Historical Association #11, starts 2011, 2012

Joe Mama here. Just accepted the head coaching job at San Francisco. No, I don’t expect to return them to the glory days of Bill Russell and K. C. Jones. I’m ambitious, and I don’t plan to stay here long. I’m looking to work my way up to an elite program, eventually.

I’m a strict disciplinarian, big on academics, and I do NOT cheat.

5/1: I hire a staff and probably spend too much money on it.

No money to buy reports.

Bin Laden is killed.

6/26: 7 scholarships.

7/21: NASA’s shuttle program ends.

8/21: I offer to 3 PGs, an SF, a PF, 2 Cs.

9/18: Get none, lose one. We get a PG, 3211.

No in season tournament.

Occupy Wall ST.

9/25: We lose one.

10/2: Got one, lost one. Got an SF, #74.

1st day of practice. We’re picked to win the PCC.

10/9: We lose 2 more.

10/16: We lose 2 more.

10/23: We lose another one.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Junior Jay Camm is at PG. Junior Cris Geer starts at SG, subs at PG.

Senior Dave Wild subs at SG.

Junior Adam Marr starts at SF, subs at PF.

Seniors Mo Adam and Nick Mell sub at SF.

Frosh Matt Cage starts at PF, subs at C. Senior Marq Gatt is at C.

11/20: 1-1 to start.

My 2 recruits sign but we’re still trying to land 5 more.

12/4: 5-1, RPI #204. We’re playing weak teams.

12/15: Pres. Obama says the war in Iraq is over.

12/25: 8-1, RPI #. +13.7 PPG, +7.0 RBs, +5.5 TOs. Inside players Marq Gatt, 15.7, 6.4, and Matt Cage, 15.0, 7.7, lead us.

1/1/2012: 9-2, 1-1, but a bad home loss. I guess a good road win made up for it, sort of.

1/15: 13-2, 5-1, RPI #71. In a 2 way tie for 1st. This is a pretty good team.

1/29: 16-3, 8-2, RPI #58. Still tied with Provo for 1st. +10.7 PPG, +5.0 RBs, +5.1 TOs. Gatt leads us with 15.3, 7.6, 14.4, 7.5 for Cage, 12.4 for SG Jay Camm, 11.7, 6.2 for SF Adam Marr.

2/12: 19-4, 11-3, RPI #53. Lost to Provo in double OT so now we’re tied with them for 1st with 4 to play.

2/26: 21-7, 13-5, RPI #66. We finish in a 3 way tie for 1st. We’re the #2 seed. Kind of a late season fade, losing 4 of our last 7, but one of those was the Bracket Breaker, which we didn’t want to play. +9.6 PPG, +4.3 RBs, +4.7 TOs.

3/6: We play #7 seed Moraga, 10-18, 7-11, first.
3/7: 93-99. We played terrible D, especially in the 2nbd half. NOT happy! Hopefully we’ll be invited somewhere, but we’re in a weak
conference so there are no guarantees after a first round loss. Matt Cage, probably our 2nd best player, was held to 4 and 8. Gatt had 16 and 13, and SF Adam Marr had 22.

21-8, 13-5, RPI #80.

3/12: NIT, #4 West. We play UMass, 20-11.

3/14: 87-70. We played really well. 26, 14 for Gatt, 14 each for Cage, Marr, and SG Dave Wild. +9 TOs.

#1 seed Miami (OH), 22-10, in the 2nd round. They’re starting SF is hurt and will not play, but they’re good.

3/16: 78-98. It was a 2 point game at the half. Then we gave up 58 in the 2nd. Awful.

3/26: We get a PF, #116. Hoping to land at least 2 more.

4/3: #5 Florida wins it all.

4/4: Awards: Senior Marq Gatt is PCC POY and 1st team. Matt Cage is Frosh OY and 1st team. Junior Adam Marr makes 2nd team.

4/9: SF is a nice town, and I’m building a good team, but the right offer would get me out of here like a shot.

Going to Miami (FL). Huge step up. It will be a rebuilding job, but hey, it’s the ACC!

Decent coaching staff. I’m keeping them.

4/23: I ask for $. We need it in order to compete. No.

5/1: National basic.

6/5: Looking at transfers. Only 1 we like.

6/12: Didn’t get him.

6/26: At least 5 scholarships. I may cut some deadwood.

8/21: We offer to 3 PGs, 2 PFs, a C.

9/11: Benghazi.

9/18: Got 2, lost 1. Got a PG, #33, and a PF, #42. Lost a PG.

Tip Off in Paradise vs. Alcorn ST.

9/25: Got 2, lost one. Got 2 PGs, #36 and 37.

10/2: We get a PF, #41. We’re considering banking the other scholarship if we don’t get a really good prospect.

1st day of practice. We’re picked 11th in the 15 team ACC. We’re aiming to finish in the top 1/2.

10/9: We got our last recruit, an SF, #54. Great recruiting class!

11/6: Lots of questions. We start with a 10 man rotation. I’m challenging players to use the time I plan to give them in games to show
me they should get more time:

Senior Dex Gard starts at PG, subs at SG. Junior Rob Hide is at SG.

Frosh Mike Davis and Dean Walt sub at PG.

Senior Eric Winn starts at SF, subs at PF. Sophs Rod Scot and Dean Rage, and frosh Ron Dory sub at SF.

Senior Brad Jonn starts at PF, subs at C. Senior Dan Hamm is at C.

Let’s see what happens!

Obama is re-elected.

11/13: A home game, then off to the Tip Off.

11/17: We win our opener by 5. PF Brad Jonn had 21,11, C Dan Hamm had 17 and 9, SG Rob Hide had 14.

We’re the #1 seed at the Tip Off. We play #8 seed Alcorn ST, 0-1.

11/18: 80-77. 25, 5 for Hamm, 17, 6 for Jonn, 16 for sub SF Ron Dory. We gave up 15 threes, and that’s what kept it close.

#5 seed VA Commonwealth, 1-1, in the semis.

11/19: 81-72. 20, 10 for Hamm, 15, 12 for Jonn, 13, 6 for Hide, 12, 6 for SF Eric Winn. We played pretty well, all in all, for the first time.

#2 seed, #18 ranked Hawaii, 3-0 (We’re #14 before the game). They’re very good outside.

11/20: 60-62. It was back and forth all night. 18, 13 for Hamm, 13, 10 for Jonn, 13 for Hide. 18 TOs (-10) did us in.

One of our recruits, a PF, didn’t sign. That means he won’t hit the SAT score. GPA of 2.9. Didn’t expect that.

12/4: 7-1, #15, RPI #38. Hamm is getting 20.9, 9.5. Jonn gets 17.3, 8.4. 12.6 for Hide. Our only loss so far was by 2 points, but a bunch of road games coming up.

12/25: 8-3, RPI #52; we drop out of the top 25. I am enraged over a loss at Yale when we had 26 TOs and gave up 14 threes. Inexcusable. Practices are not going to be pleasant.

+5.4 PPG, +9.0 RBs, -1.8 TOs.

1/1/2013: 10-4, 2-1. We split 2 road games, which is not easy in this conf. Then we won at home.

1/15: 11-6, 3-3, RPI #31. It’s a tough conf. We’re in a 4 way tie for 5th. TOs are killing us. No fix until next year when we bring in three top 40 guards.

1/29: 13-9, 5-6, RPI #42. Tied for 9th and a tough schedule ahead. That goal of finishing in the top half? Good luck! -1.2 PPG, +5.5 RBs, -1.9 TOs.

As expected, one of our committed recruits did not hit our SAT score. We offer to a PF.

2/12: 15-10, 7-7, RPI #39. In a 3 way tie for 7th with 4 to play, 3 on the road, 2 against ranked teams.

2/26: 16-13, 8-10, RPI #44. We finish in a 3 way tie for 9th, the #10 seed. Disappointing, but we don’t have the players. We will next year. -2.1 PPG, +6.1 RBs, -3.0 TOs.

3/7: We play last place Virginia, 7-20, 2-16, first.

3/8: 80-76. 20, 11 for Hamm, 19 for Hide.

#7 seed BC, 18-11, 9-9, in the round of 16. They absolutely killed us there. We need to contain their back court.

3/9: 57-83. We were pretty awful.

17-14, 8-10. RPI #41.

3/12: NIT, #2 East. We play #7 Rochester Hills, 21-9.

3/13: 82-56. 23, 8 for Hamm, 20, 12 for Jonn.

#3 seed West Virginia, 16-13, in round 2. This won’t be easy.

3/15: It wasn’t, 80-79 on a last second three by SG Rob Hide, who had 20 and 8. Hamm had 22, 15. 51 RBs.

We catch a break in that #5 Emmitsburg, 24-6, is our opponent in the round of 8. They’re tough, but you’d always rather play a #5 than a #1.

3/20: We’re living on luck! 87-85 on an 8 footer by Hamm at the buzzer. He had 29, 8, 4. 40 RBs.

We’re in the NIT Final Four. We play 21-15 Utah. They have a good PG and a VERY good SG, but not much inside.

3/28: 55-65. We stopped their SG but their PG had 40. We couldn’t get any O going, shooting 28.6%.

4/3: #6 UConn wins the title.

4/4: Awards: Dan Hamm and Brad Jonn, both seniors, make the ACC 2nd team.

4/9: Will I move again? If an elite program comes calling, yes. Otherwise, probably not. No tempting offers. Let’s see what we can do
with these Hurricanes!

4/15: Boston marathon bombing.

4/23: I ask for a budget increase. We get $3,400. Not much, but better than nothing, I suppose.

20-15, 8-10. Overall, 42-24, .636.

5/1: National basic.

We are really weak inside. We need to go for big guys.

6/5: One big guy we like.

6/12: Got him.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We’re going for bigs.

8/21: We offer to a PF and 2 Cs.

9/18: Got m1, lost 1. Got a C, #36.

Golden ST Classic vs. UMass.

9/25: Got one, lost one. Got a C, #45.

10/2: We lose one.

1st day of practice. We’re picked to finish 7th in the ACC.

11/6: 7 man rotation:

Juco junior Rufe Bott starts at PG, subs at SG. Frosh Sid Rand starts at SG, subs at PG.

Soph Ron Dory starts at SF. Juco junior Samy Clay subs at SG and SF.

Junior Vic Gate starts at PF, subs at C. Frosh Jef Loez subs at PF.

Senior Akin Ture is at C.
