Historical Association #7 1st season 1977-‘78

One of 4 associations. 1: All PGs and SGs, Strong Outside. 2: All PGs and SGs, Favor Outside. 3: All PFs and Cs, Strong Inside. 4: Favor Inside.

All will use the same strategies; we’ll start with the same team each time, and stay at the same school for the entire run; the school MAY change conference.

1st season will not count, next 10 seasons will. At the end we’ll compare to see who did best and worst.

Coach Skills 65 across the board, go to 80-Off, 85 everything else.

We start at Wisconsin-Green Bay, in the Horizon Conf.

No “backstory,” but the historical reports will continue, taking us to 2018.

5/1: Stripping the roster of big guys. Changing SFs to SGs, walk ons to SGs. But remember, Year 1 stats will not count.

We buy the National Basic.

6/26: 4 scholarships.

8/4: Department of Energy is created.

8/16: Elvis has left the planet.

8/18: Steven Biko is arrested.

8/21: We offer to 3 PGs and an SG.

9/12: Steven Biko is beaten to death in prison.

9/18: Golden State Classic vs. UCLA.

9/25: We get 1, lose one. We get an SG, #259.

10/2: We get one, lose one. We get a PG, #168.

10/9: We get a PG, #149.

10/26: Smallpox is considered to be eradicated worldwide.

11/20: 1-1 start. Rebounding very poorly (#319), but only -0.5.

All 3 recruits sign. Still chasing the 4th.

Sadat visits Israel.

11/27: 1-3. We make a couple of changes. Flik has been playing much better than Mead so he’ll start in Mead’s place.

12/4: 2-3. I expected a poor inside game but I am NOT happy with our ball handling, 14.0 TOs per game, and -4.0 assists.

One more game and then what will likely be a brief appearance at the Golden ST Classic. We are NOT ready for #16 UCLA, our first opponent! They’re the #1 seed.

12/9: 77-89. My guys played very well but UCLA had too much talent. SG Lee Quin had 26. 13, 9 for SF Ray Trot. 11, 8, 4 for C Sean Gold.

12/25: 4-5 heading for Horizon League play. RPI #257. -5.0 PPG, -0.7 RBs, -0.6 TOs.

1/1/1979: 10-1, 2-0. Great start, beating two of the top teams in conf., one on the road.

1/15: 5-1, RPI #27. We’re alone in 1st place but it’s early. Deni is averaging 19.3.

The Shah escapes from Iran.

1/29: 16-3, 8-2, RPI #24. Alone in 1st. +6.0 PPG, +0.4 RBs, +2.9 TOs, +1.6 assists, +0.8 steals. Deni is getting 19.8 PPG.

3/3: We play #9 seed UIC, 10-18, 5-13, in the quarters.

3/4: 91-86. We led all the way. They scored the last 5, and the win was never in danger, but they were tough. 22 each for starting guards Deni and Quin, 20 and 6 for PF Reg Raff. 11, 8, 6, 4, 2 for C Sean Gold. We didn’t rebound well.

#5 seed Oakland, 15-13, 9-9, in the semis. We beat them by 21 and by 20.

3/5: 70-68. Again, we led almost all the way, and a three at the buzzer by their SG made it a 2 point game. But again, they hung in all the way. 23 for Deni, and 7 others had between 4 and 9; a real team effort. Too many TOs, too many fouls, but we’ll play for the title.

#7 seed Wright ST, 14-16, 8-10, in the title game. We split the season games, and they are tougher than their record indicates.

3/6: 87-73. An easy one! 26, 5, 3, 3 for Deni, 27, 4 for PG Lee Quin, 12, 8 for Gold. The question is whether to move up to a more challenging conference next season.

26-4, 15-3. Ranked!!! #20. RPI #17.

3/12: #5 West. We play #12 UNLV, 20-11. Tough 1st round matchup.

3/17: 82-77. 17 lead changes, 9 ties. Down 7 at the half. 16, 10 for Gold. 13 each for Deni and Flik. We won it at the line. 8 TOs helped.

#4 seed, #16 ranked LSU, 24-8, in the 2nd round. They’re a good team, but we think we have a chance.

3/19: 63-84. We were overmatched. 27 for Deni.

3/28: Three Mile Island does what all nuclear plants will do sooner or later.

4/3: #2 UCLA wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Gilo Dani is Horizon Frosh OY and 1st team. Sean Gold makes 2nd team. I get Conf. COY.

4/23: We need money!!! We get $9,000. I’ll take it!
