Shuffle Offense

Thank you for all the responses.

In my 2nd season at Holy Cross the team was BAD except for a mighty power forward and a decent center.
I went with the triangle offense and my power forward lit up the Patriot Conference allowing the team to finish 3rd.

The more I play and watch I can definitely notice the affect of your teams skills and sets you choose.

To back up what was said earlier... we were a talented ball handling team because i started essentially 2 point guards so that helped but it running motion can work. My team prestige was about 70 and recruiting was set to normal so I wasnt killing myself with difficulty but... my offense worked very well.

It certainly is possible. I remember some of Evansville's best teams in real life where they ran exclusively motion and did it about as well as any team I've ever seen. Rarely turned the ball over and would eventually find a way to break down even the most tenacious defenses and still somehow managed to usually find a decent shot before the clock expired. They didn't have a tremendous amount of success on the national scene, but those teams definitely impressed me.

The same thing applies to shuffle, but with a slightly different preference in the recruitment preferences. I think those sorts of approaches may take a little longer than others to truly develop your team since you by necessity have to narrow your recruiting options in the first few years, but I can see where it would have a huge payoff in the end if you have patience. I think the same thing applies to teams that buy into one defensive philosophy above others, e.g., Bobby Knight who thought zone was the most offensive 4 letter word in the English language.

It really does require some very specific recruitment preferences i think...your approach was the right one! Plus, i think motion along with perhaps 5 out are man offenses that can be run most successfully against zone defenses if your team is proficient in them, meaning you can spend less time on developing zone offenses.

there are an endless number of ways to approach the game, which is one of it's most beautiful aspects. none of them wrong, you just have to figure out how to make them work.

Hmm. I have never thought about that. Since you do not get to pick the amount of time your team uses a zone offense set, won't you simply be playing a worse skilled offensive set when the AI chooses to have you play it?

How does one know when the AI is choosing to have my team play the zone attack instead of my chosen offense(s)?

over 14 years of playing this game , other than beta testing i have only ever played out each and every game of the season. when playing a game out out in 2d, or.....ugh 3d...you can choose to play a man offense against a zone....have often done it in the past, and quite frankly if i was recruiting to a motion offense program, i'd spend ZER0 time on zone offenses, and would play motion offense 100 % of the time, giving me more practice minutes to allocate to defensive sets.
If you like to sim your games, you are screwed, because yes, in those situations you have no way of refusing to play zone offenses against zone defenses.

In game, when the AI chooses to play a zone defense, your team will play the similar zone offense unless you over-ride it. In game, however, you can choose to play which ever offense you want right from the start.

Good, that is what I planned for. I NEVER play out games, for a long list of reasons. A strong zone offense is a major plus against the AI when simming, I've found. If the AI team is playing zone (and that's not often) I chalk up a win.

Curious...why do you never play out games?

Several reasons. First, I like team building and can't wait to get the new recruits in. So playing out a game simply takes too long. I like to see the answer. Second, playing out games always seems like cheating to me. The ability to do things that the AI is not programmed for is too big an advantage. I simply don't care to watch a blow out game after one unexpectedly develops. All the little in-game cutesies like shouting at the refs or the players -- well I'm too old for that.

you didn't ask this question of me, but i'll answer it anyway , over the last 14 years i have played thousands of games over scores or years, one game at a time, only because it was it was what excited me about the game in the first place. To be in full control of a college basketball team as head coach, not only during recruiting season, and disciplinary actions, but in the day to day progress of the team! For me, if i was ever to start simulating seasons, other than during beta testing, I might as well not play the game at all!

Different strokes for different folks, and so on and so on , and scooby dooby do!

i might take a different approach if i ever got into the pro game...i know in the 20 years i've been playing ootp baseball, i've taken every role imaginable. but in college basketball the only role you have is as a coach...head coach unless you really really want to go through the pain of being an assistant coach....i had my fill of that the first year it came out in beta and never wanted to look back!
