I’ve noticed player potential’s changing each year. I was wondering if anyone could provide for insight on what to look for in a player that might achieve a higher potential, or what exactly goes into this/what it means as I’ve noticed some players never hit that potential. Thanks

Work ethic helps a lot. And a player won't get better sitting the bench.

coaching is also a big part of a player reaching out his full potential. Namely player development rating of the coach responsible for running practices, and as Wayne said, play time. To maximize the devlopment years redhirting a player to give him an extra year of development time helps - i think

Red shirting helps, sometimes a lot eventually, but if you're at a top team, and the player is top 20 or so, he may go pro if you red shirt him.

yeah thats a good point. i think if you also redshirt a player that highly values playing time he might transfer if you redshirt him, so you have to be careful redshirting players

Potential will change not only because of player development (or atrophy), but also because the coaches re-evaluate players, correcting their initial impressions.
