If you play a relegation/promotion format, how is it determined what teams are relegated or promoted? How many get relegated and promoted? Is it based on year-end prestige, or is it based on the team that wins their conference or best season record? Basically, trying to understand the mechanics behind it and if winning anything guarantees a promotion or if a being the worst in the league guarantees a relegation.

Generally speaking the top three teams move up one level, the bottom three move down one level, but the conference tourney can affect that. But, always, 3 up, 3 down.

But the top three based on what....prestige, season record, conference tournament?

Standings in the conference. But like Wayne said, if you don't finish in the top 3 but win the conference tournament, your team will advance along with the 2 best other teams in conference standings.

It's a fun optional way to play the game. Best to begin with a lower ranked team.
