Historical Association #6 1st season 1974-‘75

One of 4 associations. 1: All PGs and SGs, Strong Outside. 2: All PGs and SGs, Favor Outside. 3: All PFs and Cs, Strong Inside. 4: Favor Inside.

All will use the same strategies; we’ll start with the same team each time, and stay at the same school for the entire run; the school MAY change conference.

1st season will not count, next 10 seasons will. At the end we’ll compare to see who did best and worst.

Coach Skills Average, go to 80-Off, 85 everything else.

We start at Western Michigan, in the Mid-American Conf.

No “backstory,” but the historical reports will continue, taking us to 2018.

Correction: Starting at Temple, not Western Michigan. Coach’s starting ratings are 75 across the board.

5/1: Stripping the roster of big guys. Changing SFs to SGs, walk ons to SGs. But remember, Year 1 stats will not count.

5/7: Impeachment hearings begin in the House.

6/26: 6 scholarships. Going after only PGs and SGs.

7/27: The House Judiciary Committee votes 27-11 to recommend impeachment on three charges of criminal conspiracy.

8/9: Nixon resigns. Gerald Ford becomes President.

8/21: We offer to 4 PGs, 2 SGs.

9/8: Ford pardons Nixon.

9/18: We get 4, lose 2. We get a PG, #26, an SG, #29, a PG, #35, an SG, #43.

Alaskan Classic vs. Florida State. Challenging schedule.

9/25: Got one, lost one. Got a PG, #37.

10/2: Got the last one, a PG, #31.

1st day of practice. Playing with all guards will be interesting!

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Junior John Jons starts at PG with senior Scot Reed getting almost equal time.

Soph Jam Leed is at SG with soph Will Rowe subbing.

Senior SG Ray Clay starts at SF, subs at PF. Junior SG Tal Owen subs at SF.

Soph SG Ric Bows starts at PF, subs at C.

Frosh SG Cris Cham, is at C.

The 4 different types of teams is an interesting experiment. Good idea!

11/20: 2-0 start. #25 ranked. All guards and we’re outrebounding the other team and not handling the ball that well. It’s early.

One PG does not sign.

11/25: 80-66 over FL ST. 20, 8 for Center Cris Cham, 14, 4, 3 for SG Jam Leed. We led most of the way. We’re the #4 seed, they’re #5.

#1 seed Louisville, 2-1, in the semifinal round.

11/26: 79-91. 21, 5 for Leed, 17, 4 for SF Ray Clay. They were the better team.

12/4: 6-1. #9, RPI #8. -5.7 RBs, which is kind of expected. +6.4 TOs, but -0.7 assists.

We’re still tweaking the lineup a bit.

12/25: 9-1 going to conf. play. #14, RPI #5. +8.4 PPG, -3.8 RBs, +5.2 TOs, +0.2 assists. +3.0 steals.

The North Vietnamese are very close to taking control of all of Vietnam.

1/1/1975: 2-0 start to conf. play. #13, RPI #3.

Mitchell, Haldeman, Ehrlichman found guilty of Watergate crimes.

1/15: 14-3, 5-2, #15, RPI #8. Tied for 3rd in conf.

1/29: 17-3, 8-2, #17, RPI #11. Alone in 3rd. +8.5 PPG, -1.8 RBs, +4.4 TOs, +0.7 assists, +2.7 steals.

One recruit does not hit our SAT score.

2/12: 19-5, 10-4, #17, RPI #12. In a 2 way tie for 3rd, 2 back of 2nd, 4 up on 5th.

2/26: 22-6, 13-5, #17, RPI #16. Alone in 3rd place. +6.7 PPG, -1.6 RBs, +4.6 Tos, +0.1 assists, +2.5 steals, -0.3 blocks.

3/9: We play #6 seed East Carolina, 13-16, 8-10, in the first round.

3/10: 83-75 in OT. We almost blew this one. Fortunately, their SF missed the front of a 1 and 1 with .4 left in regulation, and we got the RB. 19, 8, 6 for PG John Jons, 17, 5, 3 for 6th man Tal Owen, 17 for SG Jam Leed. -10 RBs, +16 TOs.

#2 seed, #7 ranked Cincinnati, 25-4, 15-3, in the semifinals. They beat us by 21 and 12 in the regular season.

3/11: 57-75. They seem to have our number this season. 14, 12 for C Cris Cham.

23-7, 13-5, #18, RPI #15.

3/12: #5 South. We play #12 Western Carolina, 23-9.

3/17: 74-77. We were up 15 early in the 2nd half and then the shots simply would not drop.

Disappointing end to a good season.

4/3: #2 Duke wins the title.

4/4: Awards: Cris Cham is Conf. Frosh OY. Jam Leed and Cris Cham make 2nd team.

Taiwanese dictator Chiang Kai-Chek dies.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. We get $13, 600.

23-8. 13-5. A reminder that first year stats do not count in the data being compiled for the four types of associations. Years 2-11 count.

All of Vietnam is under the control of the Viet Cong.

11/13: We open the season at the NIT vs. Georgia. We’re the #7 seed, they’re #10.

11/14: 85-79. All 5 starters had 12 or more. -8 RBs but +10 TOs.

# 2 seed, #8 ranked North Carolina in the 2nd round. This won’t be easy!

11/16: 85-64. Turned out that it WAS easy! We led all the way. 17, 15, 4 for PF Tal Owen. 5 other had between 9 and 12, and 3 others scored. +13 RBs, 8 TOs. Great win!

#3 seed, #12 ranked Pitt in the semifinal. On paper, UNC was tougher, but these guys can play!

11/18: 66-73. They got out to an early lead and we never caught them. We got it to 2 twice. 15, 10 for C Brad Camp, 15, 4, 3 for PG Dar Maye, 11, 6, 3 for SF Roy Lona. 50 RBs, 11 TOs. They shot better and went to the line 31 times to our 12.

11/20: 2-1. #15.

All of our recruits signed.

Francisco Franco, long time dictator of Spain, dies.

11/27: Francisco Franco is still dead.

12/4: 4-3 but the toughest part of the pre-conf. schedule is behind us. #18, RPI #9.

12/25: 8-3, #13, RPI #2. +5.4 PPG, +2.2 RBs, +4.5 TOs. 4 guys get between 11.3 and 14.3 PPG.

1/1/1976: 1-1 to start conf. play. We shocked #6 UConn there, then lost to #16 Cincy here.

1/15: 13-4, 5-1, #12, RPI #7. Tied for 1st in conf. Ball handling is doing it for us, +7.5 TOs, +5.2 steals, +2.9 assists.

1/21: The supersonic Concorde begins flying passengers.

1/29: 16-5, 8-2. #12, RPI #14. 6.5 PPG, 1.4 RBs, 6.2 TOs. Still tied for 1st.

Roy Lona is #24 on the Norton list.

2/12: 19-5, 11-2, #12, RPI #9. Still alone in 1st. Ball handling and steals continue to get us through.

2/26: 23-6, 15-3. #11, RPI #7. We end up 1st in conf. +7.9 PPG, +1.3 RBs, +5.8 TOs, +4.0 steals, +3.3 assists.

3/9: We play #8 seed Memphis, 11-17, 7-11, in the 1st round.

3/10: 72-64. 15, 11 for C Brad Camp, 19, 5 for SG Tav Duns. 4 TOs.

#5 seed Tulane, 13-15, 9-9, in the semifinals. We beat them by 10 last week.

3/11: 84-66. 21, 12 for Camp, 20, 5, 3 for SF Roy Lona, 14, 11 for PF Tal Owen, 13, 7 for Duns. 8 TOs.

#2 seed, #6 ranked UConn, 26-5, 14-4, for the title. We beat them 77-74 both times, which is a little weird! Strangely enough, given that I play all guards, they are stronger outside and we’re stringer inside.

3/12: 78-83. 14 lead changes, 10 ties. The refs didn’t help- 25 fouls called on us, 11 on them. My starting back court fouled out, and that’s when UConn got ahead of us for good.

25-7, 15-3. #9, RPI #11. Hoping for a #2 or #3 seed.

#2 West. Terrific! We play 18-13 Colgate.

3/17: 98-74. We were on fire. 37 for PG Dar Maye. 9 TOs.

#7 seed Florida, 19-11, in the 2nd round.

3/19: 61-77. NOT a good night. Lona had 17 and 7 but no one else did much.

4/3: #1 Purdue beat UConn for the title.

4/4: Awards: Roy Lona gets Conf. Frosh OY and makes 1st team. Brad Camp and Tav Duns make 2nd team. All 3 are frosh!

4/23: We ask for a budget increase. We get $14,300.

26-8, 15-3, 2nd round of the NCAA tourney. Good season. Better one coming!
