The Phenom

11/28: 75-84 at Boston University. We fell behind early. Down 5 at the half. They led just about all the way. We couldn't catch them.

18, 4, 3 for Stow, 14 for Burr. 4-19 on threes. Our team needs to hit the outside shot. And -13 RBs, our worst of the season.

Big thrill to coach against my alma mater! It would have been bigger if we'd won though.

Mom and dad got to see us lose. Oh well, it's all part of the game.

12/1: 87-55 at Albany. We took an early lead. Up 20 at the half. We took an all but unbelievable 41 threes, and made 21 of them. So almost 3/4 of our points were on threes. They left us open so I told the guys to keep taking them. Weirdly enough they never adjusted their D.

26 for Risi, 17, 3, 6 for Herd, 12, 8 for Stow. +8 RBs.

We're 5-1, NET is #26.

Hobs has won the SG job. He's getting full minutes and Biel will back up only. The same holds for Burr at C. Both Hobs and Burr have earned the minutes they'll be getting.

12/5: 71-53 at NJIT. We took an early lead but they fought back. Up 5 at the half. We ruled in the 2nd half.

16, 5, 4 for Hibs, 12, 16 for Burr, 18, 6 for Risi, 13, 13 for Stow. +10 RBs, 10 TOS. WE were solid both inside and out. They shot 32.1%!

4-1 on the 5 game road trip. Not big time opponents but I'll take it! Now an 8 day break until our next game.

12/13: 86-88 vs. Harvard here. They hit a lot of threes early, but we eventually took the lead. Up only 2at the half. A very frustrating loss. Our D was awful (52.8%) and our outside D was worse (59.1% on threes). We didn't rebound well (+1), we fouled way too much.

22, 4 for Hobs, 17 for Burr.

I HATE losing at home!

12/14: Going over the video and I'm still trying to bite my own forehead over this one. Talk about a bad loss. Didn't sleep last night. Six days to fix the problems before our next game.

12/19: 73-48. vs. Colorado State here. Back and forth. Up 10 at the half. We owned them in the 2nd half.

16, 5 for Hobs who has really played well since I gave him full starter's minutes. 13, 6, 3 for Risi. Good bench play.

+9 RBs and only 8 TOs (We average an outstanding 10.2). We held them to 37% shooting, 2-21 on threes.

Heading for the Hoops Tourney next. We're the #6 seed. We play #3 seed Virginia Tech, 7-1. This figures to be a tough matchup for us.

12/23: 69-79, but it was closer than that; we needed to foul at the end and they made the free throws. A real war in the 1st half. Down 3 at the break. They took a quick 11 point lead at the start of the 2nd half. We got close several times and even tied it twice, but we couldn't quite get over the hump.

21, 6 for Burr, 14, 11 for Stow, 16, 4, 4 for Risi.

3-22 on threes which really hurt. They hit 10 threes.

A real disaster. Starting SG Chris Hobs, who has been playing terrific ball, broke his right wrist. Out until mid-February. Arvid Biel will start, and Risis will back up at SG while Len Barn gets more minutes at SF.

One more pre-conf. game.

12/26: 106-78 at Maine. We took an early lead but they hung in. Up 14 at the half. We just romped in the 2nd half.

We shot an amazing 66.1%, 14-24 on threes. +19 RBs but a season high 18 TOs, which I am NOT happy about. We'll work on that.

29, 9, 4 for Risi, who was especially effective at SG. 18, 10 for Stow, 18, 6, 3 for Burr. We had both the inside and the outside game working.

We end the pre-conf. season at 8-3, NET #104. #11 in RBs, #14 in PPG, #22 NET rating overall. +12.4 PPG, +4.1 RBs, -3.9 TOs.

Lydell Risi leads us in scoring with 18.5. C Chris Burr gets 14.3. PF Nick Stow gets 12.2 and leads us in RBs with 8.4.Hobs was getting 10.6 when the fracture occurred.

Let's see what we can do in the A10. LOTS of teams with good records coming into the conf. season.

1/2: 94-55 vs. Fordham here. Didn't expect a blowout; they were 7-4 coming in. We held a slight lead then stretched it out. Up 25 at the half. 18, 4, 5 for Herd, 17, 2, 6 for Biel, 17, 3, 3 for Risi, 20, 3 for Burr. 9 TOs- they had 23.

This was a very strong A10 debut!

Excerpts from the Post Game Press Conference:

Q: Coach, this was pretty solid start to A10 play. Can we expect this going forward?

Coach: This is a competitive conference and this was a home game. We're going to do our best to play as hard as we can, but there will be challenges ahead.

Q: Talk about Arvid Biel in the two spot.

Coach: We have a lot of confidence in Arvid. 17 points, 2 TOs tonight and he held his man to 2 points. He takes care of the ball and he plays good D. If he can score the way he did tonight we'll be more than happy. It was a tough break losing Chris Hobs, but that's basketball.

1/5: 72-79 at Rhode Island. Close first half. Up 6 at the break. We faded late. -12 RBs was a big factor. And we let them shoot 51.8%.

23, 4, 4 for Risi. No one else did very much.

Winning on the road looks like it's going to be tough but that's not a surprise.
