Let’s see what the Iowa ST Cyclones can do!

11/20: 1-1 start. Lost at Chi ST due to poor D. Won at home with great D. Pete Mell looks very good, and the frontcourt looks decent. Will Ely takes care of the ball at the Point, and he plays good D, but he’s not a scorer.

All 5 recruits sign. Still chasing one more.

12/4: 3-2. We need to develop an offense, #298 in PPG; fortunately we’re playing very good D to kind of compensate. I have a couple of guards I could give more minutes to, but I’m going to wait a little longer to see if we jell.

2 more games before we go to the Caribbean Classic.

12/15: 4-3 going to the Challenge. Scoring is the issue, #306. Pete Mell gets 17.3. Our two big guys get their share, 11.3, 9.4 for C Jeff Smol, and 10.9, 9.1 for PF Ata Raif, but little to no point production from the rest. We’re going to give Ree Stan some minutes at guard. Let’s see if he can help.

We’re the #2 seed in the Classic, but #7 Muncie is 7-1. Looks like it could be a tough game.

12/16: 64-44. Best defensive performance of a season filled with good D. 15, 10 for Raif, 11, 9 for Smol. They really focused on stopping Mell, but he had 13. SF Ed Hinn had perhaps his best game to date, 9 and 9, and very good D. Stan had 8, 3, 3 in the first game in which he got real minutes. 40 RBs, which is just about our average (40.6).

Undefeated, 3rd ranked Oregon ST, 8-0, in the semis. They have 2 players, their C and their SG. If our usually very good D can stop them, we’ll be fine.

12/17: 60-64. We stopped the C and the SG, but the bench did us in, 36, 13, 7 to 18, 6, 1. Frustrating.

12/25: 6-4, RPI #, going to Big 12 play. +5.3 PPG, +5.3 RBs, +2.5 TOs. Still only #290 in PPG, but #10 in PPG allowed, and #5 in RBs. Pete Mell gets 16.6. We’re going to try starting Ree Stan at the Point. He’s playing well. We’ll lose a little D, but gain some O and some ball handling.

The Mitchell Report states that steroid use is very widespread in baseball.

1/1/2008: 1-1 start. 1 point loss at home; 5-10 from the line. That kind of thing makes me crazy. Ree has gotten it done in his 2 starts.

1/15: 10-6, 4-2, RPI #67. Tied for 3rd, 1 back of 1st. We’re doing well in conf. play so far. Some tough games coming up though. Stan is making a difference, we’re at #228 in PPG, which is a big improvement, and Will Ely is playing better as a sub than he did as a starter.

1/22: Terrific week, we beat both Oklahoma (in double OT there) and Kansas! Mell had 31 and 30, and Stan took great care of the ball and dished beautifully. True, neither is having their best season, but both have winning records. We’re tied for 1st with Waco, who we beat at their place.

1/29: 13-7, 7-3, RPI #44. Tied for 1st place with Kansas. +4.8 PPG (#167), +3.8 RBs (#9), +2.8 TOs.

Pete Mell is #17 on the Norton list.

2/12: 16-8, 10-4, RPI #36. Tied for 1st with OK ST. OK is 1 back. 4 to play; we need to win 3 of them to have a chance to win the conf.

Pete Mell is #19 on the Norton list.

2/19: 17-9, 11-5, RPI #35, alone in first. 3 teams are 1 back.

2/26: 18-10, 12-6, RPI #37. We end up tied for 1st with #20 OK ST. We’re the #2 seed. +3.3 PPG, +4.3 RBs, +1.9 TOs. We beat Texas by 1 in the regular season finale, HUGE win!

3/9: We play #10 seed, last place, Texas Tech, 12-17, 5-13.

3/10: 66-55. Great D! 20 for Mell, 13, 10 for Smol. 10 for Stan, with no TOs. He just doesn’t turn it over. As a team we had 10 TOs.

#3 seed Texas, 20-8, 11-7, in the semis. We split in the regular season.

3/11: 72-73. We fell behind early, finally caught up late. Then it went back and forth. They had the last possession, and they scored. 34, 9 for Mell. 22 TOs (-13), a season high 6 by Stan.

19-11, 12-6, RPI #47.

3/12: #10 East. We play #7 Florida ST, 21-9.

3/16: 89-67 and a 20 win season. 22, 9, 7 for Mell, 17, 7, 6 for Hinn, 5, 8 for Raif. Great win!

#2 seed, #8 ranked UCLA, 23-8, in the 2nd round. They are a VERY good team, but we don’t match up that badly against them. We’ll need to play our very best to have any chance.

3/18: 59-73. They built an early 20 point lead and we never really got back in it. 20 for Mell in his last college game.

I’m more than happy with the season.

4/3: #1 Duke wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Pete Mell is Big 12 POY and 1st team along with Jeff Smol. SF Ed Hinn made the 2nd team.

4/9: It would take an offer from a top 10, maybe a top 5 school to get me to leave Iowa ST… I’m staying.

4/23: I ask for $. No.

We have a top 40, a top 50, 2 top 60s, and 2 top 100 recruits coming in. Exciting!

20-12, 12-6. Overall, 53-39, .576.

5/1: National basic.

6/5: No transfers worth the price.

6/26: 4 scholarships.

8/21: We offer to a PG, an SG, a PF, and a C.

9/18: We get the SG, #70.

Coaches Classic vs. #19 Florida.

9/25: Got the other three, A C, #41, a PG, #46, a PF, #51.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We’re picked to finish 3rd.

11/4: Barack Obama is elected POTUS.

11/6: 9 man rotation to start:

Juco junior Ray Thur is at PG. Frosh Rod Jobb starts at SG, subs at PG.

Senior Will Ely and juco junior Ed Sted sub at SG.

Senior Ed Hinn is back at SF, backed by senior Jaba Watt.

Frosh Jam Jank starts at PF, subs at C.

Juco junior Ab Sale is at C. He was easily our best player in the exhibition games.

11/13: 53-46 over #6 seed, #19 ranked Florida, in the opening round of the Coaches Classic. That great D from last year is still with us.
It’s my #1 concern as a coach. Balanced scoring, what there was of it. 6 players had between 6 and 11 points.

It’s #3 seed, #11 ranked, conf. rival OK ST in the quarter finals. They’re a really good team and we’ll need to play our best.

11/15: 84-65. We didn’t do much wrong tonight. 18, 17 for Center Ab Sale, 20 for SG Rod Jobb, 14, 6, 4 for PG Ray Thur. +12 RBs. It was a 2 point game at the half but we were just terrific in the 2nd.

#2 seed, #5 ranked UConn in the semis. Another tough team that we’ll need to be ready for.

11/17: 72-70 in a real battle. The winner was Ed Hinn’s three with less than a second to play. He had 5 threes, 15, 6, 4. 13, 5 for Jobb, 14 for Thur, 8 and 13 for PF Jam Jank, 8 and 9 for Sale. 21 TOs, but +13 RBs.

#8 seed, #20 ranked Miami (FL) for the title. They are terrific outside so we’ll try to play the game inside.

11/19: 78-73 and the title and we’re ranked #4 in the nation! We led all the way, by as many as 24. 22 for Thur, 16, 21 for Sale who owned the glass, 13, 2, 10 for Hinn. 44 RBs and only 5 TOs. We beat 4 ranked teams in a row!

All 4 recruits signed.

12/4: 7-1, #5, RPI #1. We lost by 4 to a poor team on the road, then won at home.

12/25: 11-1, #7, RPI #5. +9.7 PPG (We’re getting a lot more O this season, #23), +9.5 RBs (#1in RBS per game) -0.5 TOs. Sale leads us with .3, 12.4.

1/1/2009: 13-1, 2-0. #7, RPI #1. We beat 2 ranked teams this week, 1 home, 1 away. Sale had an amazing 36, 20 in the road game.

1/15: 16-2, 5-1, #5, RPI #1. Tied for 1st with Texas. Sale is getting 17.3, 11.4. PF Jam Jank is getting 9.3 and 9.3. PG Ray Thur gets
12.4. The rest are all contributing. We are really playing well, and exceeding my expectations!

1/29: Tough week, we lost 2 road games. We shot poorly in both games. Still alone in 1st place though.

18-4, 7-3, #5, RPI #1. +8.4 PPG, +8.1 RBs, +0.9 TOs.

2/5: 20-4, 9-3, #5, RPI #1. Alone in 1st, 2 teams are 1 back.

2/12: 22-4, 11-3, #5, RPI #1. Alone in 1st. 1 up on OK ST, 2 on OK, 3 or more on the rest, with 4 to play.

2/19: 24-4, 13-3, #5, RPI #1. 2 game lead with 2 to play.

2/26: 26-4, 15-3, #5, RPI #1. Alone in 1st by 3 games. +8.9 PPG, +8.6 RBs, +1.2 TOs.

3/9: We play #9 seed Texas Tech, 13-15, 6-12, first.

3/10: 86-80. Our D disappeared but we had enough talent to win anyway. 17, 7, 3, 3 for SF Ed Hinn, 15, 10 for PF Jam Jank, 13, 3, 8 for PG Ray Thur. 18 TOs didn’t help.

#4 seed Texas, 17-11, 11-7, in the semis. Beat them by 14 and 13.

3/11: 83-72. 28, 17 for Sale, 15, 4, 7 for Hinn, 14, 7 for sub Ata Raif. 46 RBs, 7 TOs.

#3 seed Oklahoma, 20-10, 11-7 for the title. Beat them twice, but by only 3 both times.

3/12: 87-68. We led all the way. 19, 7, 7 for Hinn, 21, 8 for Sale, 19 for Jobb. 10 TOs.

29-4, 15-3, #5, RPI #1. We expect a #1 seed.

#1 Midwest. We play #16 Georgia Southern.

3/16: 72-59. We slept through the 1st half. Fortunately we woke up in the 2nd, probably due to my tirade at halftime. 18, 9 for Jank. 11 TOs.

#9 seed, Conference rival Texas, 18-12, in the 2nd round. It worries me that we’ve beaten them three times. That’s hard enough. 4 is even harder.

3/18: 90-77. 6 player had 10 or more, led by Ed Hinn with 18, 6, 7. It was never close.

#4 seed, #10 ranked Milwaukee, 24-9, in the Sweet Sixteen. They have an outstanding SG. He’s rated the #2 player in the country.

3/23: 85-89 in OT. We got out to a big early lead and then faded and faded and faded. 20, 12 for Sale, but a disappointing end to a great season.

#7 Louisville is the champ.

4/4: Awards: Ab Sale is Big 12 POY and 1st team. Jam Jack is Frosh OY. Ed Hinn makes 2nd team and I get COY.

4/15: A group of mental defectives known as the “Tea Party” crawls out from under slimy rocks.

4/23: Still looking for that budget increase. No again. I thought we’d earned it this year.

31-5, 15-3. Overall, 84-44, .656.

6/5: No slots for transfers.

Swine flu.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We need guards.

8/7: Mick Mork is #31 and Ab Sale #42 on the Norton list.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs and an SG.

9/18: Got ‘em all, an SG, #58, a PG, #59, a PG, #68.

Preseason NIT vs. #4 Syracuse.

10/2: We’re picked 2nd to OK ST.

11/6: Senior Ray Thur is back at PG. Frosh Ben Gore is at SG. Junior Dave Huld subs at both guard spots.

Senior Ab Sale starts at SF, subs at PF. Soph Jam Jank subs at SF.

11/13: Syracuse is the #1 seed (#4 ranked) in the NIT. We’re #16. Let’s see…

11/14: The D was intense for both teams (We shot 27.9%, they shot 22.8%), but ours was incredible. 18 for PG Ray Huld, 11, 13 for PF Bry Sams, 9, 15 for C Mick Mork. +12 RBs.

#9 seed Pitt in the quarter finals.

11/16: 98-76, in a totally different kind of game from the last one. 21 for Thur, 15, 11 for Mork, 15, 6 for Sams, 17 for #3 guard Dave Huld, 8, 12 for 6th man Jam Jank. +16 RBs, 9 TOs. Looking good.

#4 seed, #6 ranked Purdue in the semis.

11/18: 61-53. Back and forth until the middle of the 2nd half, when we took charge. 19 for Thur, 13, 6 for SG Ben Gore.

And it’s #6 seed, #3 ranked Utah for the title.

11/20: 78-70 and the title! 20, 11 for Mork, 15 for Thur, 3 others with 10 or more. #9 ranked before the title game, so if we keep winning we should go higher.

All 3 recruits sign.

11/27: 6-0. #2 ranked, behind only Duke.

12/1: 30,000 more troops into the disaster called Afghanistan.

12/11: 9-1. #3, RPI #1. We were awful at 6-2 Norfolk ST.

12/25: 11-1, #2, RPI #1. +16.6 PPG, +13.8 RBs, +1.9 TOs. Mork leads us with 15.9, 10.4. I thought he’d be more of a scorer. PG Ray Thur gets 13.2. PF Bry Sams gets 10.3, 7.4.

3/9: We play #7 seed TCU, 15-14, 8-10.

3/10: 91-73. Never close. Ray Thur had 38.

#3 seed, #15 ranked Texas, 24-6, 13-5, in the semis. We split in the regular season.

3/11: 101-83. We shot 58.7%. 23, 9 for Mork, 21, 10 for Sams, 22, 4, 6 for Gore, 16 for sub guard Dave Huld, 13 assists for Thur.

#4 seed Oklahoma, 20-9, 10-8, upset #1 seed OK ST. We split in the regular season.

3/12: 62-69. Frustrating. This is a game we should have won. We didn’t shoot well, and we gave up 12 threes. 25, 7 for Mork.

27-6, 14-4, #3, RPI #2.

#1 Midwest. We play #16 North Florida, 17-13.

3/16: 75-51. 21, 20 for Mork. 47 RBs, 10 TOs.

#9 seed Minnesota, 21-12, in Round 2.

3/18: 67-60. 16, 6 for Mork, 15, 7 for Sams. 42 RBs, 10 TOs. We were listless.

#12 seed UMass, 23-11, in the Sweet Sixteen. This is a team we should beat.

3/23: 73-61. Close for almost 30 minutes. Then we finally woke up. 19 for Thur.

We’re just not playing as well as we should. That needs to change right now.

#2 seed, #8 ranked Purdue, 26-7, in the Elite Eight. We beat them by 8 in the preseason NIT.

3/25: 92-99. This game was a shootout. Neither team played much D. We were in it until about the last 2-3 minutes when they went on a mini-run, 9-3. 21-9 for Mork, 16, 8 for Sams, 15 each for Thur and Gore.

4/3: #1 Duke won the title.

4/4: Awards: Mick Mork is a 2nd team All American. In conf., Mork is POY, Frosh OY, and 1st team, along with senior guard Ray Thur. Frosh Bry Sams made 2nd team. I was named COY.

4/9: Virginia wants me. $40,000 more in the budget, great assistants, #6 recruit in the country coming in. Waiting to see if I get other offers, but also flying to Charlottesville for an interview…

I take the job at VA. It’s a rebuilding job but I feel I took Iowa ST as far as I could.

4/23: I ask for $. No.

30-7, 15-3. Overall, 114-51, .691.

ACA passes.
