3/7: We play #9 seed Wisconsin, 17-12, 8-10, in the 1/4 finals.
3/8: 67-66. We expected an easy game. It was anything BUT that. They hung close and took the lead several times, and at the end, they got the ball down one, with
8.9 left, plenty of time to set up a good shot. They set a double screen, got an open look at a 12 footer, and it rolled out as the buzzer went. We were that close to losing. 27, 5, 4 for Mill, but no one else did much of anything except Knox, who had 9 and 16. We couldn’t make baskets (32.4%. +7 RBs, +7 TOs.
#5 seed, #7 ranked Illinois, 23-9, 11-7, in the semis. Their SG has a leg problem, but it’s slight, and he’ll play. They won by 9 there. Their SF leads the nation in scoring. We need to be better than we were last night in order to win this one.
3/9: 89-80. Their SF got 33, but we shut down everyone else, and SG Anto Spen had 39, maybe his best game ever. 16, with 11 assists for Mill. +8 TOs. Our guards won this one; we were -8 on the boards. This team needs to get it together; we really haven’t done that this year. I know, only 5 losses, but still. I just feel like there’s something not working, and it’s a different something every game.
#2 seed, #21 ranked Michigan ST, 23-7, 13-5, for the Big 10 title. We beat them by 16 and 6, but it’s hard to beat a good team 3 times, and they’re good!
3/10: 90-76. We finally put a good game together. 34, 10 for Knox, 18, 10 for Drye, 14, 4, 8 for Mill, 15, 3, 5 for Spen. +8 RBs, +6 TOs.
27-5, #1 ranked, #1 RPI. #1 seed overall?
3/12: #1 overall. We play #16 seed UL Lafayette, 17-16. It’s a good bracket for us.
3/16: 100-69. Mismatch. 21 each for Knox and SF Drew Samm.
#8 seed Louisville, 22-8, in the 2nd round.
3/18: 78-53. 25, 4, 7 for Spen, 24, 5, 7 for Mill. The inside guys rebounded (+10).
#5 seed, #11 ranked Brigham Young, 26-8, in the Sweet Sixteen. On paper it’s a mismatch, but I’m not so sure. We beat them by 16 in the season opener.
3/23: 73-84. Just an awful night. Their starting guards got 48, and we were -6 on the boards. We just didn’t play.
4/3: #3 Kentucky wins the title.
4/4: Awards: Raul Mill, Bill Drye, and Greg Knox, none of whom will be back, make the Big 10 first team. Anto Spen, who WILL be back, makes the 2nd.
4/16: I lose my #2 and #3 assistants.
4/23: We ask for $. No.
29-6, 15-3. Overall, 473-111, .810.
Try again next year. We’re losing some good guys, but we have LOTS of talent coming in.
