Do You Believe in Magic? (The Mouse Version)

Who cares about backstory? You just want to hear how I'm going to bring the Orlando Magic the championship they should've had in the Shaq and Penny days.

I could wait for Mohamed Bamba to develop, gradually building around him and Aaron Gordon, but that's boring, and because the Southeast (and East as a whole) is so awful, it will be hard to truly tank. So let's make things interesting right from the jump (see what I did there?)

Orlando Magic send
Nikola Vucevic
Timofey Mozgov
Jerian Grant

Houston Rockets send
Chris Paul

Magic Take
This is all about the new GM wanting to clear PT for promising rookie Mohamed Bamba and fixing the terrible point guard situation in the Magic Kingdom. He may be 33 and a contract that will see him make over $41 million in his last season, but CP3 is still one of the best point guards in the NBA. Suddenly John Wall has competition for the division's best 1, and the Magic could see themselves now vying for the Southeast crown. Balanced distribution of scoring too, with Paul at PG, Evan Fournier at SF, and Aaron Gordon inside.

Rockets Take
Houston eats an average of $17 million in dead cap money by cutting Mozgov, but Vucevic will give last year's surprise package a true 5, allowing them to push Clint Capela to the 4 and Carmelo Anthony to the 3, giving them a more physical, stronger lineup that can dominate the defensive end of the glass. They also get out from the financial hell of having to pay both CP3 and James Harden, and the Beard now has free reign to take the offense all for his own again. Grant will get a year's audition to see if they want to retain him as a PG of the future. For now, the scary prospect of Eric Gordon at the helm.

Advantage: Draw
This is a really weird trade in all honesty. There's good reasons for each team to have made this trade and reasons why this makes absolutely no sense (does anybody see the Magic as anything more than a one and done, even with this new star power?). This may have been too soon for Houston to bail on last year's Cinderella team, but we'll see how it plays out.

Indeed we will.

The season opens with a near 30 point rout of the Heat, Chris Paul making an instant PotG impact with 22 points, 10 assists, and 4 steals. Aaron Gordon matches the 22, and Mohamed Bamba's NBA debut is good for 18 points, 11 rebounds against veteran Hassan Whiteside. Blew a halftime lead in Brooklyn. That's just embarrassing. Lose to the Cavs by 5 in Cleveland. That's even worse. Our bench is terrible. Maybe we can take our way to a great pick. ....Brooklyn has our number, the Nets beating us in Florida.

Aaron Gordon gets knocked out for a week and a half our next game, so it's no surprise we're 1-6 at the end of October. Only winless Toronto (0-6) and Sacramento (1-6) have been as bad. And the Southeast is indeed awful. At 3-3, Miami and Washington are tied for the division lead after the first slate of games.
