Baylor Outlasts DePaul in Orlando
The first round of the Advocare Invitational in Orlando, Florida saw great games against some of the best teams in college basketball. Two teams faced off that have endured very different starts to the 2021-22 season. The final score, with Baylor winning 83-79 over DePaul, only highlights the different starts for each program this year.

Baylor, coming off a historically strong year for their program, have struggled out of the gate to a 1-2 start. A close loss to Florida was followed by a 71-59 upset at the hands of Old Dominion.

DePaul, on the other hand, has been hot out of the gate to a 3-0 start. That includes a 20-point win in the season opener against Chicago State. DePaul, who struggled offensively last year, has won each game by 16+ points and scored over 70 points in each game.

The scoring continued, putting up 79 against Baylor. The Bears, having to replace multiple starters from last season, have struggled defensively to start the year.

In the first round of the Advocare Invitational, Baylor was hot in the first half. Scoring 39 points, they took a 7 point lead into halftime. Guard Adam Flagler led the way with 20 points at half, ending with a game-high 33 points.

Baylor was helped by the impressive three point shooting: The Bears shot 12 of 21 from 3, good for a scorching 57% from 3. They also made 15 of their 19 free throws, only scoring the issue DePaul had at the line.

The Demons went 8 of 14 from the charity stripe, part of a night when the shots just wouldn't fall when they needed them. Javon Freeman-Liberty led the team with 23 points and his best shooting effort to date (7/12 from 3pt).

'JFL' was the highlight for the Blue Demons team in Orlando. The rest of the team struggled to score and keep up with Baylor. Head Coach Kenny Payne was still proud of his team's effort but said it should be a wakeup call for DePaul.

"Baylor is a great program. Good team... Coach (Scott) Drew has done a great job. I hope this shows our guys what we need to do. That's a good team and we have to be better if we want to win games like that." said Payne.

DePaul leaves Orlando with a game upcoming against Vanderbilt. The Commodores are off to a 3-0 start and will host DePaul in both teams last game in the month of November.

Game images didn't save for the Vanderbilt game. DePaul lost 94-74, after being down 42-27 at halftime. We never had the lead in the game, only tying them early in the first half. The 'Dores biggest lead was 21, so really they coasted on a 20+ lead for most of the last 5 minutes.

It was another good game for Javon Freeman-Liberty (13 points, 5 assists) and a surprisingly good performance for Tyon Grant-Foster (10 points, 8 rebounds). I've been slow to add him to the starting lineup, but I think it's coming. I've expected more out of Jalen Terry, he's continues to be quiet on offense. That could be because the offense continues to run through JFL.

Vanderbilt was led by Scottie Pippen Jr., who dropped 23 points on 11/13 shooting from the field. Their defense was good, definitely frustrated DePaul (23 fouls leading to 24 free throw attempts for Vanderbilt).

DePaul Wins, But Loses 2 Key Players to Injury
DePaul had been looking forward to their matchup with Missouri State. The Bears come into the season as one of the favorites in the Missouri Valley Conference. Key transfers join a returning roster that was competitive last season and has started this year with a winning record.

Hosting the Bears, DePaul came out and took a six point lead into the locker room at halftime. Javon Freeman-Liberty, who scored 14 points in his 14 first half minutes, had left early for the locker room. Diving for a loose ball, he fell awkwardly onto his elbow. Gripping his arm in pain, he was taken to the locker room and was reported as not returning for the game.

That meant an increase in minutes for young guards Markese Jacobs and Ahamad Bynum. Unfortunately, Bynum's minutes were limited in the second half with back spasms that left him on the bench.

Having to change their rotation for the second half, a back-and-forth game ensued that was likely the most competitive game either team has played this season.

In the end, 14 lead changes, including 8 ties, saw DePaul have an 8 point lead with 4 minutes remaining. Missouri State would chip into that lead, but couldn't top the Demons - losing 70-67 on the road.

After the game, both Freeman-Liberty and Bynum were seen by team doctors. Good news for Bynum, a muscle spasm can be easily treated and he is unlikely to miss any time in the future. The true freshman has earned more minutes as the season has gone on.

Freeman-Liberty, on the other hand, received bad news about his elbow. Diagnosed as a dislocated elbow; it won't require surgery but he is out indefinitely.

The team's Captain and leading scorer, 'JFL' returned to the Blue Demons while others chose to leave. His leadership has been key during the team's transition, but now he will have his arm in a sling for 3-6 weeks before he can even start to rehab the injury.

It's possible that he will be available to return by the end of the season. Since it does not require surgery, there's a 2-3 month timetable that's been discussed by the team.

While the win moved the team's record to 5-2, they lost their best player in the process. Head Coach Kenny Payne said that this type of adversity will offer opportunities for other players to step up.

DePaul Announces Changes at Wintrust, New Student Section
After the team's first conference game, DePaul's Athletic Department came out with a major announcement regarding its home basketball games. Wintrust Arena, the new home to the Blue Demons will see changes that include a new student section.

Following changes to Illinois' indoor dining and entertainment restrictions, DePaul followed suit with announced changes that will go into effect when attendance restrictions are lifted after January 1st.

The changes will be unveiled on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022 when DePaul hosts Creighton. That is also the date that Wintrust arena will return to 100% allowed capacity.

The major change is the location of the student section. Formerly, students took over the lower, second-level concourse and seating behind a basket. Known as the "Demon Deck:" this allowed for some students to congregate in a standing room only section and the University to offer food and special events to lure students to games.

Those sections will remain, but now the student section is moving courtside. Previously, student sat courtside when DePaul played its' home games at Allstate Arena. Now, students will take over the 1,200 seats in Sections 122-124 of Wintrust.

While the 'Demon Deck' remains, it will now be the host location for alumni, season ticket holders, employees and an overflow area for students. Food will be made available in these areas along with special promotions like the return of $2 beer nights.

The new student section has been branded the "Demon Den." This change also comes as the University announced an $11 increase to students tuition that allows students to attend all home athletic events for free.

Free attendance is included for home basketball games, but students must reserve a spot in the Demon Den. Otherwise, students will be given free access to the deck seating. Reserving a season-long spot in the Demon Den does come at a cost to students, but there are additional perks to entice students to return to DePaul home games.

The 'Den' and the 'Deck' also adjusted the spaces for Club and Premium seating options. While the student section is now across from the team and opponent benches; Club and Premium seating takes up the entirety of seats behind the benches.

Sections 106-112 are now reserved for Club seats, select season ticket holders and Premium seating. The University also reserves spots in those sections for player's family and 'guests of the University.'

These changes come at a time when many people are returning to concerts and sporting events for the first time in almost 2 years. Changes to the home arena seating are definitely an attempt to improve attendance and the home atmosphere.

The home game experience and attendance at Wintrust have been issues top of mind for Athletic Director DeWayne Peevy. He is hoping that an improved product on the floor, along with free student tickets and new seating options will bring the energy the Blue Demons have been seeking.
