11/17: 1-0, and we’re off to the tip Off. We’re the #1 seed. We play #8 Toledo.

11/18: 92-64. 22, 18 for C Ban Hart, 14, 12 for PF Bob Sorn, 17, 6 for 6th man Kal Kinn. +20 RBs, +9 TOs.

#5 seed Florida ST, 1-1, in the semis.

11/19: 80-53. 24, 9 for Hart, 19, 19 for Sorn, 19, 9 for PG Loyd Fox. +32 RBs, 9 TOs.

#2 seed, #11 ranked Oklahoma, 3-0, for the title.

Both recruits sign.

11/20: 90-71. 19, 12 for Hart, 21, 8, 6 for Fox, 16 for SF Jam Guns. +31 RBs.

11/27: Beat #11 there, and #4 here this week.

12/11: 9-0. #1, RPI #1.

12/25: 10-1 going to Big 10 play. We lost at #9 Alabama. #1, RPI #1. +13.2 PPG, +16 RBs, +2.4 TOs.

Red Lucas, Indy Times: I’ve been writing some and worrying more about Hoosier head coach Joe Indy. I guess my worries were appropriate. University of Indiana Athletic Director Ambrose “Foot” McGursky, announced today that Indy has taken an indefinite leave of absence, due to health issues. No details were given, but I’m guessing we’re discussing mental health here. Indy has grown more irritable, more edgy, over the past year or so. He has been lashing out at referees, yelling at his players in ways he never did before, and has just generally been out of control. He got technicals in each of his last three games, and was tossed out near the end of the loss to Alabama. I’m happy that he’s addressing the problem, whether voluntarily, or at the university’s request or demand. He’s a great coach, and Indiana would be well served if he could continue there- that is, if the old, healthy Joe Indy could continue there.

1/1/2039: 12-1, 2-0. 1st assistant Ed Watkins led the team to a 2 win week. No word as to when Coach Indy will return. Loyd Fox had a triple double, 22, 12, 10 vs. Minnesota, and then 27 at Rutgers.

1/15: 16-1, 6-0, and Coach Indy will be at practice tomorrow. Coach Watkins went 6-0 in his absence.

1/29: 19-2, 9-1. We lost at Iowa by 12; 22 TOs and weak D. I almost snapped but managed to keep it together. Ties with #20 Michigan ST for 1st in conf. +16.2 PPG, +16,7 RBs, +2.6 TOs.

Loyd Fox is #6 on the Norton list. PF Ben Hart is #8, and C Bob Sorn #19.

2/12: 22-3, 12-2, #1, RPI #1. Still tied with Mich. ST for the Big 10 lead.

Loyd Fox is #5, Ben Hart #6 on the Norton list.

2/16: In the battle for 1st place in the Big 10, we beat Michigan ST by 29 at our place. 25, 13 for Ben Hart, and he had lots of help. +22 RBs.

2/26: We end the regular season 26-3, #1, RPI #1. Alone in 1st in the Big 10, 1 up on Iowa, 2 on Mich. ST. +18.9 PPG, +17.4 RBs, +2.8 TOs. Fox and Hart lead us.

3/5: We lose 4 to the pro draft.

Loyd Fox is #5 on the Norton list and Ban Hart is #7. They’re both going pro along with 6th man Kal Kinn and sub guard Ron Sowe.

3/7: We play #8 seed Wisconsin, 16-12, 9-9, in the 1/4 finals.

3/8: 95-65. Never a game. 21, 15 for 6th man Kal Kinn, 20 for PG Loyd Fox, 14, 10 for C Ban Hart. +17 RBs, only 4 TOs.

#4 seed Maryland, 20-8, 12-6, in the semis. Beat them by 20 and 16.

3/9: 86-71, and again, we led all the way. 30, 8, 7 for Fox.

#2 seed, #19 ranked Iowa, 24-6, 15-3, for the title. They won by 12 there. On paper we’re the better team, but we need to play well.

3/10: 84-77. It was close for 35 minutes. Then we went on a 10-2 run. 20, 9, 9 for tourney MOP Loyd Fox.

29-3, 16-2. We should be the #1 overall seed.

3/12: #1 overall. We play 16-16 Chattanooga first.

3/16: 101-68. 29, 4, 11 for Fox, 20, 11 for Kinn, 20, 12 for Sorn.+20 RBs, 6 TOs.

#8 seed Michigan ST, 23-7, in the 2nd round. We beat them by 21 and 29.

3/18: 100-69. 29 for Fox, for the 2nd game in a row. 15, 9 for Kinn, 14 each for Hart and SF Jam Guns. +26 RBs.

#4 seed, #14 ranked Oklahoma, 27-7, in the Sweet Sixteen.

3/23: 85-63. 30, 11 for Hart, 15, 8 for Ring. +15 RBs.

#11 seed Arkansas, 21-12, in the Elite Eight.

3/25: 96-82. 21, 8 for Kinn, 17, 7, 7 for Fox, 15, 5, 4 for Guns. +27 RBs.

We play #1 seed, #4 ranked Oklahoma ST, 26-5, in the national semifinal. We need to contain their guards, but we feel we’re the better team.

On the other side it’s #5 ranked Duke, 30-6, vs. #6 Memphis, 29-4.

4/1: 85-68. 23, 5, 4 for Fox, 12, 13 for Hart, 15, 4, 4 for Guns, 13, 6 for Kinn. 43 RBs, 10 TOs.

We play #5 Duke, 31-6, for the title. We beat them by 17 at our place but we expect a much tougher game this time. They’re not strong at PG, but they’re strong everywhere else. They’re not deep.

4/3: 92-83 and my 5th title. 24, 9, 4 for Fox, 22, 5, 4 for Guns, 11, 12 for Hart. +11 TOs.

4/4: Red Lucas, Indy Times: This is the hardest story I’ve ever had to write. As it happened my hotel room here in Kansas City for the Final Four, was on the same floor as that of Coach Joe Indy. At about 2:30 in the morning after the title game, this morning, a commotion out in the hall woke me up. I threw on a shirt and a pair of pants, grabbed my key card, and went out to investigate. I’m a reporter, that’s what I do. Way down at the end of the hall was Coach Indy, in his underwear. There were two very scantily clad women with him. He was shouting, “Hookers and blow! Hookers and blow!”

Other people on the floor were peeking out of their rooms to see what all the noise was about. The two women hustled Coach Indy back into what I suppose was his room as he kept shouting.

Evidently, the team, and the other coaches were on a different floor. I saw no one from the team.

I went back into my room, got more fully dressed, splashed some water on my face, and dragged a chair back into the hall, sat and waited. Sure enough, about twenty minutes later, what could only have been a pair of police detectives made their appearance. One of the detectives told me to get out of the hall. I showed him my reporter’s credentials and he left me alone.

They then went right to the room Coach Indy had been brought into, and knocked on the door. When there was no answer they knocked again. After a short wait one of them took out a key card, and opened the door. There was not a sound from the room. Evidently everyone in there had crashed.

I guess they woke the people up. There were some mumbles, but not much else. I heard one of the detectives call for a stretcher. After a while the stretcher came. When it left the room, Coach Indy was on it, asleep or unconscious. The two “ladies” were handcuffed, but able to walk down to the elevator on their own. Everyone got into the elevator.

I went down to the police station and waited. After a few hours I learned that Coach Indy had been booked for possession of cocaine and marijuana, and for soliciting the services of prostitutes.

Later that day, the story broke, making national and international headlines; it was the lead story on all of the news stations and sports stations. The university announced that Coach Indy was suspended indefinitely, effective immediately.

On a brighter note, here are the awards the Hoosiers received: Loyd Fox is Final Four MOP, and 1st team All American. Ban Hart made the 2nd team. Coach Indy was named National COY. In conference, Ban Hart was POY, Frosh OY, and 1st team, along with Loyd Fox.

April 7: Red Lucas, Indy Times: Another follow up on the Coach Joe Indy story. Word is that Indy will plead guilty to the drug and prostitution charges when the case comes to trial. He has resigned as coach of the Hoosiers, and he forfeited any severance pay and/or benefits that may have been due to him.

October 27: Red Lucas, Indy Times: I was in the courtroom at the trial of Coach Indy yesterday. The judge in the case accepted his guilty plea, and then said, “Mr. Indy, you have committed some very serious crimes, but more importantly, you have violated your responsibilities as a coach, a teacher, and a mentor. The court realizes that drug addiction is a terrible thing, and that an addict is the victim of his own addiction. In many cases the court tends toward lenience in these types of cases, in the belief that if the addict can be treated, all will be well.

“But the court can not find a way to be too lenient in this case. You have sent a message to your team, to your university, and to the whole country. And it was a terrible message. You have violated a great trust.

“The court finds you guilty, and sentences you to ten years at the maximum security prison in Indianapolis. Sentence will be suspended after one year, and you will be required to do 100 hours per year of community service for each of the five following years. In addition, you are never to coach any type of amateur basketball again. Nor will you be allowed to work with the youth of our country in any capacity.”

What a tragic ending to a great career. I’ve spoken to a few NBA General Managers, and they seem to feel that Indy will probably be hired as an assistant coach with a pro team, but none of them said that they would hire him.

He leaves behind a terrible legacy but an incredibly impressive record. In 21 years as a head basketball coach, he won 617 games, lost only 121, for a percentage of .836, the highest in college basketball history. His five national titles put him alone in second place, behind only the legendary John Wooden. He was named National Coach of the Year seven times. What a sad, sad ending to a stellar career.

Coach Indy. Coach Indy. Coach Indy. Ya dumb chump!

You just needed a good lawyer.

Maybe a guy named Cohen who would have taken out a 2nd mortgage on his own home and paid off the hookers with $130,000 and the police with $150,000. Voila! What case?

And if that fake news guy would have tried to make anything of it, just say, "Do I look like a guy who would need to hire prostitutes? What do I know about drugs? I didn't do it. If you don't believe me, just ask my attorney."
