When to study vs when to tutor.

What is the difference and when would you do one over the other? It is hard to see the impact differences.

Tutoring definitely is more effective and quicker to show results than Studying. But Tutoring does limit some basketball development since the guy is working harder on the books so unless a guy really needs to improve to get or stay eligible, I tend to use Study.

If a guy has a GPA below 2.0, I Tutor until he gets above 2.0. If a guy is 2.0 or a little above it, I use Study (except during Sept (prior to beginning of practice) and maybe even Oct (before beginning of season), I may also use Tutoring for those guys also).

I had a player who came in with a 3.1 GPA, went down to a 2.9 to start his Sophomore year, so I had him study harder, went down to a 2.6 in his Junior year, so I had him use a tutor for literally the whole season and he still finished that year at a 2.0, and on April 30 went down to a 1.7 and became ineligible. Gave him a tutor for his Senior season to try and get him eligible for conference play when his academic suspension was up, but when his suspension was over, he went down to a 1.5, career over.

All the other players responded to the studying and tutoring, but this kid, whose work ethic was a low as it could be, simply would not do any school work. I thought about cutting him after his Junior season, but I gave him a chance and he burned me. I liked that this happened though, because some players will not get right no matter how much support they get, and they just blow it.

Excellent point!!!! Yes, sometimes the unexpected happens...well in your case I guess in hindsight it wasn't really unexpected since he had very low work ethic. Or maybe he was hooked on social media, playing computer games or watching porn. Sometimes people just don't perform as well as you'd like (both academically and on the court)....and this occasional variability is a great function within the game making things more realistic.
