Restricted Recruiting

Yeah, I thought about that. But thisa team should not have gone out in the Elite Eight. Equally, they should not have faced the #2 team in the nation in the Elite Eight.

11/13: 78-53 over Ball ST. 17, 13 for Mill, 20, 8, 4 for Riva, 15 for Walk, 16 RBs for Hamm. +25 RBs.

#10 seed Michigan in round 2.

11/15: 84-55. 33, 20 for Mill, who was unstoppable. +17 RBs.

#14 seed Fresno ST in the semis. Lots of upsets in this tourney so far.

11/17: 89-47. 17, 19 for Mill, 19, 5, 3 for Baer. +19 RBs. We’re averaging 8.3 TOs.

#4 seed Oklahoma for the title.

11/19: 79-75. Never more than an 8 point spread in this one. We worked for it! 22, 25 for tourney MOP Jess Mill, and he was the difference in this game. Riva had 19, 4, 6. +12
RBs.

11/20: #1. All 3 recruits sign.

12/11: 10-0, #1, RPI #1. Mill has 10 double doubles and gets 24.3, 16.7.

12/25: 12-0, #1, RPI #1, +22.8 PPG, +17.4 RBs, +4.6 TOs. Mill is 12-12 on double doubles and averages 23.6, 17.1 (#1). We’re #1 in Points allowed, RBs.

11/20: 2-0 start. Sanz, Cren and Fleg looked REALLY good!

All 3 recruits sign.

12/8: 5-1. We lost by 4 to #11 Alabama there. Ready for the Sunshine Shootout. We’re the #1 seed and we face #8 Santa Clara.

12/9: 85-51. No contest. 15 and 19 for SF Brad Cren, and everyone played well. +14 RBs, only 6 TOs.

#4 seed San Jose ST, 7-1, in the semis. This should be a walkover.

12/10: 87-67. 22, 15 for C Mike Sanz, 21 for sub forward Chad Over. Again +14 RBs and 6 TOs.

It’s #2 seed George Mason, 6-2, for the title.

12/11: 74-47. 24, 9, 4 for Cren. +7 RBs, +8 TOs. We’re 8-1, #6, RPI #2.

12/25: 11-0, #1. Mill still has double doubles in every game.

1/29: 21-1, 9-1. 3 game lead. We lost at West Virginia on a night when we were just off and just awful. Mill still hasn’t missed.

2/12: 25-1, 13-1, #1, RPI #2. 4 game lead. After 24 straight double doubles Jess Mill missed in each of the last two games, 22, 9, then 9, 16. He’s still #1 on the Norton list.

2/26: We end the regular season at 28-2, 16-2 after a 2 point loss at Kansas ST. We win the Big 12 by 5 games. Still #1, RPI #1. +20.5 PPG, +18.3 RBs, +3.3 TOs. Mill missed a third double double against West Virginia. The game was a blow out, 87-35, so we only played him for 19 minutes. He is still #1 on the Norton list and still leads the nation in RBs (by 2.2 per game) and in double doubles. Sha Riva is #2 in assists.

3/5: I am shocked! Jess Mill is coming back! We are losing two players to the draft, starting SF Milt Walk, who is actually a PG, and back up SF Dan Call. I’ll take it!

3/9: We play #9 seed Baylor, 11-17, 6-12, in the quarters.

3/10: 84-64. It wasn’t that close. 30 for Milt Walk, 14, 5, 15 for Sha Riva, 18, 9, 5 for Mike Baer. Mill had only 12, 9. He turned an ankle and we didn’t want to take a chance of making it worse so he sat through most of the second half. He seemed fine after the game.

#5 seed Iowa ST, 17-13, 8-10, in the semis.

3/11: 93-71. 26, 11 for Mill, 11, 8, 11 for Riva, and all 5 starters had at least 11. +17 RBs, 5 TOs.

#7 seed Oklahoma, 20-13, 8-10, for the title. They played us tough twice, losing by 5 and 7, so we’re taking this seriously.

3/12: 87-71. We never trailed. 29, 22 for Mill, 18, 2, 13 for tourney MOP Sha Riva. 4 Tos.

We should be #1 overall.

#1 Midwest, #2 overall. Okay, Maryland is 29-1, but we’re first in both polls, first in RPI. I don’t get it. Doesn’t matter, we need to win six games to take the title, but still, it’s not right.

We play #16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson, 18-12, in the first round.

3/16: 86-60. 50-20 at the half. 22, 8 for Mill, all 5 starters had at least 12. +17 RBs, 8 TOs.

#9 seed Fresno ST, 21-11, in round 2. We beat them by 42 in the Coaches Classic.

3/18: 79-57. 18, 18 for Mill. +12 RBs, 7 TOs.

#4 seed, #14 ranked Washington, 25-8, in the Sweet Sixteen. They have an outstanding Center. We beat them by 6 in OT in December so we’re working hard.

3/23: 84-50. Mill had 28, 13 and held the other C to 4 and 6. 11, 9, 8 for Baer. +15 RBs.

#2 seed, #7 ranked Florida, 27-8, in the Elite Eight. Their SG and their PF can play. This could be a real challenge.

3/25: 77-60. They were in it for about 18 minutes. Then we went on a 17-2 run. 20, 16 for Mill, 21, 5, 7 for Riva, 11, 13 for Hamm.

In the Final Four vs. 33-1, #2 ranked Maryland, the #1 overall seed in the tournament. On paper it looks like a very close match up. Hopefully we’ll bring our best effort to this one.

4/1: Well, we sure didn’t bring our best game tonight, 72-92. They scored the first 7 points and never trailed. We had some great individual efforts, 26 for Walk, 10, 10, 10 for Riva, 10 and 19 for Mill, 17, 6, 4 for Baer, but we didn’t play D, we were -8 in TOs, and only +4 in RBs, and we were 9-23 from the line.

Very frustrated in that I feel we had the best team in the country both last year and this year, and we didn’t win the title either time.

4/3: Maryland won the title, with a 19 point win over #3 Kentucky.

4/4: Awards: Jess Mill is National POY, and 1st team All American. I get National COY, but it doesn’t mean much, given that we didn’t win the title. In the Big 12, Mill is POY. Milt Walk is Frosh OY and Def. POY. Both make 1st team along with Mike Baer. Sha Riva makes the 2nd team. He should have been 1st team.

4/9: Interestingly enough Maryland called and offered me the head coaching job. It’s almost tempting, but no.

35-3. Overall, 421-78, .844.

5/1: #4 preseason, #2 recruiting class.

6/5: 2 spots for transfers. We offer to a PG and an SF.

6/9: We lost the PG.

6/12: We got the SF.

6/26: 3 scholarships. We need guards.

8/7: C Jess Mill is #4 on the Norton list, C Duke Hamm is #27, PF Al Evan #31, PF El Hues #32.

8/21: We offer to 2 PGs and an SG.

9/18: Got ‘em all. 2 PGs, #5, #17, an SG, #8.

Going to the Sunshine Shootout.

10/2: First day of practice.

11/6: Redshirt soph Jud Lyde is at PG. Soph PF Cris Moel is at SG. Frosh Ted Goby subs at both guard spots.

Redshirt junior Al Evan starts at SF, subs at PF. He shares about equal time with senior Dee Hall.

Junior El Hues starts at PF, subs at C. Junior Jess Mill is at C.

11/13: Ready to start the season. Not sure how good we are. We are very solid up front but the back court is so thin I’m starting a PF at SG.

11/20: 2-0. Two easy wins, by 18 then by 17. With our very big lineup we’re rebounding really well.

All 3 recruits sign.

12/8: 6-0, #8, RPI #8.

Heading for the Sunshine Shootout. We’re the #1 seed. We play #8 McNeese ST.

12/9: 60-49. They slowed it down and we were pretty awful. 7, 13 for Mill got us through. Duke Hamm has earned more and more minutes and may be starting soon.

#5 seed Ball ST, 4-4, in the semis.

12/10: 66-52. 25, 15 for Mill but we’re not clicking on O right now. We’re going to start Hamm for Hues. Hues and Evan will get about equal time.

#25 ranked, #2 seed Arizona, 6-1, in the final. We beat them by only 2 points there, two weeks ago.

12/11: 77-70. 33,18 for tourney MOP Jess Mill. We did not play well in this tournament and without Mill it would have been a different story.

12/25: 11-0, #2, RPI #2. Jess Mill leads us with 24.5, 13.2. +14.6 PPG, +21.8 RBs, +1.9 TOs.

1/1/2033: 13-0, 2-0, #2, RPI #3. Best rebounding team in the country.

1/15: 17-0, 6-0. We beat #8 Texas by only 9 here, but we beat them. #2, RPI #2. +12.8 PPG, +20.7 RBs (still #1), +1.3 TOs but we’re turning it over too often (12.6).

1/29: 21-0, 10-0, #2, RPI #2. +12.9 PPG, +19.8 RBs, +1.8 TOs. Mill is getting 24.2, 13.4, and is #2 on the Norton list. We lead the Big 12 by 4 games.

2/26: 27-2, 16-2, #2, RPI #2. Lousy end to the season losing 2 of our last 4. We win the conf. by 3. +10.5 PPG, +19.4 RBs, +0.6 TOs. Mill gets 24.1, 13.3. Now #1 on the Norton list.

Heading to the post season.

3/5: A frosh guard who doesn’t play goes pro. No one else.

3/9: We play #9 seed Kansas ST, 16-13, 7-11.

3/10: 78-66. 38, 13 for Mill, and it was never close.

#4 seed Oklahoma, 17-11, 10-8, in the semis.

3/11: 82-69. 29, 17 for Mill. +26 RBs. It was a 2 point game at the half. We made some adjustments, they worked, and we won easily.

#3 seed Texas Tech, 19-10, 10-8, for the title. We won by only 3 at our place and then lost by 11 there. Our big guys need to dominate inside.

3/12: 87-76. 37, 18 for tourney MOP Jess Mill, 16, 17 for Duke Hamm. +29 RBs.

#1 Midwest, #2 overall. We play #16 seed Grambling, 19-11.

3/16: 87-69. 34, 16 for Mill, who is playing incredible ball right now.

#9 seed Georgetown, 22-9, in the 2nd round.

3/18: 85-82 in OT. We dodged a bullet when they missed a free throw at the end of regulation. Lucky to still be playing. 34, 8 for Mill, 23 for PG Jed Lyde. We were out rebounded
34-35. That’s very unusual. Hopefully just a bad night.

#13 seed Western Illinois, 24-8 in the Sweet Sixteen. This team beat the #4, then the #5 seed, both easily.

3/23: 66-65. We dodged a bullet again. Their best free throw shooter missed the front of a 1 and 1 with .3 seconds left. Jess Mill got the RB and threw the ball down the court as time expired. He had 23 and 21. We’ve been lucky twice in a row. We need to start playing our game or we’ll go home.

#2 seed, #6 ranked Duke, 29-7, in the Elite Eight. The bookies have us as a 1.5 point favorite. Looks like a close one.

3/25: 66-77. Duke was the better team. 18, 12 for Mill. 15, 13 for Hamm, but 20 TOs.

4/3: UCLA is the national champ.

4/4: Awards: Jess Mill is national POY and 1st team All American. In the Big 12 Mill is POY, Def POY and 1st team. El Hues made the 2nd team and I was Conf. COY.

4/23: I ask for a facilities upgrade. No.

33-3. Overall I’m 454-81, .849.
