The Phenom

2/13: 96-75 at George Mason, 12-11, 9-3. We took an early lead but they came back. Then we got hot again. Up 11 at the half. We matched up well with this team and really took over in the 2nd half.

We shot 52.9% and held them to 44.0%. Again tonight we were more aggressive on D, and although it meant they went to the line 37 times (we went 22) it was worth it. An amazing +34 on the boards and that was the key stat.

Chris Burr had a terrific game, 26 and 17. 24, 5, 5 for Risi, 15, 3, 6 for Herd. Great bench play, 21, 19, 5. We were deeper because Hobs was back. He had a pretty poor game, no points, 0-7 shooting. I should have played him in our last game to chip off some of the rust, but hey, we won tonight. Hopefully he'll be himself in our next game.

2-2 vs. The top 4 teams in the A10 and we looked really good in 3 of the 4 games. I'll take it. Tied for 3rd in the A10 but 2 back of 2nd and 3 back of 1st.

2/16: 82-61 vs. 8-16, 4-9 Duquesne here. They were tougher than expected and very determined. Up 10 at the half. We finally put them away in the 2nd but they never quit.

Nick Stow had his best game of the season, 22 and 7. 19, 9 for Burr. Hobs played much better, 7, 6, 6 with 3 steals. He's still not in game shape though. Good bench play again, 18, 14, 3. +13 RBs.

Alone in 3rd, but 4 teams one back and we're 2 back of 2nd with 4 to play, 3 of them away, and the next one a real challenge..

Next up is 4th place ST Bonnie's, 17-8, 9-5, there. They don't have any real standout players on O but a lot of guys contribute and all of their guys play good D. We'll need to play well.

2/20: 83-60. We expected a battle and we got one early. They led for most of the 1st half but we went into the locker room with a 6 point lead. We made a couple of small adjustments, mainly inside, and took firm control in the 2nd half.

+9 RBs. They shot only 40.4%, 2-16 on threes.

21, 4, 3, with 3 steals for Risi, 18, 11 for Stow, who is hot right now. 14, 1, 5 for Herd. Hobs has still not found his offensive game but he played solid D tonight. Another good night for the bench.

Still alone in 3rd with 3 to play. 2 are away but both are against weak teams. I'll be disappointed if we don't win our last three but I'm not taking anything for granted.

2/23: 70-56 at 9-17, 5-10 Davidson. We took a quick lead and got it to 10 in no time. Up 11 at the half. We were never threatened in the 2nd half.

Risi had 18, 4, 3. 17, 4, 4 for Herd, 14, 6 for Burr, 11, 5, 3 for Stow. Not happy with the 19 TOs though.

1 back of 2nd with 2 to play. 2 teams 1 game back of us.

2/27: 87-75 vs. 16-11, 11-5 Richmond here. They hit their first two threes then we took the lead. Up 21 at the half. The game wasn't as close as the final score would indicate. We were in control throughout the 2nd half.

24, 9, 3 with 3 steals for Burr, 16, 4, 8 for Herd, 18, 4 for Risi. Good bench play.

+10 RBs, 11 TOs.

We're in 3rd, one back of 2nd, 2 up on 4th, with 1 to play.

3/2: 66-67 at 7-21, 3-14 LaSalle in the regular season finale. Down 4 at the half after being down by 11. NOT happy with this one. We had no focus, no energy. We stood around on offense and had to take way too many shots when we weren't open. I eventually cleared the bench for awhile but even that didn't work. Then, on the last play of the game, we turned it over with a lazy pass. Awful night.

We shot 35.6%.

Risi worked hard and had 25 and 6. Burr had 12 and 9.

In the locker room after the game I was hot and i told my players that if we played like this in the post season we could expect summer to come early this year.
Then I walked out.

We end the regular season at 21-8, 13-5, NET #30. We're alone in 3rd place in the A10.

#15 in overall NET rating, #15 on O, #55 on D, #10 in PPG, #18 in RBs, #22 in assists. We are a dismal 301st in free throw percentage.

+10.3 PPG, +3.7 RBs, -3.6 TOs, but the TO numbers have been going in the wrong direction lately.

Risi leads us in scoring with 16.9. Burr gets 14.2, and is 2nd in RBs. Herd gets 11.1 and is our assist leader with 6.4. I still want him to shoot more. Stow gets 10.4 and leads us with 8.1 RBs. Hobs simply has not come back to where he was before the injury. I privately told him that I need more from him in the A10 tourney.

Risi leads the A10 in scoring and Burr is #5 but then it's down to #25. Herd leads the conf in assists. Stow is #4 and Burr #7 in RBs. Risi is #3 in Efficiency, Burr #4, Stow #9, Herd #13.

We lost 2 by two points and one by 1 point this year. We didn't win any one possession games. Not a good stat.

I'm hoping we will play at our best in the post season. We'll see.

3/8: We play #6 seed ST Bonnie, 20-10, 11-7, in the quarter finals. We won by 23 there.

Scouting Coach Tyson Weel: This is not an automatic win, despite the easy time we had with them earlier this season. They're tough inside and our big guys will need to step up. We'll also need to hit some threes, but the key will be our inside D and our rebounding. I told Coach Nom we should go with lots of 2-3, as well as the man to man.

3/9: 68-86. They led by 13 at the half. We were flat all night, never played our game.

They shot 54%, hitting both inside and outside shots.

6th man Gary Demo was about the only guy who did much of anything, 17 and 8 with 4 steals. Burr was in foul trouble all night and played 9 minutes. He, Risi, and Stow all wound up with 4 fouls and none of them were effective. The guards were no better.

I think we did enough this year to make the Big Dance but I'll be surprised if we're higher than a #10 or #11 seed.

3/11: As expected Virginia Commonwealth won the A10 tourney.

3/12: #10 South. we play #7 Boise ST, 23-10.

Scout Ty Weel: After looking at a lot of video I think they're a little better inside and we're a little better outside. They try to score both in and out but we'll need to contain their C. They have good scorers at SG and SF. I think we should go more with man to man than any zones.

They play a man and they don't press much so we'll need to do what we haven't done in our last two games- move without the ball.

3/17: 81-70 but it was much closer than that; they had to foul at the end and we made the free throws. Hit some early threes to take a lead but down 2 at the half.

17, 3, 3 for Herd, but he hurt his foot at the end and may not play in our next game. We'll have to wait and see.

15, 5, 3 for Risi, 14, 4, 4 for Hobs, his best game since coming back from the injury. 14, 6 for Burr.

We won it with threes, 16-28 to their 5-17. The 3-2 stopped or at least severely slowed their outside game.

#2 seed, #6 ranked Virginia Commonwealth, 31-3. I am PISSED that we're playing them, especially this early. No way we should be playing a team from our conference.

Scout Weel: They clobbered us last time. They have as good an inside game as we've faced all season, and with Vashon Herd able to see very limited duty we're going to be in trouble with our outside game. This is a mountain, and we're wearing bedroom slippers to climb it.

3/19: 55-90. With Herd only playing limited minutes we never had a chance. We hung in for about 10 minutes and then they took over. Down 18 at the half.

We shot 29%. Stow had 11 and 14, Hobs had 12, 3, 4.

We're losing Nick Stow, which will hurt, but no one else who gets minutes.

3/25: St Joe and VCU are in the Elite Eight.

3/27: Both teams lost in the Elite Eight but my KSU team is in the Final Four!

4/1: KSU lost to #3 ranked Michigan ST by 11.

4/3: #1 seed Indiana is the national champ.

4/4: Awards: SF Lydell Risi and C Chris Burr made the A10 first team. They'll both be back.

4/9: Not looking to go anywhere.

Oklahoma called and the A. D. Tried really hard to make a case. I thought about it for an hour or so but I called back and told him I'm staying here at UMass. There's work to be done here.

4/16: Happy to say that my coaches are all coming back. They all deserve promotions and no doubt I'll lose one or more in time but they're a great crew.

4/23: I remind A. D. Rick Hope of what he said last year about this and I ask him for more recruiting money.

He said no. It wound up in a shouting match. I said some really... strong things about his dropping money on the football team instead of on us when we were the program that was making the money. It went downhill from there and he kicked me out of his office.

22-10, 13-5, 3rd place in the A10. Not bad for my first season here.

Overall, for 4 seasons, I'm 103-29, .780. I'll take that winning pct!
