Consolation Game: Portland vs Seattle
Portland piled up early fouls allowing Seattle to take an early 7-2 lead. But the Pilots hit their FG’s and came back to take an 11-10 lead with 13-1/2 minutes left in the half. Before Seattle was called for its first foul with 11-1/2 minutes remaining in the first half, Portland had already been called for 9 fouls, allowing the Redhawks to possess a 17-16 lead. The two teams battled through 15 lead changes and 7 ties with Portland coming out on top at the end of the half, 42-39. Portland was led by four players who each scored 6 points. Seattle’s Orien Goode came off the bench to score 9 points in 4 minutes of play.
The back-and-forth game continued in the 2nd half with numerous lead changes. With 9:32 remaining, the teams were tied 60-60. Portland then scored the next 7 points. The Pilots expanded their lead to 73-62 with 5:14 to go. Portland then stormed to a 93-77 win to finish in 3rd place in the tournament. Portland won by outshooting the Redhawks 56% to 48% and holding an 18-10 turnover advantage even though Seattle out-rebounded the Pilots 29-21 and scored 10 more points at the foul line.
SF Paul Jackson and C David Howell both scored 16 points for Portland with PF D.J. Thompson connecting for 15 points and reserves Langston Hines and Scott Robinson scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Seattle was led by PG C.J. Jones with 13 points, C Darryl Baxter’s 12 points, PF Bryan Richardson with 11 points, and SF Torrey Smith adding 10.
Championship Game: San Diego vs San Francisco
San Francisco scored the first 6 points in the game. San Diego came back to take their first lead at 16-15 with 12-1/2 minutes to go in the half. The Toreros went ahead by 12 with 1-1/2 minutes remaining and finished the half ahead by a score of 40-30 as they hit 65% of their FG attempts. SG Tavoris Augustine scored 11 for San Diego and SG Joe Young popped in 16 for USF.
San Diego took a 19 point lead with 15 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. San Francisco then cut the lead to 10 with 7 minutes to go. The Dons continued to nibble away, but San Diego held on to win 72-64 and take the championship. The Toreros outshot the Dons 61% to 43%.
For San Diego, PG Terrell White scored 23 points and SG Tavoris Augustine finished with 13 points while reserve Matt Wilfork scored 10. SG Joe Young knocked down 27 points for San Francisco and C Clyde Keys scored 10 and had 8 rebounds.
