +5.7 TOs. All 5 starters average 11.9 or more.
