A Tar Heel in Dystopia

5/1: #70 recruiting class.

6/5: We see a couple we like.

6/12: Unusual, got both. A C and an SF.

6/26: 4 scholarships. I want 2 and 2.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs, 2 PFs.

9/18: Schedule is a little stronger but not much.

9/25: Lost two. One of them we thought we had a real shot at.

10/2: Lost another recruit.

1st day of practice. We’re picked to finish 2nd in the MEAC.

10/9: We lose another one.

10/16: Finally got one, an SF, #433. Lost a PG.

11/6: 8 man rotation:

Soph Trav Rich is at PG, subs at SG. Frosh Dick Ader is at SG, subs at PG.

Senior Mike Tras and soph Al Laws sub at SG.

Senior Tony Dumc is back at SF. Soph Nel Jeer subs at SF and PF.

Juco junior Don Sart starts at PF, subs at C. Senior Brad Evly is back at C.

People talk about leaving for Canada, or even for Europe. I have never heard of anyone managing to do that. It would seem possible to slip into Canada, so maybe. But Europe or any other place in the old world?” No chance. As far as going South, to Mexico, or through Mexico to somewhere else, I’ve never heard of anyone managing that either. Besides, we know absolutely nothing about conditions anywhere outside of the U. S. We are completely isolated here. No one other than those in power is allowed to leave the country for any reason at all except war, and as I’ve said, those who come back are not telling a thing.

11/20: 2-0. We’re scoring a lot of points.

12/4: 4-2. Can’t win on the road. Evly is leading us with 16.5, 7.7.

12/18: 6-3, RPI #. We’ve lost 3 on the road, 1 in OT, 1 by 2 points, 1 by 5 points.

1/1/2039: 7-4 going to MEAC play. RPI #237, but our schedule was weak. +8.0 PPG, +6.9 RBs, +2.2 TOs. Brad Evly is still our guy, 15.4, 8.0.

I lost a walk on this week. The authorities came and took one of my players right out of practice. Given that his name was Hussein Muhammed, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but despite the name his family identifies as Christian. No doubt he was brought to an IRC (Infidel Re-education Center) if he wasn’t killed outright. I hate all of this so much.

1/15: 11-4, 4-0. Great start to MEAC play. RPI #119. 14.9, 8.0 for Evly, 14.6 for SG Dick Ader, 13.2, 6.8 for SF Tony Dumc, 12.1, 7.3 for PF Don Sart.

1/29: 13-6, 6-2, RPI #127. Tied for 2nd in conf., 1 back of 1st. +5.9 PPG, +7.5 RBs, +1.7 TOs.

2/12: 16-7, 9-3, RPI #85. Alone in 3rd, 1 back of 1st.

2/26: 19-8, 12-4 going to the post season. +4.4 PPG, +7.1 RBs, +1.0 TOs. Evly leads us with 14.2, 8.0. We finish alone in 3rd in the MEAC, 1 back of 1st.

With no explanation as to why, the sides in the war have switched again. We are now united with China against Russia and the League of Arab Nations. No one will admit that this was ever true, but until the war news this morning, we were with Russia against the other two. This happens from time to time. There is never an explanation, and everyone is supposed to pretend that it was always this way.

3/1: We’ll play #11 seed Florida A & M, 11-17, 5-11, in the 1/4 finals. Beat them by only 4 at our place.

3/2: 81-62. We never trailed. Up 18 at the half. 18, 4, 4 for SF Tony Dumc, 16, 7 for SG Dick Ader, 14, 9 for PF Don Sart. +13 RBs.

#2 seed Hampton, 18-10, 13-3, in the semis. Won by 2 at home but lost by 18 there.

78-59. It was close for quite a while, then we broke away in the middle of the 2nd half. 18, 10 for Ader, 16 for C Brad Evly. +9 RBs.

We play #4 seed North Carolina A & T, 20-9, 10-6, for the title. They beat us by 15 there, but we’re the better team. We just need to play that way.

3/3: 78-68 and the title. 19, 6 for Sart. We led most of the way.

We’re going to our first NCAA tournament!

22-8, 12-4. RPI #46.

3/12: #12 East. We play #5 seed, #14 ranked LSU, 24-7. Tough game.

3/16: 71-60. Biggest win of my coaching career! 12, 12 for Sart, 16, 3, 5 for PG Trav Rich, 11, 10 for Evly, 13, 7, 5 for Dumc. +15 RBs.

#4 seed, #13 ranked Oregon. 24-8, in round 2. This shapes up as an even tougher challenge than LSU was.

3/18: 60-77. Tony Dumc had 33, Sart had 10, 10, but we were overmatched.

4/3: #1 Kansas won it all.

4/4: Awards: Senior Brad Evly is MEAC POY and 1st team, along with Tony Dumc. SG Dick Ader is Frosh OY. Soph PG Trav Rich is Def. POY. Don Sart makes the 2nd team. So all 5 starters were honored. Oh, and I won Conf. COY.

4/9: I think I’ve learned all I can at NC Central. Hoping to move on.

No decent offers- well, none from North Carolina. I’m staying.

4/23: We need a budget increase. We get a much needed $7,000.

23-9, 12-4. Overall, 63-30, .677.

And I lost a coach to the authorities. They just came in and grabbed him yesterday. He was my #2 assistant, the scouting coach. This gets more and more outrageous all the time. Rumors are that he was with some sort of underground organization trying to overthrow the dictatorship. If that’s true I had no idea about it.

4/24: I was called in by the authorities and grilled for several hours. They wanted to know what I knew about my coach’s activities. I told them, over and over and over again that I knew nothing about his life away from basketball. We didn’t socialize. We had never discussed religion or politics. They tried to sweat me, but eventually they figured out that I was telling the truth. Not that that will save me if they decide to go after me.

5/1: #78 recruiting class. Can’t afford any reports.

6/5: We lose two guys. They didn’t figure in our plans, but it brings us down to 10 scholarship athletes.

6/12: Got a transfer, an SF. He looks good!

6/26: 4 recruits. We need 3 bigs.

8/21: We offer to a PG, 2 PFs, a C.

9/18: Got a PG, #99. Now we need 3 bigs.

9/25: Got a C, #53. Lost the other two.

10/2: 1st day of practice. We’re picked to win the MEAC, which we should be able to do.

10/9: We lose one.

11/6: 6 man rotation to start:

Junior Trav Rich is at PG. Frosh Feoz Tavc starts at SG, subs at PG.

Soph Dick Ader starts at SF, subs at SG. Soph Ban Faul subs at SF and PF.

Junior Nel Jeer starts at PF, subs at C. Junior Xay Camm, a transfer from ST Louis, is at C.

Another of my walk ons was taken away by the storm troopers. And again, I was grilled for hours. They finally let me go. I have to think that, sooner or later, they won’t release me after one of these interrogations. Not sure whether I feel that I have any reasonable options, but I don’t like feeling like a helpless victim.

11/20: 1-1 week. We split 2 road games; I’ll take it.

12/4: 4-2. SG Feoz Tavc is leading us with 17.8. C Xay Camm gets 16.5, 7.5.

12/25: 9-2 going to conference play. +8.5 PPG, +4.6 RBs, +2.3 TOs. Camm leads us with 17.5, 6.5, Tavc gets 16.8, PF Nej Jeer gets
12.3, 6.0. 11.5 for PG Trav Rich.

We’re off for 2 weeks.

I was approached by an officer of the NC Central Eagles Booster Club. He started talking basketball, and then he shifted to overthrowing the government, and underground movements. I stopped him as soon as I realized where he was going, and threw him out of my office. I know that the only way I MIGHT be safe in this situation is to turn him in, but I can’t bring myself to do that. Probably a huge mistake; he may be a spy for the government who was testing me. Damn!

1/15/2040: 12-3, 3-1. RPI #. 19 (WAY too high).

1/29: 16-3, 7-1, RPI #22. +9.7 PPG, +4.3 RBs, +3.1 TOs. Alone in 2nd place. 17.3, 7.1 for Xay Camm, 16.3 for SG Feoz Tavc.

2/12: 20-3, 11-1. Ranked! 1st time ever! #25. RPI #21. Still alone in 2nd, 1 back of 1st, 2 up on 3rd.

2/26: 24-3, 15-1. We won the regular season title on the last day. #21, RPI #17. +12.0 PPG, +5.4 RBs, +3.0 TOs. Camm leads us with 16.6, 7.4.

Thankfully, things have been quiet here lately. No one snatched away. No interrogations. But life in this society is awful. If I didn’t have this job I don’t know what I’d do. It keeps me busy most of the time, which is great, given that there really are no interesting ways to pass the time.

3/1: We start against #9 seed Delaware ST, 9-19, 6-10. We won by 15 here.

3/2: 84-61. 22, 5, 6 for SG Feoz Tavc. 4 others with 11 or more.

#12 seed Norfolk ST, 12-17, 6-10, got hot in the playoffs. We play them in the semis. We won by only 3 there.

3/3: 77-52. 18, 3, 9 for PG TRav Rich, 14 each for Tavc and Camm. 6th man Dick Ader had 9 and 13. +12 RBs.

In this tournament of upsets it’s #6 seed North Alabama, 16-14, 8-8, for the title. Beat them by 10 at our place, only 1 at theirs.

3/4: No upset, but VERY nearly so. We won 88-87 in OT. We stayed alive with a buzzer beater three by Dick Ader at the end of regulation, and won it on an 8 footer by Xay Camm at the end of OT. Camm had 33, 11. PF Nel Jeer had 15, 7.

Back for our 2nd appearance in the NCAA tourney.

27-3, 15-1, #17, RPI #19. Hoping for a #5 or #6 seed.

3/12: #6 Midwest. We play #11 Arkansas, 18-13. It looks like their inside game vs. our outside game.

3/16: 61-58 in a defensive battle. 22, 9 for Camm. We won it at the line even though we were a pathetic 19-33 there.

#3 seed, #10 ranked Oklahoma, 26-6, in the 2nd round. This won’t be easy!

3/18: 73-81. We played hard, but they were better. 24, 8 for Camm, 16, 11 for Jeer, 15, 6, 6 for Tavc. 23 TOs did us in, but they were forced by great D.

4/3: #4 Louisville is the champ.

4/4: Awards: Xay Camm was MEAC POY. Feoz Tavc was Frosh OY. Trav Rich was Def. POY. All 3 made the 1st team. I was named COY.

4/9: Hoping to move!

I’m going to East Carolina in Greenville. They’re in the AAC, and it will be a challenge to get them competitive, but it really was time to move.

4/23: We need $. No.

28-4, 15-1. Great Season. Overall, 91-34, .728.

Things remain quiet.

(Author’s note: I’ll post this separately, but I’m going to take a little hiatus from DDS:CB. Haven’t taken time away from the game in a very long time, and I feel a little stale. I will continue to check into the Forums every day though.)

Hello PointGuard! It's nice to see UNC being covered on this game, and I can attest to how crazy those right wing crackpots are, being an atheist and a liberal.
