1/1/2036: 13-0, 2-0. Good win on the road vs. #17 MD; Babu had 44.

1/15: 17-0, 6-0, #1, RPI #1. 27.5 for Babu. 11.9 RBs for Brow. +21.9 PPG (#1), +22.6 RBs (#1), +3.1 TOs.

1/29: 21-0, 10-0, #1, RPI #1. 3 game lead in the Big 10. +20.8 PPG, +23.2 RBs, +2.7 TOs. 1st in PPG, RB, Blocks, #5 in assists, #7 in RBs Allowed,
#10 in Steals Allowed, #12 in TOs. Not bad! 27.2 for Babu, 11.9 RBs for Brow.

Ken Babu is #2 on the Norton list. Mike Dele is #6, Cass Brow is #7.

2/5: The win streak ends at 22. We lose by 2 at UConn. 22-1, 11-1.

2/12: 24-1, 13-1, #1, RPI #1. 4 game lead in the Big 10.

Babu is #1 on the Norton list; he also leads the nation in scoring. Cass Brow is #6 on the list and Mike Dele #7.

2/26: 28-1, 17-1, #1, RPI #1. We win the Big 10 by 6 games. +20.6 PPG, +22.5 RBs, +2.8 TOs.

3/5: This is a day I’m dreading. I could lose a LOT of people… Whew! Only 2. We lose Babu and Brow. They’re great players but I though I might lose even more.

Babu remains #1 on the Norton list. Brow is #5, Dele is #7.

3/7: We play #9 seed UConn, 13-15, 9-9, in the 1/4 finals. They’re the only team that beat us all season- by 2, there. We don’t plan on letting it happen again.

3/8: 96-66. 24, 10 for Babu, 20, 10, 4 for Dele, 19, 9 for Brow. 4 starters had 10 or more RBs. As a team we had 61 (+40).

#5 seed Maryland, 19-10, 10-8, in the semis. We won by 8 there, 19 at our place.

3/9: 81-62. 28, 8, 5 for Babu, 18, 12 for Brow, 12, 9 for Star. +13 RBs.

#3 seed Michigan ST, 21-8, 11-7, for the title.

3/10: 96-74. We waltzed through the Big 10 tourney. 20, 9 for Brow, 13, 17 for Star, 10 or more for each of the other starters. +12 RBs, 10 TOs.

31-1, 17-1, #1, RPI #1. We have to be #1 overall.

3/12: #1 overall. It looks like an easy bracket.

We play Princeton, 19-12, first.

Red Lucas, Indy Times: Hey, Indianapolis, I’m back! Yeah, as you probably know I spent the last few years at EPNS, the sports network. The money was good, they treated me right, but I’m a writer, not a talker. It’s nice to be back!

I’m talking with my favorite hoops coach, Joe Indy, of the Indiana Hoosiers.

“Coach, life’s been good to you lately. 2 national titles, and what looks like a third one coming right up.”

“Don’t jinx me, Red.”

“Coach, you’ve got an incredible team. How can you lose?”

“Yes, this is the best team I’ve ever coached; better than either of the teams that won it all. BUT… we can lose.”

“How?”

“A key injury. A night when the shots won’t drop. A night when we’re just flat and can’t get anything going. A red hot three point shooting team that can play some D- lots of ways.”

“Even with all your talent?”

“Yep. If you look at the history of the tournament, the best team doesn’t always win. Matter of fact, they don’t win nearly as often as you’d think. Somewhere along the way, usually in one of the last three games, there’s a challenge to overcome. It might be that off night against a hot team, or it might be a very close game where it comes down to one possession or one rebound. You make the play or you don’t and that decides it.”

“Well, Coach, the whole state of Indiana is solidly in your corner.”

“Thanks, Red.”

3/16: 92-61. A walkover. 28 for Babu, 16 and 21 for Star, 14, 10 for Brow. +22 RBs, 9 TOs.

#8 seed Iowa, 21-10, in Round Two. We won by 12 there. They’re good outside.

3/18: 79-54. Never a game. 31, 6, 4 for Babu. 19 for Dele but a career worst 10 TOs. He couldn’t hang onto the ball. Better tonight than later in the tourney. +22 RBs.

#12 seed Charlotte, 23-11, has been red hot. They’re up in the Sweet Sixteen. They’re very good at SG and SF, and they can hit the three. This kind of team can be worrisome; yes, we’re easily the better team, but if those threes drop all night…

3/23: 91-65. We scored 59 in the 1st half, and never let them get started. 28, 15 for Brow, 28, 6, 4 for Babu, 10, 9, 10 for Dele, just missing a triple double, and only 2 TOs! +28 RBs, and only 4 TOs.

Another red hot underdog in the Elite Eight, #11 seed Purdue, 21-11, beat #2 seed, #6 ranked Syracuse. We won by 17 at our place, but only 3 there, on a night when their threes were falling.

3/25: 87-75. We got 51 in the first half. 28, 7, 4 for Babu, 21, 9, 4, 4 for brow, 13, 4, 10 for Dele, and we’re back in the Final Four.

We play #1 seed, #4 ranked Arizona, 31-2, in the national semifinal. On the other side it’s #9 seed, unranked BC vs. #6 seed, unranked Michigan ST, from our conference. Looks like the winner of our game is a solid bet to win it all- but don’t bet the ranch.

Arizona is yet another perimeter team. We need to stop the three. We think we have a big edge inside, but we will need to execute.

4/1: 77-52. Our D was stifling! 25, 16, 4, 6, 2 for Brow, 22, 8 for Babu, 10 assists for Dele, 11, 7 for 6th man Eric Myra.

It’s an all Big 10 final as we face #6 seed Michigan ST, 26-9. As was every other team we faced in the Big Dance, Mich. ST is a perimeter team. We beat them by 28 at our place, then only 3 there, then 22 in the Big 10 title game. We’re a big favorite, but again, you need to execute.

4/3: 85-67. 50 in the first half. We were incredible in this tournament. Never trailed in the second half, and rarely at all. Title #3!!!34 for Ken Babu, 15, 13 for Brow, 11 assists for Dele, 11, 10 for SF Rudy Snow. +18 RBs.

4/4: Awards: Babu wins the Norton Award, Final Four MOP, 1st team All American. How TF was he NOT national Frosh OY? Makes no sense. Cass Brow also makes 1st team All American. Mike Dele, who will be back, makes 2nd team All American. I get National COY. In Conf., Babu is POY, Frosh OY, and 1st team, along with Brow, Dele, and Jaq Star, who will also be back.

4/23: I ask for $. Got $25,000.

37-1, 17-1, national title. Overall, 510-112, .820.

5/1: #1 recruiting class.

Preseason #1 and no one is transferring out.

6/5: The transfer pool has no one we want.

6/26: 5 scholarships. We’ll go 3-2 either way.

8/7: PG Mike Dele is #2 on the Norton list. PG Don Bran is #30, C Rich Call is #38, and C Eric Myra is #39.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, an SG, an SF, and a C.

9/18: We get 4 gems: An SF, #1, an SG, #2, a C, #5, a PG, #6. We need one more. We’ll take the best player, regardless of position.

NIT vs. Houston.

9/25: We get a C, #10. Unbelievable recruiting class!

10/2: Picked to win the Big 10 again.

11/6: 7 man rotation:

Soph Mike Dele is at PG. Senior Boot Davy starts at SG, subs at PG. Frosh Don Bran gets lots of minutes at SG.

Frosh Jon Cham starts at SF, subs at PF. Frosh Rich Call gets lots of minutes at SF.

Junior Eric Myra starts at PF, subs at C. Senior Jaq Star is at C.

11/13: We start tomorrow at the NIT. We’re the #1 seed. We play #16 Houston.

11/14: 75-56. 19, 11 for C Jaq Star, 19, 6 for SF/PF Jon Cham, 13, 7, 3 for Mike Dele at PG. +16 RBs, +10 TOs.

#9 seed UMass is next.

11/16: 99-60. Never a game. 18, 14 for Star. 6 guys had 13 or more.

#4 seed, #7 ranked Michigan ST in the semis.

11/18: 85-62. 24, 21 for Star, 21, 6 for Cham, 14, 8, 7 for Dele. +18 RBs.

#2 seed, #2 ranked Syracuse, 3-0, for the title. Great early season match up.

11/20: 73-52. 24, 9, 4 for Dele, 12, 10 for PF Eric Myra, 14 each for Cham and SG Boot Davy. Great win!

All 5 recruits sign.

12/11: 10-0, #1, RPI #1. #1 in RBs, #2 in TOs, #1 in Assists Allowed, #2 in Blocks. Dele leads us with 19.6. Star gets 16.0, 14.3.

12/25: 12-0 going to Big 10 play. #1, RPI #1. +19.6 PPG, +15.5 RBs (#1), +7.2 TOs (#1). We’re not the scoring machine we were last year, but our margin is excellent. 18.8 for Dele. 14.0 RBs for Star.

1/1/2037: 14-0, 2-0, #1, RPI #1. Good start to Big 10 play.

1/15: 18-0, 6-0. Still #1. We’re playing consistently well. Our biggest Big 10 challenge, #5 Michigan ST, is here next.

1/16: 87-58 over Mich. ST.

1/22: Iowa beat us by 2 there. The winning streak ends at 37. We didn’t play D in the first half; they got 50, and the hole we dug ourselves was too deep. My guys will learn from this that you need to play D. Trust me, I’ll be teaching it. We’re 1 up on Iowa, 2 or more on the rest.

1/29: 21-1, 9-1, #1, RPI #1. +18.3 PPG, +17.5 RBs, +5.5 TOs. 1 up on Iowa, 2 on Mich. ST, 3 or more on the rest.

PG Mike Dele is #6 on the Norton list. Center Eric Myra is #29.

2/12: Another loss, by 1, at Michigan; The refs were calling everything- on both teams. They made their free throws (81.6%), we didn’t (66.7%). 24-2, 12-2, #1, RPI #1.

1 game up on Iowa and Mich. ST. Mike Dele is #5 on the Norton list.

2/19: Mike Dele had a triple double, 31, 10, 11 in our last game. It’s his 2nd of the season.

2/26: We end the regular season at 28-2, 16-2, #1, RPI #1. +19.1 PPG, +17.0 RBs, +5.9 TOs. We win the Big 10 by 2.

3/5: The dreaded day. We lose 4 guys to the NBA draft, starter Jon Cham, and subs Don Bran, Rudy Snow, and Rich Call. Two guards, 2 bigs. With the guys we have coming in, I’m okay with this, and I’m thrilled that our two best players, Mike Dele and Eric Myra are staying.

Dele is #6 on the Norton list.

3/7: We play #9 seed Maryland, 14-15, 7-11 in the 1/4 finals. We won by 18 there.

3/8: 74-42. 29, 13 for SF Jon Cham, 14, 13 for C Jaq Star, 10, 16 for PF Eric Myra. +25 RBs.

#5 seed Minnesota, 21-10, 11-7, in the semis. Beat them by 17 and 13.

3/9: 83-68. 20, 6, 8 for Dele, 14, 16 for Myra, 16, 12 for Star. 47 RBs, 7 TOs.

#6 seed Ohio ST, 19-11, 10-8, for the title. They beat #2 and #3 seeds. We beat them by 22.

3/10: 63-67. NOT happy. We shot 25.3%, and they out rebounded us. I think we’re the best team in the country but three times so far, we haven’t played that way.

This may cost us the #1 overall seed.

30-3, 16-2.

3/12: #1 overall. We play 16-16 Wofford first.

3/16: 79-55. Never a game. 21, 12 for Star. +20 RBs.

#9 seed Oregon, 21-10, in Round 2. We beat them by 30 in December.

3/18: 75-50. 25 for Cham, 20, 8 for Dele, 15 RBs for Star.

#12 seed Ohio, 23-10, beat both the #5 and #4 seed to get here, so they’re a hot team.

3/23: 88-53. We cooled them off. Team effort. +23 RBs, +9 TOs.

#3 seed, #4 ranked BYU, 31-4, in the Elite Eight.

3/25: 75-57. 23, 8 for Cham, 16, 5, 8 for Dele. +13 RBs.

We play #7 ranked Mississippi ST, 31-3, in the national semifinal.

On the other side it’s #2 Syracuse vs. #22 Memphis.

4/1: 72-55. 44-17 at the half. Another team effort with lots of people contributing. +33 RBs.

We play #2 ranked Syracuse, 34-4, for the title. We beat them by 21 in the preseason NIT, but a lot has happened since then. Their SF is the probable national POY. We expect a real challenge in this one.

4/3: 66-73. We shot 25.6%, and that was the difference. We took 32 more shots and lost. Unbelievable.

4/4: Awards: Mike Dele is a first team All American. I get National COY, but without the title it doesn’t mean much. In Conf., Jaq Star is POY and 1st team, with
Mike Dele and Jon Cham. Eric Myra makes 2nd team.

I’ve gotta say I’m disgusted. If the Pacers offered I just might go to the NBA.

4/9: Too many good players coming in for me to leave.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade. No.

35-4, 16-2, but no title. Overall, 545-116, .825.

5/1: #1 recruiting class in the country. #1 in the preseason polls. But we have only 8 scholarship athletes. 7 are starts or superstars, but we’re thin.

6/5: Nobody in the pool.

6/26: 6 scholarships.

8/7: 5 on the Norton list: PG Mike Dele #1, SF Ben More #2, PG Nick Alls, #3, SG Jody Joss, #11, and C Eric Myra, #21.

8/21: We offer to 3 PGs, an SF, a PF, a C.

9/11: Got a PF, #2, lost a C.

9/18: We get 3, lose a PG. We get an SF, #3, a PG, #4, and a PG, #19.

NIT vs. Auburn.

9/25: Got a PF, #8. Just need a guard now.

10/2: Picked to win the Big 10.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Junior Mike Dele is back at the Point. Frosh Jody Joss starts at SG. Junior Herb Carr subs at both guard spots, and soph Cam Ring subs at SG.

Frosh Ben More starts at SF. Frosh Mel Dami starts at PF, subs at SF. Our only senior, Eric Myra starts at C. Frosh Bob Sorn subs at PF and C.

11/13: We start with Auburn in the NIT. We’re #2, they’re #15. 1/15: 14-3, 2-2. The old problem of not playing well on the road. #17, RPI #23.

11/14: 76-63. 6 players had between 14 and 8. 3 had 10 RBs, 1 had 9. But we shot 30.7%, which accounts for the relatively close score. The outcome was never in doubt though. +13 RBs, +7 TOs.

Next is #7 seed, #19 ranked St. John’s.

11/16: 83-76. We shot better, we led pretty much all the way, but we’re not sharp yet. 17, 5 for C Eric Myra, but he fouled out. 15, 7, 7, for PG Mike Dele. 16, 4 for SG Jody Joss, 11, 8 for sub PF/C Bob Sorn.

#6 seed, #4 ranked Louisville in the semi-finals. They’re solid inside.

11/18: 67-62. They were up 17 early, 11 at the half. I raised the roof at halftime, and my guys came out to play in the 2nd, but we never led until 1:45 left. 31, 5 for Dele, 12 RBs for PF Ben More. Myra was awful; he played only 18 min., due to fouls. Our bench was huge, 23, 11, 5-10, 4, 2.

We’re winning, but we’re not playing championship basketball.

#1 seed Syracuse got knocked out in the 2nd round. We’ll play #9 seed UMass for the title.

11/20: 89-71 and the title. We finally played well!28, 10 for Myra, who got an earful from me yesterday. 16, 13, 8 for Dele, 13, 9 for More. +26 RBs, 11 TOs.

5 recruits sign. 1 doesn’t, but we knew that was a big risk. We’ll bank the scholarship.

11/21: Red Lucas, Indy Times: I went to the Preseason NIT to check out the Indiana Hoosiers and head coach Joe Indy. The Hoosiers won the tourney, but they didn’t look good until the title game, when they looked REALLY good. Coach Indy seemed on edge to me. He can be fiery with his kids, but he has always seemed in control, in the eighteen years I’ve been following him. He didn’t always seem in control of himself at the NIT. Worrisome? Who knows. I just hope he can get it back together; he’s a good guy.

11/27: 6-0, #1, RPI #1. Dele got 38 in our last game.

12/11: 9-1. #1, RPI #1. A loss doesn’t bother me, but we were awful in that loss.

12/25: 11-1 going to conf. play. +8.6 PPG, +13.7 RBs, +2.4 TOs. Mike Dele leads us with 23.3 PPG, 5.8 assists. Eric Myra gets 13.3, 10.8. They’re the only 2 players averaging in double figures.

1/1/2038: 13-1, 2-0 to start conf. play. Mike Dele is our guy. Terrific player, and better every year.

1/15: 17-1, 6-0. #1, RPI #1. 1 game lead in the Big 10. We beat #13 Iowa there, by 23.

1/29: 21-1, 10-0. #1, RPI #1. +14.7 PPG, +13.4 RBs, +4.8 TOs. 1 up on #8 Maryland, 3 or more on the rest.

Mike Dele is #3, Eric Myra #13, Ben More #30 on the Norton list. Dele #3? I’d take him over any player in the country.

2/12: 25-1, 14-0, #1, RPI #1. 2 up on Maryland, 4 or more on the rest.

Mike Dele drops to #4 on the Norton list. Eric Myra is #8. Myra has been on fire.

2/26: 28-2, 17-1, going to the post season. We lost at Ohio ST by 3. #1, RPI #1, +15.0 PPG, +15.1 RBs, +5.0 TOs. 3 up on Iowa and Maryland, 5 or more on the rest.
3/5: Ouch! We lose 4 to the NBA draft, 3 starters and our 6th man. I had hoped Mike Dele would stay for his senior season, but no. Also going are SF Ben More, SG Jody Joss, and PF/C Mel Dami; and Eric Myra graduates. Oh well, we have 5 great looking guys coming in.

Dele stays at #4, Myra at #8 on the Norton list.

3/7: We play #8 seed Wisconsin, 14-15, 8-10, first.

3/8: 72-64. We weren’t sharp on O tonight. 28 for Dele, but he didn’t get much help. Good D, +10 RBs, and only 9 TOs, won it for us.

#4 seed Michigan ST, 19-10, 12-6, in the semis. We won by 18 there, 15 at home.

3/9: 82-73. 21, 12 for Myra, 13, 14 for More, 13, 6, 6 for Dele. +18 RBs.

#3 seed, #8 ranked Maryland. 26-5, 14-4, for the title. We won by 7 there.

3/10: 70-63. 21, 16 for tourney MOP Eric Myra. 12, 12 for More, 16 for Dele. +21 RBs.

31-2, 17-1. #1, RPI #1.

3/12: #1 Overall. We play #16 seed Hartford, 16-15.

3/16: 85-56. 22, 11 for Myra, 18, 7, 5, 3, 2 for Dele, 17, 8 for PF Bob Sorn. +23 RBs, 7 TOs.

#8 seed Arizona, 21-9, in the 2nd round.

3/18: 75-62. 25, 8, 6 for Dele, 16, 10 for Myra. +18 RBs.

#4 seed, #17 ranked Kansas, 21-7, in the Sweet Sixteen. We only won by 2 in the regular season.

3/23: 70-67. 20, 8, 7 for Dele, but a season high 10 TOs. They doubled him all night. Myra was hobbled by foul trouble and had only 6, but 14 RBs. +12 RBs and some key
stops late in the game saved us.

#6 seed, #15 ranked Kent ST, 23-6, in the Elite Eight. Good team, esp. inside.

3/25: 87-77. We were never in danger of losing but it was closer than it should have been. 30, 5, 5 for Dele, 14, 11 for More.

Back to the Final Four. We play #16 Iowa, 27-9. Beat them by 23 there, 17 at our place.

On the other side it’s unranked Penn, 24-12, a #14 seed (!), vs. #3 ranked Memphis, 32-3.

4/1: 82-66. 30, 15 for Myra, 13, 10, 4, 4 for Dele, 17 for More. +9 RBs.

#3 ranked Memphis, 33-3, for the title. They have a terrific PF/C, but I don’t think they can match our outside game.

4/3: 75-58 and title #4 in the last 7 years. They stopped Myra cold, but more had 16, 12, Dele had 14, PF Bob Sorn had 10. Our bench cam up big, 26, 9, 7 to 9, 5, 3. +11 TOs.

Red Lucas, Indy Times: The Hoosiers won title #4 under Joe Indy, and they won it handily. But, as I reported a few months ago, I’m worried about Indy. He seems strung really tightly, and he doesn’t seem to be enjoying his success. When I asked him about it privately he said he’s under a lot of stress. Expectations are sky high. I wish him continued success, but something needs to change. All of this just seems to be taking a big toll.

4/4: Awards: Mike Dele is Final Four MOP, and 1st team All American. Eric Myra made the 2nd team. I am National COY. In the Big 10, Dele and Myra made 1st team. Ben More made the 2nd team.

4/23: I ask for $. No.

37-2, National Champs. Overall, 582-118, .831.
