Every contract is not able to be extended - contracts for fewer than 3 seasons cannot be extended. Other players may ask for more money than you can offer as an extension because they will be able to get more money by going to free agency. Rookie contracts as well are not up for extension - they have rookie options to be picked up for first round picks which let you keep them for up to four years before you can then choose to make them a restricted free agent.
