Historical Association #8 1st season 1988-‘89

(NOTE: I tried several times to get an association with only PFs and Cs. HUGE numbers of TOS, and a complete inability to compete. So I’m going with SFs, as well as PFs and Cs.)

All SFs, PFs and Cs. Heavy Inside.

One of 4 associations. 1: All PGs and SGs, Strong Outside. 2: All PGs and SGs, Favor Outside. 3: All SFs, PFs and Cs, Strong Inside. 4: Favor Inside.

All will use the same strategies; we’ll start with the same team each time, and stay at the same school for the entire run; the school MAY change conference. 1st season will not count, next 10 seasons will. At the end we’ll compare to see who did best and worst.

Coach Skills 65 across the board, go to 80-Off, 85 everything else.

We start at Western Michigan, in the Mid-American Conf.

No “backstory,” but the historical reports will continue, taking us to 2018.

5/1: Stripping the roster of little guys. Changing SFs to PFs, walk ons to PFs. But remember, Year 1 stats will not count.

5/15: The USSR announces it is leaving Afghanistan. The war has bankrupted the USSR.

6/26: 5 scholarships.

8/21: We offer to an SF, 2 PFs, 2 Cs.

9/18: Going to the JAG Holiday vs. UMass.

9/21: The race baiting Willie Horton campaign begins. It will win Bush the election. An appeal to racism pretty much always has worked in the
U.S. It probably always will.

It is the beginning of the end for brutal Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

9/25: Got one, lost the other 4. Got a PF, #62.

10/2: 1st day of practice.

We’re picked to finish 8th out of 10 in conf.

10/9: We get one, lose 2. We get an SF, #712, but that will get lower.

11/6: TOs are a real problem. 8 man rotation:

PG is split pretty evenly three ways to start. Junior Art Yuno starts there, backs up at SG. Junior Mike Jack starts at SG, subs at PG. Frosh Del Cars subs at PG.

Junior Sal King is at SF, supported by frosh Sean Sanz.

Junior Scot Kree starts at PF, subs at C. Soph Dee Bett subs at PF.

Our only senior, Mike Sola, is at C.

Expect changes!

11/8: George H. W. Bush is elected POTUS. The good news is that brain dead sock puppet Rayguns will be gone in January.

Ah, balmy Green Bay. It's gorgeous in November!

11/20: 2-0 start. Lousy ball handling, but great rebounding and D.

Both recruits sign. We’re chasing three more. C Mike Sola and PF Scot Kree lead us.

11/27: 4-0. Averaging 16.3 TOs, but +12 RBs.

12/11: 5-1. 16.3 TOs per, but #1 in RBs allowed!

12/22: 6-2 headed or the JAG Holiday vs. 5-3 UMass, the #2 seed; we’re #7.

12/23: 80-92. 20 TOs, poor free throw shooting, poor outside D.

12/25: 6-3, RPI #92. +3.6 PPG, +11.9 RBs, -2.9 TOs, -0.9 blocks, -0.1 assists, -1.4 steals. Mike Sola has been our best player with 16.7, 11.2. Scot Kree is next with 17.1, 7.0.

1/1/1989: 7-4, 1-1.

1/7: Hirohito dies.

1/15: 9-6, 3-3, RPI #103. Tied for 5th but only 1 back of 1st.

1/20: G. H. W. Bush becomes POTUS. Sock puppet Rayguns’ legacy? The national debt has risen from around 32 percent of Gross Domestic Product to around 68 percent.

1/29: 12-7, 6-4, RPI #91. +3.6 PPG, +12.2 RBs, -3.7 TOs, +0.1 blocks, +0.1 assists, -1.6 assists. Tied for 3rd, 1 back, but lots of road games
ahead, 5 of the last 8. Sola leads us with 16.9, 10.8, 1.7 blocks, 2.1 steals.

2/12: 14-9, 8-6, RPI #90. Alone in 4th.

2/26: We end the regular season at 18-10, 11-7, RPI #68, despite being 4th from last in TOs. In a 3 way tie for 2nd in Conf., the #3 seed. 17.5, 10.3 for Sola, 15.7, 6.4 for Kree.

3/3: We play #6 seed UIC, 15-13, 9-9. They won by 16 there. We won by 1 in OT here. So we’re taking this seriously.

3/4: 85-71. 25, 7 for SG Art Yuno. 15, 2, 5 for PG Mike Jack. Only 9 TOs.

#2 seed Valparaiso, 18-11, 11-7, in the semifinals. We lost to them twice, but we think we’re the better team.

3/5: 78-70. 21, 12, 6, 3 for Sola, 20 for Yuno, 18, 11 for Kree. 22 TOs, but they had 19.

#1 seed Oakland, 18-12, 12-6, for the title. They crushed us there, then we won by 6 at our place. Again, we think we’re the better team.

3/6: 68-70. We fell behind by 13 early and spent the night trying to catch up. We did late, twice, but we missed a 24 footer at the buzzer and fell just short. 18, 11 for Sola, 16, 6 for Kree.

20-11, 11-7, RPI #58.

3/9: Exxon Valdez.

3/12: NIT, #5 Midwest. We play #4 seed Perverterian, 20-9.

3/13: 64-78. We didn’t play good D, and shot selection was poor.

4/3: #3 Kentucky wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Senior Mike Sola is Horizon Conf. POY, Def. POY, and 1st team along with Scot Kree. I am Conf. COY.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. No.

Reminder: First year stats do not count in the experiment.

10/9: We got 2 more, both SFs, #99 and #110.

All 4 recruits sign. We’re chasing one more.
