The Phenom

12/27: 70-73 at Pepperdine. Back and forth until late in the 1st. Up 4 at the half. It stayed close all the way and they won it on a late three. This is not a game we should have lost but our guards simply didn't get it done; 13-36 in points by guards. Losing John could really hurt us in OVC play.

20, 9 for Owen, 15, 10 for Brom, 14, 7, 3 for Weat. 20 TO hurt.

We end pre-conf. play at 8-3, NET #45. +9.0 PPG, +8.2 RBs, -1.7 TOs, but 13.7 per is too many. Our 4 top bigs all average 12.1 or more. John was getting 11.8 before he got hurt but we don't have an outside threat without him. Johnny Brom leads in RBs with 10.3.

1/3:86-59 vs. Tenn-Martin here. Back and forth for 12 minutes. Then we took charge. Up 11 at the half. They tried to pack it in to stop our inside game, which is a good strategy against us. Our guards really stepped up, getting 37 points and hitting 8 of 14 threes.

20, 8 for Owen, 18 with 9 assists for Sand, 16, 4, 5 for Howe.

I spent a lot of time post game giving praise to our guards. If we can develop an outside game without John in the lineup we'll be hard to stop. He's not going to be here until the post season so this is vital.

1/6: 79-61 at Tenn State. A close half ended with us up by 6. We quickly took control after the break. Again, the outside game did its job getting 28 points. Too many TOs though; we had 15 with 10 coming from our 3 guards.

16, 2, 8 for Sand, 15, 6 for Owen, 13, 8 for Celk.

Luke John is still in a cast. Our hope that the recovery would be quicker than estimated isn't being fulfilled. He's right on the schedule the docs predicted. Oh well. All part of the game.

1/10: 100-72 vs. Eastern Illinois here; they're supposed to be our chief conference rival. We took an early lead and expanded it. Up 12 at the half.

28, 10 for Weat, who needs to start. 28, 9 for Owen. 15, 4, 5 for Brom. +12 RBs, only 6 TOs. This was a very strong performance.

Excerpts from the Post Game Press Conference:

Q: Coach, your team has really hit its stride.

Coach: We're playing well right now. The fact that we're so strong inside is a huge factor. We usually dominate inside. Few teams in the OVC seem able to match up with us inside.

Q: So how does a team stop your inside game.

Coach: Hey, I'm not about to give the other coaches ideas about that! The thing is, teams that rely on outside shooting run into cold nights now and then. Inside shots usually go in. We can have an off night too, but that's not so related to shooting. It's more about not getting the ball inside, or not getting the ball where you can do something with it. And that's what the other team needs to try to do. Pressuring our guards is probably a good thing to try, too. We can be beat, and I'm sure we will be now and then, but I'm glad I don't have to coach against this team.

1/13: 104-79 at SIU-Edwardsville. Back to back 100 point games. We took an early lead and were up 19 at the half, and just took off from there.

34, 9 for Owen, 16, 7, 3 for Weat, who is now starting in place of Celk; but all 4 bigs get about the same number of minutes. I just want Weat in at the start and at the end, if it's close.. 8, 7, 12 for Sand, and 16, 4, 5 for Howe. +21 RBs, 9 TOs.

1/17: 90-67 with Austin Peay here. They stayed with us all through the 1st half. Down 3 at the break. They really ran at us early in the 2nd and built a 12 point lead. I took a time out and did something I rarely do- I read them the riot act and really kicked some ass. They responded immediately and before long we were firmly in control. After the game I let them know that I saw something I rarely see tonight, complacency. I said I hoped they'd learned a lesson!

26, 11 for Owen. The other starters each had between 10 and 12, Morr had 9 and Celk had 6, 5, and 5.+16 RBs.

13-3, 5-0. One up on 3 teams. Everyone else is already out of it, at least 3 games back.

1/20: 100-79 at Morehead State. They banged three threes early then we took the lead. They hung in but eventually we built a good lead, 15 at the half. We got the lead as high as 24 and kept it at about 20 through the 2nd half.

34, 9 for Owen, 21, 6, 4, 3 steals for Weat, 15, 4, 3 for Brom. +8 RBs, 12 TOs (They had 22).

Our next 2 are at home.

1/24: 80-50 over Belmont here. We got out to a big lead early. Up 23 at the half. Maybe the best defensive performance in my 3 seasons here.

Balanced scoring. 14, 11 for Owen, 17, 3 for Weat, 13, 5, 3 for Sand, 14, 5 for Celk, 8, 4, 4 for Howe. +14 RBs.

1/27: 58-60 vs. Tenn. Tech here. Up 6 at the half. Good D again. The O disappeared in the 2nd half, 23 points. That hasn't happened since the first game of the season. No way we should have lost this game.

31.7% shooting, 3-20 on threes. Sand was 1-10, Brom was 1-6, Howe was 4-17, Owen was 2-6. Terrible! 19 TOs.

Celk and Weat shot well and had 14 each, but they were the only ones. There's work to be done.

Brom hurt his arm. He's day to day but he shouldn't miss any games.

Still one up on three teams. 15-4, 7-1.

1/29: As expected our recruit didn't hit our SAT score. We're offering to another PG.

Gary Owen is #9 on the Norton list.

1/31: 79-64 at Tenn-Martin. We took an early lead. Up 17 at the half. We led all the way.

Big game for Ike Howe, 22 and 5. His most points ever. 10, 12 for Owen, 12, 2, 9 for Sand. +13 RBs, but 21 TOs.

3 teams one game back and we face the team with the best record in the conf., except for ours, away next. Eastern Kentucky, 16-4, 7-2.
