When the Board gives you an extension and 'suggests' you extend your assistants, they should also promise (and deliver when that happens) to FUND those extensions.

CB19 is the first version of the franchise to even give you any feedback about extensions and why denials of board requests were declined. It's just starting and no one really knows what it all means yet....pay attention to dynasties, or better yet, start one of your own! Your frustration is similar to those of us that took a low budget school to the sweet 16 and still couldn't get a budget increase the following season. What they SHOULD do and what they actually do, are two different things....get frustrated enough...look for a better job! Some schools just don't even care about winning.

I think the suggestion to extend one's assistants is more of a reminder not to forget to extend them if you are pleased with them rather than the Board wanting the assistants' contracts extended because the Board likes the assistants. As players however we can imagine that it's possible that the Board is impressed with the assistant coaching staff and therefore wants their contracts extended.

If you extend their contracts without giving them a raise, then their extensions are already funded within the constraints of your program's current budget. If you also increase their pay, then your future budget for things outside assistant contracts will be tighter until the Board chooses to approve a budget increase. That provides incentive for you to lobby for a budget increase the next year. Personally, I like the model the way it is; I'm not sure that receiving a budget increase that matches the amount you wish to increase the value of your assistants' contracts at the same time that you receive an extension improves the game or makes the game more realistic. If you want to give your staff a raise, petition the Board for a budget increase, then give your assistants a pay raise once the Board grants your request.

Well-said. Agree completely.

Plus, if you're doing well, your contract will be extended without needing to petition the Board for more time. This can happen in the same season transition period that you petition the Board for a budget increase. If your contract is extended and the Board approves a budget request that you make because you want to extend your assistants and possibly give at least one of them a raise, then the Board will be funding your extension and your staff's contract extensions and raises like you want.

I've never been able to extend a contract without giving a raise. Perhaps I'll try again. My major issue with the financial model here is that the board should tell you how much money you have to spend BEFORE you need to spend it. As I've said before, this is NOT how real institutions budget. Knowing that you can afford (or not) to spend more on coaches is a big deal. The game makes this awkward by forcing you to guess what the board will do. Simply placing the board petition phase before the assistant hiring phase would be a huge improvement for me.

Do you look at the School Info page? This tells you what your total budget is and how much you are currently spending on your assistant coaching staff.

Correct. However this is still prior to the Board increasing your budget, so not useful when you have to make decisions about staff hiring. Am I going to get more money? Who knows. I want to know that BEFORE I have to make hiring decisions.

I can't change the positioning of the order in which things happen - at least not in this version. I think the way things are setup also make it a little bit more interesting. If you know the board gave you more money then its a no brainer to just extend the assistants and give them raises but if its a question as to whether you will get the money or not then you have to make a choice. Are they worth cutting back the recruiting budget to keep them if you have to? I kind of like it better that way.

I also think that if you do up the coaches pay and don't get a budget increase that might make it more likely you spend all of your budget the next season and then the board might see the reason for needing an increase instead of giving you the increase first when they aren't sure you're even going to need more money.

It seems to me that it is MUCH more difficult to hire decent assistants at reasonable salaries in this version of the game. I'm wondering if any else is feeling that way.
